How to Use an OWB Holster for Concealed Carry

- OWB concealed carry is completely possible, and easier than you'd think. It does, however, take a bit of planning. You have to have the right gear. It also helps to dress a bit around the gun.

Good concealment with an OWB holster depends on a balance of factors. While it's not hard, it does take prudent selection of clothing, a holster, the gun itself, and also understanding how a gun and holster wear on your body. If successful, you may find it even more comfortable than carrying with an IWB.
The holster must ride high and the belt and tight to the body. In order for clothing to cover up a gun carried outside the waistband, your holster can't protrude too far down from the belt nor stick out too far from your side. That way, minimal clothing is needed to effectively conceal the gun and holster.
You also need to choose the right gun, though your specific shape and size matters in this regard. A taller person will have an easier time concealing a longer pistol. Therefore, you probably will have a harder time concealing a 1911 or a Glock 17 if you're five and a half feet tall. A relatively skinny person with a relatively low waist line will have a hard time concealing a Sig Sauer P226. Most people will conceal a smaller pistol much more easily.
You also want to make clothing selections that set you up for success. Untucked shirts can cover a lot of gun, especially if you wear a tall size. A light outer layer, like a flannel shirt, can also hide a lot of gun with judicious placement.
A vest works well...but is a terrible cliche. That's up to you.
OWB concealed carry is completely possible, but takes a bit of dialing in. If you pick an appropriate gun, holster and clothing, you'll find it's easier than you'd think.

Sorry haters, this is a good video. I wish more companies would take the time to make long videos like this showcasing their products. I'm sick of having a huge box of holsters I bought that just didn't work out. Going to order one of these next payday. They talked me into a Shapeshift OWB holster. And I don't regret it. It came in today after I ordered it last week. I wore it for a couple of hours today and was surprised by the comfortable feeling of the neoprene. Nothing cutting in my love handles and a nice and cool feeling.

This was a excellent informative video. When choosing a holster, many other companies cater to the Glock.Gun stores can't carry enough different ones which makes Alien Gear the perfect option.

I like the shoulder holster, especially since I like to venture out a lot, keeps my belt free for other things like my knife and flashlight, but also offers a lot of options for the multiple seasons.
I do not understand why there are negative comments, the smart ass trolls extremely aggravating to come across in the comments. Alien Gear is the most progressive thinking and innovative company in the firearm community. Name me 2 other holster companies that have anything near to the Shapeshift modularity, or any other innovative products that they offer.
Any negative comments on here are coming from people who DO NOT carry.

What gut?
Three reasons I, like Nate, like to carry with a shoulder holster. First, it is comfortable and I can carry it all day long. Second, I can easily cover it with any open light jacket, button down shirt, etc. In the summer, I wear a colored t-shirt with a snap western shirt over it. I can leave the shirt open in most scenarios but if there's a situation where I need to be sure not to show my gun or just need to look more civilized, I can snap the shirt which is very easy to open if I need quick access to my gun. Third, and last, the best reason for a shoulder holster is that I don't always have a belt on. In fact, I don't always have pants on (I know TMI) but I always have my shoulders everywhere I go.
Those are good reasons! That's is why the shoulder holster is so great. It sounds like you have found some ways to carry that work well for you.

I hate how a lot of companies just throw up a bunch of holsters on their site and you're just supposed to already know how each on wears or what's required to conceal it. This is why I'll be buying an Alien Gear. They let me know what I need to know instead of forcing me to scour the net to figure it out for myself.

When I was taking my CCW permit class, the instructor about midway through the class asked how many guns we thought he was carrying. Other than the 1911 on his hip and an ankle hold steer he showed us. Most guess about 4 or 5. He had 11 of coursed some were pretty small.

Nate, I couldn't agree more, shoulder holsters feel comfy to me, and practical, love it.....
I only use OWB holsters for open carry. I like Fobus personally. My first holster was an Alien Gear IWB with belt clips for Shield 9. Used it for maybe 8 moths but was just too big. I purchased a Ruger LCP2 which comes with the pocket holster. It is nice warm weather carry and a backup in some instances I pocket carry it sometimes but most of the time I tuck it in may waist between my shorts/pants and my underwear at 4 o'clock. I figured I would get a similar pocket style for the Shield. I ended up with a Sticky holster for it and love it. Stays in place nicely also at 4 o'clock unless you are doing acrobatics.

I have a couple different alien gear holsters, and they are great! Had a couple of issues with the clock tuck 2.0, and they replaced every time, no argument! I’ve sense upgraded to the 3.0, and never a issue, and I’ve also have the shape shift, great product!

When I'm in the woods, I like to wear my kyvek paddle holster with the paddle in my pocket. It keeps my 9 at a very convenient location, almost a quick draw position. Of coarse, this is a little off topic, not concealed, but very comfortable.
It's great that you have a set up that works! It is very important and can be hard to find. But when you are ready to upgrade from a Kydex holster, let us know! ;-)

Great video, but need to try that with a big guy of 6'2" and 275. In my younger, trimmer days I loved owb, but as got a tire around the middle, found it harder to find a holster that would work. There is a whole lot to learn here though, especially for the younger generations.

I luv my shap shift holster. My ONLY! gripe is for us 1911 guys is one size fits all Nerve racking sometimes. But other then that there great. The only time i use owb is in the winter when coats required

Awesome video! I have both IWB & OWB for my Glock 48, first holsters I bought for it and they'll be the only ones. Second to none. Plus, nobody else offers lefty holster for Glock 48 at a reasonable cost. Ordered mine and one for my mom (for Mothers day) who carries a G43. Excellent product, 5 out of 5, highly recommend!

You guys should have covered the problem that I 1st picked up on. The guy wearing the shoulder holster. I figured he had one on because of the way he was carrying his arms. He definitely looked tense and was carrying his arms out not hanging naturally. Very hard look natural with a shoulder holster.

I use a Cordura material, nylon webbing for retention and nylon piping on the edges. I use really wide (2") HD nylon strapping for the belt loop. My belt loop is positioned so that I have the center of balance below the top of my belt. I live in Amish country and I have an Amish harness maker make my belts. (haven't had one wear out yet)

7:50 big fan of a shoulder holster as well. I wear a vest of some sort pretty often, which is a pretty easy way to conceal. I just picked up the shape shift core kit, and may have to get the shape shift shoulder holster to go with it at some point.

* Firearm retention - the weapon does not slip out of the holster
* Holster retention - the holster stays where you put it
* Prevents Negligent Discharge - Trigger Guard and trigger is covered completely
* Easy to reholster - More for the range training
* Concealment - The best holster is garbage if people know you're packing
* Number Two - how easy / convenient / QUIET is the holster when you have to go number two at work?

I had the 3.0 and thought it was great.. Then I bought the 4.0 and it was an improvement. It's slightly smaller, and has a better backing. It's sooo comfortable, I forget it's on. I also have the 4.0 ankle holster. IF you have bigger ankles.. then it's probably not a great fit. I have not tried the shoulder holster yet. I do have a G&G Shoulder Holster and a Galco Miami Classic for my smaller guns and they are nice, but the great thing about the Alien Gear one, is the stretchable belt hooks. You definitely need those belt straps because when sitting, the shoulder holsters will ride up to your neck. Sitting and standing in a shoulder holster will shift it's position. Those back straps will most likely keep it positioned correctly. Every time I climb out of my car I have to re-position my shoulder holster and move it back down my back away from my neck. The G&G is a pain. The Galco is better with a smaller gun. Ill have to order the Alien Gear and try it out. Great video. You guys are kind of normal size. You obviously don't have "DAD Bods".... Things are a little different the heavier you are.

Don’t get me wrong, I have an older model Alien Gear IWB holster and it works well, but their new shapeshifter owb prints like crazy compared to many other brands! I bought one and was so excited to finally have one for my Sig P365 and was quickly shocked to see how much printing was done with it! Bought a Vedder Lightdraw owb and the print is completely nonexistent!

Since I'm not a PO or security or military I have a holster of simple design with retention screw.
I have no need for a level III retention holster.
I carry OWB by wearing a black Tshirt one size too big with a long tai.
I can carry my S&W 586 4" and Colt 1911A1 and never worry about accidentally exposing it while I reach up or squat down.
I bought a Alien gear IWB and hated it. Want it back, it's free if you pay the shipping. I carry a Crossbreed IWB for both of my carry firearms and love them.

And then you get oddities like my friend who grew up in Florida, moved to Illinois, and somehow doesn't need a jacket until it hits 34F.
Conceal clothing options are limited for me in Florida. It gets too hot for that many layers or thick material clothing. I would never feel comfortable with OWB.
I tried the cowboy boot a long time ago. The holster worked its way down and down until the gun was hopelessly stuck. Had to pull the boot off first.
I'm sure I could modify the shell easy enough with a Dremel tool to fit my rds, but no luck for my PL-Pro Valkyrie...
Unfortunately not at the moment, but we are always expanding the list of guns we can holster, so hopefully we'll have it soon.

I wish they made a holster for my Xds mod.2 9mm from Springfield which has a 4" barrel and a CT1500 red dot.. I just can't find a good holster for it anywhere.. I like iwb, owb, with a cant to it, appendix style and for times that I wear a jacket I also like the shoulder holster.. Hopefully they will come up/out with one soon.. I use a Tulster contour OWB with a S&W shield plus, conciels under a t shirt no problem.
A comment or two down someone is concerned about having a box of holsters. Its a positive indication you're still thinking-styles change, the body changes, and the gun changes. Having some holsers at hand will give you options. If none of the choices is satisfactory you buy another holster. At least you now know what doesn't work and why. Don't know anyone that throws away old holsters.

I have been carrying for over 30 years and for me IWB is not an option. Ive tried numerous IWB holsters and for me they just don't work. OWB holsters are actually easy to conceal Ive never had a problem

Nice holsters but neither one of these will work on a 90-100 degree day and you want to wear a tee shirt and elastic band shorts or any exercise clothing, which millions of people do. That's one thing that should be specified with 99% of any waist ban holster: you have to be wearing a belt to use them. And I'm no "hater" so refrain from any childish commentary please.

I cc in las vegas, usually with owb leather (highnoon holster with a cz spo1 phantom) i got 1 alien gear holstet for my p07 and its not bad at all.
most people wear jeans every day,.you should consider making OWB with a denim cover over leather or kydex and incidental showing will be obscured..Just an idea
That's a great idea, I doubt they will do it, but it seems like something I could do to my existing holsters
Contact cement, scrap denim, a kydex holster and it's a dyi. Even easier would be a paint job that gives you a color that is in the close enough category. Either would hide an incidental exposure.

I love my shapeshift holster kit. Love the idea of a modular multi type system. My only gripe is that it seems to be only for "stock" guns. I'm already thinking of putting lights and red dots on my firearms so might have been all-for-not.
Unfortunately, Shapeshift is not compatible with any form of attachments at this time. Due to the injection molding, it can be difficult to mold for it accurately while still keeping the overall shell durable. We do realize here that a good majority of our audience has some sort of light or laser on their firearm. Keeping that in mind, we may expand our options in the future as we continue to create further variety with our Shift shells.
@@Aliengearholsters That's understandable. I can save it for when I feel like carrying my G23 barebones or buy a shell later for a real compact sized gun. I exchanged the extra Beretta shell I bought with it for a cloak OWB holster and can't wait to get it and try it out.

that happened to me when I was picking up a bag of dog food. Fortunately I was in Chehalis, WA where everybody carries.
I have found tucking an iwb holster between belt and pants vs inside pants can be more comfortable for some reason
You need something for pistols with weapon lights. For example my Glock 19 gen 5 with a TLR7.
What an excellent example of going from a 34 waist to a 42 pair of levi's lol. Completely dependant on where you are, what you're doing, what pistol you prefer and obviously do you drive a real mans GM or you stick with Ford?

Hi guys, First, what brand is the Flannel shirt? I like the lower pockets. Also sorry guys. After needing to professionally CCF for almost 40 years I can tell you, many Law enforcement agencies now forbid ankle carry. This because if you get into a fight and end up on the ground fighting, frequently your gun will present itself to the bad guy. After spending much more than an embarrassing amount on holsters, one of the best I have found and worn is the Fobus paddle. Its inexpensive, easy on /easy off & wears close to the body. When you need to remove your gun in certain locations (interview rooms) and secure it, you do not need to handle it outside of the holster. Regarding IWB I know it is popular in some circles, however I personally find it uncomfortable and cant justify a second set of pants just to have a wider waistband for when doing IWB. I find modular types nothing but a compromise and some of the holsters in the video just plain bulky. Good luck and keep trying to come up with the perfect holster, if you do I will probably buy it.
No one ever stressed to me to buy a holster belt. Russell Crowe has the same belt I do and it has solved a big problem. Has metal layered between the leather.

My Alien gear holsters for open carry opens up at the seam at the barrel end. When I holster my Glock 17. Which the wrong holster that was sent to me in the four in one kit. For the Glock 19/23/32 my Glock fit perfectly outside the fact it wasn't for a G17.

Always have trouble with inside cary….I don’t wear pants lose enough for inside cary.
You guys are both printing quite a bit. Under the winter coat you were OK. Once you took it off your shoulder rig prints like crazy. The guy in the grey shirt was obviously printing. I have an alien gear paddle holster. But it lives in my drawer because it is needlessly bulky.....
It prints more or less depending on the person, but a lot of people have said it was bulking in their opinion. So we are developing a ultra-thin holster which hopefully we'll be ready to reveal in the near future. AG still does not accommodate the Glock 43X MOS with the Streamlight TLR7 sub. The 43X and 43X MOS were the #1 and #6 pistols in regards to sales in 2022 with the TLR7 sub being the #1 gun light sold to pair with those weapons. It's been over a year since I requested that combo. I'm sure others have as well. Maybe some disconnect between the design department and marketing?
The thing about reaching up on your strong side and it pulls your shirt up and reveals the bottom of the holster is comfortable doing this. You have to wear a comically long shirt In order to prevent this
