Hey bro, typically to get the faded/raised gelcoat that were used to be behind old decals and boot stripes typically need to be wet, sanded buffed, then polish tube, then match the rest of the gelcoat and worked out
Beautiful job. I had my boat detailed this spring and the black hull came out great, but the gentleman told me that the white topsides and interior were too far oxidized to restore. When I saw your process it made me think that I was mis-informed...as long as you don't go through the gelcoat, it can be brought back. What are your thoughts on this matter?
Yes you are correct. However, if the gel coat is too thin you can’t restore it because you might go right through it, that’s what your detailer may have been trying to tell you
wow nice work and great description of the products and their uses, Not that it really matters, but the pattern you are using i have hear it being referred to as basket weave or checker board, basically you work is similar to car paint correction, just its more aggressive but now that i have a boat i am going to use your videos as my research, thanks so much for sharing your process, regards, PS can you get anything from clay barring a boat? Hey there! Meguires oxidation removal is terrible for removing oxidation. It is no where near Ardex 600. Ardex will work way better. I’m not a fan of Meguires anything
@@DrakesDetailing maybe then 3M Perfect It gelcoat heavy cut compound? Basically only thing same in Europe what is in your videos is Menzerna because it's German made 😀
Menzera doesn’t have a super heavy cut like Ardex that I have found. Menzerna did just come out with a marine line, I haven’t tried it yet. But maybe try there Heavy cutting marine compound
@@DrakesDetailing I think the sanding as I’ve never done and and afraid I may scratch it. The other part looks easy. It’s a Mastercraft X7 I have that needs to be done. It’s very oxidated
Looks great as always! How often do you think you can work on the gelcoat with the Menzerna 400 without removing too much gelcoat at some point !? Thank you! Greetings from Germany, Berlin.
Menzerna 400 is more of a polish on gel coat boats! You can use it many times without any issues! Also, you can use menzerna 2500 for lighter polishing
Alright. i am all in. I bought rotary polisher and every product you recommended. I am trying to turn my 1998 Sailfish back to a showroom shine. You did not mention much about the rub rail. My white vinyl rub rail has some scuff marks and some yellowing. any suggestions?
@@DrakesDetailing okay. worked like a charm. one step you did not mention. is taking lots of motrin after each day! After 3 days of this my boat looks awesome but my body is wrecked! This is hard work! Thank you for all your help. Love the videos.
I have a 19 foot ski boat just needs exterior of boat fiberglass done I figured one full day. Can a first timer pull this off without ruining the gelcoat?
Fabulously detailed videos! Learned so much. I have a boat I am working on that has a coupe top that is all chalk, no shine at all. Wet sand? Compound? I am going to check out every video you put out. Keep busting’ it!
Hey Drake, great video as always. Quick question... I pulled the decals off of the side of my 2008 Chaparral and of course you can see the fade where the decals were. Will the Mirka Abralon 1000 have a enough cut to get the fade out?
I have 15mm Throw DA, a 8mm Throw DA, and mini DA. Will those be enough to get rid of marring from Wetsanding with the right pad? I need to wed sand our haul in places for the first time, and pretty scared of screwing it up.
I personally would not use a da to try to remove sanding marks, It can be done but it will take about double the time and skill. If you don’t want to buy an expensive rotary, go get a cheaper one from harbor freight for like $60 that will do the job just fine. You’ll need a wool pad as well.
I'd like to see how to properly do an aluminum boat. We just got a used one and some point in its life it looks like someone either tried to buff it or maybe steel wool it and left swirl marks. Just curious if you can do anything for that and what a good sealant or whatnot would be.
Great video thanks for sharing! I have the same exact buffer/polisher. Mine is a 6 inch but yours looks bigger than that. Are you using oversized pads our is the camera just making them look bigger? Thanks Friend!!.. I see now that you are using bigger pads at times. Thanks again!!..
Hey Tyler! The buff-n-shine blue wool pad is actually the same as the white wool pad. I have it here on my website! 👉www.detailusupply.com/products/8-x-1-25-buff-and-shine-single-side-heavy-cut-wool-pad
Hey Drake, one extra question.... Do you wash the boat before doing all the steps? just to get rid of all the waterline marks, rust marks and dust on the boat? thanks , again great videos, Alex from Italy
Great Videos... I was wondering what do you use on the underside of the boat? I notice that you only sanded the sides to the waterline. Do you recommend not sanding the Hull? Thks
I only wish I had the skills to get my recently purchased 1985 Tiara Pursuit looking that good. I'm dealing with good gel coat under old stickers and heavy oxidation on the rest. I'd be happy if it looked half as good as this boat did when you started. I have picked a few techniques though, so it should help. Thanks
Love all your videos! I have a boat that needs to be sanded and brought back to life. I have a DA(harbor freight) but I do not have a rotary. Is it possible to get the high shine without running a rotary on it?
Hi Tony! Yes you will need a rotary for the heavy compounding and polishing steps. In this case, the only thing the DA will be used for is the wet sanding and applying the wax/sealant at the end
Best boat detailing videos on the Internet!

Hey there! Meguires oxidation removal is terrible for removing oxidation. It is no where near Ardex 600. Ardex will work way better. I’m not a fan of Meguires anything
@@DrakesDetailing maybe then 3M Perfect It gelcoat heavy cut compound? Basically only thing same in Europe what is in your videos is Menzerna because it's German made 😀
Fantastic work, really impressive!
Is there a product in the Menzerna line you can use instead of the Ardex? Seems we don't have Ardex in Scandinavia
Menzera doesn’t have a super heavy cut like Ardex that I have found.
Menzerna did just come out with a marine line, I haven’t tried it yet. But maybe try there Heavy cutting marine compound
Thank you for your reply, i'll check it out! Really loving your vids here in the north. Thank for your dedication👍🏻
I need to do my boat this spring. I'm a bit nervous as I have never done this before.
Is it the sanding or compounding that scares you the most?
@@DrakesDetailing I think the sanding as I’ve never done and and afraid I may scratch it. The other part looks easy. It’s a Mastercraft X7 I have that needs to be done. It’s very oxidated
Excellent 👍
😎😎
Amazing work, ❤️ the music too!
Hello Drake, thanks for the reply. Greetings Stefan✌
You’re welcome!
Alright. i am all in. I bought rotary polisher and every product you recommended. I am trying to turn my 1998 Sailfish back to a showroom shine. You did not mention much about the rub rail. My white vinyl rub rail has some scuff marks and some yellowing. any suggestions?
Use acetone on a white rag. It will come right out
@@DrakesDetailing okay. worked like a charm. one step you did not mention. is taking lots of motrin after each day! After 3 days of this my boat looks awesome but my body is wrecked! This is hard work! Thank you for all your help. Love the videos.
Haha that’s funny! Boat Detailing is no joke on your body!
How do you decide to go with a wet sand over a heavy cut compound as the first step? It that a personal preference?
When it comes to oxidation, I typically always like to wet sand first. I feel you get a much better and even cut when removing oxidation
for the dawn wash after power lock can you use Water/rubbing alcohol solution as an alternative?
Yes
Nice vid congrats on getting1k
Thanks bro!!
What do you do about the decals do you skip over or do you go over them to?
Go around them
Hi thank you for everything. After applying power lock can I put wax to protect more the hull
Yes, just wait 3 hours to let power lock cure before topping it with wax
@@DrakesDetailing thank you. really help me alot
Awesome! Let me know if you have more questions
@@DrakesDetailing ok thank you
I have a 19 foot ski boat just needs exterior of boat fiberglass done I figured one full day. Can a first timer pull this off without ruining the gelcoat?
Absolutely! It won’t go too hard into the gelcoat.
Good job on showing the steps. Do you post the products you use? Will you?
They are in the description section
just watched all your videos. loved them all! could you do a video about detailing a bilge or a cabin area?
Thank you for watching! When I get the job I’ll film it
Fabulously detailed videos!
Hey! It depends, sometimes the makita will be enough if it’s real light fading, must most of the time you will need to wet send those areas
@@DrakesDetailing thanks for the reply. What do you like to ise for wet sanding in this type of case?
love your videos do you travel to other parts of florida id love to have you do my 2005 sea chaser
boat in Tampa
Good stuff brother
Can I use a Mirka roto-orbital sander for wet sanding? What tool do you use?
Hey bro, I personally like the maxxshin M8S DA Polisher to sand with
I really appreciate the video, what brand is the sander?
That’s a griots garage DA polisher
Can you dm me a photo of it on Instagram?? Drakes.detailing
Amazing job
Insane the amount of work bro...hope he paid well 👍
Great video thanks for sharing! I have the same exact buffer/polisher. Mine is a 6 inch but yours looks bigger than that. Are you using oversized pads our is the camera just making them look bigger? Thanks Friend!!.. I see now that you are using bigger pads at times. Thanks again!!..
Where do you get the blue wool pad from ? It’s goes to the adaptor piece on your bio links
Hey Tyler! The buff-n-shine blue wool pad is actually the same as the white wool pad. I have it here on my website! 👉www.detailusupply.com/products/8-x-1-25-buff-and-shine-single-side-heavy-cut-wool-pad
Absolutely perfect 👍
Thanks bro!!!❤️
Are you using a rotary on the Power Lock +?
No, to apply powerlock I’m using a dual action polisher.
Hey Drake, one extra question.... Do you wash the boat before doing all the steps? just to get rid of all the waterline marks, rust marks and dust on the boat? thanks , again great videos, Alex from Italy
Yes for sure!
Can I use a regular orbital polisher to sand with?
Yes
I know this is an older video, but have you ever used the Ultralock+?
I have, it’s good but the The powerlock has always been my go to for endurance
Great Videos... I was wondering what do you use on the underside of the boat? I notice that you only sanded the sides to the waterline. Do you recommend not sanding the Hull? Thks
It is completely fine to sand the hull. We just were not doing that to this boat. Sanding and correcting the under side hull is a lot of work.
@@DrakesDetailing Thanks for the reply. Keep up the great video's and Merry Christmas !!
Thanks
How much does it cost to a do boat this size similar condition?
Love all your videos! I have a boat that needs to be sanded and brought back to life. I have a DA(harbor freight) but I do not have a rotary. Is it possible to get the high shine without running a rotary on it?
Hi Tony! Yes you will need a rotary for the heavy compounding and polishing steps. In this case, the only thing the DA will be used for is the wet sanding and applying the wax/sealant at the end
I was worried about that! Thank you sir! Keep up the great videos!
Hi there Drake. Just to make sure, for future rinse and wash after each use, we should not use Dawn but use the Orpine instead correct?
Yes that’s correct! Orpine will not take your wax or sealant off
When using a Griot's Garage DA what speeds setting do you use for the Menzerna 400 and the Jescar Power Lock?
6 on the Da
Question about a painted hull. Will it sand the same way? Not sure, but I think my boat isn’t gelcoat, but painted.
If it’s painted just skip the sanding.. just do heavy cut compound
