Great: an informative, simple, east to digest history of Cuba. I visited in 2002. I'm glad to see that the US is finally starting to open up after decades of a needless embargo against a country that poses no threat.
Also the reason why Castro got power was because they killed off two of the other revolutionists at the time that were also trying to overthrow batista and Castro was the only one left. Even though Castro gained more popularity with the people than the other two men who were fighting the same cause as him, he was the only one who they didn't kill since he was in the mountains with Che
No, this channel DEFINITELY has a bias. I'm certainly not saying that they're bad; as a matter of fact, I love their videos. And MOST of them aren't biased... except for the political ones like this. This one is discussing foreign policy of the U.S, and it is VERY left-leaning in how they present the facts. By the end of the video, they try to say that lifting the embargo is the best thing for both Cuba and the U.S, and that's the liberal/Democratic argument. Most conservatives believe that we need to keep the embargo in place because if we open up relations with Cuba again, the people of Cuba aren't going to get the money: the Cuban gov't is (because hello, communism). Also, I didn't like that they didn't discuss the human rights violations of the Cuban people, the way the government controls every aspect of the Cuban people's lives, and how they can legally only earn about 40 U.S. dollars a month.
Don't Even Bother I never disparaged the people of Cuba I think they are wonderful they do have all those things you said but that doesn't change the fact that the people live in poverty I want that to change I want a free independent Cuba that doesn't oppress its people or need support from evil benafactors maybe I was a bit zealous in my attack in Cuba but a large part of the suffering of my family was helped by Fidel Castro and his funding of the Sandanistas in Nicaragua Im sorry if I came off as to harsh I just want people to know that Cuba is in a bad place economically so people need help and their government needs to go

The Philippines share a common history with Cuba on how they fought against the colonial power of the Spanish Empire during the last part of the 19th century. In 1898, with the help of the Americans during the Spanish-American war, the Philippines gained its "independence" albeit with the auspices of the Americans. Dealing with "new colonialism" and eventually gaining self-governance are the struggles that the Philippines and Cuba share. It's just interesting to note the paths that different ideologies made for their respective destinies.
Vox I think you've missed some critical points of nuance with this video. For one, Castro's communist leanings were unclear to US Policy Makers until he declared himself a communist in 1961, 4 years after the revolution. Castro's unclear association with Communism, and the fact that Cuban democratic unions and political parties initially cooperated with Castro's own M26 movement to overthrow Batista represent major points of contention in Cuban. Cuban-American, and Academic Latin American Studies scholarship.
+John Saunders No, Castro and his guerilla group looted many of the weapons found in the many fortifications placed around the country, then he gather national support by using radio rebelde (rebel) so a lot of people joined the 26th of July Movement. Once the Soviets knew of his revolution, they started sending weapons and aid to help the guerrilleros.
One year later. Read once that he was a Nationalist. The Communist was his brother. Seeing that the US wanted nothing to do with him he finally went along with his brothers idea to get Soviet help. Once the Soviets propped him up he became a Communist.

I was born and raised in Cuba came during the Mariel boatlifts. I can tell you that would take a separate video. All I can tell you is the Castro regime only brought suffering poverty and oppression to my people.
Beautiful video. You should start a series of videos mainly examining US relationship with countries no one though we had involvement with. Countries such as Philippines, Haiti, Brazil, Middle Eastern countries like UAE, etc. Great watch though, and very informative.
I'm pretty sure USA's involvement with the Arab states is household knowledge by now, as well as its involvement with the Philippines during WW2 and beyond. A oneshot about the Philippine American war would be nice though, most Americans I've met only really know about them and >us ca. WW2.
The worst is when us historians called it the Cuban missile crisis. More like the Russian missile crisis. Cuba does not have the technology to make a nuclear weapon.

@@QWERTY-gp8fd They only terrorize their own people with beatings and imprisonment if they dare to speak up.
@@jamesbon1 they dont terrorize. they purge their own ppl
@@QWERTY-gp8fd No. In fact, there is an scare tactic called "actos de repudio" where a mob goes to your house, terrorizes you, pulls you out, beats you up, etc... And that's just 1 example.
I like learning about history when I don't have to take a test on it
Great: an informative, simple, east to digest history of Cuba. I visited in 2002. I'm glad to see that the US is finally starting to open up after decades of a needless embargo against a country that poses no threat.
Didnt castro empty prisons and hospitals when he "opened" the border
guys, seriously. usually love your vids, but this one goes above and beyond. great edit, story, graphics, execution... loved it!
Fantastic work on the animations 10/10
Wow, this video was created before Trump was president. Sad what difference a year can make.
Miku Hatsune trump gang
Trump's policy was great, you don't negotiate with tyrants. I'm Cuban btw
Very well produced video, I definitely learned something new today.
These soundtracks always soothing
such an amazing video. great editing, not bias
Isaac Castro that's why I like it so much. great visuals and no biased opinion
Cuba is a beautiful country with a rich culture and heritage, you Americans should be more sad that you couldn't visit then you are!
Benjamin Solis Although in your defense, a huge part of what made Cuba beautiful WAS the lack of Americans like yourself... So much for that...
Don't Even Bother I never disparaged the people of Cuba I think they are wonderful they do have all those things you said but that doesn't change the fact that the people live in poverty I want that to change I want a free independent Cuba that doesn't oppress its people or need support from evil benafactors maybe I was a bit zealous in my attack in Cuba but a large part of the suffering of my family was helped by Fidel Castro and his funding of the Sandanistas in Nicaragua Im sorry if I came off as to harsh I just want people to know that Cuba is in a bad place economically so people need help and their government needs to go
Benjamin Solis You're absolutely right. It is an economically crippled nation, however we can all hope for a brighter tomorrow for Cuba, and indeed the rest of the world as well.
:)
Don't Even Bother I hurled insults to and I totally understand your sentiments about friendly people its cool us Americans get a bad wrap I mean it's a big country with lots of people so yea I understand when people disparage us because usually the loudest of us are the one's that gain the most attention
Benjamin Solis I think it's just fun as a Canadian to insult you guys as much as we can. Our culture is basically based around how Not-American we can be.
In all honesty you're still our big brother to the south, and we like it that way...
Were better at hockey tho :D
The Philippines share a common history with Cuba on how they fought against the colonial power of the Spanish Empire during the last part of the 19th century. In 1898, with the help of the Americans during the Spanish-American war, the Philippines gained its "independence" albeit with the auspices of the Americans. Dealing with "new colonialism" and eventually gaining self-governance are the struggles that the Philippines and Cuba share. It's just interesting to note the paths that different ideologies made for their respective destinies.
i'd like to ask how Vox was able to make videos like this or the software they used. It looks so sophisticated and I really like it!
Castro isn’t a dictator, Castro is a normal leader, that the Cuban people wanted to see remained in power for the extent that he was.
This video is well edited and smoothly put together. Informative and easy to watch
This video was beautifully made. This may actually be the best editing and designing I've ever seen on an informative video

The guy has a very beautiful voice.
Calm but very soothing
+subhabrata pramanick haha..the type of voice I want to fall asleep to
My Spanish teacher is Cuban and now I know why there was so much tension and danger in her leaving Cuba (I believe in the 1970s-80s)
Well done.
Your editor should have a high salary.
Fun Fact: This Video was released on Apr 12, 2016
Castro passed away on Nov 25, 2016
At some Point Castro might have saw this video
Vox I think you've missed some critical points of nuance with this video. For one, Castro's communist leanings were unclear to US Policy Makers until he declared himself a communist in 1961, 4 years after the revolution. Castro's unclear association with Communism, and the fact that Cuban democratic unions and political parties initially cooperated with Castro's own M26 movement to overthrow Batista represent major points of contention in Cuban. Cuban-American, and Academic Latin American Studies scholarship.
Good point also wasn't it the U.S. who armed Castro for the revolution?
+John Saunders No, Castro and his guerilla group looted many of the weapons found in the many fortifications placed around the country, then he gather national support by using radio rebelde (rebel) so a lot of people joined the 26th of July Movement. Once the Soviets knew of his revolution, they started sending weapons and aid to help the guerrilleros.
One year later. Read once that he was a Nationalist. The Communist was his brother. Seeing that the US wanted nothing to do with him he finally went along with his brothers idea to get Soviet help. Once the Soviets propped him up he became a Communist.

Love these videos, keep it up!
This video needs an update. I’m interested to know how those relations have evolved since D.Trump and Diaz-Canel. I know things aren’t going well, I would just like to know how.
Great video. I would have appreciated an explanation of the composition (politics, race, class) of the people who left Cuba and migrated to Florida in the 80s. That's important to the history.
I was born and raised in Cuba came during the Mariel boatlifts. I can tell you that would take a separate video. All I can tell you is the Castro regime only brought suffering poverty and oppression to my people.
Holy shit this one was good! The music and the editing were on point!
this video already feels like history
As a person who lived in GITMO 2011-2013 this was very nicely done!
WW2.
Everyone knows how US and other European Nations terrorized Middle East
In hindsight, this was really optimistic.
The song Havana has played a crucial role in spreading awareness and open mindedness so props to Camila Cabello
no it didnt lol
It did indeed. Speaking As someone who's not from the American continent (both south and north)
4:00 Oh so this is what was happening at the beginning of Scarface
I just got on the boat after about 7 hrs in Cuba, loved it
I think it's kind of a beautiful example of how politics CAN work...lovely piece btw. (Y)
I grew up in Miami, and even I learned something here.
The worst is when us historians called it the Cuban missile crisis. More like the Russian missile crisis. Cuba does not have the technology to make a nuclear weapon.
Kennedy was a failure with the bay of pigs and the Russian missile crisis plus he was terrible with the civil rights movement in America. A rich white guy did not care about black peoples struggles.
Yea we need an update
i dont think the trade blockade was ever lifted
So sad to watch this video 6 years later and to see that things didn't improve neither went too well.
i learn alot of history from VOX, Thanks ! 😊
Northern US: Don't invade Cuba! That's Imperialism!

I love Cuba from Macedonia, I dont even know why I just love Cuba the geography the upstanding, the Leaders, Cuba is a pure dope country, I really want to go there. 🇲🇰❤️🇨🇺
I don't know why, but watching your videos is very soul-satisfying experience :).
Imperialism is bad period. But if Cuba became a US state, millions of people wouldn't be killed by Castro, we can all agree on that.
No
@@AvanRoyOfficial Why not? It would probably become another Hawaii
The reason why cuba became socialist in the first place was becase US bourgeoisie forced cubans to work on fields (like the sugar farms discussed in this video) for a few cents a month and tried to make cuba a US state.
3:49 yeah, because the United States was placing nuclear weapons in Türkiye 🇹🇷
