    Your best bet on lightning protection is to install a “lightning arrestor” into your power feed upstream from your circuit board. I used to do that on commercial gate openers on the west coast of Florida (the lightning capitol of the world). Believe me,it saved many a circuit board!

    I have the same unit. I have the zombie lock and love it. I also replaced the arm pins with locking pins. I put matching locks on the pins, control box and battery box.
    Also, I would suggest where the arm clamp connects to the gate, drill holes thru the gate and attach it there. That clamp will move as the gate gets hot or cold and your arm will get out of balance.

    Solar low voltage doesn’t need a ground, if you had the ac version, it would probably have one, at least the power supply portion.
    On another note, not sure if instructions told which way to point the solar panel, for optimum output, in the northern hemisphere
    Generally point toward the southern sky, you can look up sun path chart for your exact azimuth, Latitude and longitude location if you really want the best year round optimum charging.

  • @marks7663
    @marks7663 Рік тому

    Hey Sam - ground wouldn’t be required as you are not connected through 120v service or through a low voltage transformer. If you want to earth you unit, your ground lead can tie into the negative battery terminal. That will effectively earth your controller and any other component connected to it sharing the same power supply.

    Good install
    I did one at work and put the latch thing on the other end of the gate just because it's constantly really windy and the latch keeps it from rocking back and forth on the gear stuff inside the opener. So if you're looking for an excuse to "zombie proof" your property there you go

    I live behind a gate like that and it gives me a a feeling of general safety. It prevents people from coming down the road to ask questions, or coming cos they are mistaken about which road to take etc. I do realize a person can get past it, but like a door lock, it makes your place a little more inconvenient than some other places.

    I would remove that ground wire from the circuit board enclosure. It adds potential for lightning damage instead of decreasing. IMO, no ground is needed.
    My reasoning:> the metal fence is the most likely thing to get struck by lightning . When you installed the ground wire it is in contact with the fence.
    If you chose to continue to use a ground wire, I think it would be best to remove it from the circuit board enclosure. Inside the battery box connected to negative might be a better place to connect ground (all RVs are like this, negative DC connected to AC ground)
    To check if this will work properly> disconnect the ground wire. Use a multimeter to check for current flow between the battery negative and ground rod while the gate operator is moving and/or stationary open/closed. If there is no current flow at any time to ground, then the system is grounded as best it can be. Do not do this if there is any current flow to ground, because it will kill the batteries.
    In any case, remove the bare copper ground wire and replace it with insulated wire that cannot conduct stray current from the fence. Even better, add a conduit to insulate and protect the ground wire where it is attached to the post.

    Electrician here: reason why they didn’t provide a ground terminal is because it’s 12v system. Not enough power to harm anything and a ground rod won’t protect it against lightning strikes you would need a surge protector for that. Good install though

    Although we have two ground rods on our electrical box, we still had a lightning strike last month. Scared the buggers out of us, but thankfully no one got hurt except our 10 year old TV. Fried it good. It was very strange, because it didn't bother any appliances at all. Well hubby got an upgrade and its now plugged into a dedicated surge protector. Live and learn.

    You'll be happy with that system. My gate is about 700 feet from the house and hidden from direct view. We used to have "curious" people just wander up and a more secure gate became a necessity. Had the Mighty Mule systems before but they became very unreliable and needed stop points readjusted way too often. The Ghost system is more expensive but rock solid and very dependable compared to the MM. Luckily we had electricity down near the gate so didn't use the solar option but I'm sure it's reliable. I did add the Zombie Lock. Perhaps we don't live in such an honest area as you do 🙃. That has been a great option. One additional thing I did is to get the lockable pin for the attachment of the arm to the gate, making theft of the expensive system more challenging. Also a padlock on the controller unit too, otherwise someone can easily slip the cover off and open your gate. As you said, it's NOT bad guy proof, but at least helps keep the lazier ones away. It's nice that you have line of sight from your house to the gate and can use a remote to open the gate too if necessary. It's a real pain to walk down the long steep driveway to open the gate for deliveries, etc.

    Thanks for posting! You’re lucky you installed a single gate closer, running wire in conduit under driveway is a lot more involved! As for the ground not being included , I think it’s a precaution against attracting lightning , as much as mitigating a strike. Here in Hawaii , basalt acts as an insulator, solar systems succumb to strikes up to a quarter mile away, where it can travel in the ground and seek wiring for an exit!

    Locks are to keep honest people honest...

    • @watcherofwatchers
      @watcherofwatchers Рік тому +10

      Not true. This is a tired expression that doesn't actually represent reality and spreads a defeatist attitude. Locks are to provide an impediment, to slow down or alter the behavior of someone with ill intentions. Sometimes that leads to complete protection from that person, sometimes it is less effective at it, all depending on the skill and motivation of the attacker. Regardless, that is what a lock is for.
      If you truly believed that nonsense about locks, you would not use any lock, ever.

    Probably imho the best accessory to get would be the Ghost connect. Allows bluetooth, wifi or cell signal to open the gate from anywhere. App downloads on the phone. The ability to give secure keys to your friends and family makes it easy for them to open the gate via thier phone. You also can monitor the sytem. Battery status....etc. Alexa and google compatible also.
