Most people know Sierra is a master of the mandolin but that bass player takes it to another level. I'll call this Bluegrass jazz. Incredible musicianship.
Interesting ensemble....I can honestly say for sure and certain that I've never seen an alto sax, mandolin, and string bass play together - but it works! :)
First time I've ever seen and heard a sax in bluegrass. He killed it ! Great job to All you fine musicians ! Sierra I wish I could hangout with you 24/7 ! Your So Gifted !
Maybe some don't know. This is a Bill Monroe (pronounced Bluegrass) song. Sierra has a great interpretation of it, and she teamed up with the right people to deliver it to our ears! Ethan and Eddie, y'all are just excellent!!!
With the sax playing the refrain at 2.22 ish they reminded me of Back Door. Amazing work. Sierra Hull is the only contemporary artist in any genre that I trust with my adoration
I thought I had seen all the YT videos of Sierra playing Old Dangerfield but this one just popped up this evening. Every different combination of instruments brings out something in this song. Now I'm not sure which is my favorite. Just have to keep listening to them all I guess.
So she’s playing this in B, which for the alto sax player is a ridiculously hard key to play in (for him it’s G# major I think....). Mad props to him for nailing this!!
Saw this trio in Hamilton Ohio late November 2017 and it was an awesome concert! Sierra's music is becoming sooooo mature and , just great! What a talent.
Oh gosh. Well I for one appreciate that you pushed through it. My kids are both playing sax in HS (one alto, one bari) so I love that I can show them it's not just for Jazz and Marching Band!
I found the info on Sierra's site: "In advance of her NYC concert, Sierra stopped by the Paste Studio in Manhattan for a Q& A + Live performance. She was joined by Ethan Jodziewicz & Eddie Barbash."
Beautiful music from this trio! Figures it would take a young woman to turn me on to jazz music. Lol. I love listening to this kind of stuff now. This jam was just awesome 👏!!!
I had to pause for a few minutes............. this just seems like some older "timey-wimey" style musical thing, but I really liked the combo. No disrespect to Sierra, but the major player in this is the cello player, OMG that dude killed it!! Not that the other players were crap, but damn................ I mean really, they were all good but geez............ that bass......
Most don’t think You’re silly. Most think You’re a misogynist that needs to work on himself so you can get over your little hangup and join the rest of us in admiring the musicianship of this top shelf musician without patronizing BS getting in your way.
Props to the sax player for his amazing adaptation to the wet chuck of the mandolin. Incredible

never thought this combination would sound this great its nice
This woman is just outrageously gifted.
She's more than that!
Cute, too.
IMO the star of this video is the bass player.
And just keeps getting better and better!
Bill Monroe, the father of Bluegrass and the author of this tune a fair number of years back, would be so proud! Bravo and a superb job by all.
I dont know how many times I've watched this now, but it just gets better and better
What incredible musicianship! (with Ethan Jodziewicz on bass and Eddie Barbash on sax)
Is that really Ethan Jodziewicz? Doesn’t look or move like him. Doesn’t look like his instrument, either.
OMG. Gorgeous. Goose bumps. Wonder what Monroe would say! Bet he'd love it.
Interesting ensemble....I can honestly say for sure and certain that I've never seen an alto sax, mandolin, and string bass play together - but it works! :)
be different i say
Octave mandolin at that!
Doesn't work for me the muted sax part i could live without.

Eddie is out of this world.

This is awesome. The sax is so great on this. And Sierra, of course, kills it as always!
So much fun watching the changing arrangements and mix of musicians she has brought to this wonderful tune over the past 7 years.
I'm really glad she was born...she's a gift to us
Amen . . . . . and again . . . . . Amen. - RH, age 70, Czech Rep
i should say cr.edit to the recording crew allowing the acoustic sound to flow through, great work all i feel like i am in the room with them
That is one dangerous bass player - excellent bow-work!

That is AMAZING!! I am in awe! Please come to Europe! (preferably London or Berlin!)
Jesus! More power to her! Wow!
Really love it 👍

Are you sure. She’s playing a Mandola with a capo on second fret. Isn’t this more like in D?
@@jjmuni it’s an octave mandolin. Same tuning as a regular mando just down an octave
If I had to fight these three to the death, I'd be very tempted to let them win. Bravo!!!
that sax playing is lit asf
Incredible talent!
Awesome! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Railroad Earth covers this tune and jams it out really well.
I'm re-entering music and this is a new fold great schooling thanks and well done

If this is not the leading edge of today's acoustic music somebody needs to enlighten me
Simply amazing!
Fine combination of instruments, and players...
Masterful.
That is the nicest sounding mando. I guess Im taken with the mid-range sound.
What new manner of madness is this!?
This is so gooood
Killer!
Wow! For a second there I had a flashback to an amazing Brit band from around '71 called Back Door. Hahahhahahahahaha........happy days
super good!
Was feeling very sick when we taped this and later found out that I had mono 😂
What is mono?

My god dude you were awesome ... From another sax player.
Great stuff
Bluegrass sax.Who'da thought. Especially interesting backup. Thanks. guys.
Feel like this should be my life's theme tune 😁
СуперКласс!!!
That's one giant mando!!
Kyle F it's an instrument called an octave mandolin. Tuned lower than a standard (size) mandolin.
That's what I wanted to say!
David McIntosh Octave mando is the tenor mando while normal mandolins as in bluegrass band are the alto mandos.
Octave Mando ftw!
? those are paired strings not octaves. it's a mandocello
I'm inclined to call this chitlins and greens on a bagel.
S_U_P_E_R !!! All three!
Wonderful performance. It would be nice to credit the other two musicians, though.
I found the info on Sierra's site: "In advance of her NYC concert, Sierra stopped by the Paste Studio in Manhattan for a Q& A + Live performance. She was joined by Ethan Jodziewicz & Eddie Barbash."
That would be:
Ethan Jodziewicz - bass
Eddie Barbash - sax
all those solos were fucking N A S T Y
สุดยอด

Just the way Monroe intended it, he just didn’t know it.😂

Whats up with the way oversized mandolin looking instrument? A mando-guitar?
It's an Octave Mandolin. Tuned same as Mandolin, just an Octave down

That's the wrong way to hold a violin.
Nope. Just noooo
she needs to wear a dress i know most think i am silly for saying so but i like dresses on women and pants on men a way of saying we are different
I don't disagree, but that's the only thing you took away from this video?

Perhaps the stupidest thing I have read recently.
There always has to be at least one asshole pearl-clutching dinosaur commenting on these videos.
Respect people. Respect their choices, brother. Yes . . . . . . we are different.
