I’ve in automotive paint for 25 yrs and you are 💯 correct it’s all in technic and the correct pads & compounds no mater what your buffing !!!!!! Excellent technique and video love it!!!!!!
An no you can't use a foam pad as others had suggested lol. You are spot on!. Single sided pads are also better. Otherwise you need a bunch of attachments. You are correct. Learned alot. Thank you. Much appreciated
I usually spray the compound with water and find it makes it more fine each time it’s hydrated. In my experience only works best starting with a medium cutting compound. Saves having to use a 2nd product to polish. Not the text book procedure but works
Just started compounding and polishing a 45ft hull mould. The first day I started I had no technique what so ever and it looked bad, but today was a success I was really pleased with how it came out.
Great video, thanks for making it and putting it up for us. Really liked the tips on what not to do, cause im guessing you've watched enough kids get in the shop or "that new guy" and fight the tools, fight the method, and fight what you are telling them to do. I find a "what not to do" tip can get as much or even more mileage than a "how exactly to do" tip. Cause im going to try and do things in weird ways before i finally realize that the guy who showed me what to do had reasons for doing things exactly as hes doing those things. Why not to is a gift to us noobs. Thanks friend.
I detailed cars in the early 90’s and rotary is all we had. I just bought a forced rotation to do a boat for a buddy. It is a game changer for polishing but i had to use the old Mikita to compound with.
Hi from Bolivia, nice to meet you, thanks for this video, in my job they are using 3M PERFECT IT with the same machine DEWALT, so, very important to do low rpm, I confirm that works. Thanks
Thank you sir. Well explained. Im about to order a new trigger handle on my DeWalt rotary. Dropped it while repairing power cord.thanks again for the lesson. 💪👍🍻
Ive been doin boats for 5 years I learned to start and finish with a rotary. I completely agree with everything you did in this video except when i cut i run around 2600 rpms
Great Video, What’s the best way to just get ready to go in water? Use Elevate in spots that are bad, or do you need to do the entire hull? Then use the Finishing polish?
I have a Cris craft launch and only a small section on each side of the boat is oxidizing. Can I simply compound the oxidized areas and then go back over everything with polish then wax? Thanks!
1st, you're (everyone using one) welcome for the 849x. 2nd, nice vid. I never worry about people understanding the little stuff. Even with 3M's Heavy Cut, you can get a swirl-free finish. I've seen it with Super-Duty too but only once. Good stuff.
Great video Michael. Just want to ask you something. I want to polish an epoxy resin table top with a rotary polisher same as the dewalt. Since the gelcoat is a resin, if I have sanded the resin up to 4000 or more can I skip the first step with the wool pad and the medium cut compound and move on to the following steps?
I been using a rotary and offering buff and wax using a product with compound and finishing material and I haven’t gotten much swirls or holograms it’s very little but I thought that was all I had to do to make a boat shine like crazy guess I was wrong
Well I you have gotten the boat gelcoat to really shine/mirror like.. you Are doing it right!.. I been using rotary with white wool & yellow wool pads.. & Maguires 1step compound +polish in 1+.. ( problem is my Rotary buffer is lil old & doesn't have rpm settings!.. so I manage by depending on how bad oxidation is /age/roughness & color.. & I been detailing for years.. every single boat is always different on how /what I attempt to use.. recently I realized so.e bad errors on my end that kept leaving color/oil/polish>wax blotches/ etc.. frustrating the hell out of me.. then I couldn't believe what I was causing these errors from.. when I cleaned boat I used Boat wash mixed with Dawn soap 🧼.. the Mistake was boat wash had carnuba wax in it!.. 😮 .. This caused such issues.. because when you are using Gelcoat paint cleaners/Compound/ & polish .. You need the surface to be completely Cleaned of Any oils/Waxes /oils etc.. ya want a Very clean Surface (Preped) at all times when you are doing EACH STEP*.. SO VERY CLEAN DRY SURFACE.. FOR WHEN EACH STEP IS BEING APPLIED.. YES.. wipe>clean compound & polish aftwrwards.. crucial!.. Before you apply the final sealant> protectant like( Ceramic/ Wax/etc).. these steps are missed so many times, & we wonder why does it look blotchy or weird?.. .. In your case sounds like you had it right!.. Only thing else ya have to do.. is reclean/ or Prep clean (spray) wipe off & final step is.. The protectant of your choosing!.. Carnuba or Teflon wax or Ceramic glide coat/ or other sealants! .. If boat is Reflections shiny clean.. then the Protectant of your choice would now go on with such ease & wipe off.. Everyone has thier own methods.. this dude has alot of experience & does alot of cool creative steps.. me I like to cut corners but with shooting for exact same results!..
Whenever it stops cutting. Foam pads will start to grip the boat as they get clogged up and wool pads will start to cut too deep. Listen for a rattling noise from your wool pad when you clean it with a spur.
Polishing lightweight small parts is impossible with a random orbital , so rotary is the only way to go using 3 inch up to 5 in pads and I'm referring to Automotive two stage & single-stage paints. As a matter of fact I don't like DA's regardless due to the high vibration caused by various weights of different pads or else you have to change counterbalances which induces more work. so rotary truly is the best all-around polishing machine.. .
@@marinedetailsupplyco.-tamp3457 Thank you, I will let my boss know i have a detailer in the Tampa area that may be able to help our new boat customers if needed.
When using a Single-sided pad, you can remove the extending spindle nut, you'll have way more control over your machine (I designed) with a lower center of gravity. Without catching the sun's reflection on that black, how can I see if it's swirl-free? Next video option? ua-cam.com/video/3l6O69_Bt5U/v-deo.html
Great video Michael. Presta Super Cutting crème works filler also. Diminishing abrasive. So most boat detailers use a DA? Man, long process. Even my Mille gear driven is a chrome vs any Rotary but that’s me. Great vid buddy
I'm old and my back aches so I tie my polisher to my t top with a bungee cord. That way I let the bungee hold the machine up and I push it down and let the b8ngee pull it back up. 👍👍👍
How can you prevent or retard tanning on a white hull? I compounded and waxed the hull to a mirror shine. Kept the boat in a marina for 3 days to install new bunks on my trailer. Pull the boat out and tanning lines. Won't wash off. Now I have to spray on an acid to remove the tanning lines and destroy my hard work. Wish I have to do over again.

Huge help explaining why I was experiencing the problems and poor results I was having and how to do it right. Thank you!!!

I like how you did the intro after you polished it out. Backs up what you are saying and makes for a good intro.

Was a young detailer at the detail dock in st Pete in the 90’s. That’s all we used 🤙🏴☠️🤟
Just got my huge order of your stuff in and I start my first buff job with your system (including Stark) tomorrow; stay tuned…
I have that machine too, and it absolutely wears you out. It’s like trying to hold onto an excited 30 lb tuna after a while

Thanks from the UK, on a super-yacht, in the Maldives
That’s awesome how’s the weather over there?
I like the idea of only using a rotor and wool pads. Which pad would you use to seal/finish?
Amazing. You are the best!! Thank you.
Do you guys ever do in person training seminars?
Thanks for the helpful hints and products information and pricing 🙂.

Slow it down! 2500rpms and above will get your rotary buffer confiscated 😮
Great info here! The videos have been great, keep em coming!
@@marinedetailsupplyco.-tamp3457 #collaboration time 🤔
You mentioned applying a sealant right at the end of this but did not include details. What product did you use?
You know your stuff I'll give you that. Thank you for the video .
What's the max speed you would go during yacht compounding, polishing, waxing?
Hey great video. Will these starke products in that order be good for a Boston whaler (white) hull or just a colored hull?
@@marinedetailsupplyco.-tamp3457 I didn’t order anything yet, I’m referring to what was used in the video.
Is that extender behind your backing plate useful?
Is it possible to get the same finish result with the Lake Country purple pad instead of the Presta blue blend?
I think the rotary is the best of all

What do you recommend for removal of hard water spots on a 3 year old boat?
You can try the venom water spot remover if the doesn't work you may have to compound them off!
Will that blue wool fully remove Swirls and halos on black gelcoat?
Watching this video After coming home From doing a 32 Footer .. Wish I had seen this video before ..
Where you get the extension spacer for the machine
Great video and advice 👍

How often do you clean the pad on one job ?
Whenever it stops cutting. Foam pads will start to grip the boat as they get clogged up and wool pads will start to cut too deep. Listen for a rattling noise from your wool pad when you clean it with a spur.
Can you use elevate on clearcoat also?
Nice video and channel 💪
what speed are you working on the finishing pad?
Attribution to your mentor 👍
What rpm are you running with the Starke Elevate?
What people don’t know is the rotary used to be the only machine out there .

Rotarys are for finishing. Long Throw DAs are for cutting
Keep that puffer moving to slow risk burning through also stay off edges or you'll go through
I used a rotary for buffing and polishing auto paint for 10 years, I recently got an orbital polisher and will never use a rotary again for polishing.
Good comentario
What I have found out in this video is that every one I know is using the wrong pads

Almost finish without swirls? Mate you can finish perfectly with a rotary on the softest of paints.
BUT, your Dewalt does not orbit.

bro who taught u how to use a rotary😂😂😂. they need to be fired
