    Consider angle iron tabs on your gate post to attach wood rails instead of drilling your gate post.

  • @TheSoloAsylum
    @TheSoloAsylum 7 місяців тому +12

    You might consider a cable/turnbuckle from the top of the steel post to the bottom of the wood post to transfer some weight after your fence is done. Also you certainly need a stop post so you don't rip the hinges off the post when the gate open to far. Maybe it's coming in the next video.

      It's been discussed quite a bit in the comments, I've already been prepared for a cable if need be.

    Permit me to offer a suggestion. First, the gate looks beautiful. Love the look and the monogram. Most excellent. A small suggestion .... Since you didn't use any bracing in the gate itself (I understand the desire for the aesthetic..), you might consider adding some small triangular gussets in the four corners of the gate. This is especially important on the heavier hinge side. If your swing post is solid, and it certainly looks like it is, then any "sagging" or "settling" is in the gate itself. Two long diagonal braces from each end toward the center would be best. You don't need to compromise the look of the monogram area. Just stop the braces at the vertical closest to the monogram. If you don't want to bother, then four triangular gussets, one in each corner of the gate, welded solid to the top and bottom rails as well as the verticals. Light weight steel plate would work fine. I would probably use 1/4" or 3/16" and make them about a foot each way. One last thing. Having the gate post adjustable is a good idea. However, that gate WILL sag under it's own weight. If you start adjusting the gate post to compensate, then all you will have is a leaning gate post and the gate will continue to sag. I don't believe there is any way to prevent that large of a gate from sagging without bracing.
    You DO have a beautiful gate though.!! Nicely done.!!

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому +3

      Funny you mention this, I had a serious conversation with my wife in the shop about gussets. She asked what's that? 🤣 So it's already been considered and we looked at what it does to the clean lines of the gate. We decided to add them only after we see any issues. After hanging for a few days no issues are seen, we will keep monitoring.

      Since the gate is in the closed position the vast majority of the time, I wonder whether it would be helpful to put in a small platform at the far end for it to rest on when it's closed. There would likely need to be some sort of slightly angled "ramp" section leading up to the level resting spot for it to ride up in case it does develop a very slight sag over the years, and that would need to have some sort of frictionless surfacing (or at least minimal friction surfacing or even a rolling bearing) to avoid putting too much strain on the gate opening mechanism, but perhaps that could prevent that sagging you're saying is inevitable with such a wide gate. Just a thought...

    Beautiful work! I'd add another post to the fence side of your hinge post then angle down to it. Your hinge post needs more support. The first good rain and your gate will start to sag over time. I tend to over build though.

      The risk with additional hinges is binding, unless perfectly aligned. I wanted to avoid any additional friction the gate operator had to overcome. This gate has been in operation for a while now, zero issues.

    Gate looks great! Love that you shared the story on the sign. Keeps you real. I will say that those hinges look like 5 inches, maybe 7"? I don't know the weight on the gate, but even the 7" hinges might be undersized for that gate. Maybe a couple more. Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому

      These were rated for 900lbs, but I know there is a lot of leverage. I will pay attention to them and add a 3rd if needed. I want to avoid adding anymore as it adds a potential for binding.

    Andrew have you considered adding a roller wheel on the far end of the gate? It will help support the gate and reduce sag. They have big tire versions that work better in dirt or gravel etc.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому +1

      No, that creates resistance and is not recommended by the gate operator manufacturer per the manual.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому

      That creates resistance and is not recommended by the gate operator manufacturer.

    • @365bubbaluv
      @365bubbaluv 7 місяців тому

      I thought about this as well and believe that gravity will eventually win with the sagging but would go as long as possible without a wheel...if you have to add a wheel eventually I'd put something down to create a smooth surface for the wheel to roll on like millings or something that will pack down

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому +3

      Not needed, if I see sag I'll add a cable to the 6x6 steel post and attract that to the bottom of a 6x6 fence post. I can then tighten the cable with a turnbuckle.

  • @tadnelson4682

    • @TKCL

    As someone that has installed a ton of gate operators..it’s difficult to over build the hinged post, with 20’ leverage…things are going to change. I agree with the lock on gate…when it doesn’t line up, you will know your gate/post has moved. Don’t know anything about the operator, may work for light residential. Nice looking gate/fence.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому +1

      So far almost two months in operation with zero sag. We've had several inches of rain and several severe storms with high winds. That same post is connected to another post via 4 boards to complete the fencing. It will literally have to pull two concreted posts over to sag. One having 640lbs of concrete in its base. I'm sure it's possible, but I'm not seeing any signs of sag. My gate operator and lock are also working flawlessly, I went with a Ghost controls system.

    Andrew, this is Roger Hatton. As normal you came up with a very good design and great workmanship.. I would only suggest that you put locknuts on base plate to prevent loosening of nuts due to the opening and closing of gate over time. I believe that as the weight of the gate moves during opening and closing it will cause the nuts to slowly loosen.

    Put a small wheel on the bottom towards the open of the gate. That'll eliminate any stress and sagging.

    • @TKCL

    WHEW, I made it Andrew... All caught up on Videos
    DId you count how many times someone mentioned a Wheel at the end of the Gate HAHAHAHAHAH
    That is a Pure example of not reading the comments before making one ..
    I have envisioned a gate for My Property and was planning on a Taller Hinge Post so I can tie back away from the post and a Cable down to the Gate at the Halfway point to eliminate any sag and take most of the Weight of the gate.
    I like the Wide area between the Road and the Gate. it Allows someone to turn around and not have to back out into traffic.
    Thanks, Mike M.

    Looks great! If I were you I would but a heavy steel cable from the top of your steel post down to the base of the wood post on the corner. Can then use a turnbuckle to keep that post plumb as it settles.

    Consider adding a wheel to the outside of the get, it’ll take a lot of the weight off the hinges. It’s a simple addition that over time will keep your hinges intact

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому +1

      Problem is that it causes resistance and is not recommended by the gate operator manufacturer.

    Excellent job. Was just thinking could you put a wheel on the bottom at the latch side to take more strain off the hinges or do you think it might bind?

    • @TKCL

      That actually causes more resistance and is not recommended by the gate operator manufacturer.
