@@mckessa17 you mustn’t have taken very good care of it. I’m currently daily-driving my late grandpa’s ‘76 GT, which he used to drive from Toronto to Vermont in the winter to go skiing. And he was a maniac driver to boot - totalled his ‘72 Celica
jsupra I know it will be the Japanese version of the Celica Mustang. And I wish they had the Celica Liftback on Need For Speed this car will be amazing for it.
@@AAPGoku It has just dawned on me.... They missed the opportunity when they rereleased the 86 to brand it as the Celica. Small high revving engine making respectable power, but not great, which is focused on just being a great driving car.
@@Mrjohnnymoo1 Yeah its a lot closer to a first or second gen Celica than a AE86. But for many thye think of 7th gen Celicas and those don't match with the car's image
Any man that respects the Ken Meri Skyline is legit in my book. It's good he also drives such a beautiful Celica instead of letting it sit in his garage.
Lovely video ... you can hear the love a petrol head has for his special car in Benny's voice ... seems like a nice guy with really sweet car... I like this video hope it turns into a series...Thanks Carfection!
I had a ‘77 celica Gt with a trunk. 1/2 the trunk was a stock fuel tank and sat right behind the back seat. Quarter rear windows had their own cranks to roll them down. I loved that car. I still have the gear shift knob because I thought the green silver and red were unique colors for a knob.
I’m trying to draw this model of celica. Love the style. Toyota should bring this back, only a few of these cars left for sale.. I used to see them in the junk yard at south San Diego california
Love this video always wanted one of these growing up ended up with 2 x Honda Prelude 1989 hopefully one day i will finally get the mustang back :) love your passion if anything breaks i will fix it keep it alive :)
Beautiful! My first ever car was a '74 Celica ST Fastback, next up was a '77 ST Liftback and my third was a '78 GT Liftback. Performance wasn't outstanding but loved the look of them. If you met another one on the road in the UK back in the early 80's you would flash your headlights because they were rare even then. Nice to know that there's at least one still on the road back home.
I love the 1st and 7th gen as well as the GT4's. While they disappointingly made this car FWD, every generation is still a ton of fun. If I were ever to get an older car, it's the 70's Celica.
I had a 1977 model in the US, left hand drive, 20R engine. Headers and High performance Cam. painted Silver with wide Black racing stripes and Western style Wheels. it must of had 400K miles when I sold it. I couldn't keep it anymore. but it was bought by a person who worked at a classic card dealership for his kid. They were going to continue to fix it up . it Still passed state Emissions for a non catalyst car barely.
One of my all time favorite cars. Reminds me of my aunt's '76 Celica ST notchback coupe, with the five speed. Would LOVE to find one here in the states and restore it, if I can.
Had a friend who had a brown one when I was 18 and they were new. Never forgot what an incredibly beautiful car it was at the time, and even now. I had just bought a crappy Pontiac Sunbird before he got his Celica. Last American car I ever bought.
I had this exact year and model in a 5-speed when I was in high school in the mid 80s. Rust was an issue, but not much else was. The car was super reliable, relatively quick, fun to drive, and it looked good. As I remember it didn't sound as nice as the video here, but it was a great car. Mine had 110K miles on it when I bought it used, but it ran for years before a drunk driver t-boned me and destroyed the car.
Mate, good to see. I recently got hold of a car i've wanted for a while. Used 330i low mileage, and just can't stop driving it. Put about 8k on in the first 5 months and was fretting a bit about the mileage. But yeah, pointless to own a car that you can't drive and enjoy nearly everyday.
Surprisingly easy to find parts for these, with the exception of parts for the 18rgu. The transmissions and axles were off a Hi-Lux, and many of the other components were similar, especially if you have one in the U.S. I've dailied a '77 for two years now.
My first real car 1977 Toyota Celica GT lift-back my Dad help me buy for $3400.00 bucks had it for 6 years loved it traded it on a 1982 Celica had it for 6 months and bought one of my favorite Toyota's a 1985 Toyota Corolla GTS twin-cam lift-back what a sweet car .I have owned 8 Toyota's .Now own a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD OFFROAD nice ride .Toyota makes a nice vehicle nothing against domestics I have had Fords and Chevy's but they just seem to last longer .
I had one which was also my first Toyota, but when it got to the 200k mark, I got nervous and sold it to a friend. He drove it until it got to 500k, before he got bored with it. If I could have figured how to sort out the suspension to where it handled, I would have kept it. Throw thousands at it, but still no BMW. I fix my Toyota Jones now through a Tacoma, which will last forever.
I'm wondering if that's an old Liberty Walk car from back in the day..judging from the banner on the windshield. I've seen the same banner on a couple of Kato-sans old demo cars.
Love the car Benny. I have to admit I would have had no idea what kind of car it is from looking at it from the side or front. I would have recognized it as Japanese and "Datsun-like" but I'd know it wasn't a Datsun. Looking at little things in the interior and exterior I see a lot of similarities with my '76 Datsun. It sounds quite the same as well. Being that it's a Toyota I bet you only have to fix something once and then it's good for a long, long time. I've been a fan of Toyota for a long time for their super-reliability as my daily drivers. They're the ultimate utilitarian vehicle, but having a Toyota that's cool too? That's a really nice combination.
Thanks for the lovely comment! You would be right with the reliability side of it. Since I've had it over a year and a half now not one single thing has gone wrong! Touch wood! Hope your Datsun treats you in a similar fashion.
It really does. It has had a lot of gremlins and has been a long journey but done right once is done for good, as a rule in my experience. For whatever criticism of your car there might be, I think the response "yeah but it's a Toyota" would sufficiently rebut anything. ;)
I had one of these in High School, and ended up selling it. It needed too much work and I couldn't afford it at the time. Kicking my self in the rear for that.

It is a nice looking car. From the A pillar back it looks like a near perfect copy of a 1970 Mustang fastback. The front end is less a copy than a variation on that styling theme. The car is still in good condition meaning that the build quality was better than the Fords of that era.
Cory Lannon That may be why it looks so nice but the styling is still a close copy of the Mustang, except the undersized wheel arches make it look weird.
it's good to see a classic car that's getting driven and not just sitting
Anyone else agree how good-looking this car is??
It’s literally a Ford Mustang. I’m surprised Ford didn’t Sue Toyota for this.
Had one in the day, they rusted away to a pile of dust.

If Toyota should ever build a new Celica, they should use the first gen as a heavy inspiration.

Agree they definitely took some inspiration from both I reckon
yes they did.
Tommy Cruz whats even cooler is that in japan they come 100hp stock.
CELICA BERTOCCHI that's freakin adorable
Tommy, he forgot to mention that is dependant on japans fuel octane levels, even back then
My grampa had one of these in sky blue. Watching this video and hearing that engine noise brings back memories of my early childhood.
Back when Toyota's actually looked good. My favorites are the first and second-generation Celica's, especially the Liftbacks. Very nice.
Such a tasteful homage to the American muscle cars. I hope you keep her alive and keep putting the miles on.
it's not American though 😐
Do you know what "homage" means?
No American but good effort pal
It's a Japanese 4 cylinder Mustang and yes it's RWD unlike most Toyotas of today. Thank god we got this in the states so no need to important.
Import*.
My teacher had this in highschool but he crashed it lol
I am a VW lover by heart, but I really admire some of the 70's Japanese designs. This is a lovely car indeed. Enjoy it Benny!
