i remember being at planet fitness for a year and every friday they would have a donut breakfast and i witnessed someone on the treadmill eating a donut as they workout and it was the best thing i’ve ever witnessed
being around pretty and fit people do kinda make me feel self conscious at the gym but I'd feel worse if a gym was like "no hot and buff people allowed" let me in because it means they think I'm ugly 😭
@@tylersheehan-ford4047 or its like when conservatives say they aren’t racist while doing racist stuff all day every day and gaslight people that its “not racist” to be racist
I love how in the Planet Fitness ads the buff/beautiful people are literally just existing. Why not show them doing actual toxic gym behavior for the ads?
because there is no toxic behavior to portray. it's a gym, a place to workout and that's what people do there, no matter if you're hot or half a ton. That's one of the reasons the ad is so horrible. It's literally saying hot people in a gym, just working out and looking good while doing it for some reason offends the "ugly" or regular folk. It's saying a fit person in general is offensive to see at a gym, even though in reality it should be encouraging. If I was working out and saw a girl with a better body than mine, I'd be motivated, not scared or upset for no reason. That'd be wild--unless for fat people it's different, and they are actually scared of fit people for some unknown reason, which would be pretty funny.
Honestly, the guy saying "I lift things up and put them down" is probably the type of guy who would make me feel more comfortable about going to a gym. He seemed chill.
Honestly me too! In my gym experiences the huge muscle guys are usually really friendly, good natured, and just there to get a good pump in. They're a good lot and usually were more than happy to spot me.
@@gordonslamsay8074 Preach. A couple of times too they've come over and given me tips on making reps more efficient and safe. Those are the types of guys you want around!
I've been household goods driver (mover) for many years. When I first saw that commercial when the guy says "I pick things up and put them down" I thought, "hey! That's what I do!" Dude must be a mover! Then they showed him the door out and figured that they just don't like movers very much. Now to get back to picking things up and putting them down...
I went into golds gym once. I got overwhelmed and started crying, then a hugh body builder guy came and got me and taught me how to deadlift. It was great😂
I feel like if they wanted to lean into the “judgement free” thing they could’ve made an ad where like a bunch of folks are on treadmills going at different speeds, maybe making polite conversation, and then one person is on the treadmill but running *on their hands*
that’s a great commercial idea, not only is it truer to the judgement-free value they tout while displaying the opposite in their actual commercials, it’s also way more clever and memorable
OMG. Literally I was at my local PF and there was someone using their hands on the treadmill. I still have no idea what she was doing but it was hilarious
Honestly, those meat heads you see at the other gyms lifting hundreds of pounds and are there for hours every day, they're sooo supportive! They'll spot you, they'll give you tips if you ask, they'll slowly become your friend if you're there the same times you are. I worked at a big chain gym and the big dudes were always so funny and nice, even though I was overweight and not lifting as much. It's intimidating as hell but they were some of the sweetest and most outgoing people there. ALSO THEY HAVE INSECURITIES TOO. A LOT of them I met still didn't think they were good enough or strong enough or ripped enough, even though I'd look at them and think they were amazing, they always wanted to improve. Ripped people are people, fat people are people, at the end of the day we all want to be accepted. I really find it hard to feel comfortable at PF even with their mantra of.... hating buff people..? The lunk alarm, the signs that say no gallon jugs of water, we're really policing water intake now?? It just really rubs me the wrong way, all of it.
The only legit friend I've had in my adult life was a weight lifter. Had nothing in common, didn't need to borrow each others tools, didn't work together, wasn't a cofriend situation, simply a real friendship. He would always call people out for roids that were bigger than him tho lol

As a fat person myself- the world IS catered to skinny people. That does not mean we are constantly seen as subhuman, “disgusting”, or whatever negative extreme you want to latch onto. People see you as a regular person with feelings and thoughts, and majority of gym bros will be happy you’re trying to better yourself. They’re people with feelings and thoughts too (shocker!) and you’re really just putting the blame of self-hate onto someone else.
The funny thing is you can turn it around and say that the commercial where the lady complains about 'that's why I don't go to gyms' is about a woman sticking her nose into a conversation she doesn't belong in and judging women who are being supportive to each other because they sound vapid to her when they joined together to help each other out. "Not everything is about YOU, Karen."
This gym was definitely designed by someone who resented the popular kids at school. I like how all the buff caricatures in the ads that are designed to be annoying, are literally just minding thier own business and not bothering anyone but are being silently judged by some random person who isnt even working out.
The reason Planet Fitness doesn't want people who look like they work out going there is because their business model is to get as many people on contracts as they can. They know if you're a Lunk, you'll keep coming back, but if you're out of shape, you sign up, not come and they can tell the next perspective client 'look we have lots of room for you', all the while that empty gym has a thousand members who never show up.
I used to go to Planet Fitness... now, keep in mind that I was over 300 lbs when this happened but, I had on a t-shirt that said "working my fat to fit" and got asked to change my shirt or leave because someone complained.
A great way for them to advertise as "no judgment" would be a woman in regular clothes working out and not getting stared at the entire time but that's not possible at planet fitness lol
I was 300 pounds when I joined Planet Fitness summer of 2016. I went every day during the slow hours; took every class they offered & a year later I was at 145; quite strong & building a good bit of muscle. At that time they would hit the lunk alarm while I was doing the exercises everyone else in the class were doing ; telling me I needed to “bring it down “ not long after I was no longer allowed to sign up for any classes at all. I wasn’t showing off; but I was committed to becoming physically strong & healthy at 49 years old. I watched my mother suffering from problems associated with obesity every single day in the nursing home which I would go to visit every morning before I went to planet fitness to #1 take a mental break from caring for both my aging parents one at home/ one in a home #2 take responsibility for my own physical health; loosing weight/correcting my own health problems. I discovered I had a real passion for something I had never thought I would. But never did I ever think that I would be “ a lunk “ unwelcome there. Now I go to a little gym in a warehouse where there are friendly people who mind their own business; gladly spot me if I ask for help & actually became a power lifter. PF has it’s place but it’s not a place to plan to stay because it’s impossible to continue to make progress with them; especially if they are so hurtful that it’s their intention to outcast someone who is simply committed.
You got too fit my man. Planet fitness is like a starter gym at this point. Get used to having a fitness routine. Then when you really start going all out, you move on because they will for sure get hostile. I mean you know this, you experienced it
I've been saying for the last decade that PF has shitty advertising campaign that preys on people's insecurity over perceived judgement that doesn't exist. I'm happy to hear someone finally ciriticizing it.
@@colorbar.s Uh I have never been to a gym or heard of anyone going to a gym where super fit people are openly judging others. I absolutely promise you that anyone who looks like the hulk is only focusing on themself while lifting.
yeah I think perpetuating the idea that 'normal' people are being judged at other gyms is a whole lot more harmful than making people who already go to other gyms feel unwelcome (both bad tho lol). I do wish Scott emphasised that a bit more
The one I went to for a short time had free pizza Friday. I went to this gym for 6 months or so. When I started to get in shape and lose weight, I started getting complaints from others who were “offended” by my progression towards being fit. I quit that gym and just started doing body weight exercises at home. I’ve since lost almost 100 pounds and joined a real gym. PF is a social club for folks who want to get healthy but discouraged to do so by club management.
Feels like a place you’d go when you want to say you’re going to the gym but not actually because we know pf isn’t gonna make them feel like they need to be accountable for their actions. Kind of feels like they’re enabling the unhealthy behaviors that you’re trying to break out of.. waving pizza in front of their faces when they’re trying to get healthier. Seems extremely toxic to me. Congrats on your weight loss!!
That's a BOLD marketing strategy for a business to take. Mostly catering to the gym-shy newbies? Maybe they just looked at the data and saw that their most profitable customer group is folks who sign up in January and forget to cancel their subscription.
If we're being honest, it's a very clever business choice. You double, or even triple your profits while the people that work out get to enjoy a non-crowded gym. Yes, it's shady as hell and they're very obnoxious about it, but a lot of normal gyms operate like that and it actually works lmao
Absolutely! I had 13 months of membership. 14 months? In any case, I went a total of 7 times. Yeah… it’s $300 a year including the January special fee that’s about $100. I did have the $20 plan. But point is, for $300 I could’ve gotten ice skating lessons. Which I did get last winter.
I've never heard that alarm go off at my PF, but I swear if it did I would be so scared I'd fall off the elliptical or drop a weight and probably die. Why would they think that's a good idea?
I’m not gonna lie. I am a fat person but I didn’t like going to the gym because growing up, I saw the planet fitness commercials and thought that if I worked out, people would judge me. And now I go to the gym and I love it. It’s one of my favorite places to be
That is great to read. The issue now is that they went judgements in the opposite direction, which is also wrong. And they regularly push either pizza or donats into your throat, so would never actually become fit.

@@Knaifuwaifulaifu i cant do anything about my weight due to allergies, conditions, and physical inabilities. because of that i have an ED and struggle to keep my weight above 100 lbs. the grass isn't always greener.
I knew a girl who went to a planet fitness just because her gym was doing renovations and needed a place to weight lift and got kicked out for the amount of weight she was lifting. For making ppl feel judged haha
The most welcome I felt in a gym is one where people were the biggest. They even let my friends and I in for free to try it out. Everyone was a massive built brick wall and then we had fat me and my unfit pals. They showed us the ropes and watched as we beat the crap out of each other in the boxing ring. The fighting was our idea, it wasn't an initiation. I never went back but always wanted to.
The funny thing is not only does “grunting” help w your breathing during a hard workout but dropping your weights is sometimes the safest way u can get rid of them when you’ve over-exerted yourself so this gym has great rules lol
As a PF goer, you literally need to grunt sometimes. I don’t get that stupid concept of not grunting, like I grunt during exercise, my bf grunts, others grunt. It’s normal
That shower commercial is almost great because ironically, a bunch of people of different shapes, sizes, ages, and genders coming together for a doo wop performance after a workout would be a great way to show inclusivity, especially when she provided the baritone that they clearly needed to complete their group!
Body builders are probably the kindest, gentlest, patient and supportive community out there. Anyone who actually wants to get in shape, I recommend going to one of those "meathead" gyms, and go up to literally anyone and ask them to help with your routine. They'll be happy to help, trust me!!
I honestly wouldn't mind going to one of those gyms. But I dont know how to find one in my area😅. It's not exactly a place where there's a lot of fit people. My old city would have been far easier to find those places. Because honestly, I'd love to actually know what I'm doing and possibly have someone to workout with.
I've seen the same thing at PF though. I don't understand why people are so against Planet Fitness. It's a perfectly fine place for a ton of people, and there are lots of very fit people at my local PF who would be more than happy to help you out.
The "calling people a lunk for grunting" thing got me. My 250lb ass used to lift weights at home and during particularly difficult squats where I was pushing my limits I would sometimes grunt, groan, and even moan while trying to get through my last reps. It just HAPPENS when you're pushing yourself because your muscles really would rather you stop trying to tear them apart so they have to rebuild stronger. It's not a ripped person thing.
My stepdad tried going to planet fitness after getting out of prison, he worked out a lot while he was in there and was just a huge guy, and they kept trying to tell him he wasn't welcome because he was a "powerlifter", which he absolutely wasn't. They were fully just being shitty to him because he was built large and muscular.
@@ericrivera8410 Same here too. It's more about the employees and members that go there, just like everywhere else. If the employees are chill then the experience will be chill, if the employees and members are whining pricks then your experience will be shit(That's when you find a different gym).
Been going to a Planet Fitness near my place for over a year. I see overweight people, elderly people, trimmed dudes and girls, and really buff guys. Never heard the lunk alarm, never even see the staff confront someone unless they are helping out someone new. The staff are pretty chill and everyone just sort of does their routine without issue.
I guess it varies pretty widely at each location then. There’s lots of comments here of people talking about how they started going to PF when they were overweight, but once they trimmed down & buffed up they got booted out, even though the only thing that changed was their appearance. You seem to have gotten lucky with a chill location lol
My planet fitness is the same. Everyone in every shape just shows up and works out. The staff are super nice to everyone. And I’ve had super buff guys give me great lifting advice
That’s my experience too! I see people of any shape, size or age there, never heard the lunk alarm go off, especially if something like weights gets dropped, and the employees/the ones that are at the front desk are very chill.
As a former planet fitness employee: they’re owned by Sun Tan City, which is why they have tanning beds, and they run the gym like any other business, not like a gym. They are judgmental, towards the gym bros. In their eyes, there’s more beginners than people who are super serious about lifting and building muscle. That’s why they have like two smith machines and a “cardio theater” bc beginners are going straight to the treadmills and bikes.
If I could add on to this. They clearly don’t want you to meet your goals. They serve free pizza weekly which is nice if the goal of going to the gym wasn’t to stay healthy and pizza is probably the opposite of this. The weights are actually labeled incorrectly. The membership claims it’s 10 dollars a month but with the fees it becomes much more expensive. And as you said it’s mostly cardio equipment which should not be the main reason you go to the gym that’s just a waste of money.
Planet fitness IS totally a business model first, gym sometime later. They cater toward beginners because they're most likely to not come... But still pay and forget about the annual fees.
@@BrianaLynn7 I’m fat myself so I don’t really know what you are talking about lol. When I’m fucking trying to lose weight I wouldn’t want someone hanging a pizza in front of my face. After I got over the fact that I don’t need to be given a reward for doing the bare minimum for my body I’m finally only overweight and no longer obese.
@@BrianaLynn7 if you want pizza, then you should eat pizza. If you are going to the gym, maybe a slice of pizza isnt the first thing you wanna stuff your face with immediately afterward. Also, if you are spending money on a gym membership, it logically follows that you are aspiring toward a body that approaches those of the "skinny ass fit people" that you so resent. The business model is pretty simple. They cater to beginners, but beginners eventually become experienced and experienced people dont go to Planet Fitness. So the company is sabotaging you with pizza and ice cream, and discouraging people with experience from coming to the gym, in order to keep thier captive base of plucky beginners. Its pretty pernicious.
I was at planet fitness and this guy has used dumbbells that were too heavy so I ran over to grab one of the dumbbells so he didn’t hurt himself. It kind of slipped out of my hand and hit the ground and the alarm went off and one of the employees came over and told me not to drop the weights and that they don’t do this here. I tried to explain what happened but the person just walked away. I left and haven’t returned since.
It's the biggest judgment zone 😂. Every gym fail comp is mainly people at planet fitness making fun of other people there. They should just stop with the slogan and come up with something new

These are my Planet Fitness stories. I was a college cheerleader, I had 3 hour practice seccions and had to go to the gym on days off to build up strength to catch and hold the flyers when doing stunts. So I naturally drank alot of water. I once brought a gallon of water, no member complained but the staff was staring at me the whole time. When I started stretching the manager came up to me and told me that they'll let it slide this time, but I couldn't bring it again cause people could relate a gallon to bodybuilders and they could feel intimidated and be discouraged from working out. My face was like 👁👄👁, bruh I'm 5'5 and weight around 160 (at the time) I don't think I'm intimidating anyone. I'm gay and from Puerto Rico, it's 100 degree temperatures all year round, so one particularly HOT day I decided to wear a crop top and shorts. I was told that I couldn't wear that, while I'm not really muscular I have an athletes type of body, so I was told that wearing clothes that revealed my stomach and thighs could make other insecure about their body, mind you I was getting many compliments from the old ladies and teenage girls about my bright pink crop top and blue unicorn shorts. I also always been very bottom heavy, always had big thighs and a big butt, so I can squat a high amount, well another time I was told that I had too many weights on my bar and I was giving for a third time the speech of about how I could potentially intimidate others from work out and make them feel insecure because they can't squat the same amount I can. I proceeded to tell them how tired I was of their BS "no judgment" policies, all I was trying to do was get my workout in at a cheap price cause as a broke college students I couldn't pay all those professional gyms. Btw they were also gonna charge me for canceling my membership. Then the pandemic hit and they offered to cancel memberships for free since they wouldn't be able to provide their services. I took the opportunity and have never gone back to a Planet Fitness.
the clip with the jacked woman made me gasp. in what world are muscular women, especially muscular older women, some kind of privileged group that deserves to be kicked out of safe spaces? women that look like her should be celebrated, especially in the environment she clearly finds joy in.
As a previous employee of one I was asked by my manager to ask someone to change their shirt since it was *too* revealing. Granted I am a gym rat myself and I had talked to this member many times before, he was super nice and never caused an issue. It was just your average gym stringer shirt, so I mentioned it to him and he just said, "okay, i want to cancel my membership." I felt really bad because he was very informative to me as someone getting into competitive body building to have a fellow "meathead" feel so ostracized just for wearing a shirt. Planet Fitness does indeed suck major balls
Sounds like a big Ole cry baby to be honest. Just put on a different shirt next time. Most other places in the world require a certain level of attire too.
I have sound sensory issues too and the idea of a gym with no scream grunting and banging dropped weights is great... except for the obnoxious alarm that'll go off if one of those things does happen. Really defeats the point.
YES oh my god... That would startle me so bad, I would feel sick and agitated for an hour. I wouldn't ever voluntarily go anywhere that a siren might go off because someone grunts too much... Those odds are unfavorable.
@@Wolfgang8-Y I have both sound and smell sensitivity to a fairly crippling degree so gyms are already a nightmare for me! Weights being dropped would be bad but a siren is the one way to make it worse. If they could just quietly warn people to not do that it would actually be nice 👍
Body shaming is an issue wether you’re doing it to thin or thick people. I’m fat af and those commercials just reenforce the fact that people are going to be looking and judging your body while you’re working out.
It’s inevitable, stop caring what others think and do it for yourself, even after a week you’ll feel better about yourself. Just remember that most of the time you’ll not feel like working out. Stay hard dude/dudette.
It also reinforces to fat people that thin people are judging you. I’m fat and been to a few gyms in the past and can promise 99% of the time no one notices you or cares enough to bug you…unless you’re using equipment they want to use next
But we live in a society of double standards. It's not racism if it's against this race, it's not body shaming if it's against this body type. If you're not a part of the victim group then hypnotically you're allowed to be subject to mistreatment purely of who you are.
@@toddysurcharge771as someone who is “woke,” it is super weird to insinuate that cis women who are muscular are really men who should be kicked out or banned from a gym for being muscular and female

I understand that seeing those who are stronger than is a bit scary but you shouldn’t let it detract you from trying get healthier.
I'm a broke college student so I go to Planet Fitness. They got rid of the weight scale in the name of inclusivitiy which is super annoying but I can't really complain. Thanks to actually caring about my health and an affordable gym I managed to lose 100 pounds. I am no longer obese and at risk of diabetes. My blood pressure is actually on the lower side now. I feel better and look better without a big drain on my wallet so I will give them that.
lamibon xD, Absurd thinking. We shouldn’t be organizing the world around a small percentage of the population with a disorder. They’ve removed a useful fitness tool.
Actually you can complain, as a scale is something that any normal and rational fitness facility would include as it is an important part of fitness. But glad to hear about your progress :)
I thought about joining planet fitness and honestly the existence of the lunk alarm turned me off immediately. Just the idea that at any time a loud ass alarm could go off is enough for me to stay away.
I have aspergers syndrome so the alarms would actually hurt my ears like I'll actually curl up and while I can't afford a gym membership if I could planet fitness is the last place I would be
I've been to several gyms over the last 30 years. I have been both chunky and super fit. Right now I'm fit. No matter where you go there will always be someone judging. It's human nature. Don't let others insecurity infringe on you. Just do your workout and mind your own business and you will be just fine.
Intentionally getting kicked out of a planet fitness is like signing up for a little league game and then bragging that you got kicked out for kicking the other team in the shins
Agreed, I felt judged when I went into planet fitness. When I joined one of those "intimidating" lifting gyms my form on lifts were super bad and I was pretty chubby. People were coming up to me telling me they see me working hard and loosing weight and people started congratulating me, and people always would come over and nicely help me with my form. Planet fitness if for people who want to feel like they're doing something.
As someone with anxiety/paranoia and sensitivity to loud noises, any place that had an alarm that FEELS as if it could go off the moment you accidentally drop a weight, regardless of if it happens or not, would not be a "judgment-free zone" to me. That would be way too nerve-wracking for me to even bother with, no idea what they think they're achieving with it. Regardless of if it ever goes off or not, or even if someone has to manually do it, it'd still bother my paranoia to know it's there. Great video Scott!
Exactly why I stopped going there. I have PTSD, and hate loud noises. Even going late at night to avoid crowds, it happened frequently. Only took a few days of that and I was done with it.
Someone has to manually flip the alarm. I’ve never seen one go off and I’ve always been told that they don’t like to use it because they don’t want to single anyone out.
@@ericrivera8410 To be very clear, since some people are missing the point with this, it's not always about whether or not the alarm goes off. So what I find very interesting about planet fitness is the fact that they have a sign that states "judgement free zone" but then simultaneously stereotype a certain time of gym goer, typically a chad with a nice physique that he most likely worked hard for, cut off tank top and a backwards cap. In my experience, generally the most "gymtimidating" men in the gym - some of which may even be wearing the stereotypical clothing items and display the muscularity of a "lunk"- tend to be the nicest, most down to earth and helpful people. Now why is that? Well, because they know what it is like to put in the effort in order to achieve success. They understand the mental process and dedication it takes. They have been through the journey and then in return want to help lift other people up as well.
I got kicked out before for using my own yoga mat barefoot and in a sports bra. The thing that confused me the most was them saying my sports bra was against their dress code "because we're a judgment free zone".
I go to a pf and every girl woman under 30 wears a sports bra and yoga pants I'm surprised you got kicked out for that bc it seems totally accepted here.
In my experience gym bros are usually the nicest people you'll meet, they're passionate about what they do and very down to earth, no one makes fun of how you look if you're a really overweight beginner or a professional body builder, the fact you decided to do something healthy and productive like working out is never something myself or the people I work out with would judge you over
Agree with most of this, my only issue with gym bros has been them having no other hobbies to talk about because they have a job, the gym and sleep (maybe a girlfriend, best case scenario) in their life. So we have a total of 2 things to ever talk about.
Absolutely! I was stuck in my bench press, and this HUGE dude came up to me and lifted it up. I was bench pressing MAYBE 45 lbs and was so embarrassed, but he was just super nice about it and went on his way. Truly one of the nicest things a stranger has ever done for me.
My Planet Fitness gripe is that when the not a gym came to my town, it gained a ton of female members because they had tanning beds. A couple months later, it was found that a client and one of the management had set up a couple cameras in the ladies’ changing room. So that just turned me off of the purple palace for good
I’ve got a heart condition where if I get startled I might go into cardiac arrest. It’s important for me to work out, but I guess I can scratch Planet Fitness is off my gym list.
I'm physically disabled and I get the most support from gym buffs who are complete strangers. The only judgement/rudeness I receive is from people like these in the commercial.
5:56 I like how they literally have themselves kick somebody out for having fun and vibing in this ad Also I genuinely don’t think many girls with that bodytype and overall appearance exist, that poor lady’s gonna feel more isolated than ever
I don’t have planet fitness in the UK but when I used to regularly go to the gym there was this one guy I saw pretty often who screamed like he was in dragon ball z and he offered to spot me and was one of the most supportive guys I’ve ever met
I think the implication was supposed to be "there aren't going to be gatekeeping fitness jerks here" the only issue is the people they show being "jerks", usually are not doing anything wrong except existing with the body the other person wishes they had... the only thing those 3 girls were doing was complimenting each other. They said nothing about the other girl. they didn't look at her smugly or say something negative about non-fit people in general, they just complimented each other in a way that had nothing to do with anybody else. If simply existing near somebody who you feel is hotter than you makes you feel self-concious that is your problem and not theirs. I have been to planet fitness and like 300 lb ladies will just be glaring at me while barely peddling a stationary bike... Assumably just because I am skinny. I did not look at them or say anything to them but there they were glaring at me. Like Geez... I guess I am sorry I weighed less than you within your line of sight. because apparentally that is enough to insult you... I could go on for hours talking about working at PF, it was an absolute shitshow. We couldn't use the staff locker area with the lockers, showers, and toilets we had to use the same as the members. We ate and took our breaks in a storage closet because it was steps away from the desk. Many members rightfully complained about the counterproductive pizza nights (less the coffee and bagels mornings tho), chocolate or grape tootsie rolls at the desk that we weren't allowed to hide, and tanning. Also it's fucked to film in a gym, people don't want to be in your video/pics especially not when they're working out. The employees are overworked and don't get paid enough to deal with more idiots. PF is hardly a gym, more a business with gym equipment and merch. The regulars and staff are what can make it a nonjudgmental space, not the company that's for sure.
I was fired on Day 3 of a new PF. Franchise owners came in, took one look at me, and told manager to let me go. I’m not that big or fit…more so than most, but not a musclehead. Ironic as I was hired because I was willing to regularly work the graveyard shift.

Went to PF for a bit and felt weird because I had no clue what I was doing. Started going to a more weight lifter gym full of the people planet fitness discouraged. No one ever bothered me or judged me and many people would offer advice and help if they saw me using a machine wrong or lifting incorrectly. It cost more, but I went more often.
tbh those gyms are better too purely because those people who know what they’re doing will help and inform you if they see you are doing something that may injure you down the line! i think people think working out is supposed to hurt, but they don’t realize it’s not supposed to hurt your joints or be sharp pain, so at places like planet fitness they tire quickly or injure themselves and then swear off working out because of it. i always prefer someone to point out if my form is incorrect rather than not, because i know they are truly just concerned for my safety and well being, not judging.
I once had someone ask me for help when I was working out and I happily helped them and the staff came over and told her to stop asking people for help.
@@FinickyFiddle wtf!!! like that’s so bad, if you don’t get feedback from others (feedback SHE PERSONALLY REQUESTED), how are you supposed to learn or grow? what if she’s hurting and asking if her form is wrong or if there’s an alternative method that doesn’t cause pain? it just proves that they truly don’t care about people who really just want to try to workout, they just want to maintain a customer base of insecure people who will only come once a month if at all yet continue paying for the membership.
I like how in the trailers the only ones being judgemental are the "normal" people. The buff and hot people are all just working out with no care for anyone else.
I think PF was a really good starting point for me. It was cheap and close and it got me into the habit of going to the gym regularly. When I started lifting instead of doing cardio, I just couldn’t use PF anymore, and I’m really only an intermediate lifter. Mine didn’t even have any squat racks, just smith machines, and a lot of their machines maxed out way below what I needed them to (the leg press machine only went up to 400 lbs).

@@katc2040 Coming from someone who's never been straight-sized, being fat or any other non-standard body size shouldn't have to make people feel like they're forced/restricted to only specific gyms. Regardless of body size, you shouldn't have to be judged or bullied in a GYM of all places, since people usually go there to get healthier in the first place.* (*Just to clarify, weight≠health, obviously. There's a bunch of videos that explain this and are scientifically proven true.)
@@BrianaLynn7 Dude, I'm fat, and always have been. I've never been straight-sized and have been bullied for my weight before even as a child. What my comment was trying to say is that being fat should not matter when it comes to gyms, as it's wrong to bully people in general. I suppose that I should've clarified that my comment was coming from the pov of someone fat and that what I meant is that it's awful when people have to fear being picked on for their size at a place where people exercise (and often already feel vulnerable due to the culture of anti-fatness). I'll be updating my comment to prevent further misunderstandings though, lol. The last thing I want to do is invalidate people who've gone through the same shit as me. It's really dehumanizing when you're treated like shit just for existing in a differently built body.
@@BrianaLynn7 i don’t know how many gyms you’ve gone to and if you’ve ever gone frequently for an extended period of time, but as a person who lifts and is also fat, the people i’ve felt the most judgement from have never been the ultra fit people. if you go frequently you actually make friends with or at least chat with most of them as well as the staff/trainers. when i first started i 100% felt what you feel. but after a while i realized most of it was my own anxieties in my head, and i was projecting them onto others - e.g. someone makes eye contact with me for a second then looks away with a blank or hard-set face, i would perceive that as them scoffing at me, when really they just happened to look my direction during their own workout, which is a hard thing that often makes people grimace. imo a lot of that “judgement” people feel (again, myself included when i started) is often built up by hollywood and advertising expectations as well as personally feeling anxious and down on yourself. this especially happens when you’re forcing yourself to get into the habit, because it SUCKS and going is SO HARD and then you feel SO SORE afterwards!! and then you have to do it again, ugh right? and understandably those added stressors amplify your own anxieties that you are probably going to the gym to address, so the stress is very acute. believe me, i have very high and medicated anxiety, so it was a big big hurdle for me to finally come to peace with these things, and i still sometimes will lapse into feeling that way. in my experience, i mostly feel judgement coming from beginners who are insecure about not knowing much about their form (understandable! you can’t know unless you practice and learn!), or about how they look at that gym (when no one is looking at you, they’re focusing on their own goals and workout), or from thin rich women in lululemon who come to gossip on the elliptical with their friends and then leave (and therefore are not really there to workout). but dedicated gym people are all about self-improvement, and they love and relate to others who are also trying to improve in some way. if there is any judgement, which there always will be someone in a large public place who likes to judge others, it’s THAT person’s problem, not yours! judgement stems from insecurity, so just know they are judging you because they wish to put you down in order to make themselves feel better. and instead of feeling insecure from their judgement, try and empathize with them and feel sorry for them, because they obviously have some demons they need to tackle. TLDR; i understand deeply the struggles of being fat in a fatphobic world. it’s caused me a lot of grief, eating disorders, and other struggles since i was very young (and had an older sister who was a model, yikes right?). but though people do judge sometimes, i’ve found that it’s either in my head, or they’re the asshole. don’t let them get to you, and don’t let them stop you from working out, making friends with people at the gym, or asking for help with your form and other guidance.

The fact that they shame anyone fit at a gym is insane. When my dad first wanted to work out there they told him no because he was too bulky and intimidating or some other stupid thing like that.
I never understood PF's marketing. I work at a gym and I'm overweight, never a day in my life have I felt judged for that while behind the desk. And when I workout people are excited to see me in there, talk to me, whatever. And so many of our regulars are great friends regardless of size. As soon as you start advertising as a "judgement free zone" while excluding certain groups of people, you're creating a breeding ground for judgement. Also, maybe it's a good idea to cater to people that are constantly coming to your gym and will likely never cancel their membership because it's part of their daily routine? Just a thought.
I just want to thank you for clearly displaying the sponsor block on the progress bar for anyone who wants to skip it, such a gentleman move, thanks man.

I haven't been to Planet Fitness, but at every 24 Hour Fitness I've ever been to there's been some creep slowly using a leg machine that has a good view of eye candy. It's super creepy and way way worse than any obnoxious gymbro, and the staff won't do anything about it. Thankfully my current gym, a much smaller chain, doesn't tolerate that.
Annnd that's why models shouldn't be in a gym...... Don't blame the lurkers.... If you're already skinny and fit you can afford lipo if you feel you need it. Model looking people get free stuff all the time anyhow.

A big problem I have with planet fitness, is that their employees generally don't care about health and fitness. It'd be like hiring a chef who doesn't care about cooking, or a waiter who doesn't know the menu. Most gyms hire people that can double as both general labourers- cashiers, front desk, customer support, etc- and as actual trainers. At the gym I go to, owned by a local dude who happens to own a big garage, I have seen workers work to prevent injury whil strolling around doing their job. I was honestly shocked when I saw the JACKED man, tasked with replacing garbage bags, sprint to spot someone on the bench press and say that going to heavy on the bench with no spotter is dangerous, and continuing to do so would have him removed from the gym as no one wanted to see someone get injured. I have never seen a planet fitness employee that looks fit.
That’s the entire reason why they hire them, they don’t care about their health and are out of shape except for one or two so everyone who comes in out of shape and what not doesn’t feel bad which I a stupid concept.
As a personal trainer I have worked at many gyms. ALL gyms hire questionable people. You cannot just put that solely on PF. I can name 12 different brand and boutique gyms that hire overweight people
As a big guy that recently started going to a real gym, the only "interactions" I have with the other people are generally supportive. I'd never go to Planet Fitness for 2 reasons 1. I actually want to get fit 2. I have a BIG water bottle
Honestly, it really just depends on your location. Most towns and areas PFs will be pretty chill and operate like any normal gym. I've noticed that it's usually the ones in bigger cities where you get the jugdement or the people sitting and eating or on their phones rather than actually working out.
Planet Fitness has always weirded me out. If somebody is slamming weights too loudly or genuinely being noisy while lifting, it makes sense to approach them and ask them to be a bit quieter for the sake of those around them. Making ads to shame people like buff women and bodybuilders doesn't make for an accepting environment, though. The alarm seems like a shaming tool anyway. You could just approach unruly guests and politely ask them to be more mindful. Heavy lifters with anxiety must hate it there.
I think I have one of the very very few planet fitnesses where it’s extremely clean, the workers are supportive and nice, and the gym goers are like little angels. Been going there for a little over a year and anytime I go to another planet fitness I cry a lil
same! i started going over the summer, and the days i couldnt go but my mom went the employees would ask where i was and if im doing ok. i also never ever heard the lunk alarm
Lucky you! I think a lot of the staff at my pf wish I wouldn't even show up. The majority are unfriendly and cold. No greeting, no smiles, no nothing but stoney silence. The few who are nice get punished and then don't make that mistake again.
Strangely enough, my experience at the Planet Fitness I go to has been really great! I'm an ultra skinny guy trying to bulk up, and I've been going with friends. We've been having a good time, and the employees are super nice! The "gymbros" are pretty chill as well, and never get in trouble/kicked out. I think it ultimately depends on what PF you're at, and what the environment is like.
Yeah I agree, the PF I went to sometimes had a grunting lifter echoing the halls. No one said a thing to him, no alarm no nothing. Maybe a small town thing?
Same...I've never had any negative experience at any of the PFs I've been to and I've seen plenty of people exercising intensely (I do) and wearing minimal clothing. There are plenty of people that are in incredibly good shape and are muscular at my home gym so I'm kind of surprised reading all of these negative comments. Have literally never seen anyone get kicked out. And I drop weights all the time when they're too heavy and have never been so much as looked at sideways for doing so. A 75 pound dumbbell isn't easy to softly lower to the ground once you've exercised to hypertrophy. Fact.
Honestly from my experience at a normal gym, everybody is usually super nice and welcoming, especially when I first started out. I think that the" judgement free zone" is literally just a place to judge people 😂
I was a member at planet fitness for a while and I really enjoyed it. I am very much the type of person that they're marketing too though. I am a very self conscious person and have never been good at working out or being active. (I was always the last person picked for any game in PE). There were people of all skill levels at my gym and I really didn't feel like anyone cared what I was doing. In my experience, Planet Fitness did really seem judgement free in actuality than in their marketing. Edit: Reading through the comments, it sounds like people's experience vary from location to location.
I feel exactly the same. No one at my location seemed to take the lunk alarm seriously, because it has never gone off in the years I've been going, and most of the people who go are super in shape. Anyway, I really like my planet fitness and it's been the healthiest part of my life for a while (I also fit into their target marketing demographic) but it seems like other locations are more jerks about it all
Similar to you, I’m very self conscious. Afraid of doing the exercises wrong, being judged, and comparing myself to other levels. At both PF’s I’ve been at, particularly my current one, I’ve never felt judged. I went from being scared to do exercises alone without my bf there to guide me, to being able to do them alone and just zone out. I feel like there’s people of all skills levels, fit and not, and it makes me feel more welcomed.
That's not exclusively Planet Fitness. Most people that go to the gym are only mildly interested in what you're doing at best. The only time I ever really stop and watch someone is out of admiration (ex. lifting something really heavy, having good technique, or performing an interesting exercise I might want to look into later).
Planet fitness is such a bizarre thing to me, especially since it's popular when I'd expect it to be more niche. I'm Russian and I'm used to gyms being very typical or the luxury fitness/spa center kind, we also have a strong street workout/calithetics culture and I don't think people are bringing donuts to that lol
I’ve never actually gone there before(mostly because when I work out I work out at home or in my apartment), but it is interesting to hear about these types of gyms that really fit the whole “lazy fat American stereotype”. They’re not doing the US any favors in that regard.
As someone who worked at Planet Fitness for a year, I can say without a doubt that it was the worst experience I’ve ever had at a job. I worked part time and between the time I started and then quit they had gone through 19 other employees for my same position. And all the very judgmental rules and shady business tactics were enforced heavily or else we were threatened with being fired. Almost lost my job for “Going off script” and also “Not getting enough peoples card on file”. It’s pretty horrible.

No. It's a calculated business decision. They don't care at all about actual fitness.

Agreed!
I mean sometimes I do a quick glance for motivation like “someday I’ll get like him…one rep, one set, one one day at a time”
I was 300 pounds when I joined Planet Fitness summer of 2016.
You really are a warrior. That’s some good progress and I hope I can be nearly as successful in my journey.
You got too fit my man. Planet fitness is like a starter gym at this point. Get used to having a fitness routine. Then when you really start going all out, you move on because they will for sure get hostile. I mean you know this, you experienced it

@@IndieHellCat The relationship between planet fitness and the fitness community is an irreparable clusterfuck lol
This is easily the most enlightened and intelligent (and most likely accurate) response to this video.
The New Year’s Resolution Gym Memberships are actually how a lot of gyms make steady profits!
That IS their business model. 92% of "members" never go to the gym.
I've never heard that alarm go off at my PF, but I swear if it did I would be so scared I'd fall off the elliptical or drop a weight and probably die. Why would they think that's a good idea?

Body shaming is an issue wether you’re doing it to thin or thick people. I’m fat af and those commercials just reenforce the fact that people are going to be looking and judging your body while you’re working out.
This tho 100%
You can’t oppress privileged people so no you can’t body shame fit people just like you can’t SA men and whites can’t be victims of police brutality

Never met a regular gym goer that didn't have an overbearing asshole personality.

Jesus that sounds terrifying, I’m particularly hard to startle but with that on my mind I feel like I’d be jumpy.
That sounds terrifying! I'm easily startled and would probably constantly go into cardiac arrest
I'm physically disabled and I get the most support from gym buffs who are complete strangers. The only judgement/rudeness I receive is from people like these in the commercial.
5:56 I like how they literally have themselves kick somebody out for having fun and vibing in this ad
Also I genuinely don’t think many girls with that bodytype and overall appearance exist, that poor lady’s gonna feel more isolated than ever
I don’t have planet fitness in the UK but when I used to regularly go to the gym there was this one guy I saw pretty often who screamed like he was in dragon ball z and he offered to spot me and was one of the most supportive guys I’ve ever met
This made me howl lol
You got an upcoming Super Saiyan helping you
I think the implication was supposed to be "there aren't going to be gatekeeping fitness jerks here" the only issue is the people they show being "jerks", usually are not doing anything wrong except existing with the body the other person wishes they had... the only thing those 3 girls were doing was complimenting each other.
One lady actually asked me why I was even at a gym because I was "already skinny".... I was lifting weights....
"Already skinny" wow people really have no idea how health works do they
@@thepinkestpigglet7529 nah, that's how fitness works, you get thin and then your done. You can just sit on a couch and eat pizza for the rest of your life and never gain a pound

@@fungusonus not only that but skinny=healthy. There's genetics, diet(even with exercise). I 126 lbs and I'm already take BP meds because of my genetics.
I get that all the time! "You're already in shape. Why are you working out???" They really think that once you reach your goals, you can just stop working out and go back to eating crap lmao.
Bizarrely enough this might have motivated me to try gym exercise again. I just can’t seem to put myself in the right head space at home and don’t particularly want to buy weights
That sucks dude…like what’s the point of having space for staff built into the building but then telling the staff they can’t use it? The counterproductive as hell
@@thelonleyUchiha1 Didn't even add that despite living in a liberal city as trans/queer person I was no stranger to verbal harassment by gym members (and occasionally concern from management) especially when just trying to clean the locker room. Gyms are strange places...
Planet Fitness supplying you with pizza just sounds like customer retention they're fattening you up to keep you working out
Sounds like you want folks who work out to have bad/disordered relationships with food. Just because you’re working out doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a slice of pizza.
@@itisyerdad it's a joke pointing out how a corporation focused on Fitness would gain monetarily from keeping its customers from being fit because the longer the customers are not fit the longer they have to keep paying that subscription

4:30 who the hell approved this ad?! oh my god that is sooooooooo bad for so many reasons…. The ad makes it really confusing on the exact reason why she was kicked out... to me, my first thought was she was kicked out because of the deep voice (maybe trans based on her showering in the men’s locker room) or maybe it’s just gesturing at steroids because of the deep voice? but her physique and obvious muscles weren’t the first thought in my head of why she would be kicked out, based on the video
My pf smith machine maxes at like 150 I think
Can you imagine being the officer that responded to that call. What is the problem? He’s breaking equipment? Harassing patrons? Stealing? I’m sorry, what? The-the water bottle? The water bottle is too big? *looses faith in humanity and walks away*
I’d literally quit my job right then and there.
Can you get fined for wasting and officers time like that?
People wonder why cops go nuts...
Well, It's still bad, but thinking about it, they probably called the cops because he wasn't leaving after they told him to, which does makes sense, but still sucks; also what they consider as refusing to leave is probably just him asking why not at the desk, and then they were like, how dare you stand here and ask questions after we asked you to leave, *calls cops.

So, if seeing a bunch of perfectly toned people makes you self conscious, that's fair. I get that. But if we're talking about gym people judging you? Legit planet fitness is is the only place I've seen this. It's full of awful people. Every other decent gym is full of people who are genuinely trying to better themselves, and want to help you better yourself.
@@katc2040 Coming from someone who's never been straight-sized, being fat or any other non-standard body size shouldn't have to make people feel like they're forced/restricted to only specific gyms. Regardless of body size, you shouldn't have to be judged or bullied in a GYM of all places, since people usually go there to get healthier in the first place.*
(*Just to clarify, weight≠health, obviously.

Telling me there are videos proving It doesn’t mean anything. Did you look at videos explaining why it’s unhealthy? It’s complete bias. I’ve watched videos trying to explain why and there full of logical leaps and fallacies.

It could be the fact that I went to a different planet fitness, but the guy that worked there did look fit.
As a personal trainer I have worked at many gyms. ALL gyms hire questionable people. You cannot just put that solely on PF. I can name 12 different brand and boutique gyms that hire overweight people
As someone with many years experience working in restaurants, nobody except high end michelin star chefs care about your food lmao
“We’re not a gym” pretty much says that they only sell you the illusion that you’re doing something
As a big guy that recently started going to a real gym, the only "interactions" I have with the other people are generally supportive.
I'd never go to Planet Fitness for 2 reasons
1. I actually want to get fit
2. I have a BIG water bottle
Strongman gyms are one of the most chill places ever, metal music blasting on full volume notwhitstanding
2. I like being healthy and hydrated
Nonsense. I see it all at PF...fit hydrated people everywhere.
Honestly, it really just depends on your location. Most towns and areas PFs will be pretty chill and operate like any normal gym. I've noticed that it's usually the ones in bigger cities where you get the jugdement or the people sitting and eating or on their phones rather than actually working out.
If the lunk alarm went off at planet fitness while I was on the elliptical I would have a panic attack
"Staggering, I know" I can't explain just how far into space that sent me
I think I have one of the very very few planet fitnesses where it’s extremely clean, the workers are supportive and nice, and the gym goers are like little angels. Been going there for a little over a year and anytime I go to another planet fitness I cry a lil
They probably have a really good manager at yours, or something.

same! i started going over the summer, and the days i couldnt go but my mom went the employees would ask where i was and if im doing ok. i also never ever heard the lunk alarm
Lucky you! I think a lot of the staff at my pf wish I wouldn't even show up. The majority are unfriendly and cold. No greeting, no smiles, no nothing but stoney silence. The few who are nice get punished and then don't make that mistake again.
Love how they present the most unrealistic events in their advertisements, a gym which is also a nightclub.
It's called exaggerating to make a point
Not saying it's not a stupid point
“We’re not a gym, we’re planet fitness” is actually incredibly accurate
Strangely enough, my experience at the Planet Fitness I go to has been really great! I'm an ultra skinny guy trying to bulk up, and I've been going with friends. We've been having a good time, and the employees are super nice! The "gymbros" are pretty chill as well, and never get in trouble/kicked out. I think it ultimately depends on what PF you're at, and what the environment is like.
Mine too
Yeah I agree, the PF I went to sometimes had a grunting lifter echoing the halls.
Fact.
Yup. No issues at my PF either. Shrug.
You understand that this situation doesn't apply to you, right? You're just proving the point he is making.
