What other metal bands do you want us to cover?
Fear Factory
Metallica?
Disturbed
Opeth
Black Sabbath and the Anti-War music they put out. Or any bands that helped society. Rage against the Machine and the American Indian Movement, indigenous people are still being poisoned by Uranium mines. Who knows who Leonard Peltier is?
Makes sense. They started with a goal and now that its achieved, I don't see any 'sad truth' associated as the title says. Their songs are timeless and fits every generational events going forward!
At this point, I don’t even want new music from them. That last single wasn’t great, and anything following that near perfect discography will be a disappointment in one way or another. They should just play live.
Yes
Absolutely. Their discography feels complete. I don't see what's sad about it and what benefit another record would really bring. There are bands that make me crave for a new album, SOAD is not one of them.
yeah that title is intentionally provocative.
do you think they can make a world tour once more? they are going to play in a festival aren’t they?
Nothing sad about not making new music, they still chill and play their old stuff occasionally enough. Art doesn’t have to constantly commercially release
I mean making new music is good right
@@assassin8636 Just because it's new doesn't mean it's better
How is this the untold story of if you just pulled the info off their wikipedia page?
Yeah all stuff we knew anyway
We have also already told this story 🤣

The worst part for me is that Serj and Daron were such complimentary voices and had a weird competing harmony that sounded excellent. I absolutely love how Memorize and Hypnotize push their harmony so much. Serj drives that iconic sound, but Daron breaks it up nicely and has a voice that appealed to a lot of Emo and Punk fans that were exploring metal.
Both guys share a lot of fault. Daron never should have tried to upstage Serj by taking on so many lead vocals. The band reminds me so much of Queen at their height. They were better as a group than going their own thing. They all had great ideas, but none were fully realized without the rest of the band to help polish it up. Scars on Broadway doesn't have the same edge as System and Serj's solo music didn't quite hit hard enough for what he was saying.
I think you are wrong about Daron having his turn to be on lead vocals, they were awesome tracks! But both guys should stop putting themselves ahead of the band and accept equal blame. It should be about the music and not ego. This could have been one of the greatest groups which could have had 10+ perfect albums by now.
...such complementary voices...
If I never heard Daron's caterwauling again, it would be too soon. I don't know how anyone can listen to Daron sing and think "yeah, that's it..." In case you can't tell, I can't stand this dude's voice. If by "complimentary" you mean that Daron's nasally sound is time and time again put to shame by the vocal buttery goodness that is Serj? Sure, it's complimentary.
@@jasoncardona7342by complimentary, I think they harmonize and blend very well, but the contrast is still very distinct.
Daron doesn't have the voice I would like to listen to on a lot of metal songs (he's perfect for that mid 2000s emo/screamo style), but it's a nice compliment to Serj who has a perfect voice for metal as well as just having a great overall voice that would be welcome in so many genres.
As I hinted at, I think Daron's voice was perfect for the era as a leading man (Scars on Broadway being a great vehicle for him) because he fits the style fans wanted at that time and was unique enough doing a similar sound. But I listened to a lot more of the lighter side of rock and emo in those days.
@@jasoncardona7342 jesus christ what an awful opinion
System of a Down is one of the biggest succesful project of the last 40 years. But every soad members continued on solo projects and that's awesome. I'm sure everyone still have something to discover on solo records.

They entertain us to educate us. Many "Heavy" bands have guided me in my activism. Like Black Sabbath, Anti-War music.
Now It's so ironic they want war
Trump.clowns
@@ue-kun9553 they want their people protected. That's like saying the Ukrainians "want war" - factually vacant.
Cranberries can count..... then again.... Dylan will ever be the actual activists' activist.
You can tell their bass player is like “man come on guys can’t we all just get along and make a new album “
I honestly think it’s okay for them to be done. Everything they did was incredible and it came at the most perfect time in the cultural zeitgeist that they possibly could. If they did come back in full force I don’t feel any new album would hit that perfect post 9/11 feeling of anger and confusion that their body of work did. I’m just happy that I got to see them in 2012 in Chicago and they KILLED it.
i dont know if youve been following the news lately but theres literally another attempted genocide of Armenians right now as I write this, by Azerbaijan, a Russian client state, who hold common cause with turkey as well. Russia was supposed to "peacekeep" , but we all see how thats worked out.
This is actually a perfect time for them to come out with another album. Check out the 2015 concert in Armenia
@@littlejerryseinfeld4168 The Nagorno-Karabakh situation is horrible and the geopolitical implications of waning Russian influence due to the cost of the war in Ukraine and growing Turkish influence on the region is frightening. Not that Russia did the Armenians any favors, quite the opposite but it was historically better than the Turks.
However, none of that was my point. I don’t entirely disagree with you, if they did come out with new material I would buy it, listen to it, likely love it. What I was saying is that they have a decently sized body of work, all of it exceptional, all of it tapping into a specific time and feeling in the world and especially in America…if it were me, I would look at that and say “that’s enough”
I absolutely LOVED SOAD and they dropped their first album when I was a Sophomore in Highschool.
They absolutely rocked my world! In fact, they were the first band that really got me into Hard Rock!
I was absolutely devastated when they decided to stop making new music! Even today I play their
albums on an almost regular basis. I still will find myself walking around my house and randomlly
singing lyrics to their songs even if it's been months since I've listened to any of their music.
This band could've been bigger than Metallica if only they kept it going. Sadly, we'll never know.
I think they were kind of upset, because so many people have heard their songs and maybe like half of them ever really listened. I hate when someone juat chalks up weird sounding lyrics to nonsense. It's more than that.
@@SacredMilkOG you're more than right!
I like their music, but don't ever listen to a word they say, actually.
And I don't cry, when angels choose to die ....😂
Daron said that the songs on the Scars On Broadway album, The Dictator, were originally written with SOAD in mind.
The 2 albums from SOB are literally the sound of Mesmerize/Hypnotize
Daron wrote most of the lyrics for soad, makes sense.
Unpopular opinion, but I really enjoy SOB.
A band born because of politics will die because of politics.
All it take's is slight disagreement and the band is finished.
I'm 58 and Toxicity is still one of the best Heavy Metal albums I ever heard.
Still sounds as fresh as it ever did today.
Sad end to a great band.
Well said Bro!
Yeah I'm 60
Yeah, Tony said they had to fire Ozzy because he would not sing any praise of God. Tony said "It left the band no choice but to fire him." Im 52 abd im an Ozzy fan, so i can't be objective. Is that the story?
@@rowstone3019 ummm.... NO.
They didnt split up because of politics. In a recent interview John said politics had nothing to do with it. It was creative musical differences
System of a Down contributed to the rock scene in their own unique way. The drums on toxicity are still benchmark to the day.
Yes, that classic crispness is perfect in Toxicity's drums
Yeah, these drums are benchmark if you are deaf.
I don't blame Serj hes the vocalist of his band playing backup vocals to his guitarist.
daron is a genius vocalist and guitarist. serj is a political idealist. SOAD is one of my favorite bands of all time. Toxicity blew my mind and hypnotize/mesmerize got me through the Iraq war. steal this album was just plain fun.
@@gunsup0331honestly serj and daron need eachother. Scars on Broadway is horribly cringey
@@TheSecksiesBand, they both have good "solo" songs, but their harmonies together are unmatched. Also, I've put solo in quotes, cuz if the rumors are true John worked with both of them on their projects.

Daron wrote most of the songs 😂
I was so lucky to have seen SoaD in their post-hiatus reunion tour in 2011. They really sounded amazing, like they just picked where they left off. I was hoping then that it was the start of a new chapter of the band
I’m glad he mentions about 911. I remember this song and the rage, confusion. I remember them purposely not wanting them playing on the radio. We bought the album and blasted everywhere. It resonated the pain we were going through at that time.
The first song that got me to System of a Down was Lonely Day, it played randomly on the rock station NU107 in the Philippines back in 2006. This band became a comfort playlist for me during my college days.
Serj's voice is everything.
Without the metal melodies? Yea I don’t think so.
@@erfansvideos and what is a " metal melodie " exactly ?
@@Ivyctoria all the cool riffs and drums beats that made system album. Serj’s voice without that is nothing but a great singer
@@erfansvideos Many underestimate Daron's backing vocals.
I saw System & Static x open for Slayer at the New Daisy in Memphis became an instant fan of both
Rob from SOULFLY was telling stories about those early days where Static X played to 50 people and then it just took off. I've veen watching Selputura or SoulFly. Rob and his brother look like they are having fun.
Static X is the band that inspired the “your favorite band sucks” T-shirt.
We really need a SOAD band again today. Its so painful they stopped. They are so damn great. I want to so badly see them in concert....
Heartbroken for what could have been.
Seems that way with the best bands with the most potential. But the best of the best, become what could have been before leaving
Don’t be. What we have now is better than them making a bunch of terrible albums.
You forgot to mention their concert in Yerevan, Armenia in 2015
nothing "sad" and theres no "fall" here. their impact through songs and live performances stays . their contribution is huge!
Forreal. The beetles have 6.2 Billion views on their music world wide with numerous albums, SOAD has 5.5 Billion views on just 5. They could've been the biggest band the world has ever seen. There are famous rappers who have been at for over a decade and barely breaks over 1 or 2 billion views. Makes me sad 😢
Right, I feel like there's a reason bands like this rise and fall so quickly. Carrying such a passionately charged message must be incredibly burdensome, to the point that they feel burnt out after a while. I think continuing would just water down their message
I would love another Steal This Album type project. Just to break through the frost.
Daron did ruin the band as far as I'm concerned, and it was obvious with Mesmerize and Hypnotize (and the diminished quality in sound and songwriting) that he was trying to take over. You can see in interviews and other appearances, too, that he has a massively inflated ego. Why he felt he needed to be both lead guitar and lead vocals, I don't know. They were perfect when they each stuck to their respective roles. Serj may as well have not even been on those last two albums, or the two new songs they dropped in 2020 for that matter.
Its not darons FAULT..
🙄
@@dimitrakapa4887 yes it is he wanted full control of the band and the most money. Serj wanted everything split equally.
Very true. Serj voice is one of the main things that set them apart. Daron should have just been happy being backup vocals wtf
Daron has a great voice and his voice fit that era of rock very well. Scars of Broadway is a fantastic vehicle for him to share that. He really fit that emo era and I get that Scars is more metal than contemporary emo bands, his voice definitely bridges the two very well.
I really wish he would have pursued both ventures and not started a power struggle for System. He and Serj really complimented each other well, but Serj had the defining sound. Daron easily could have been part of two successful projects and split time.
Scars is bad music for unintelligent people @@riffbw
I'm happy there all finding success on there own with there own projects. With that being said I wish they could put there difference's aside and do one more album. It's easy to see that they had a connection in music if they could just get along. Sotd was one of my favorite bands during that time. I've been with them since they did B. Y. O. B and spiders and of course Tocsisety.
@Heavi - First off, - Really great production, here; kept me entertained all the way through.
Interesting to find out why they're not playing anymore... I had no idea (and they were one of my favourite bands). I'm actually surprised to hear that Serj wasn't really into those double albums, since they were such a huge success. I'm going to have to go have a listen to them again now after watching this.
Most people never heard of the Genocide until this band started singing about it.
Its an amazing cultural achievement for a metal band.
its fake tho

Wow, didn't knew that! Thanks for the awesome video!
I saw them in 2002 at ozzfest Dallas Texas, they definitely rocked out
Steal This Album is definitely my favorite SOAD album. It's great from the 1st track to the last.. especially the last. The way the last three songs blend into one another is incredible.
did you steal it?
The background music in the 5th minute is 137 by Jay Ray if anyone is interested
It makes sense that a band with almost strictly political songs wouldn’t last long, politics is a topic that a slight diss agreement can ruin friendships if you care that much about it. SOAD was a great band but at this point they need to just officially break up and stop leaving fans on a cliff hanger. If they somehow agree again, the comeback and revival of the band after breakup would be legendary, but just leaving fans dissatisfied and waiting for an album eventually is just sad
They just need to ditch John. There are other good drummers out there that are also Leftist.
John just needs to leave. Period.
I think they should stop writing about political bs and start making songs on other topics
@@YukiiSahashi john is just serj's excuse to stay as a solo artist
John doesn't write their music and has had no issues playing before
@@bllwrwd8142 Well, the Leftists in the band clearly don't get along with the one Trump voter in the band. Hmm...I wonder why...
I feel like we just need to wait for a political climate shift that all four members have a similar opinion on. I feel like that shift is slowly happening. I'm not gonna beg for a new album. I do think it may happen, but not as soon as we anticipate it to.
I was lucky to attend their performance at the european tour few years back, this was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been. I am not a big fan of heavy metal but their songs are such a great fusion of rock and metal and many other things and it’s just so unique and interesting that this “heaviness” of the music is not so much pronounced as with other music bands. It’s sad that they are not getting along , and that their differences are keeping away is as fans from enjoying their music. I could only imagine how many new masterpieces they could have come up with. But being Armenian myself and knowing a bit the temper and principles of our people I would say it’s a common mistake that we make, we could do more if we put our differences away and try to work and hear each other. I hope one day we will all hear something new from them and I really really how it won’t be dedicated to a new disaster that will strike Armenia and Armenian people.
I would be happy to see them in any format, be it live performance or a new album , it’s a shame that they are so much talented and some personal ambitions are becoming an obstacle on the way of incredible music.
I've only ever listened to Toxicity but it's extremely good and songs from it get stuck in my head all the time, most recently "Shimmy". I need to listen to their other albums that you showed here!!
Fuck…..I was starting my sophomore year of high school when toxicity came out and kids went bits for it myself included ivegit a lot of fond memories with this ear guy’s music
Can't have your own opinions about politics anymore 😢
You couldn't go anywhere in 2005-2008 without hearing BYOB, and that's the song that got me interested in SOAD. Mezmerize and Hypnotize are such bangers, the fact that they were both released in the same year is insane!
Reading off the Wikipedia or not you still formatted it into a entertaining and informative video for anyone looking to know more about the band
They played at the Norva in Norfolk, VA between 2008-2010. I don’t remember exactly.
Edit: I just remembered, it wasn’t SoaD. It was Serj and his band.
Go's to show how out there our Australian radio TripleJ is. We get to hear all of it including that deemed to controversial for radio. And we get the unedited version with just a language and content warning. Awesome.
That's crazy. If any of them ever see this, they should look at what they made together, how long it has lasted on its own, without them making more, and maybe put aside their differences to make more. Especially now, when it's so needed
System of a down will only die when we forget them.
One of the goat
I've only ever heard the toxicity album, but I recently checked out their discography after all these years and im finding new System of a Down music in 2024. Mezmerize is my favorite SOAD album.

1st time I saw them was Ozzfest 98. Hated them. But by 2002 they became one of my all-time favs. Steal This Album is definitely my favorite out of all of them. Every song is just so good!
Ego brain 👌
Theres a System and Deftones album in August in Golden Gate Park, SF that I'm hopefully going to. They're still sporadically performing shows but it's so unfortunate that it seems like we'll never get another System album. I like Scars on Broadway's albums, and I liked Serj's "Elect the Dead" (his other solo albums...not so much) but I loved System of a Down. They were and still are one of my all-time favorite bands and I'd like to hear new music from them, but if it's not meant to be, at least all the ones released are classics and bangers relevant to this day and probably will remain as such for a long time to come.
I'm so grateful for the SOAD that we got but selfishly I want to hear more. This band was absolutely inspiring and influential to me during adolescence. Such nostalgia with every song!
They were, and still are a huge part of my life. I am really happy for all of them.

If Daron can put his ego in check then we may see another album.
But Daron is the ego of system
@@backpackerway8533 As I like to say, Hypnotize/Mezmerize were System Of A Daron... Almost all songs written by him alone, which is sad, cause only when I listened to his Scars On Broadway stuff I realized how boring and uninspired he really is as a songwriter. It's always the same structures, zero surprises. He lacks Serj's harmonic ingenuity and John's rhythmic creativity, that made their old albums so great to me. Of course they had some good songs on it too, but they were nowhere close to the diversity of Toxicity, Aerials, Spiders, Peephole, DDevil, A.D.D, Mr. Jack or Streamline.
@@backpackerway8533 The more I dig, the more I feel like Daron did a ton of the songwriting for System and the band cannot replace him without a noticeable drop in quality. I love Serj's solo stuff, but something is lacking. They make me think of Queen vs Freddie solo. Freddie may have been a musical genius and an idea guy, but the band polished it all up to give us the iconic sound. Daron is good enough to go on his own, but he'll never be bigger than System.
It's crazy that a band that good can put out five albums and each one feels better than the previous one and I will say Steal This Album steps up from Toxicity.

As someone in a band, it seems like Daron doesn't understand that he isn't Robert Smith. He isn't the frontman. That's Serj. Some bands can have the lead writer be the lead guy and some bands are best when they play their role and are a collective sum of their parts.
Sneaker Pimps did the same thing when they axed Kelli as the lead singer, then they started sucking as well. Some people have talent but no ear for what makes a good hit sound. 6 Underground ended up being like the theme song for the 90s, listen to the one who wrote the song sing it sometime, it just doesn't have that pop that type of song needs.
Nice job with video

Great and very informative video! Just one little piece of constructive criticism, at some points you don't really sound confident in what you're saying, like a middle schooler giving a presentation. But other than that please keep up the great work!
Hye Enk was NOT their first EP. It was a compilation album that they were featured on, with their second demo version of "P.L.U.C.K."
Their first EP was simply titled System of a Down, was released on cassette only in 1995. Contained demo versions of the songs "Sugar", "Suitepee", "Dam", and "PLUCK"... later a second EP was released with songs "Honey", "Temper", and "Soil"... then a third EP with "Know", "War?", and "Peephole"... they then recorded a full demo album, not releasing it, but it leaked, shortly before they entered the studio to record their Self Titled album.
This video now gives me a full explanation why the band hasn't made a new album after all this time... it's really unfortunate that certain band members couldn't have certain agreements & had differences in opinion... at least I can give up hope now in waiting 2 listen 2 a new album... 😐😑😒

the moduses they sing in are ancient and very Mesopotamian; u can hear prayers similar to Serj's style of singing in different Aramaic influenced languages and just places in that area(Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, Persian and i believe all the way to parts of India).
