Your style is such a genuine blend of thought-provoking art-philosophy and zoomer humor. This slaps in all the best ways! Cant wait to see what art you create in the future
Another excellent video from you. Glad im not alone in obsessing over perfectionism in my work. Theres so many times where i finish a roll of film and hate the photos that came out of it, only to come back years later and wonder why i beat myself up so much about them. And - making videos consistently is hard! But youre doing great!!
Same here. Once I distance myself from the work, I always appreciate it more. It’s a constant battle but we’re all in it together. Thank you for watching!!
I think being consistant is the goal to being a better artist, focusing on improving overtime and letting things fall where they may in the process. So long as you make incremental improvements each time, you'll eventually become a great artist. Perfection is just the barrier to progress...
This is a phenomenal video. More people need to see this! The book “The War Of Art” comes to mind but your personal story is so real to us all. Definitely sharing!
Tommy, thank you for posting this. I’m currently going through this same problem. I just feel so unmotivated to go shoot. I always have thoughts to go shoot but never acted on them.
I 100% feel this. Sometimes it is you getting in your own way, others it is trying to wear too many hats. You can be great at a few things or you can be okay at a lot of them. However sometimes it feels like you NEED to be great at everything and that's the frustration.
You finished the movie. I remember when I too found that clip I thought man, that's good. That's going in the edit. I struggle with the same things you go over in this video. I made a video every week for 6 months back in 2021 to get better as fast as possible, and now it's like what.. 2-3 months between stuff? Lots of ideas, lots of inspiration. It can be crushing. So I'm glad I'm not alone. Anyway, this a really *really* good video. Feels important and personal. Makes me want to make stuff. Great job, can't wait for the next one wherever it takes you.
Ayoo new upload lets go!! I'm somewhere with a sleeping person nearby so I'll watch this later, but i just wanted to leave a like and comment to help with that sweet sweet algorithm :)
Your work speaks for itself, good sir, keep at it! It’s hard to press publish - surprise, working on this myself, lol - but you are a great photographer (also a great darkroom tech) and I think everyone commenting here is excited to be on the journey with you. Van has created an amazing fraternity and we need to hold one another accountable to keep finishing our projects. This made me want to make things, thanks for sharing.
Happy to see you here my friend. Thanks for watching and for your kind words! Van has been a beacon of hope for all of us artists, we’re extremely fortunate
My dude, I wish I wouldn't relate to this as much as I do. It's a great video, everyone alive has gone through this and yet not everyone has surpassed it. Wish everyone going through the struggle the persistence of Hanibal, go through the Alps, on elephants, to conquer Rome.
Thank you for this! I'm learning this exact same thing! I made a video about my perfectionism/creative procrastination (this is better). I'm proud of you for posting this! I know it's not easy! I'm subbing so I can stay up to date on what you do next!
I've felt this feeling so much over the last 5 years (ish) of my life. Constantly dipping my toe in and out again, it's time to maybe just throw my entire self in and see what happens. Otherwise I'll never get wet (lmao sorry I needed to finish the metaphor)
Never thought Theo Von would give me the chills like that, amazing opening

It’s about drive

I feel this dude, uploading weekly gets so tough to generate worthwhile video ideas, but batching content, and momentum is crucial!

Thank you, Mr. Scott & Co.
Wow I'd never thought I'd see JHS here. I was thinking about the music industry while watching this video (I'm an audio engineer/AV tech)
