The irony is the gun isn't much used by police because of it's monstrous recoil. Milius stated he picked the .44 Magnum because it was a hunting round and he wanted to show Harry was a hunter.

The Great Legend Elmer Keith will always be remembered as long as guns chambered in .357 and .44 Magnums existed and are being used.

Bullshit. Clint never shot a real M29 in these movies. He shot blank replicas. Look at the recoils in those movies. No idiot would give a real gun to an actor because no one wishes any accidents. That's why no recoils in movies.

I have had a few 29 Smiths all very good guns accuracy always very acceptable, my last one was a beautiful 8 3/8" and I have had three 6" and one 4" in the end the 6" was my favorite because I carried in a hip holster a lot. Great guns and one of the best medium calibers out there!

Nickel plated 29-2 6 1/2" bought in 1975, blued 4" and 6 1/2" 29-2 purchased in 1976 still have them, my favorite carry is the 4" since then the other two have been safely resting in the safe ready for duty...

In 1974 I picked up a blued 6 1/2 inch S&W model 29 and in 1979 I picked up a model 629 with a 6 inch barrel. Both are great shooters. I reload and used to cast bullets for them. The preferred cast bullet is Lymans # 429421 cast bullet out of hard lead. The powder has been either Alliant 2400 or Unique. H110 is another powder. All loads give significant recoil

If he didn't totally waste the strength of one finger by trying to hold onto the trigger guard, a round one at that, and use all his fingers on the actual handle he might control the recoil better.

I owned two Smith & Wesson Model 29's in my life, a 6 inch barrel and a 4-inch barreled Model 29-2. What I learned was that over time they will shoot themselves loose, which is why the Model 29-3 had what's known as the "endurance package) added to it in the 1980's. I got far more use and what was a better shooting gun what my Smith & Wesson Model 57 in .41 Magnum, which looks identical to the Model 29. Mine was a 4 inch barrel and it had belonged to a Vermont constable who used it his entire career until he retired. It was a better shooting and more comfortable gun with less recoil but in .41 still packed enough of a punch. My favorite .44 Magnum was a Ruger Blackhawk flat top 50th anniversary gun. It shot better and held up a lot better than either of the two Smith & Wesson revolvers I had.

I have a 4" 29-2 that is in pristine condition. The trigger is ridiculously smooth and stages perfectly. I wished I could handle that recoil anymore but I’m reduced to pretty much only shooting 44 special in it. It’s my safe Queen for sure.

Larry Kelly of Mag-Na-Port fame and origin used the Super Blackhawk in a five inch barrel, and ported of course, to drop an elephant. He used a KTW tungsten core bullet to brain the beast as he reached out with his trunk to grab him.

The 44 magnum is fun to shoot once but overall exhausting to shoot long term. If you want something powerful but easier, I'd recommend the 45 ACP desert eagle. Strange how much of a difference such a small change in size makes. Obviously a 9mm is king for accuracy and speed but the desert eagle is a great balance between the fun of shooting a gun with a lot of kick and still being accurate and repeatable.

      .45 ACP Desert Eagle?
Perhaps you are referring to the MRI *Baby* Eagle in .45, as the *Desert* Eagle was never chambered in that cartridge.

I bought one in Germany.in 1973...I saw Dirty Harry at the post theater at Grafenwohr in July of 1972...but none were available and none were expected to become available for the foreseeable future...I forgot about it until December of '73cwhen I got a call from the manager of the Illesheim Rod and Gun club telling me that one was available from the S&W bonded warehouse in Ulm which was being closed..my price was $205.50!!!! I could believe my luck, but didn't have the cash available at the time...rules were that you had to pick up the handgun and bring it to the company arms room the day it arrived...the R&G club had no safe or security to hold firearms...I called my dad in New Jersey and asked him for a loan...I'd already spent as much on a plane ticket home for Christmas of that year...in mid January of 74 I got another call to pick up the gun...I think I ran the half mile to the R&G club in about 10 seconds!!! Unfortunately it was stolen in Feb of '82...I have both the receipt and Post MP registration card....
