I had a 76 Celica GT lift back I bought it in 1990 for $1000 God I loved that car. It was just plain fun to drive around in for the gearshift knob I customized a cue ball it was perfect even in the hottest weather it stayed cool it was a perfect comfortable grip for shifting I installed a sunroof a rear air spoiler and a front hood scoop the same kind is on the 69 mustang Shelby, because yes this car is called the “mini mustang“ and they are absolutely right and I applaud Toyota for making this car. I see some of them around occasionally the ones I hate do not have the rear window louvers those louvers totally complement the overall look of the car and mine were made of metal and when it was Cold and icy the frost and ice formed on the louvers and not on the window an unexpected bonus. My car looked bad ass I got many many compliments on it and engine wise it was so easy to work on, that clamshell hood was a stroke of genius. you flipped it up and BAM 💥 everything was right there at your fingertips. and then I got married (no regrets, we’re still married) and had a family she already had kids they ranged in age from 6 to 12, there were 4 of them, so I definitely needed a bigger car I sold it to a nice lady, Home had the rear spoiler stolen within three days and drove it into the ground within three months I should’ve gotten it back from her but I didn’t, and that my friends was the biggest mistake of my life car-wise. I should’ve kept it considering how these have exploded in value. SIGH. There are all sorts of fantastic kits that you can get for these cars out there Yep there are those choices you make in life that later on with 2020 hindsight You realize you’re phenomenally stupid we should’ve gone to a two car family. I had a '77 Celica Liftback GT, orange with black interior, 5-speed from 1979 until 1986. I've owned and sold a lot of cars since then and the '77 Celica is the only one I wish I could have back. This car looks to be in great shape, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Great looking project. Just picked up a 77 liftback in July. A small bit of rust to take carry of first and then decisions on wheels, engine, and color.
I just got one. 67, it's orange and I plan on keeping it and restoring it. I'm already thinking of planning trips out to Japan in the future in hopes of acquiring some parts. Best of luck!
Nice car. I've owned my 76 Liftback for almost 30 years now. Mine has a lot of cosmetics to go but it's all there. I put a 302 Ford V8 and Ford 5 speed in it and it fits like a glove. Upgraded rad of course and new 2 1/2 " single exhaust. The Ford headers are reversible so you can avoid the steering box. I just needed to put a remote oil filter in the side wall. People stare at me when I drive by. Not only have they not seen anything like it but it's loud. Building for car shows not to race. Cheers - Steve From Vancouver Island Canada
@@1979gmcummmins You better put some big tires on it. Mine still has small tires and I can get 5th gear rubber no problem. I figure I'm running just over 300 hp with a small high rise and a 600 cfm carb.
Australian gal here. Always loved the Celica, I have a 1989 & a black 1998. But yours was always my favourite Celica of all time (I only just learnt this style was accused of copying the mustang 😐) anyway ..., and the perfect colour. I have not seen one in Australia for a long time, Im sure they are hidden away in garages being quite a collectors item now. Its a beautiful car (a little jealous, I got to admit!!) 😊
Have a Black one just like yours. I've owned mine since 1978 and just a fun car to drive. Mostly stock with a few mods. Looking forward to what you'll do!
Do you know of a few good places to get parts? I've been looking for a 77 Celica for a while now and found 2 decent ones in the US. They will definitely need some work but I really have no idea where to begin looking for parts for this beautiful machine. Not as easy as when I was looking for parts on my old 69 GTO. Beautiful car by the way!
I picked up my '77 Coupe earlier this year, unfortunately not in as good of condition as yours looks to be, but with a similar dream. These 1st Gen Celicas are just too cool. Will be following along!
I had a 77 Celica GT liftback, ended up selling it after it had nearly 400K miles still ran and shifted fine no A/C ( it was broken ) and keeping the car didn't make sense. and parts were getting hard to find (this was before Rock Auto, eBay, etc)
The "correct" pronounciation in Australia is CELLEECA. 😊 Dont come for me!! Its just what we do. How ever its pronounced - I love them & have two of 'em.

I had the 1977 GT lift back 5 speed and I also had the 1976 GT coupe. Wish I had these cars today

@@Bye401K It's been in my car for over 13 years and the front end hasn't sagged a bit.
I'm doing a 77 right now with a 350 5 speed. Can't wait to drive it

Cash for Clunkers decimated the the older cars, especially these little cars and the Corollas and Datsuns. Thanks Oh-Bum-ma
you pronounced Celica correctly.. not everyone does
