  • This hike starts at the incredible, and prehistoric, West Kennet Avenue, an avenue of processional stones leading to the World's biggest megalithic stone circle, Avebury Henge.
After soaking in the Stones and village, we set off towards the mysterious Silbury Hill, Europe's largest artificial hill.
We then head to Britain's biggest and most impressive Neolithic chambered tomb, West Kennet Long Barrow, and explore inside.....SPOOKY!
This is Part 1 of 2, in Part 2 we will keep hiking through this historical landscape to reach Wiltshire's highest points, Milk and Tan Hill, see the Alton Barnes White Horse and walk along some of the awesome Wansdyke, ancient defensive earthworks....so look forward to that!
So please come join us, it'll be fun ❤
Keep safe and keep enjoying those green spaces!
Thank you for being here, all the best, Ceri & Kat!

'Mysteries and Megaliths'.....has there ever been a more compelling title for a YT video? I don't think so! I have been to Avebury and really enjoyed it, much more than Stonehenge. I am also reminded of a truly terrifying children's programme called 'Children of the Stones', when I was a little lad. Hope you are both well. Hi guys. Thanks for giving us great insight into the stones and area. We visited Stonehenge a couple of years ago and it was very interesting. There's also the 9 Ladies stone circle in Derbyshire and there's a myth about 9 ladies dancing and were turned to stone. We will be visiting there soon.

It is like we in sync with our vlogs at the moment long barrow and hill forts, it is brilliant to compare how the long barrow differs what we have both visited. Love that the stone circle is being protected by the sheep haha. Really enjoyable vlog and hope you are both okay.

Super video again guys! I’m always surprised that so many people gravitate to Stonehenge as opposed to the fabulous megalithic landscape of Avebury, as you display here. I have a friend from my schooldays who actually spent a lengthy period camping at Stonehenge (we are old and there was a time when you could do that without being arrested - the pagans, druids, free festivals and massive crowds put paid to that) drawing it, photographing it and generally researching/exploring it. Of course he was familiar with Avebury too and he introduced us to it in the 1970s when we tried an ill informed and ultimately doomed-due-to-good-weather attempt on the Ridgeway. Today he says of these sites and particularly Stonehenge, that if you can back it up with evidence, then any theory you have about what it is for is as valid as anybody else’s. Which is probably as wise an opinion as you can arrive at. Anyway, I think you need to be a hard core megalith fan to appreciate Stonehenge. Granted it’s iconic, but on first inspection, it seems a bit small, almost underwhelming. It gets bigger in your head when you learn what it could be for and what it measures when you are away from it. Avebury, on the other hand, never fails to thrill!

    • @TeaInValhalla
      @TeaInValhalla  3 роки тому +2

Good morning Ian and thanks so much for the amazing feedback, wow camping at the stones and researching them must have been one heck of an experience. Have explored both areas a few time sovereign ourselves, we concur with you that Avebury is hands down the winner for spectical and experience, so much more to see and feel there. Its incredible ❤🏛 really pleased you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for your support, it is really appreciated, stay safe and well, Ceri and Kat ❤☕🤗

@@TeaInValhalla We are blessed with a variety of sites in this country that are stunning. If you are ever in Derbyshire look up Arbor Low and have a walk to it,. Likewise Machrie Moor on Arran has amazing standing stones and few people go. Actually Arran is a fantastic spot - Scotland in miniature - and has great walking and climbing. In fact I would be there now - our friends have a property there (holiday rentals available!) but for COVID and a (very) recent hip replacement op. But as soon as I’m able I hope to be lacing my boots up again (I suppose that will be when I have flexibility back to reach my laces!) - still have Cir Mhor to summit (look it up!). My Stonehenge obsessed friend grew up, had an ‘interesting’ career path and recently wrote a book called ‘Touching the Past’ featuring sites that a) can be approached on foot, b) you can touch (so rules out Stonehenge) and c) are free (see ‘b’!). Dates from prehistory (walk a tectonic plate) to modern times (a giant open cast mining excavator). Fascinating stuff and could prop a door open in an emergency!

Fantastic video. I've always fancied a visit to Avebury but I didn't realise it was as extensive as that. It's funny that Stonehenge gets all the visitors, yet Avebury looks more impressive (IMHO). Avebury reminds me of the Carnac standing stones, which similarly can be visited free of charge. I hope you guys are having a great weekend, Brian and Sah.

Stone circles fascinate me, they radiate history and mystery and my mind is always blown when I am in one, weather I am wearing fancy pants or not😂. How on earth did they move those huge stones all those years ago and I am also fascinated by the difference between males and females to this day😇. You got a cracking day and a free park as well - can it get any better! I love the stone circle at Castlerigg in the Lake District and have gone many times at different times and it is always busy there unfortunately. Fascinating historical knowledge and Avebury sounds an amazing place to visit. The chalk hill was another amazing site but what a shame it was fenced off. Well deserved World Heritage Site, so much history there and when you think when it was actually created, amazing! Cheers Alan

Hey Alan, sorry for the slow response on this one. Kat says the area would have been alot wetter back then, and odds are they moved the stones with water, so the river and such. It was an amazing day and we really enjoyed this walk and Avebury, there is a pub In the village that claims to be the the only pub In the world, in a stone circle lol
Free parking is always great, especially when they are charging an arm and a leg just a megalithic stones throw away!

When I was a school kid in grade 4 or 5, I had a teacher who was obsessed with obelisks and megalithic stones...he had them all over the classroom and we could set them up in different formations...all except a few that could not be touched...at the time I thought it was rather neat, but looking back now, not sure what I make of it...but in the landscape and their history it is all very fascinating!

Nice dead cat (the one Kat is using) - actually does look like a small dead cat and if that isn’t going to stop the wind - nothing will! Also noted, later on, that your dead cat looks more like a bit of foam stuck on (like mine) - I think we can all determine who the boss of the show is LOL. Strange misogynistic stones lined your walk - I can’t believe the WOKE brigade haven’t pulled them down. The “field” to the long barrow was more like desolated barrens - it was almost never ending, I have never seen a field so big lol. We have some burial chambers in North Wales but nothing as grandiose as that one. Fascinating to see inside, well done taking a torch.
Looked like the sun caused you a bit of bother (again) today (too bright, too much auto adjustment from the technology of the camera(s) blah blah blah and those pesky shadows again but you did a great job with the editing!). If those “Henge” thingies have anything to do with druid sun worshipping you need to have a word lol.
And, it was fun to see someone wave back when Kat waved at the church window (going to watch that back now aren’t you?) 8D

Hello friends! Forgot your binoculars, are you birders as well as having an amazing knowledge of both natural and human history? When things in the world get better, we really need to come do a walking tour of the UK. We have some really cool mound builder structures here in in the USA which date back to 3500 BC. My son Bryce and I visited a mound builder city by St Louis called Cahokia on our way out west a couple years ago. At this city's climax in about 1150 CE, this settlement had between 20,000-30,000 people which was larger than both London and Paris at that time. Bryce and I climbed Monks Mound at Cahokia which is more than 100 feet tall and the largest pre-Columbian mound north of Mexico. I love ancient history! Keep Wandering! Thx, Ken

silburry hill, they knew from higher mind [ ] that they had to build as high as necessary to see a certain star dissapeear behind the horizon so the sign of the hunter is in alignement, which also gives the right harmonics overall. to climb that specific height mountain, the effort, the sweat, the inner attitude, and yes, dance your little dance and drink a little water. river. as up so below. where is your west east long stone barrow alignment tears now huh ??, are they in the sky are they ? are they now ? so ancestralsupport with sweat and breath up that hunter hill. [ hill top center aligns with menhir in port st mary on the isle of uhmm man. over west barrow main stone. entrance. like...super precise. pure coincidence. 100 percent hit after some 500+km. the chance... ] where is that rivers water now mate ? is in the sky ? is it in the sea ? is it basically every-ware = is it now ? not only it iso...it cannot - not be so. is weird that you ask about the purpose of music innit. instead of abilty i mean....what kind of persona does that sort of thing.
