      If long distance accuracy is your only measure of having fun in a Nerf game, then yes, by all means spend lots of money on making an "accurate" blaster. However there are other metrics by which fun is measured. In the real world, most people don't use sniper rifles on a shooting range and most soldiers don't carry them either. Nerf has it's blaster counterparts to pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, light and heavy machine guns because not everyone wants to sniper from afar.

    It actually increased accuracy but it took range down with it a bit. I think that when the dart transitions from the smooth part of the barrel to the rifling section there's a little bit of friction on the dart so maybe smoothen out that transition a bit and you've got yourself a masterpiece. I would make the entire barrel have rifling! Start out with less and progressively have mite aggressive towards the muzzle. Like a real gun.

      Not to mention the scope and the ability of the shooter. By their very nature, Nerf darts of any description aren't ideal for long range accuracy. 100 feet isn't really very far, and a reasonably proficient archer or slingshot user would have no problem reaching that target with relatively low end equipment, as opposed to the relatively expensive, high end blaster Bradley was using.

      Spherical projectiles doesn't need to rifle when being shot out of a barrel, in the event that it does, the trajectory of the projectile depends on how it was rifled. It means that if a rival round was rifled clockwise, it may turn to the right (from the shooter's perspective) and to the left when rifled in a counter-clockwise manner. Rifling is only useful in cylindrical projectiles like a dart or a bullet. A hop up mechanism, however is used by sphere projectiles to increase range as in airsoft, rival rounds etc...

    If it's strictly the rifling that's improving the accuracy, then shouldn't the same principle be applicable with flywheelers? I think there might be more at work here than just the rifling. Many people talk about the effect that porting has on accuracy. It seems like the Blastertech barrel had more significant porting than the Acuratio. If that's the case then perhaps we're seeing the effects of both factors in the results, with the Blastertech outperforming the Acuratio.

    • @BradleyPhillipsYT

      The problem with tight rifling in a flywheel setup is the drag it would add, considering the dart has no air pushing behind it like on a sealed breech system, the dart may not even leave the scar fired from a flywheeler.

On my Caliburn (K26, 18 inch barrel w/ sealed pusher) at the moment I've settled on 1/4 twist (or slightly more sometimes) but it just feels like a lot. • @donutcat0
      @donutcat0 5 років тому +1

      Twist is for adjusting the tension of the strings on the darts. Optimal twist should be what drops your velocities the least but not having any slop or excess looseness when just dropping a dart through it.

    • @donutcat0
      @donutcat0 5 років тому +1

      @@Stryker5260 It does impart some spin on the dart, but spin on darts has negligible effect on their accuracy because of the flight characteristics of front-weighted drag-stabilized projectiles. Some basic testing by CaptainSlug can be found at nerfhaven.com/forums/topic/28050-on-the-topic-of-scar-barrels/ with a more comprehensive overview at www.reddit.com/r/Nerf/comments/7d19wt/please_tell_me_everything_you_know_about_scar/dpvkttg/ which basically collects most information about the physics of Scar barrels into one post to deliver an encompassing conclusion to the debate at the time, which was: If you can properly tension a straight-strung Scar to your darts it will give the same gains as one with twist, that the dissipation of muzzle blast is what's giving you an increase in accuracy.
      I will note that too much spin will destabilize them, as noted in the reddit post, but chances are that you'll see too snug of a fit on the darts causing issues before you see issues from too much twist.

    • @BradleyPhillipsYT

      @@another3997 I think in succession the gradual rotation fly wheels would add in theory two points of anti friction. Forwards and clockwise. I would like to also add in the barrel component would more than like shred the dart after enough forces are applied to it.
      Maybe start the experiment with gradual rotation bearings that way we can tell if it’s even possible to spin a dart and what benefits it could present. Then move on the powered bearings/flywheel. The design could be very similar in function and concept as a rail-coil gun

    I'm going to be slightly picky: I think it's not entirely "correct" to call this "Does *rifling* work" when we know that dissipating muzzle blast is the significant factor affecting accuracy from Scar-type attachments. It could be said that the rifling is what does the dissipation, but even just a ported barrel without any imparted spin is providing the same benefits to accuracy.

    • @theLegoDEI
      @theLegoDEI 5 років тому +8

      This is not true. Using two 3d printed attachments that are the same in every which way with the only variability being straight grooves or sprialed grooves (rifling), we see a massive accuracy improvement. Data collected over 50 shots each. Both have muzzle brakes (ported). www.reddit.com/r/Nerf/comments/aojy7d/rifling_works_and_worker_darts/

    • @donutcat0
      @donutcat0 5 років тому +1

      @@theLegoDEI Prefacing this by noting that I'm not trying to sound aggressive here, but tone isn't conveyed well in text:
      In your testing you say that a printed straight flute attachment performs on part with a twisted strung Scar and a printed twisted flute attachment will outperform those. In this video though it seems that the sample of darts(an admittedly small number) performed seemingly more consistently through the strung Scar than the Accuratio. Any thoughts on this specifically?
      Something else I'd like to bring up is the possibility that the nature of FDM printing is skewing your results. Is there a chance you think that inconsistencies in printing could be impacting the performance of the straight flute design while more even distribution within the spiral fluted design would lower the impact they would have? This is of course of questionable practical importance because we'll obviously just use what gives the best results regardless of whether the idea is completely correct or not, but I bring it up as a point in the science of the matter.
      In a spiral design the flutes will be longer than a straight flute design. Do you think this is at all relevant to the results, ie is the (marginal) extra flute length letting enough air through them as to even further lower the effect of muzzle blast? Probably not, but it's something that popped in my head that I wasn't sure enough about to immediately dismiss.

    • @pyschohippymofo
      @pyschohippymofo 5 років тому +4

      Nope. It's easy to test the BT scar with and without twist, the difference is clear. Unless you want to claim that the twist somehow reduces muzzle blast even more. The rifling is doing more than the reduction in muzzle blast, especially with inconsistent darts like the ACC3s.

    • @donutcat0
      @donutcat0 5 років тому +1

      @@pyschohippymofo Changing twist changes tension on the darts, something LegoDei points out in his research. Go with no twist and you're also losing the centering effect which affects accuracy. He also points out that his printed straight flute and ported design can match benefits of twisted strung designs. Spectre's work with a full port barrel is also looking into porting as more important than spinning. CaptainSlug's testing in the links above also agreed with porting in a straight flute design being able to perform similar to spiral strung designs.

    • @BradleyPhillipsYT

      Longer barrel is relevant to the size of your blaster's plunger air volume and weight of the spring. Some blasters would get worse if you added a really long barrel so it would definitely be a difficult topic to tackle.

    • @justanotherad
      @justanotherad 5 років тому

      @@BradleyPhillipsYT Yet you did this with comparing different darts/different make barrels...
      @plus 200 fps it's no longer a simple toy. And it's apparent that you are only doing this with likes of longshot plungers (which btw is too much). Half of that tube can launch the short dart to that distance. It would be simply nice to see a comparison video between: Barrel material like brass vs Alum, two types of lengths (your choosing), waxed (cleaned) vs dusty (whored). There are blasters that are coming out like DZP with interesting internals, springs, and plungers.
      You are showing groupings hitting at aprox 2 ft width per 100 meters.

    • @theLegoDEI
      @theLegoDEI 5 років тому +3

      SCAR's only slow down the dart by ~10fps at most. A simple velocity difference between 240 vs 250 fps won't make the difference that you see.

    • @albey1816
      @albey1816 5 років тому

      Yes at that speed - 250fps you need to stabilize the dart. I have fired Worker Gen3 darts at 90fps in a 16mm barrel (13mm internal) and they fire fairly straight without a scar.
      So it depends on how fast you want to push them.
