@@EGarrett01 In the beginning of the series Troi was basically eye candy. The actress wasn't comfortable with the form-fitting body suits and low cut tops they had her wear, but her choice was to wear them or not be on the show. Since she's just eye candy she can't really be solving major issues all by herself, can she? The truth is that if Deanna's character had been utilized to her proper potential, she could have avoided huge portions of their conflicts and problems. But if that happened then there wouldn't have been nearly as much show and the writers would have had to work even harder. So eye candy she remained, even after they started treating her character more "seriously." It's one of my only major complaints about TNG.
@@collincivish8962 They could've had her character be of unique benefit to the crew more often. Like in the "fake Picard episode," she should've at least been the first to say that that's not Picard. Regarding the eye candy thing. Sometimes women are attractive or sexy. Just like sometimes men are tall or handsome. If you view that as something upsetting, you're going to be very upset very often and not change anything because people will always be attracted to each other and it's going to be a point sometimes in stories.
Within the context of the episode, it's supposed to be blatantly obvious because that Troi was an illusion, so therefore didn't have empathic powers. It's the kind of obvious statement a child would make, which is exactly what it was. In real life, (on the show anyway) her ability allows her to pick up on non-obvious cues and other more subtle emotions such as deception, and jealousy. Also she could sense another life form or sentient presence when the computer could not. I highly enjoyed this series so I will speak in its defense when necessary. I WILL say that it wasn't perfect, though.
LeVar actually mentions this once in a behind the scenes clip. Something about how much of a challenge it was for him (who uses his eyes a lot in his acting, paraphrasing here) to act on a show where they are hidden all the time. So essentially, he's probably moving his eyes around like that even behind his VISOR lol.
Considering everything can be explained away on that show with science jargon, I like to think every episode Geordie could have had his visor done away with, but they kept it just to mess with the actor. There are like filing cabinets full of unused scripts where Geordie got new eyes only to have a __________ (warp core explosion, Spot the cat, transporter malfunction, etc) blind him again.

So I think Riker maintained his composure pretty well overall in that situation.
There might have been a extremely small chance that the uniform had gone back to the way it was 16 years previously - but yes it does seem that the group that designs the uniforms get some sort of bribe from the companies that make them...
The original series movie-era uniforms were in use for decades. From late-23rd century until well into the mid-24th. Clearly occasionally Starfleet likes a design and decides if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
@@KnightRanger38 well considering geordi had the alternate timeline uniform after yesterday's enterprise, I'd be wondering why he had the same uniform as everyone else
Data is a revolutionary, ultra-advanced being capable of things nobody else can do. On numerous occasions he was the only reason the Enterprise survived, he can evolve and upgrade himself with emotion chips and the like, but there is no way in hell he's capable of combining the words 'can' and 'not' -- it's just too hard.
I spoke German until I was 5yo. German has contractions, but not in the same places as English. I've been speaking English for 67 years now, and I still tend to not use them: I go back and edit my text to put them in. If Data spent the first X years of his existence without contractions, he may still need a separate grammar loop to put them in.
I've always thought that was weird, and even more so now because my cheap smartphone can recognize contractions, both with auto-correct (Im to I'm) or if I use voice to text. Picard season 3 spoiler: Data can finally use contractions.
Data is able to repeat what anyone has said in their own voice, what if they used a contraction? If words are just sounds, Data not being able to reproduce those sounds is kind of ridiculous. Plus in TNG's very first episode (Encounter at Farpoint) he uses contractions often. I think that bit of "programming" is a flaw/hindrance by the show's writers.
2:08 Riker breathed an audible sigh of relief. "Oh good, it's *only* Romulan detainment. It could be worse. For a while, I was starting to get a little worried that that might have been the real captain!"
What I like about this is how Riker dismantles the illusion using the knowledge of his crewmen. He specifically targets parts of their personalities only he would know. For example; Picard wouldn't have shut up when told to and Troy would have absolutely freaked out if told to "back off" He used his personal relationship with his crew to prove his point. That's why he's Captian material and has been so for so long. To the point Picard asks him why he keeps denying the positions offered to him.
@@DM-kv9kj Get over yourself. Riker also challenges Data's computational ability and Jordy's technical skill ... neither of which are personality attributes. Yeah I _love_ people on UA-cam too ... try to point out a minor flaw and still manage to completely miss it with their own 8th grade take 😒
You gotta love Will's face at the beginning of this clip; he's already figured it out, and now he's just building an airtight case to confirm what he knew the moment he saw his "wife" in the previous scene. Funny part is, when Tomalok says "the charade is over", that's also a lie; there's more to come AFTER this amazing clip. Not the absolute best episode of season 4, but a good example of the generally high bar of quality we get from that season onward (and 3 was at least starting to get that good; 7 drops off a little but not much IMO, and 5 and 6 are absolute gold with few exceptions). By the way, I never noticed before that Troi has yet another new hairstyle in this episode, never seen elsewhere.
What I never understood is why the charade was even dropped. I've found myself in situations where I know I was being deceived, I think we all have. After going back and forth one starts getting comments like "You always have to be right' or "I feel like I'm being trapped by all the questions." or "You're just being an asshole". I guess I'm saying that if they had kept going long enough he'd be curled into a corner drooling and doubting his own sanity. So why stop? Romulans aren't above torture and they wanted information. Kept the plot going I guess.

It takes little emotional awareness to observe someone shouting and showing anger in his face to deduce that person is feeling hostility. Brilliant counselor! Have a chocolate.
True, she was a holodeck projection. Still her Enterprise character was very much the same. The crew may benefit from a compassionate, insightful counselor but the emphatic aspect, even within the Star Trek world is hokey. I suspect her greater role was to set up a romance for Riker. Otherwise she was an extraneous,an rather irritating, character. I also find her acting rather unconvincing.

Well, if you really are trapped at the edge of the neutral zone with an incompetent Laforge, an amnesic Worf and a defective Data, then it cannot get that much worse anyway.
It occurred to me some years ago that when watching any other Star Trek series, I NEVER think "hmm, this crew could really do with Troi's help right now." Whereas I feel like sometimes other crews could do with the help of for example Spock or Data or Sisko.
Riker: "Shut up!" Picard: (taken aback) "I beg your pardon." Riker: "I said shut up! As in close your mouth and stop talkin." Riker made damn sure Picard understood exactly what he meant.
More specifically they had the "simulation running at 5% capacity". lol. This is their version of "human music", and "my man!" If it were me, I would have trolled the simulation, just to see how far they would go trying to act like normal while I treat them in the most absurd way possible.
Wasn't Data also intended to have a blue uniform from the start as well? Since I seem to remember initial outfit screen tests showed that the make up for Data clashed with the uniform's blue colour, thus why Data was given a yellow/gold outfit. So in some timeline, despite that issue, Data wore blue.

And the one episode where Picard was replaced by a clone who acted totally differently and they didn't know if it was him or not, she couldn't say.
It's funny how Deanna's "power" is exactly the same: "I sense the obvious."
It's a character flaw.😬
I believe Marina Sirtis was irritated by this, feeling redundant.
Riker's biggest tip off should've been that their uniform style hasnt changed at all in the last 16 years.
For real, Starfleet uniforms change like every few years.

Programming.
Its a thing.
It's not that he couldn't, but that he'd never done so up to that point

I couldn't stop laughing at Picard looking like an old kung-fu master with his hair, beard and kimono-like admiral suit :')
Its a dress. A literal dress.
Theres an episode where he wears another one. Honestly i hated whenever that fruity crap would appear.
@@marcusbullock630 Bro, you're getting a little twisted over some robes, chill.
Ryker is such an under appreciated badass. as his character got developed over the course of TNG he became pretty awesome.
I loved how he was so tall, and with his back issues. He would always sit on thr chairs by stepping over the back of them.
I liked him from season 1
what do you mean 'under appreciated?' It's one of the most beloved characters in all Star Trek...
@@robertnett9793 He was the official galactic vaginal inspector of the ship. Only Kirk held that title before him.
i missed her wearing the uniform miniskirt…
Riker: "... or shall we end this charade?"
Picard: "... it's pronounced sha - _ROD_ !"
And he said it that way on purpose and knew he was right when it didn't happen.
Haha, shuh-RAID you are!
I recall in the teaser for the episode Riker did say "sha-ROD." Sure, I can recall a teaser from from nearly 34 years ago, but ask me what I had for breakfast last Monday, lol.
"Will, I sense how upset you are." Looks like the holographic Deanna is just as useless as the real one.
At least they got one of them right.
well the real one balls everyone improving moral
I sense truth in the original post. Lol
One would assume that a woman who can literally senses hidden emotion would be the most useful member on the crew of a diplomatic ship. But boy would you be wrong.
@WolfgangLMclain As funny as that is, I think her species is just pulling a con. As she doesn't really sense hidden emotions just states what is obvious from typical social cues. Guess it's a good way to secure fancy psychology jobs. That or everyone in the future just has aspergers , so her species simply seems like they're mystical empaths.
"Will I sense how upset you are!"
Really Deanna, REALLY?!
Yes,she always had something inane to say. Her character added nothing and detracted much.
soslothful Emotional awareness isn't 'nothing'.
It takes little emotional awareness to observe someone shouting and showing anger in his face to deduce that person is feeling hostility. Brilliant counselor! Have a chocolate.
a) this isn't the real Deanna Troi b) her empathic counselling skills are an essential component of the crew's functionality.
Riker: WORF, where did you get that scar?
Worf: In combat
Riker: What battle?
Worf: At your mother's house last night
Entire crew: OOooooOooOoOoo
Riker: That's a lie. My mother is DEAD!"
@@vanmoody Worf: "I don't see a problem here, Captain."
OooooooOoooOOoooo!!!
As Soon As I Saw This Comment I Thought Of The SNL Celebrity Jeopardy Skit With Alex Trebek And Sean Connery.
I warned you not to call her fat.
I love how the music escalates, it gets higher and more... dramatic when Riker says shut up at about 1:32. It really adds to the big reveal Riker is making and his frustration at what's happening.
Even when it's just a holo-character, Deanna still manages to be Captain Bleeding Obvious.
PlasmaMongoose PlasmaMongoose, I can sense with my empathic powers that you dislike Deanna. Maybe we should discuss your feelings in therapy.
PlasmaMongoose her character was far more useful in season one, also they kinda lamed data out after then, sure his character grew but they totally just started to ignore his android advantages
monster x so did u just like not watch the show or something? I never found myself saying "why didnt data.." basically ever lol.
so yeah, just sounds like ur talkin outta ur ass lol
Ben Masta go back and watch season one and two data was very agile and strong, Diana telepethpy was actually usefully as well
Ben Masta and you clearly are talking out of your ass.
When the Romulan said, "As you wish, Commander Riker," what he really meant was "I love you"
More like, "shit. There goes my whole career. My credibility as a Romulan is ruined! I told the empress to put me on this assignment personally. I'M GOING TO BE OUTCAST! I'll have to make an entirely new identity, or I'll be reassigned to toilet duty... do you even know what it's like when a Romulan takes a dump? Think of a Vulcan. They're calm. They do things unemotinally. Now think about Romulans. We take very paranoid and hasty shits. Very hasty. I don't even know why we have toilets. No one ever makes it to them... No! I won't do it. SOMEBODY SCRAMBLE HIS BRAIN AGAIN! We have to try again. And you, Commander Riker, are going to be very helpful this time, or I'll show you to one of our toilets myself."
@@Superman_Not_Clark_Kent you should watch "The Princess Bride"

Riker: **Angrily yells at everyone**
Troi: "Will, I sense how upset you are"
Riker: "Oh god... this is all real afterall."
I I screwed up big time
"Will, let me fly the ship. I'm sure no harm will come of it."
It doesn’t take Troi’s Betazoid powers to sense he’s angry and upset!!!!
@@idanoreilly It doesn't take Troi's Betazoid powers to sense most of everything she senses.
She's an empath
You don't have to pretend anymore. 💘
"no you cant dont even try" - what I tell myself all the time at college.
how motivational
Bra'tac You just quoted Star Wars to a Star Trek fan lol
Do or do not there is not try
Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
Unholy Sith!
1:44 "Will, I sense how upset you are.."
Looks like Troi got a promotion in this fantasy as well, she's now Captain Obvious.
Pretty much her entire career
OMG I laughed out loud....Captain Obvious....damn I wish I'd thought of that.
Oh no, she's always held that position
Riker goes full to the dark site with his Anger
“Will I sense how upset you are?”
“You probably will, you usually do!”
Forget about the Picard face-palm. “No you CAN'T! Don't even try” should be a meme.
No you can't make it a meme, don't even try!
Not how memes work. You don't decide what's a meme. They decide.
+ophello He did not try to make it a meme.
THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!
Make it so number 1
I love the look of shock and betrayal on Fake Picard's face. Damnit Will, you really hurt his feelings!
That's baller as fuck to tell Picard to shut up, even if Riker was pretty sure everything wasn't as it seemed
He had proof. He knew it.
As in, CLOSE YOUR MOUTH and stop TALKING.
Well, if you really are trapped at the edge of the neutral zone with an incompetent Laforge, an amnesic Worf and a defective Data, then it cannot get that much worse anyway.
First time I watched this episode, I, too, gasped when he told Picard to shut it... As in stop talking D:
scariest moment of his career
"Will, I can sense how upset you are." Good job Counselor Obvious!
"Will I sense how angry you are"
Gee I'm glad they have an empath on that ship, otherwise who could have guessed Riker was upset?
It occurred to me some years ago that when watching any other Star Trek series, I NEVER think "hmm, this crew could really do with Troi's help right now." Whereas I feel like sometimes other crews could do with the help of for example Spock or Data or Sisko.
Yeah Troi was basically useless except for being hot
Lol
Best compliment to La Forge. "You're incapable of being that incompetent, Mr. La Forge."
1:43 "Will I sense how upset you are."
So can everyone else on the bridge, thanks Troi.
“Look, I have one job on this lousy ship. It’s stupid, but I’m going to do it, okay?”

@@jamesanthony8438 That comment was perfect, thank you.
Riker: "Shut up!"
Picard: (taken aback) "I beg your pardon."
Riker: "I said shut up! As in close your mouth and stop talkin."
Riker made damn sure Picard understood exactly what he meant.
I'm still confused, what do you mean, shut up?
Star Trek had the "simulation inside a simulation" decades before Rick & Morty
Smh
GDI probably where they got the idea from
More specifically they had the "simulation running at 5% capacity". lol. This is their version of "human music", and "my man!"
If it were me, I would have trolled the simulation, just to see how far they would go trying to act like normal while I treat them in the most absurd way possible.
Dude, it's a very old trope that's been used hundreds of times. Even before TNG.
"Ship in a bottle" a simulation inside a simulation inside a simulation inside a simulated world played by actors.
Deanna has such insightful commentary. I had no idea he was upset! It really brought the scene together!
"I said shut up, as in close you mouth and stop talking", Still makes me chuckle.
Picard said you can only tell Wesley to shut up….no one else!
It is always so trippy seeing Data in a red uniform.
It's in the thumbnail as well, and it's why I clicked on the video :D Didn't remember when that happened and I was curious.
Wait til you see the ECH
"You are incapable of that level of incompetence!"
"Hey, you take that back!....Wait..."
For some reason I always loved any episode that centred on Riker. I always enjoyed seeing him save the day and this was one of his finest moments.
