Great video. I have recently started reloading and have added 44 and 45 colt to my list. Love them. I don’t load them hot so I can enjoy them. Great job on the caliber videos, very interesting knowing the history. Thanks

I also stumbled upon this channel. I to "roll my own". This is the only way I can afford to shoot the 45 colt and 44 mag. Lotta info out there.

I do love my 357 revolvers, and I love my 44 mag that I don't always shoot. It is an extremely fun gun to shoot

I keep a 44 mag close at all times when I'm home... Just incase a Bad Guy is hiding behind the Refrigerator, over at the Neighbor's House!... I heard that somewhere, quite a while ago.... I laughed like Hell!.... Haha!

Love your videos, I have a few 44 magnums, my dad used to tell me how power the 44 magnum was when I was a kid and then when I was about 9 years old I watched my dad shoot a super blackhawk and every time he shot it I could feel the concussion "thud" threw my body and I new from that point on I was gonna have me a 44 magnum one day....well here I am.

I am quite a 44 advocate. I bought my first in 1985 and have owned most all the standard models and barrel lengths S&W has produced.
I have owned a Ruger Super Redhawk and Super Blackhawk. A few 44 rifles in the mix and we have had great success whitetail hunting for 3 decades. Good vid. Look forward to more on 44. Thank you.

Mr. Keith was quite a character, and sure did alot for shooting in general.

I used to think the .44 mag was complete overkill for personal protection. But since seeing a few videos showing overpentration isn't an issue with a handgun using the right hollow point ammo I changed my mind. But I'm not going to trade in one of my .357 mags anytime soon 😊.
Edit: I was around during the Dirty Harry .44 mag craze. Also the 12 gauge 3" magnum craze.

I would tend to agree with you about ammo selection. Earlier on the channel we shot a 9mm through a 2x4 on the spine or long end. 9mm has the same ability to overpenetrate as anything else. Thanks for viewing!

The 180gr JHP loadings are great for varmints of both the 4 legged and 2 legged variety.
PMC Bronze loads an awesome affordable 180gr JHP. It expands quickly and causes massive tissue destruction but does not overpenetrate.

The .44 American had a step base bullet with a diameter of .44". S&W sold some to the Russian government. They wanted an inside lubricated bullet. Rather than redesign and build a bigger gun, they shrunk the bullet to .429" and shrunk the bore diameter and the factory had minimal changes in tooling. New chambering reamer, bore drill, and rifling cutter.
The .44 Special was developed with the .429" bullet and bore diameter.
The .44 Magnum has been around for almost 70 years. Unlike the newer rounds, if you need replacement ammo, you can find it anywhere in Alaska and other places in the lower 48 where you can encounter bears and other dangerous animals. I have yet to see a gun shop that didn't stock .44 Magnum.

Being unarmed at the time, I was very lucky to walk away unscathed from a wild dog pack encounter along old Route 66 east of Kingman AZ. I'd been photographing Santa Fe freight trains and those mutts literally came out of nowhere! I won't make that mistake again.

I had a Ruger Redhawk 4.25" 44 magnum back in 2011 but I sold it a few years ago & I've regretted it ever since. It cost me $689.99 at the time & now it goes for way over $1,000!

Brother, I feel your pain!! I bought the same gun 3 times, never at a good price. Thanks for the comment and the view, and I hope you get the redhawk back sometime.

The old standards for 44 magnum chamber pressure were 43,500 CUP, which converts to 40,600 psi. The new SAAMI standard is 36,000 psi, which is a little over a 10% reduction. The reason why the pressures were reduced was because many S&W revolvers were developing problems. Some revolvers like ones made by Ruger can still handle the older, higher pressure ammo loadings.

    Hope this helps:
    27 May 2024
    I have:
    S&W .44 Magnum 629 5.5 inch barrel.
Henry Big Boy large loop brass with 20" barrel. ((1,900+fps))
The Big Boy at 150+ yards still has more power than the S&W 5.5 inch barrel at point blank range.
I have a scope on my rifle, so compensating for drop is very easy at 200 yards. About 24-28 inch drop.
    I reload:
    Starline brass and range brass.
Brass can be re-loaded 10+ times.
Current cost of new Satrline brass is about $ .30.
    .03 cents per shot.
    Powder:
    Ramshot Enforcer 21.4 grains.
    About $120.00 for 4lbs of powder. = 28,000 grains.
    7,000 grains per pound.
    about .09 cents per round.
    Primers:
Federal Large Magnum or Winchester Large Magnum.
Current prices .12 cents per round.
    I cast my own bullets.
    Lee bullet molds:
    6 cavity 429-240-2R
    Excellent accuracy!
Loads like butter in the Henry Big Boy.
Average price per pound for lead $2.00
(58.3 bullets per lbs.) less than .04 cents per round.
I get it for 1.00 per pound.
I powder coat my bullets with Eastwood.
Price is to minuscule to include.
Then I run them through the Lee sizer die of .430.
I also powder coat my 240 grain .452 bullets and then resize them to .430. Works great!!!!
    Brass .03 cents
    Powder .09 cents
    Primers .12 cents
    Bullets .04 cents
    .28 cents per round.
I have owned and shot more guns than I can count.
Former State Trooper and served 4 years in Kosovo, and 19 months in Afghanistan.
The S&W 629 and my Henry Big Boy are my range favorites and get the most shooting time!!!!! By FAR!!!
Just took a Marine friend of mine out to the Range and he loved the Big Boy so much he bought the same one a week later. He is also saving his cash to by a 629.
I hunt deer ect... I have never needed to take a shot further than 100 yards. The .44 Magnum is the best option for me. PLUS- the side gate of the Henry makes great for topping off the tube when doing a combat reload. Just put a bandolier on and reload rifle and pistol when necessary.
If you need a 30 round magazine for laying down suppressive fire then get the hell out of that area as fast as you can!!!! Runnnnnnn!!!!
