- Come along with me to visit the famous village of Avebury … it’s time to see some really old rocks! In a place that I think is more enjoyable to visit than Stonehenge.
In this video I’ll show you the stones of Avebury from the sky and from the ground, after first taking you around the charming and surprisingly NOT touristy village of Avebury… and then at the end I’ll show you the uniquely beautiful Saxon church here in Avebury which was an important point of departure for pilgrims in the middle ages.

Your microphone worked very well in the windy conditions. So glad you are highlighting this arguably the best Prehistoric monumental landscape in the UK. So many tourists visit Stonehenge but don't know that standing stones and other monuments existed across the country.

The thatched walls are a feature of the Wiltshire; My village has them too I used to work in the chapel (No longer a chapel sadly, though it was when I worked there) across from the pub and that building has stone from the circle in it. I always take people to St James' Church too as it's a beautiful building. The Church is actually built outside the henge and the Saxon village was located where the National Trust carpark is today. The High Street and Green street that goes right through the centre of the Henge is Saxon too and goes up to The Ridgeway, and ancient road that was probably there when the circle was constructed.

The brickwork on the house is called Flemish Bond.
The Cove Stone, that's the BIG stone, in the circle is the one that weighs over 100 tonnes and goes underground for at least two metres. The odd pyramid shaped stones were put there by the marmalade chappie to show where the missing stones would be.

Avebury, home to the sunshine! Love the thatched roof on the old bakery. Some stunning buildings, ah the crisps, prawn cocktail wins! Great kissing gate technique. Wow that stone circle is huge, great shot from the sky. Yikes, people pulling down stones 300 years ago, hard to imagine now. Your mic did well in the wind. Wonderful. I have visited Avebury many times a long time ago. It is a pity that the main A4361, which is a busy road, goes right smack bang through the stone circle. A favourite walk is from Lambourn along the Ridge way, a prehistoric byway with spectacular views over the surrounding areas, to Avebury (20 miles) and a well deserved meal and beer break at the excellent Red Lion pub before catching the bus back to Reading. As you say much better experience than Stonehendge. I guess 300+ years ago people really didn't have any idea how the stones got there (giants carried them !) or how truly ancient they were.
Yes absolutely! It is a pity that busy road runs right through things. But as you say, it's still a lovely pub and place to visit. So nice that so many stones still remain after all these centuries!

Yes, the RODE microphone was pricey, but once I learned how to properly plug it in it has been pretty good!
I hope one day they will close the road off through the henge and restore the peace back to this magnificent site. The brick work was Flemish bond Dara, this style usually denotes age, once you get your eye in you can see the different extensions etc usually in stretcher or running bond, i.e. long brick face on long brick face.
Yes that busy road is right in the middle of the henge! They need a ring road round it 😉

Avebury seems to be one of an iconic historical tourist site in the countryside.
Stone henges, indeed, each large stone has quite character.
Stunning stained glass work, art 8:12, bell pole 8:14 and much more charm to the church

I think they enjoyed decorating buildings with all those faces. Sometimes they were important people (like lords or bishops) sometimes characters from books or sometimes just animals or monsters! Thanks for watching 💕
We were there about three weeks ago. Much cooler, wet, and greener.
It was dry last summer! Hopefully it will be greener this summer 😉

Enjoyed your visit to Avebury, Dara and Ian. Beautiful stone buildings and love the thatched roof's. If we're someplace for a stretch we also only film on the nice days. Makes a big difference in the video look! Never knew about a "kissing gate." Shame some of the builders couldn't go find their own stones! Loved seeing the historic stone circle. Did you take a walk to Silbury hill (the largest artificial mound in Europe) and the West Kennet long barrow? The latter is over 5,600 years old.
Also, a few miles away is the huge linear earthwork of the Wansdyke, which overlooks the vale of Pewsey. Hardly anybody seems to know about it.
Then, not so far away is one of the wonders of the canal system, the Caen Hill Flight in Devizes. Further west along the Kennet and Avon canal, is one of my favourite little towns, Bradford-on-Avon, with some wonderful buildings, steep streets and a huge tythe barn. It was once very important as a centre for making woollen cloth, powered by the waters of the river Avon. Follow the canal west, across a couple of lovely aqueducts, and you end up in Bath. I have cycled all that part of the canal and into Avebury itself on several occasions.
I live Wiltshire, it is the most ancient of English counties.

Great video Dara. I always recommend both these stones circles here in Wiltshire, and The Hurlers in Cornwall (on Bodmin Moor) over Stonehenge. You can get 'up close and personal' with those much more than the latter! Really enjoyed this. Take care, Paul 🙂👍

Hi Dara really interesting video of Avebury even in not so sunny weather ! Love the old bakery with a thatched roof and the thatched barn, gorgeous village and that's interesting to know that its a UNESCO site, its gorgeous. That manor is beautiful and so cute that there was a nest in the dovecote. Nice demos at the kissing gate too 🤭
I've heard that there are circles within circles there, I've watched on UA-cam before, its fascinating. So good that St James Church has been worshipping since the 3rd century, it was really beautiful inside. Great footage, thanks for the lovely tour :) ~ Anna ❤👍

@@MagentaOtterTravels Yes, here in North Wales, we actually have a video of it titled " Meini Hirion " if you are intetested. Some people call it a Druid Circle but the name Druid’s Circle is misleading because the stones pre date the arrival of druids by many centuries. The Welsh name is Meini Hirion (“long stones ) Its a fascinating place :)

Kinda funny! Not sure the purpose, and it means a lot of maintenance I would think?
@@MagentaOtterTravels It's more common on cob walls, which are basically built from lumps of clay or chalk. The thatch sheds water and prevents the wall disintegrating. Since that seems to be a drystone wall, presumably it is intended to stop rainwater percolating down into the wall and eventually dislodging the stones.

it is Henge, due to the earthworks around it. either a ditch or earth banks. a Stone Circle is built on flat ground, like the misnamed Stone Henge is.

@@MagentaOtterTravelsI think Stonehenge is still worth visiting to appreciate why and how it was built, why they brought stones all the way from Pembrokeshire in Wales and why they aligned it the way they did to celebrate the solstices. I find that fascinating.

Very good presentation of Avebury. The drone footage was a wonderful way to show the magnitude of the circle and the infused village. Much better place to experience neolithic Britain than it’s more famous cousin, which is why I took you there😊. Great cast!

I have a big fluffy mic cover on my camera and people always ask what is that? It's a dead cat, I say, which confuses them a bit. Makes sense that the little ones are called dead mice 😂 And they do work superbly well. Audio will often be unusable otherwise. Love these villages and stone circles. Amazing to think they were constructed at about the same time as the Great Pyramid. Another lovely job Dara!

Yes, it is a RODE wireless Go. I'm ashamed to admit that the first year I owned it I was plugging the connector cord in backwards and couldn't get it to work! But once I assembled it properly it actually has been quite good !👍

There are some lovely examples of thatched walls in the village of Blewbury if you’re ever near Didcot.

I agreed, much much better than stone hedge. I've been here a few times but not for a few years but always love how you can get hands with the stones and find somewhere nice for a spot of quite time for contemplation. It was in August... not in the worst part of the heatwave (that's when I filmed my Wells and Liverpool videos! 🥵), but it was still warm.
Over 41,000 miles of public rights of way in England and Wales could be lost because they haven't been registered yet. The deadline is 2031. The deadline had been abolished in 2022 but has since been reinstated. (You learn some interesting stuff watching the House of Lords on the Parliament Channel).

i was stationed at Lyneham in the early 80s & have to agree with you about it being nicer than Stonehenge

Avebury stone circles is for the Brits, English Heritage built Stonehenge in the 50's for the tourists.
when I say" Brits " I mean those" in the know", it seems a lot of tourists are just ticking boxes, Bath, London, Stonehenge etc.

It's a wind guard or "dead mouse". The vlogging mics have them and they help a lot!! Every time I don't use my good mic I regret it 🙄

@@MagentaOtterTravels Did that exact walk via Silbury and the Barrow over 30 years ago. A great day out! The village in spring was as beautiful and interesting then as now. Somewhere I have a video of a fieldmouse eating dropped flowers quite unconcerned by the toe of my hiking boot. There was also an old barn with a real estate sign advertising that it had planning permission for an upgrade to a residence. Always wondered what it may have turned out like. 😉

It is always stunning and utterly surprising how people 4500++ years ago managed without any electrical equipment and AI to put up things like this!! And today they are not even capable of repairing holes in the street 🤦♀🤷♀
