    Defense Secretary Ash Carter, as he comes into what could be his last year overseeing the most powerful military on earth, has begun talking about something surprising: a return to great power competition. During a recent interview at the Pentagon, we asked Carter how he thought about navigating this new world, and he returned over and over to the same answer: deterrence.
    But as the norms and tools of warfare are changing, how well does deterrence still work? Can this Cold War-era idea still keep the peace in a new era? Here's why this challenge has such high stakes for the world - and what Carter had to say about it.

    I'm sure deterrence goes some way to explaining the relative global peace since the great wars (relative being the key word here), but I think it is also important to consider how globalisation reduces the likelihood of wars (Who wants to bomb their trade partners right?). Maintaining a huge nuclear arsenal will become increasingly questionable as nations become more interdependent.

      But the fact is that the US started the war in korea, the US started the war in vietnam, the US invaded iraq; the first time there was no need for it and neither was the second time. The US bombed serbia for no reason.

    Ash makes it sound the US is not fallable and has the moral high ground on the international stage. This is far from the truth. The US needs to understand that the world is shifting towards a multipolar world and that its acts of overt (Iraq,etc.) or covert (Ukraine,etc.) aggression will not be a constructive way to defend its national interests. Lets negotiate, exchange and trade!

  • @Strangelove657
    @Strangelove657 8 років тому

    I am strongly against nuclear weapons, but I suppose Carter does have a point when he says there is no better alternative at least an effective one. However,this makes me wonder if eventually deterrence techniques could simply just replace nukes for something with greater destructive force, putting us back at an arms race with potential enemies, or perhaps invent ways of an equivalent retaliation in the emerging fields of war like cyberspace. Its almost a "jenga" situation, if you will humor me, as the US could possible have the whole idea of deterrence topple over on them if they simply just continue to add on top of it. In essence I believe that deterrence is critically flawed in this aspect of a constant challenge of maintaining adequate strength to keep the "status quo" as mentioned in the video, and that eventually the "free world" will have to one day find a safer strategy in defending its borders.

    People go on and on about the perils or nuclear weapons. But think about this, ever since nuclear weapons were invented, the world has not fought a major war. It hasn't done this horrible thing it has been doing for thousands of years before on a ridiculously regular basis. This is the longest period of peace time without major wars since the dawn of mankind.

Get your head out of your ass and sniff around, maybe you'll notice the world is shitty and not the meadow of roses you picture. Childish thoughts like yours should not enter positions of power.

    What if we're the only intelligent life that we will ever encounter? How fucked up will that be, if we end up being the pinnacle

    • @cortster12
      @cortster12 8 років тому

      +WeeWeeJumbo Just give it a few hundred million years, and as long as we survived that long to spread to millions or billions of star systems, then we would no doubt evolve into millions, most likely many, many, more, of new species. In short, we will be the reason a 'Star Wars' level of diversity exists in the galaxy.
      Or give it a few billion years, and maybe the gut bacteria from some space tourist eventually gives rise to an entirely new ecosystem of life. And maybe even intelligent life. That would be the closest thing to an alien, besides real aliens, to exist.
      Wouldn't this be an interesting universe? Where every mammal, reptile, bird, bug, microbe, ect, have the chance to one day evolve into something with intelligence? They would look nothing like their ancestors, but among billions of star systems the odds go from unlikely to almost impossible not to happen.

      We don't need to encounter intelligent life for it exist though. It's mathematically certain that other intelligent life exists

    • @cortster12
      @cortster12 8 років тому

      Liam Prendergast Wrong. We only have one example of life, and we don't even know the exact process of abiogenesis of this very specific kind to arise. So estimates are all over the place.
      It's very plausible simple life exists somewhere else, but it's far from certain. Heck, that's not even taking into account multi-cellular life. There are literally zero ways to know if multi-cellular life was inevitable or not. From looking at our planet, it seemed to have taken billions of years for even one single cell to become multi-cellular.
      And then you have sapient life, which is a whole other ballgame. So no, it is not even close to a mathematical certainty. Simple life, yes, but intelligent life? No.

    Very interest. Now, to compare with Trump. Trump has said he doesn't want people to know what he's thinking. That means increasing uncertainty for the adversary. This can either act as a higher deterrence, or lower it by providing the opportunity for under-estimation. Further, lack of military-military communication provides the opportunity for a misunderstanding or disagreement on "proportionality". This means higher chance of escalation, in any retaliation (think Syria cruise-missile strike).
    These are very different styles, and each have their pros and cons. Akin to gambling, I would say Trump's is more volatile but can have bigger payoffs, while Obama's is more stable but misses opportunities to project/increase American power.
    In fact, the Strategic Patience of Obama assumed that the US already had enough power (relative to others) and thus could afford such transparency, patience. Trump obviously feels this strategy lost the US power in which he intends to regain.

    Deterrence is all about clear communication. In case of cyberattack, we will respond! That needs to be perfectly clear. I have no idea what, where or how severe the response will be, but exist it will! Have no doubt, if you attack american interests, America will do something somewhere to someone at some point in time. Clear communication is critical.
