    I own a number of rifles, I love them all, but the M1 has that intangible quality few others have, "soul"!

      Agreed. My Springfield and IHC are great, but another with character and soul in my collection, is Melvin Johnson's 1941 Johnson Rifle. The Johnson rifle would lead to one of firearms most versatile platforms ever, the AR/M16. Its mechanical design comes from the 41' Johnson. The only reason it didn't beat out the Garand was because the Garand had already been adopted, they were considered equal, and thus no reason to change to it. To me with it being the root of the AR platform, its soul shines just a bit brighter.

    I wasn't even looking for my Garand when I got it. I was looking for an AR10. My LGS couldn't get one and had this beauty on the wall. I had them take it down and she came home with me.

      Me too. I was told a widow had an M14 for sale. Turns out it was her husbands M1 from his full career in the Coast Guard. He left instructions in his will about who he would like to see have it. Someone who would care for it and use it. She was caring for her children and grandchildren on her social security alone in a 2 bedroom cabin. I gladly gave her $900 in cash.

    I love this rifle, I used this rifle in 1985 when I was part of the glorious Paraguayan army, in 2020 I had the opportunity to shoot it again in the USA, it brought me tons of pleasant memories, today 37 years later, I still love this rifle and consider it one of the best rifles ever invented, personal preference.

    I have serial #5,390,xxx. Post Korea. Mated with a trigger group at the RRAD. I named her Lilith ( Hebrew: a primordial she-demon) because she bit me, burned me, cut me, and bucked my shoulder but good on our first date. She learned quickly that I won't make those mistakes again and we've been getting along ever since.

    You are a little short on the story. John Garand designed the rifle for a different caliber round. As I understand it, the Army Chief of Staff, Gen. D MacArthur, directed the existing .30 caliber be used because we had millions of them from WW1. We seem to let other issues get in the way of better equipment. This happened in the development of the M14 and it appears to be raising its head with the replacement of the M16. People ask why eight rounds in the M1. The .30 caliber round size made this necessary. It still is an excellent rifle but it could have been better. History needs to be reported.

    • @bad74maverick1
      @bad74maverick1 2 роки тому

      You forget the M14 was never meant to be adopted either. It was the dream of a logistics officer Colonel Rene Studler who wanted the M14. The US had sought out trials rifles and the FN FAL won out. The rifle that won was in .280 and Studler demanded that FAL be in 7.62 NATO even though the .280 out performed it and almost all other NATO countries wanted. The department of defense made an agreement with FN that if they would change the caliber they guaranteed it would be adopted. FN made the change but Studler told them they didn't want the gun after all that anyway, and went with the M14 basically giving FN the finger.

    Anyone notice the blueprints for the rifle, with “John C. GErand?” I don’t know if that’s a typo or this great genius spelled his surname in more than one way. (I doubt it. Who does that?) I’ve heard Mr. Garand’s name pronounced many different ways, but never seen an alternative spelling. Regardless, what a legendary rifle. Wish I owned one.

      You could probably get yourself one at a local gun show. However, it will cost you a pretty penny ranging from $1200 to $2000. I got mine for $800, and this was back in October of 2006.

    • @devildoc225

      .276. Gen MacArthur ordered the rifle to be made in .30 cal 30-06, because of existing stockpiles of 30-06 M1 Ball, which was a 174 grain FMJ boat tail, that was ballistically superior to M2 Ball. The M1 Ball was a real screamer. The reason they went to the M2 ball? The M1 ball would overshoot most ranges at that time, and they were worried about safety issues, with rounds leaving the range, on a flyer. The modern equivalent of the M1 ball, would be the US Lake City Arsenal M72 Match Round, or Federal Gold Medal Match 30-06. Politics...LOL

    Why do Americans pronounce it like that? The poor man tried for a decade to correct everyone but eventually gave up. He even wrote to the NRA starting in Sep 43 then later in interviews. Was It racism against French Canadians ??

  • @Provo647

    No, it was not the finest battle rifle in WW2.. The russians had a better rifle, the STV40, and the Germans had the STG 44, and the G43, far more advanced than the over engeneered Garand, a poorly designed rifle, heavy, over complicated and expensive to manufacture,

    • @endutubecensorship
      @endutubecensorship Рік тому +2

      The SVT40 was a good reliable system, however not as accurate as the Garand. The G43 operating system was based on captured SVT40's.
      The STG44 was a different and new class, the assault rifle:
      - Detachable box magazine
      - Select fire
      - *Intermediate size cartridge* (5.56x45/7.62x39/7.92x33)
      Battle rifle:
      - Primarily semi auto(FN49/M1/SVT40/G43), but select fire as well(FAL/G3)
      - Detachable box mag or enbloc/stripper clip fed
      - *full size, full power cartridge* (30-06/7.62x54/7.62x51/8x57)
      Please keep in mind that the M1 took 10 years to develop, starting in 1927 and adopted in 1937. In comparison the SVT40 had a decade of advancement to develop its excellent operating system.
