Best decision I made was building my motor like I took my time checking all brand new parts and rechecking like u said u have to be confident in yourself and it will go problem free I’m shooting for 450-500whp
Hey man, I am in need of some EJ insight. I’m at a dead end in forums and your the only person I can think of that is knowledgeable enough to know. If you could help it would be much appreciated. Great video, bro! Ppl will know how valuable those tiny measuring tools are the very FIRST time they use them. Dude, Last night at 10:15pm, i started my car after FINALLY finishing the timing belt/waterpump replacement.. I was soooooo scared.. Definitely the biggest job ive done on my own, so far. It sounded great! So much better than before... I did also have a bad ac idler pulley that i replaced, so maybe that was making noise, but dude, it felt so good to hear her rumble...
For extra understanding and support I recommend a course like practical engine building form High Performance Academy. Can't wait to see this on the dyno!

I have a 2007 wrx and an ej20 you told me the 2019 type ra short block was pretty good for longevity. All I wanted to ask was if All I needed was the ej20 head and throw it right on the built block
The EJ20 head will work but keep in mind it will change your compression a little. Also double check the piston to valve clearance. I'd suggest using B25 heads or W25 heads (depending on what your shooting for). And appreciate rhe support my dude. I try to help where I can 🙏
I had to use a rod bolt stretch gauge rebuilding naval diesels. Waaaaaay bigger than that one lol but it’s nice to know my diesel experience transfers over quite a bit.
The big thing with building is who you take the block to to be machined. Whenever splitting the case on a EJ/FA the crank bearing and rod bearing clearances basically go out the window and should be re machined. It’s very specific and is something everyone should be aware of prior to building an EJ/FA
Not entirely true, you can get clearances back in check with using the proper sized bearings. Just have to mix and match sometimes to get then where they need to be
@@Smeedia This is true! You can use bearing to get back within spec/tolerance. IV just seen a lot of people blow up their EJ, split the case and they don’t check the clearances and just throw new oem bearings in and they wonder why they have to rebuild it again at xx,000 of miles I also watch people blow up and engine and send metal through the whole block yet they don’t want to pay for a new pump, cooler, oil lines, and banjo bolt filters 🥶
just as i was about to ask why don’t you just have bader tune your car i see your IG story and see that already happened! good stuff as always my man. favorite creator by far rn keep it up

@@Smeedia Lol, yeah she hurts my eyes, but saying that it’s made me look for an EVO5 in Dandelion Yellow which imo looks sick on that version EVO esp with the rallies graphic, rare only ever seen one here. And that’s from a die hard Subi guy. 🤘
Also head gaskets. The rcm folded stopper layer, that should be the only head gasket that ever touches a Subaru. I went rcm and have never had a failure. 26psi all the time and no pushing coolant ever. Spend the money at flat irons on the rcm gaskets it’s a 2 and done deal since we have 2 head gaskets
I had a new motor shred itself a couple months back. We didn't touch the internals or the timing either, a shop did that. Turned out a lot of the head work he did was out of spec. Denied any accountability so I'm just stuck eating a 15k loss and having to get another motor 😅.
Is a pre built short block all you need engine wise to make high hp? Or do you need to build the heads too or is stock heads with built short block enough?
After working on my WRX I decided that if I was to upgrade it I would buy a built motor. I didn’t enjoy working on it like I did my other cars. At this point I went and got my first 2jz car and put the subie up for sale.
@@Smeedia It’s a GE vvti. They didn’t make them GTE for this car in the states but they did in Japan. I’ll eventually get a ecu and a GTE head so I can put some real power to it. That’s if I ever stop working almost every day

Can’t wait to see the fake taxi turned up, i was wondering how much did you pay outfront when they did the close decking and assembled the ej short block ?
Was about $2000 or so for outfront to close deck, up drill the case halves, re hone and bore, that also included the pistons 🙏 I bought everything else seperate
Where did you do the majority of your research to build the motor? Was there a book? Video? UA-cam? I wanna learn! I know the basics but the Intricate stuff having never done it is what I need to know!
Hey! You mentioned you worked in aerospace? I know you live in Washington, did you work for Heroux Devtek by chance? I'm former aero myself and worked at their Cleveland shop.
@@Smeedia haha well, whichever washington based aerospace company you worked for... be glad you got out! I was an aero bush and hone, assembler, and machinist for 5 years. Covid came around and they laid off a looottttt of people here in the US but kept their canadian shops full. Left to do repair instead of production and that company is also going under now with the lack of air travel and airlines retiring planes instead of repairing. I've always thought about getting my own hone tools to hone blocks for some of the local guys, especially since some of the german stuff we worked on was 0.0007+/- but it seems like most hand hone tools get a serious upcharge. Almost cheaper to just buy an old sunnen machine! Love your builds and content man!
@@Smeedia Oh yeah, I mean HDI dropped from 7-8 full gear sets a month to like.. 1 or 2 when Boeing started to roll back on the 777/777x lines. It's been a tough year for a lot of people in aviation. But hey, thanks for talking man! Like I said, love your content and I'm super excited to see how both your project cars turn out! Especially the 6 cylinder sti, that think is going to break a LOT of hearts haha
If you have never built a motor just buy a built one, your Subaru experience will be a heart brake if you don’t have the right tools. A micrometer inside bore gauge, a standard micrometer, and a damn accurate torque wrench, and a machinist that knows what they are doing. I don’t want to detour anyone, but subarus are different than anything IV built, research and research. And do not skimp on, head studs, forged pistons, forged rods. Arp rod bolts. So if this is your first I recommend buying a block that’s appropriate for your power needs. Haha needs not goals lol, then after you get the first built block. Then go buy your own parts, build your own motor then swap it in, and have a known good spare motor in your shop ready to go. I’m a machinist so i built my first motor to 400 hp worth. After it was running good, I got the good stuff and built a built motor. Swapped it in, and now have a good spare motor as back up. And after years of blowing built motors that first motor is still my back up. I run my low boost maps on the back up motor, then after my built motor is in, I turn the boost up and hit the track. I get 50-75k on a built motor. Which is good at 400 wheel torque. Usually it’s a minor catastrophe now. Usually seized wrist pins now. Haven’t had rod bearing failure in years or head gaskets.
Hey bro how are you and I need to asked you something and I am so sorry for bugging you after I got my pro tune then I got my new head unit in my 2017 subaru wrx sti premium because it didn't have android auto or Apple CarPlay and the head unit I got put in was a kenwood dmx9720xds and my car battery is only a 450 cca and my car has been playing up do you think it could be my car battery because it's a bit small do you think that's why I'm having troubles keep up the good work I'm enjoying all your videos your number one fan in Australia Jason

@@Smeedia I bet! I jumped in head first when I did my fuel system, turbo, tgv deletes, etc. I got it done and I was stoked. Still running strong with no problems. This video made me reconsider building an engine. I think I'll give it a try? I just need to learn how to do the measurements and such. Thanks for another inspirational video! Mad respect!
Love the content man keep it up! Also, just a couple days ago I noticed a loud clunky noise on decel in my 2015 wrx I’m not noticing anything mechanical wrong and I’m thinking it might be a loose or broken motor mount. Do you have any other ideas for what might be happening?
Tanner, dude, your stuff had me thinking I could do my own. Weekend list was a number of parts, but barely got egr delete done with many ouch and headaches. Fasteners are always much harder that everyone makes them look, and areas way tighter to get at. Knowing what to do and being able to seem miles apart. Car guy side says do it yourself while body and time constraints scream pay somebody else.lol Anybody know where the extra bolts went, or why I’m short 1 clip?🤔
Not gonna lie even after doing aircraft work for several years I'd still be terrified to build an engine (granted I really miss working on planes while I was active duty) that scares the hell out of me
I love the color of that sweater, I might have to make the move to official fanboy and order one :) After buying a built short block (FA20) what would I save by installing it myself vs having it professionally installed?
@@Smeedia I would try and do everything I could up until pulling the engine if having it installed for me. I'm curious if buying the tools needed for pulling the engine and doing it all myself is worth it over paying for it to be done.

Best decision I made was building my motor like I took my time checking all brand new parts and rechecking like u said u have to be confident in yourself and it will go problem free I’m shooting for 450-500whp
Definitely build a lot of confidence too when assembling the block, stressful st times but worth it 😁😁😁
Hey man, I am in need of some EJ insight. I’m at a dead end in forums and your the only person I can think of that is knowledgeable enough to know. If you could help it would be much appreciated. Ill give you a breakdown when/if you reply. Thanks anyways regardless. Love your channel keep making awesome vids man!
Whatcha got 🙏
@@Smeedia have an 06 STI.
-Acessport with OTS Stage 1 tune
Cobb intake and turbo inlet
Invidia N1 catback
When the car is up to temperature as always of course. When I do a pull, starting in any gear. Anything over 5k I get feedback knock of -2.00 and fine knock learn of -1.40. My DAM stays at 1.000 but I’m just at a loss of why I getting those readings. Mind you I commented to you in a previous vid asking about your turbo kit and told you about my deployment. I’m not super worried about it, it’s just a piece of mind thing at this point
I wouldent stress it, those are all normal values for knock and FBK, especially for an OTS Tune. You'll see up to -4.20 for knock which is considered normal
@@SmeediaWish I didn’t live out on the East Coast you’d be an awesome friend to have because I have no one within a 3 hour radius who knows anything about ej’s. Thanks for being my encyclopedia homie 👏🏼👌
Eyyyy glad to hear you got her going!!!! 🔥🙌
@@Smeedia yep. And i got my karma shirt shipping confirmation! Thanks braj!
DUDE! HECK YES! Love this!

For extra understanding and support I recommend a course like practical engine building form High Performance Academy. Can't wait to see this on the dyno!
Been taking their courses all night 🙌
You sir just gained a subscriber u are really detailed in your videos
Eyyyy appreciate the support 🥳😁
I feel so bad, I subbed at 12k and my baby was born and I’ve missed the better part of Tanner’s growth for three months. I’m back though fr this time bro 😢😂

You guys, he did the thing!!!
We did the thing!!!!
Just got knock on my 12 wrx hatch hit about 100k miles pass week been taking the bus because I can’t tell my insurance I feel like they would total it. I have a life changing interview coming up October so if I can last until then I will be ok. But if I don’t idk what I’m gonna do. I love this car it’s been my dream car since I was a kid. I’m scared guys love you smeedia fam (:
Wishing you thr best of luck on the interview, your gonna crush it 🙌🔥
You gotta drive a ej207 one day, driving a jdm sti was wildly different.

I do always hit the like botton at the beginning of the your videos because I'm sure that I will like it in any case !!!!!!
❤❤❤
I know this isn’t your recent video but I wanted to tell you you’re doing great my good dude. I’ve been watching you for a while but I always come to you for questions because you’re the man.
For thr most part building should be fairly similar, like you said though. Definitely a difference in tool size 😅
super informative - thanks for this video. definitely gave me more confidence to build my ej within the next upcoming months
You can do it 🥳🔥
The big thing with building is who you take the block to to be machined.
Just have to mix and match sometimes to get then where they need to be
@@Smeedia
This is true! You can use bearing to get back within spec/tolerance. IV just seen a lot of people blow up their EJ, split the case and they don’t check the clearances and just throw new oem bearings in and they wonder why they have to rebuild it again at xx,000 of miles
I also watch people blow up and engine and send metal through the whole block yet they don’t want to pay for a new pump, cooler, oil lines, and banjo bolt filters 🥶
Sheeeeesh 😳 gotta make sure those tolerances are spot on
just as i was about to ask why don’t you just have bader tune your car i see your IG story and see that already happened! good stuff as always my man. favorite creator by far rn keep it up
Gotta get this car on the road, Josh came in CLUTCH 🔥🤌
Hold up. Wait a minute. I thought the skateboarding bomb is a big one. You just casually glanced over working in AEROSPACE MY GUY. This guy is just casually dropping landmines on us like we won't have questions....
😅😅😅😅 jack of many trades lol
Thanks, Smeedia. Good info, however I prefer to buy it pre-build it.
Nothing wrong with that 🔥🥳
You inspire me!. Thanks so much.
Glad that I can share ❤❤❤
We did bolt stretch on naval diesels. Same type gauge just way bigger lol
You forgot the most important rule regarding all those tools except for the little grinder... DO NOT DROP THOSE TOOLS!.
OUT F@#$ING STANDING! Congrats, you are building my next engine!🤣🤤😍😎👽😉
Yes do not drop the tools! Lol 😅🔥
Bought two built never had any issues with either. Just always check your oil, and makes sure it's full.
🙌🙌🙌
Yeah, im going tobe taking my ej22 out and rebuilding it. Im getting all my parts and tools before i touch my ej22.
Another super informative vid! Spreading the knowledge and sharing your experiences helps us all out a ton. Makes for good Karma 😉

Can’t wait to see your face enjoying it on the road…
I want to hear that turbo spoooooool!
Jealous, I wish I could that. 😫 I know nothing about auto mechanics, or being mechanically inclined whatsoever. But I enjoy watching your videos, and hopes that I can learn something. I do have a question: Where are the best sites for pre-builds?
Again love you're videos, keep em coming, I'll be watching for em. 👊😎
10/10 would suggest outfront for any prebuilds your looking for 😁 and with yhr will to continue to learn more, you'll get to the point where your building your own blocks too 🔥
Amazing work my dude! To know you have done this and documented every step, its a memory that will last you forever!
Definitely a big milestone and very happy with the outcome 🙏🙌
Mate that first start up was on of the smoothest and tightest Subi (but any car brand model). have heard, ya did good, mate and honestly it sounds like a engine should done right, so hopefully here on in she will treat ya right she’s all new so no bad Karma ya won’t be able to blame the previous Karma it will be the work an not he tools, but I have confidence in ya bro, ya done good, just get a sick wrap on her and get rid of that taxi stuff and she will be built my man, built for the street, I hope you will eventually get shop even if small, I see good things in the future, ps, I hope yup keep both the Blob and then EG33 VA chassis STIs, I know ya want a Nissan or Mazda next but please please don’t sell either to fund that, too ,much effort and also these cars are special, the amount of cars I regret selling still kills me to this day. anyways a usual bro awesome content. stay the course, awesome vid.btw 30years for the EJ, lol, semantics but had to say it for us down-under we had the Legacy gens and the WRX since 89/92 peace out..btw I still prefer the EJ 20 over the EJ25, lucky I have and have had and we got both.🤙
She better treat us right from now on 🔥 she's getting re wrapped here soon so the graphics and the yellow will be swapped out 😉
@@Smeedia Lol, yeah she hurts my eyes, but saying that it’s made me look for an EVO5 in Dandelion Yellow which imo looks sick on that version EVO esp with the rallies graphic, rare only ever seen one here. And that’s from a die hard Subi guy. 🤘
You should get a base Impreza hood instead of the block off for the scoop
I've debated it, however the vent also allows for heat to escape
You did the thing ❤❤
Thanks for the information
Anytime my friend 🙌
Thanks bro!
Looking to build an engine similar to this could you make a video or link up a part list of all the components you used
Coming soon 🔥😁
Weldone man👏👏👏Now dyno😈👍
DYNO 😈
Whoop whoop another awesome video

WHAT A GREAT VIDEO. MOTOR SOUNDS SO GOOD. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT BRAND PISTONS YOU WENT WITH AND YOUR P/W CLEARENACE
JE pistons, I have my machine shop set P/W clearance when they bore and Hine the block. Pistons are stepped to 99.75 over the 99.50
Is a pre built short block all you need engine wise to make high hp? Or do you need to build the heads too or is stock heads with built short block enough?
Need an engine mount too
After working on my WRX I decided that if I was to upgrade it I would buy a built motor. I didn’t enjoy working on it like I did my other cars. At this point I went and got my first 2jz car and put the subie up for sale.
CHASER?!
@@Smeedia I got a gs300. She’s definitely heavier then my subie and doesn’t sound as cool atm.
GTE or just GE?
@@Smeedia It’s a GE vvti. They didn’t make them GTE for this car in the states but they did in Japan. I’ll eventually get a ecu and a GTE head so I can put some real power to it. That’s if I ever stop working almost every day
Nice video!!!
Thank you 🔥😁
😭😭😭 I got my Bugeye RS crashed yesterday 😭😭😭 thank God my engine and trany are safe and I found a WRX shell clean so hopefully I can buy it and start my swap so I can have my Bugeye runing again
Noooo 😭😭😭😭 save the bug!!!!
@@Smeedia i got good news My engine is RS but found a hole new WRB colored WRX Bugeye shell so engine remove from the old and passed to the new
Still gotta move everything cause its completely stripped out but I have everything plus I already had some donor who gave me full WRX rear and front seats
Your knowledge is inspiring! Where are you based? I’m sure it’s not Dallas but that would be awesome. I’m trying to buy a 20/21 sti soon and need to find an expert like yourself since I have zero tuning experience

funny, I have that same exact chair/creeper
That creeper has broken on us so many times. Do you have the issue where the wheels fall off?!

I tried lock tight on ours and still had no luck 🤣

Can’t wait to see the fake taxi turned up, i was wondering how much did you pay outfront when they did the close decking and assembled the ej short block ?
Was about $2000 or so for outfront to close deck, up drill the case halves, re hone and bore, that also included the pistons 🙏 I bought everything else seperate
Pudin are you already out of the Seafoam hoodies? how about the pink I didn't see them are they gone?
They're gone for now 😭 going to do a 48 hour order of them in a couple weeks 😣
Thought you were going to say the micrometer was the most important tool. 😁
Man I can’t imagine the amount of fulfillment I would have doing this
Definitely rewarding 🔥🙌
Where did you do the majority of your research to build the motor? Was there a book? Video? UA-cam? I wanna learn! I know the basics but the Intricate stuff having never done it is what I need to know!
Just research through old forms, videos. Anything I could find online. 😅 you can download the FSM from subsru and that should help as well 🙌
@@Smeedia cool! thanks wasn’t sure if there was 1 specific place!
Hey! You mentioned you worked in aerospace? I know you live in Washington, did you work for Heroux Devtek by chance? I'm former aero myself and worked at their Cleveland shop.
Can't say I've worked with them before 😖
@@Smeedia haha well, whichever washington based aerospace company you worked for... be glad you got out!
Had a ton of buddies get laid off from Boeing as well, helllllla people getting dropped 😖😖😖
If they give you instructions on how to build it then everyone should be able to feel comfortable doing so. All you have to do is follow them right
100% 🔥 follow the FSM and you can do it

Firsties, been looking for a video like this.
And I'm now wishing a got a mint hoody. Looks dope when worn.
There will be a second drop coming in a couple weeks for past merch like the camp hoodies, mint ones etc. 🔥🙏
@@Smeedia ooooo. Camo. If you decide to do a camo with your new logo I'll be all over it 😉
Done 🔥

Very nerve rocking, exoaeicallt for the first one. But so happy that I did it 🙌

Who? Hell nah
Love the content man keep it up! Also, just a couple days ago I noticed a loud clunky noise on decel in my 2015 wrx I’m not noticing anything mechanical wrong and I’m thinking it might be a loose or broken motor mount. Do you have any other ideas for what might be happening?
TOB is the first thing that comes to mind, or loose trans mount
Tanner, dude, your stuff had me thinking I could do my own. Weekend list was a number of parts, but barely got egr delete done with many ouch and headaches. Fasteners are always much harder that everyone makes them look, and areas way tighter to get at. Knowing what to do and being able to seem miles apart. Car guy side says do it yourself while body and time constraints scream pay somebody else.lol Anybody know where the extra bolts went, or why I’m short 1 clip?🤔
Lol ohhhhh trust me I have been to that point many times 😅😅😅
Also don’t forget the dummy punching bag to take that stress out on
Just the price of the dial bore gauge alone is about $300-$400

For assembling the short block or installing it? 🙏
@@Smeedia I would try and do everything I could up until pulling the engine if having it installed for me. I'm curious if buying the tools needed for pulling the engine and doing it all myself is worth it over paying for it to be done.
