Well, I’m GLAD to know Queen are so well respected over there… It’s FRUSTRATING living over here in the U.S. where not everyone is as Queen-and-Freddie-obsessed as I am!😼🙀
I'm an American who has been a fan of Queen since 1974, we fans were kind of considered odd. When Freddie wrote We Are the Champions, I felt that song was not only about Queen band, but about us fans too. We original fans are old now but we love their music as much now, maybe even more, because no other band can stand against them. Freddie Mercury will live forever.
Nothing new except I am American and had no problem with the I Want To Break Free video. I thought it was hilarious and uniquely Queen. Don’t know why people say Americans didn’t get the video. Especially those of us that were army brats and lived in bases all over the world. We loved Queen then and now as we introduce them to our kids and grandchildren!
Usually the dubious theory about Live Aid is that Queen were facing a big public backlash over the Sun City gigs until their Live Aid "comeback". In fact the Sun City "controversy" was confined largely to two of the three weekly music papers.
While MTV wouldn't play "I Want To Break Free," VH1 -- the smaller version of MTV -- played it all the time and people loved it. On the backstory of Live Aid, I blame that stupid-ass Bohemian Rhapsody movie with all the BS peddled by Brian and Roger that's in it.
@Tammyd They didn't write the script but were heavily involved in the development and had approval on every aspect of the movie. And they were fine with trashing Freddie and diminishing John to a useful tool that happened to write one good song.
You are right Queen were quite big, but they were obviously not as legendary in 1980, as they are today. It does take years to establish a legendary status and the critics really hated Queen, the critics were more important in those days. I ve seen some previous NME journalist said during this time they had a policy, you HAD to hate Queen to work for NME. After they had left the NME, some have admitted that they didn't really hate Queen. lol It does take years to get past these old issues. The opposite also happens, some very popular artists become far less popular over time. Time is a good equalizer sometimes. They are wrong about Freddie's voice type he was a tenor, unfortunately the so called study they did on Freddie's voice was very badly done.

By 1984 Queen was also used to performing in stadiums. A skill many that day realized isn’t so easy.

I’ve been loving Queen since I heard their music on “Highlander”. I’ve got 3 or 4 of their CDs. My favorite song is “Invisible Man”. Great reaction!
