I went to Catalina Island with my late brother in the early 2000's. He died in 2022. The Catalina Island trip was one of the happiest times of his life.
I would have had a blast if not for the kids. When we go there we found out that due to changing weather conditions, everything we booked in advance was cancelled. Huge headache to this day trying to get the money back as the local event cliches and the online platform through which we booked everything kept passing each other back and forth, putting the responsibility on the other side. Also, due to a cruise ship at anchor in the bay whose guests had booked all the travel carts, jeeps, excursions, we had no way of getting around to do anything. We walked for a bit, visited some shops, went back to the beach where after 2 hours, the kids got extremely bored. We were stuck there for the entire day as there is no way of leaving prior to the scheduled boat times (morning and evening). A nice place; perhaps more adventurous for folks with no kids; but overall, a very disappointing experience. Just be aware, that no matter how long prior you plan things out, these plans might not work in your favour once you find yourself on the island.

According to marinas.com, depths inside the Avalon Bay are in the 18-foot range.
Usharbors.com says that the small bay has depths of 2-13 fathoms though (1 fathom equals 6ft)
