      You're not the only one lol, I remember when I was a kid, just like many other kids, I found the episode where there were a lot more action going on to be the best, as I got older and grew a brain lol, I started to respect the episode that had good writing, far more over the action episodes, unless they had good writing also.
      The irony is, many of the better episodes were filler episodes and yet ended up being some of the best ones I remember fondly and I think it's because of how well of a warning it gives us on how it reflects on real life, Measure of a Man is another classic in my view.

    My favorite line in this clip is probably "I spent many an hour there. It was my favorite spot to study."
    This was not a conversation between a captain and his crewman. This was not even a conversation between Starfleet personnel. It was a conversation between two guys with a shared love of the stars. Picard knew he would only make matters worse by pulling rank and checked his authority "at the door" so to speak, instead focusing on building a rapport and finding common ground -- such as a favorite bench back at the Academy. This allowed him to earn enough of Tarses's trust to learn his motivations and see that he wasn't a threat.
    What made Picard so effective a leader is that he knew when to use his "hard power," his ability to give orders and have them followed; and when to use his "soft power," his charm, respect that others held for him, AND the respect that he held for others.

That is intentionally or unintentionally(=compromising) surrepticious state propaganda. Because a righteous excuse is found without effort. The only good message would have been: If the principle is good, then there must be no exception made. The cases where we are tempted are the ones where we are tested, where it actually starts to matter.

Worf’s dad is considered a traitor at this point of the story and earlier in the episode, admiral Satie asks worf about his past, referring to his father. Worf avoids the topic, and states he prefer not to speak about it. What worf declares in this scene is ironic cause he states, “if a man were not afraid of the truth, he would answer”

    Of course, the High Council was worse. They already knew Mogh was innocent, but they still convicted him posthumously just so Duras wouldn't be punished. Politicians are strange: They turn a blind eye to the guilty if they're powerful yet always hound the innocent regardless of their status.

    What's pretty sad is how Simon, at this point, assumes that such a simple act of falsifying one's application is actually a most terrible offense (not to mention *why* he felt compelled to only not say he’s part Romulan in the first place) all because of Admiral Satie's obsession with putting people to justice. And all Simon did was mention a cousin race of pointed-ear folk, nothing malicious behind it, just worry of Starfleet's reaction. Personally, I think at least the majority of Starfleet would overlook the Romulan part of his heritage, and it's more than the fact that you can't judge someone based on their blood; Simon has seemingly nothing to do with Romulan anything throughout his life up to this point, minus what's in his own blood. He was even born on one of Earth's first off-world settlements, on Mars Colony.

    • @Kossimer
      @Kossimer 2 роки тому +2

      They probably would have overlooked his heritage, which is why the tragedy lies in his distrust and decision to lie. The admirable thing about Starfleet in this era is that truth and honesty are sacred. Liars are held accountable and it's literally a cause for a dishonorable discharge. Basing your application to enter an organization, which holds truth dear, and will define your life forever more, on a lie, is of course going to be a particularly egregious mistake. That's why it's such a big deal in principle in this episode. It would in fact be a mistake that would haunt a person like Simon in an organization like Starfleet for the rest of their lives. Being a big deal in principle doesn't means it must remain one however. Starfleet knows how to forgive, and there's enough special circumstances here I believe he would be able to stay in Starfleet after some consequences, but I think lying on your application is definitely and always will be a big deal.

Many times it was even something like “I suggest we raise shields” and then Picard would take a total gamble and not raise shields when dealing with an unknown entity or something. Of course, it always worked out for Picard and it turned out he made the right decision, but that’s only because that’s how the scripts were written. Honestly, I'd add a scenario to Worf: Let's say that a Klingon was looked at as guilty of committing a crime, just because the Federation and the Klingon Empire weren't on good terms at the time. Yet you did nothing wrong. You wouldn't react too well to the accusations, nor how they came about, would you?
    Basically, you can't go off on somebody just because you're enemies. Eventually, that enemy might end up being a friend at some point down the line. Worf would be a good example here: After the Khitomer Massacre, Worf looked at Romulans in a negative light, which makes sense. However, in this moment, it's clear that he's letting his emotions get in the way of his duty. Then that Schimitar battle happened. I won't say that his hatred magically dissipated, but Worf did acknowledge how the Romulan crew fought with honor against Shinzon's ship.

    Not everyone is cut out for academy life. Simon wanted to be in the action and actually be of service immediately. The route of the enlisted isn't the most glamorous but far more relatable. Non-commisioned officers are more likable among the lower ranks because they were also lower ranks. Simon will have that mark about lying on his application, but that shouldn't be held against him entirely. He knew that he would be called a spy if it came out that his grandfather, a man who he cared for very much as a child, was revealed as a Romulan rather than as a Vulcan. How many men and women are there today who have ancestry connections to people who did very bad things willingly? Just because our ancestors may have done something horrible in the past doesn't mean we will do something similar. Let our own decisions be the witness of our character.

    As I'm sure many are aware, the 7th guarantee is all but a carbon copy of the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution. In popular parlance, "taking the 5th" is often interpreted as an admission of guilt or criminal conduct (courts have even ruled that a 5th Amendment invocation can be used against someone in civil court), when this is precisely the opposite of what the framers of the Bill of Rights intended.
    The 5th Amendment is a direct response to the Inquisitions and the Star Chamber, which were government/religious means to crush dissent and cement the rule of the people in power at the time. Confessions were beaten out of you, and used against you to punish you for crimes you did not commit. We still do this today, except we've forbidden beatings and torture to extract confessions; now the authorities resort to psychological warfare which frankly can be even worse. This is why it is so important to have legal counsel with you if you will be interrogated by law enforcement, because nothing will make their jobs easier than a confession, and few things are a greater affront to justice than a forced or coerced confession.
    We must remember that even the worst defendants are innocent until proven guilty, and that using the 5th Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination is not a confession. It's a very short path from "It's practically a confession" to "It's legally a confession", and it could happen with a stroke of a demagogue's pen.
