Invading China and Russia would be nearly impossible without allied support and although we do have a much larger military, we would be on the defensive most of the war which would cause destruction and economic downfall. Excluding nukes a war between both at the same time would be a decisive stale mate. If we were to fight 1 at a time with allied support I think it would then be very likely to be a victory.

The main reason: U.S. is protected by two massive oceans on either side + frozen wilderness to the north and inhospitable desert to the south. It's a fortress. Any rival powers (Mexico, Spain, UK) were quickly weakened in the region, leaving the U.S. free to expand unopposed. Then the U.S. is in the richest agricultural land in the world, with some of the most navigable waterways and natural harbours, plus abundant quantities of literally every single resource you could need, and a massive population. And all of this was free for the U.S. to develop as no one else posed a threat. It was pretty much the ultimate hand that could be played. Additionally, the U.S. was one of the first countries to embrace democratic and liberal ideas that allowed prosperous development as opposed to the feudal European kingdoms of past.

MooMilkMilk I have heard this argument before and I understand it. BUT, you had back to back giant global wars which basically were able to happen because of the industrial revolution. So to the point, had the US not taken the role we did at the time, there is no reason to think that there would not have been a WW3, 4, and who knows. By strangling the only real opposition at the time by basically outspending them, the US was able to position itself as the world police officer. Part of it was geographical: we control a massive amount of land rich in a variety of resources, and is flanked by the two biggest bodies of water on earth (this is also what made GB as powerful as it was before we came along, just on a much smaller scale) We also basically paid for both world wars, to be paid back with interest, and managed to install the USD as the default currency for all international commerce by creating the petrodollar system

Any rival powers (Mexico, Spain, UK) were quickly weakened in the region, leaving the U.S. free to expand unopposed. MooMilkMilk I have heard this argument before and I understand it. BUT, you had back to back giant global wars which basically were able to happen because of the industrial revolution. So to the point, had the US not taken the role we did at the time, there is no reason to think that there would not have been a WW3, 4, and who knows. By strangling the only real opposition at the time by basically outspending them, the US was able to position itself as the world police officer. Now, many will and can argue the United States intentions, but I have always felt that the opinion of the American people in my lifetime has been that to be a just nation and look out for other nations as well as our own interests. Part of it was geographical: we control a massive amount of land rich in a variety of resources, and is flanked by the two biggest bodies of water on earth (this is also what made GB as powerful as it was before we came along, just on a much smaller scale)
We also basically paid for both world wars, to be paid back with interest, and managed to install the USD as the default currency for all international commerce by creating the petrodollar system

They also had a resources of an entire continent at their disposal as well.
And all the major wars happened far away on other lands. So unlike other countries, their infrastructure and by extension their economy, was not decimated because the war was just not taking place in the USA.

First User They were considered a regional superpower because that's all they were. They only have/had influence over "satellite states" of small countries directly surrounding Russia. Even their military is based upon being regional. Lot's of tanks and AA ground based, whereas US has a large navy and air force, capable of projecting massive military presence anywhere on the globe.
A superpower is more than just being powerful though, it's cultural influence/military prowess, technological advancements. US was beating Russia in every category.
America just like Rome started off as a weak country from a backwater region of the world and became the most powerful country in the world.

That is the reason why English dominated the US in the first place because the newly independent US at the time was heavily English speaking from Britain and Ireland. Even though there are sizable German population and French was the language of business and trade hence French was the Lingua France they chose the English language because of Britain.

Not ww2, yes ww2 was important for the US but even before it the US could outproduce every other participant combined. WW1 is what drove them up to that position. Well that and the fact that they were one of the few countries with oilfields at the time.

The key point wasn't 1898. It was the failed diplomatic intervention in the War of the Pacific. No, not the Pacific War, but the war that took place between 1879 and 1884, fought and won by Chile over the alliance of Peru and Bolivia.

However, chilean power also grew, and it wasn't until the Chilean Civil War of 1891 that the US dared to threat Chile again.
With the chilean insolence solved, the new military power had to be exerted somewhere. Thus came the war against Spain, Hispanic America's motherland, the logical next step after having steped onto its best daugther republic.
