Walking ENGLAND'S Widest High Street - Discover Marlborough's Quaint Charm

- Marlborough is an attractive market town on the River Kennet about 10 miles south of Swindon. Marlborough was recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Merleberge.
Traces of Neolithic and Roman occupation have been found in the vicinity of the Castle Mound. During the English Civil Wars of the mid-17th century, the town, which supported Parliament, was besieged and captured. In 1653 a Great Fire destroyed much of Marlborough, and other fires occurred in 1679 and 1690, but the present broad High Street is still flanked with houses dating from the 16th century.
During the rebuilding of Marlbrough town after the Great Fire, the high street was widened and is often claimed to be the widest in England though the actual widest is in Stockton-on-Tees.
At the western end of High street stands St Peter's Church, dating to at least the 12th century. It was here that Thomas Wolsey was ordained in 1498. The church is now redundant but has been transformed into an active community cafe, craft market, and event venue

I'm so happy to enjoy the walk again. I was visiting my daughter in Toronto this weekend, and Sunday passed without my favorite English countryside walk. It wasn't this same even with my family. My Sunday has to have a piece of old, good England. 💗🏰

It's the second widest high street in the uk. it's so wide because there use to be a row of houses down the middle
