My late friend lived in the same building as Nina.He worked in entertainment and did her some kind of business favor. She called him and invited him to her apartment where she played a short private concert for him as thanks. He told me of sitting on her couch, seeing the NYC skyline and hearing her play for him as so magical.
I disagree. She was very successful and sold millions of records. But She got deeply into militant black nationalism and openly advocated violence against whites and that combined with her mental illness is what ended her career.
It's so heartbreaking to know that this incredibly talented lady was supposed to be a concert pianist but they never let her because of the color of her skin. What a shameful world we live in. Incredible that she took that and said you know what, I am going to make it anyway and did her own thing and we are blessed with her recordings. I would however have loved to see and listen to her tackle concertos!
That's disgusting, I'mhappy she became famous anyway but how many talents that never got the chance became of racism there must be. I always enjoy her piano playing so much, the emotion she shows with the piano.
What's most heart breaking is a certain well known master con artist (if not yet recognized by his power mad followers which comprise a third of my compatriots) was able to unleash the worst in the country, something that I thought was buried forever when Barak Obama was not only elected but re-elected. Trump showed how far we have to go to achieve an open and free society, and with freedom comes responsibility and and hopefully an awareness that, as our Native Cousins counciled us, to be mindful of your actions today and how they will affect our offspring seven...or even seven thousand...generations hence (I'm thinking planet climate, plastic pollution, insecticides and herbicides, and even nuclear war?) So lucky that Nina Simone endured and thrived to bless us with her awesome talent. Yayyee!
That’s the standard story about her audition at Curtis Institute but it’s unlikely that it really went down that way. There were already black students that had been accepted at Curtis well before the time of her audition. Curtis is free, so the competition is fierce. Apparently approximately 70 people auditioned that year and only a few were accepted. A couple of Philly based journalists researched this Simone story and they talked to a Curtis piano teacher that worked with Simone after the failed audition. He and his wife had taught there for decades and he didn’t believe it was racially motivated. Most of the other Curtis staff that were involved in the audition and school administration had passed on when they did the research for the story. It’s not impossible that it was racially motivated but it’s not a slam dunk either and the research doesn’t support the story.
If this moving performance doesn't cause intense emotion to flow from your psyche, then something is missing within you. She was the real deal... a musical maestro.
Warning: Long. I absolutely love this song. The Play “Porgy and Bess “was par none. George and Ira Gershwin was simply the greatest musical writers and lyricist- genius’s of their time. Nina Simone’s is unmatched and my favorite rendition. She put her entire head body and both feet into this song. I use to scream this at lung top. I was only a little girl at that time. But that love resonated throughout my entire being. To think one could love another so intensely, that it’s loss pulls at the Chordae Tendonae of your heart. I Understood that love then and still do now. I played for keeps. It tickled my parents to watch me sit on the floor looking at the big wooden box with the turntable and speakers inside the screen. I would press my forehead to the speaker screen cover and strain my eyes peering inside with all my might. I’d ask my mother, when is the di get going to come out of this box. And, I just can’t see her on the stage but I know she is in there. My mother 😳😮 thinking omg we are going to be driven to the brink of madness. And that I did. Album After album would vanish. I thought the singers were little people inside that stereo. Even though I clearly seen the album placed on the turntable and the music start up. To me, that was the orchestra. Crazy right. What does it have to do with the artist on this page. I can’t deal with any of that still. So I digressed RIP to all the greats. 🙏🏽❤️
of the thousands of folks who've covered this Nina's is my favor rendition ever! SO MOVING AND HER PIANO PLAYING!! WHAT A GENUIS!!!! BEAUTIFUL JUST BEAUTIFUL!
Most TV gigs back then meant little more than showing up and mouthing the words to a prerecorded track. But this Nina performance was both live singing and live piano playing at the same time. Just awesome.
I have several of her albums. I remember my father listening to her when I was very young in the early 60s. She attended Juliard. Her life story is aspirational. Thank you for all the music Nina.
😢 this is heartbreaking moment, just remebering my fav singer Xtina tributing on 2008 at the Grammy's nominations, that was flawless with a jazz band behind. ❤
This clip used to be on UA-cam as possibly one of my favorite performances by any artist ever… and then it disappeared and I felt like I lost a family member. Thank you for uploading it again! I missed this particular performance of Nina Simone’s
Monday morning . It's raining out. Drinking coffee. Stumbled on this via an NPR story on Gershwin. I'm alone and tearing up watching this. So beautiful.
I have been listening to her for a longtime before youtube came along, but now I' m glad that thanks to the Internet I am able to discover so much more, it's another dimension. How fantastic to see her hands on the piano keys, see her dance, see how she interacts with the public, how she uses silence to "put them under her spell.".. Thank you ! And I am aware that thanks to people sharing her videos in youtube they "keep her alive" . Her exceptional Art is being discovered anew by the young generation. That's very precious. Thanks again
im mesmerized by how the instant after she thanks sullivan, she appears enraptured as if thrown into a trance it seems like she is in such an intense interface with the music and story; it's just indescribable to watch
Dear Ed Sullivan, always a "Big Shew". He and his staff had a genius for introducing the world's greatest talent to the world, and we are the beneficiaries of that. Not only Nina, but the Beatles, if you were around in '64...or grew up in those circa generations. Bless UA-cam!
I just became acquianted with her in 2007. This thanks to the voice of my generation Miss Christina Aguilera for whom the great, late Miss Simone was an enormous source of inspiration. Loved her and been playing her music on a regular basis since then. My favorite ones so far? Of course this melancholic I loves you Porgy, Don't let me be misunderstood and I put a spell on you. Rest in peace Miss Simone. Thank you for accompanying me with your music and velvety voice through some of darkest moments in my recent life.
The first time I heard this, many years ago it has stuck with me ,and inspired me, Nina like Billie Holiday makes me really feel like they personally have experienced the moment...
Lyrics I love you, Porgy Don't let him take me Don't let him handle me and drive me mad If you can keep me, I wanna stay here With you forever and I'll be glad Yes, I love you, Porgy Don't let him take me Don't let him handle me with his hot hands If you can keep me, I want to stay here With you forever, I've got my man I love you, Porgy Don't let him take me Don't let him handle me and drive me mad If you can keep me, I wanna stay here With you forever, I've got my man Someday I know he's coming to call me He's going to handle me and hold me So, it's going to be like dying, Porgy When he calls me But when he comes I know, I'll have to go I love you, Porgy Don't let him take me Honey, don't let him handle me and drive me mad If you can keep me, I wanna stay here With you forever, I've got my man

Wow!!! What an amazing experience!
Omg...... I'm soooo jealous.
This makes me a little emotional! What an incredible experience
Nina was SPECIAL . There will NEVER be another like her.
Then they all lived happily ever after right 🙄
So grateful that Ed Sullivan made sure artists like her got massive exposure.
This is first time I've teared up listening to a song.
She never received the recognition and acclaim she deserved. Kudos to Ed Sullivan. Powerful performance.
Ed Sullivan used his power to help African American artists. He appreciated talent.
I disagree. She was very successful and sold millions of records. But She got deeply into militant black nationalism and openly advocated violence against whites and that combined with her mental illness is what ended her career.
@@m.r.2183not entirely untrue✌️
She gives me the goosebumps. She was magical.

She developed a lane for herself to travel in and flourished. She did not give up bcs she believed in herself.

You know George is smiling down on this rendition. I think it's the way he wanted it to be sung.
On top of having a mesmerizing voice she was also a fantastic pianist. Truly an original talent.

What an incredible performance! I didn't know she was a pianist. Wow. And she's a perfect alto. A great song, too. I saw it in the 60s.

Lyrics
I love you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me and drive me mad
If you can keep me, I wanna stay here
With you forever and I'll be glad
Yes, I love you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me with his hot hands
If you can keep me, I want to stay here
With you forever, I've got my man
I love you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me and drive me mad
If you can keep me, I wanna stay here
With you forever, I've got my man
Someday I know he's coming to call me
He's going to handle me and hold me
So, it's going to be like dying, Porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes I know, I'll have to go
I love you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Honey, don't let him handle me and drive me mad
If you can keep me, I wanna stay here
With you forever, I've got my man
Nina prefered to say " love" in correct English, she hated it that the lyrics by Ira Gerswin supposed that a black woman would not speak good English
Wow! takes me back to 1959!
Wow this was just good !
i love you
Uau 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Amazing song. I love the rendition of Christina Aguilera too❤️
Michaela Coel could play this woman in a biopic.
❤💙🖤
eu te amo, amo-te nina, eu…damn
