  • AVEBURY WILTSHIRE is a place of ancient wonders, captivating history, and enigmatic beauty. This small village, nestled within the rolling countryside, is best known for its awe-inspiring Avebury stone circle, the largest stone circle in the UK.
Avebury is most famous for its megalithic stone circles, which are among the largest and best-preserved in the world. These stone circles, built over 4,000 years ago during the Neolithic period, are a testament to the incredible engineering and astronomical knowledge of the ancient inhabitants.
The heart of Avebury boasts a colossal stone circle, known as the Great Circle. It consists of a massive outer stone ring and two smaller inner circles. The sheer scale of these stones is awe-inspiring, with some standing over 20 feet tall and weighing several tons.
While in Avebury, don't miss the Avebury Manor, a beautifully restored 16th-century home that offers an immersive historical experience.
Avebury in Wiltshire is a captivating and evocative destination that transcends time and the mysteries of Avebury continue to intrigue and inspire, leaving an indelible mark on all who have the privilege of exploring this enchanting place.

All the sights at Avebury can be seen in a couple of hours. We suggest dividing your time equally between Avebury Manor and the Stone Circles.

Warning: The parking machines do not accept card payments. It is also difficult to pay using the RingGo car parking app due to limited mobile phone signal. We suggest making sure you have cash!

The size of this stone circle makes Stonehenge look very small.

Yes, it is the largest stone circle in Britain, originally of about 100 stones, which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles. Thanks for watching David.

@@thewayfarerswalk Over the centuries, many of the stones were either vandalised and moved away for reusage. I read that a local landowner saved and restored them

Yes, there are quite a few missing stones, but it is amazing that so many are still there. Most of the stones that are missing have small stone place markers to show where the original stones would have been.
