so riddle me this, if u go vegan u will need to supplemant b12 & IMHO choline. so how can a diet be considered whole and/or complete if u must supplemant? i agree about processed foods/sugars etc. i will agree we should more, much more plant based & much less meat sourced foods. look at our forefathers being hunter/gatherers using sticks/stones to hunt with. makes pretty good sense that meat was truly a luxury item back then. not many are even aware of choline which in the western diet there are only 2 foods that supply a generous amount, that being eggs & liver. however, going back to our forefathers diet, rabbit, possum & squirrel are all excellent sources. so to each his own, i enjoy both rabbit & squirrel but havent tried possum yet.
I had end-stage heart disease 16 months ago requiring 6 different medications and a stent. 17 months later I have no angina and have my life back. It took me a lot of effort to go whole plant-based as I hunt and fish. I have been solid on this new diet with the only exception of 3 times eating fish in a survival situation on an island. I now grow all my own vegetables and I can run up to 12 km with no chest pain. I have had no stent and I am not taking any medication. My LDL was 5.8. It is now 1.7 I feel good.
I wish I could hug you!! This is all new to me...I’m 56 and just had a heart attack with a stent put in! I’m not obese, thought I ate pretty well! Dr. Esselstyn has been doing WFPB diet for 34 years...so he had 50 years of growing up on meat. That's why he looks good at 84, due to all of the animal protein stores. He essentially put himself into a slow metabolism state at age 50. I'm certain he eats other foods like eggs or shellfish.
@@camwhitman5425 I've seen Rip as has my older sister and brother-in-law, and we all thought he looked great. I'd 58, so I think I have a pretty good bead on what people our age look like. But when you drop some of the excess myocellular fat, you do get leaner and more wrinkles. That's how healthy people in their 50s are supposed to look, not all plumped up with fat they shouldn't be carrying. Saw Esselstyn Sr. at a event in Cleveland last month and went up and talked with him and he looked great.
A great soul. Love him. My Dad passed away at the age of 52 years 36 years ago. If I had known this at that time, would have saved him from early death
The word is out. I suffered from metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar). I went whole food plant based no sugar oil or salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. Also, I save money by not having to buy pills or visit the Doctor. I am thankful to all the vegans who suffered attacks to reveal the truth to me.
The problem is getting people to believe. I know a person who's just had a stent put in and denies this info because her surgeon has told her its genetics
Where can I get information on plant based diet . I have Cerebral Palsy and spasm when I swallow. I am not sure I'd get enough calories or certain B vitamins. B 12 I think it is. There are medications I take. and other complications. I would like to go plant based but these are my reservations. Sorry I had the word 'diet' in the sentence for 1-1/2 weeks.
My total cholesterol and LDL are always elevated for the past 5 years. This mid January, it gotten worse 274/188 respectively. I ran into Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's video and also read his book Prevent and Reverse Heart disease. Followed his diet protocol(which is recommended for individuals w/ heart disease) even though I don't have a heart disease. I thought I'd give it a try and went on a WFPB diet. Also, my daily breakfast is cooked old-fashioned oatmeal w/ frozen blueberries and flaxseed powder. 3 - 4x a week on an elliptical machine for 15 - 20 mins. My lab results was mind blowing after 2 months on a plant based diet and some cardio exercise. Total cholesterol 189 and LDL 113. I responded well with the diet. I don't need statin drug as initially was recommended by my primary doctor. Still to this day, 90% of a time I consume plant based food and 10% I cheat(when I eat out)😀😀 I take daily Vit B12, Vit D3, calcium along w/ my Vit C.
@@yakncast7530People that don't eat meat have to take vitamin B12, mandatory. Sometimes if you don't eat enough of variety of foods you may be deficient in other vit and minerals, like iodine omega3 , calcium. But anybody over the age of 50 should take B12, since we absorb less and less nutrients.
I lost 97 pounds and reversed diabetes 2 since I started eating the McDougall starch based vegan and oilfree diet on June 26, 2017. Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Campbell and Dr. McDougall saved my life! Thank you!
The Tater Cowgirls You are seriously mistaken if you think diabetes is reversible. Once you have it, you have it for life. If your A1C is low all that means is you are managing your diabetes well. It never goes away.
Cathy Carpenter This was a major topic for me last week when I saw my endocrinologist. Because I was interested in something called the Virta program which is endorsed by the VA so I inquired with my doctor because they claim that they can reverse type two diabetes. He was adamant that once you have type two diabetes you’ll always have it. It doesn’t go away, he said what it does is it remains dormant. But you will always have it and It can always flare up at any time. Since my diagnosis I’ve lost 129 pounds. And my A1 C is down to 5.8. I’m not knocking this because everyone is different. I know how my body works though and it would not be receptive to this.
@@comfort_food_guy Thanks for sharing. I do agree that one man's meat is another man's poison. We all have to listen to our bodies and be in touch with our individual needs. Good luck with your healing process. I DO BELIVE however that you can be restored. Hence the importance to listening to your own body. The beauty of it is that we... Our thought..mind...body... Is ALWAYS CHANGING. If you're reaching for healing it cannot be denied you. We're so much more than our bodies. Keep listening to yours and it will guide you. To me that is so exciting. I'm full. Thank you again. Blessings.
Daughter, Jane Esselstyn and the doctor's wife, Anne, have a joyous UA-cam cooking channel. Love the whole family and how they try to get us healthy and living joyously longer!
Mrs Plant ma'am, it works because you cut out lots of refined sugar and carbohydrates. Are you bloated? Do you have tons of fiber sitting in your gut? Not me, not anymore. I healed all my problems by eating nothing but animal and animal products. When people start the vegan diet and think that they're healing themselves, it's only because they've cut out other problems. A fast would have gotten you the same thing. Veganism is a 20-year starvation process. Vegan babies literally die with full stomachs. We can only digest about 12 to 20% of nutrients and vegetables, because they are in their raw form. We have an acidic digestive system like all carnivores, herbivores have alkaline digestive systems, because they grow bacteria to do the digesting for them. Are you ever tired during the day? I used to be, not anymore. I'm never hungry, never tired, never feeling weak, never depressed, I can work a lot harder, and longer. Besides, it's not much of a healthy diet if you have to supplement just keep your nutrients up
I just can't understand why this message isn't being taught to children and being practiced in school food kitchens. Dr Esselstyn is such an incredible man and a an honourable Doctor.
Well the Meat and Dairy lobby in this country is too powerful, that's why....just look at what your children are being taught in public schools now...CRT/woke/ cancel culture.... President Trump has alway stated..."They really are not after me all that much, it's YOU....I'm just in the way';-)
@Dragovic Aleksa I was very anti vegan because I thought of Vegans as very preachy extremists. But after listening to Rich Roll and a few balanced others , including this Plant based channel I am walking away from meat . I am not fully there because it , to me , is going to be a journey of reductions. I abhor extremes in life and politics. Peace.
Plus Bonus Hi I got vegan about 2 years ago and I became a loser! I lost my extra weight naturally. I lost all my medicines and doctors visits. Every thing else improved.
@Dragovic Aleksa Yes , to evaluate your choice on moral , economic and environmental perspectives seems to me a better way of making decisions. Good job .
@Dragovic Aleksa Yes , there's a lot of content available regarding nutrient requirements. Just goes to show the internet can be used for good. Thank you for your concern and offer of help but I'll enjoy negotiating the path and learning as I go. Do you feel a difference in your spirit since you have taken this path ?
All the vegan doctors are lying to you for profit. If everyone went on a vegan diet, there would be malnutrition across the board, all sorts on non-reversible health issues caused by the vegan diet. That's when they put everyone on pharma drugs (which was always the plan). That's when they make their money. These vegan doctors are advocating for Monsanto and big pharma. Monsanto because vegetable monoculture is cheap and nutrient absent food that they can process with use of chemicals to taste like meat, but has no nutrition and is actually unhealthy. These vegan doctors are evil liars.
@@camwhitman5425 hmm the whole food plant based Drs I've listened to emphasize organic not Monsanto covered plants. What I hear these WFPB Drs say is that eating WFPB diet gets you off the meds....hmm maybe you're talking about a vegan diet based on processed food like substances. I could See how THAT diet could be unhealthy.
@@jameswyatt5859 Right. I have a doctorate in sports science nutrition. And my wife is a gp. So we see allot of people who have practiced this diet. The majority of people who have tried this diet do not last long even when taking the nessesery supplements. It works amazingly for a while but gradually your health deteriorates. Some people dont realise this, untill they have meat and dairy and literally feel healthy again. In addition the bloodwork we see from veteran vegans is appalling. If you are going to go vegan, do it for a max of 3 months at a time to get the benefits. All in all there is a perfect diet. But that has to be tailored to you as your requirements will be different to everyone else.
I have been on the diet described by Dr. Esselstyn for years. I have a history of CVD with stents but now I'm 77 and feel very good. My HDL is higher than my LDL. I am very active. Yes, I know I'm lucky and I can't help feeling the diet is a big part of it. I don't feel restricted in what I eat; there are just things that I ate in the past and enjoyed and I don't eat now.
So happy you are still strong and healthy and young at heart to see that people are finally listening and doing your life work. Thank you for everything. I hope one day I can meet you in person and shake your hand....no give you a big hug for helping us see your way...the right way of eating and becoming healthier. Your d best!!!!!
Dr Esselstyn is an amazing man! He and his entire family are dedicated to educating us about the benefits of the Vegan diet. As a Clevelander we are SO proud of him and his wife Ann (who’s Father was one of the founders of the Cleveland Clinic) and his daughter Jane Esselstyn who has a utube vegan cooking channel (a must watch). A. S. VanHoose same. Anything sweet makes my teeth hurt now. I'm actually eating a bowl of chickpea soup with cabbage right now 😊 it's also got avocado, onions, cilantro, lime, and a couple of seasonings. It's delicious.
I just discovered him by searching meusli and finding his wife and daughters channel! Subscribed to both now. This is just the stuff I want to know about. I don't have time for b.s. I just want straight talk and facts and specifics. Love this.
I can attest to the truth in this. My Mums GP screamed at her visit today, asking what we’ve been doing as her blood work is the best it’s ever! been in all the years she’s been seeing her! (She’s been plant based for just 6 weeks! So far! 😳😭) It’s all so emotional. I’m so blessed and deeply grateful to have discovered (stumbled across!) this truth about nutrition. I pray others do as well. To discover that you can! reverse the illnesses most Drs say you will be stuck with forever?! It’s life changing. Thank you for wisdom God. #Believe 🙏🏾❤️
La nube que flota excuse? What? The wake up thing means that so many people still believe that meat and dairy are so healthy and necessary and will make up any argument they can to go against veganism or a plant based way of eating, no matter how many facts and data and studies are in their face. Like they're in denial.
You are making progress Dr. Esselstyn. I was listening and I am glad I did some 3 years ago. Best thing I did for myself. Being a whole plant base consumer. And exercise of course.
I adore this knowledgeable, peaceful man. Was a "vegan" all of 2020 But getting nowhere other than feeling good about saving animals and the planet. Went WFPB in December of 2020 on my 68th BD. Eating like a beast, lost 35 lbs (so far), dropped total cholesterol 30 points (without going to the gym). I'm so energetic, and "fluid". My joints move painfree and freely. I'm more physically active than I've been in 8 years. My physician is WFPB✌️😁. What are you waiting for people?! #Plantspiration #eatingmyplantsoff
Wow, in this 12 1/2 min video, Dr Esselstyn explains succinctly the power and benefits to humans, animal welfare, and environment by changing the way we eat. Brilliantly articulated!
I'm on my 3rd week of plant based I love it! I'm 34 and noticed I have more energy I go on power walks and my shins do not hurt any more. And this is just my 3rd week I just started! My plan was to do it for 2 weeks but I love it I don't even crave meat. Will I go strictly meat less from now on who knows but as of now I'm loving this nourishment I'm feeling through out my body. I haven't lost weight but I lost 2 inches of my waist!! And I have 3 bowel movements a day!! I'm like a baby 👶 lol
Did this way of eating and had my cholesterol done at physical. I am on a statin but! my cholesterol dropped to 113 and my LDL to 51! Thank you Dr. Esselstyn!
Just recently tried vegan and did it for one month...lost 15 pounds, chronic hemerhoids and fecal leakage completely gone, no more chronic pain, more mental clarity, and on and on. Now on month 2 and going strong
My life has changed since I have become WFPB (July '2017). I would like to thank you all for all the informative information you send out to everyone. I share everything I can to help get the word out.
You know, I’m listening to this and crying. Very emotional. I wish I had known this years ago. I work with sick people. I want to yell it from the rooftops. I’ve been vegetarian for only 3 months and just dropped dairy so I’m keen to see the health improvement. Thank you.
Go plant based vegan not vegetarian. With vegan plant based you will see results in weeks not months . If you were on vegan by now you will be telling a different story .
I truly wish I had known this 20 years ago when I had a two vessel bypass. Now 20 years later I have 6 blockages which have been opened with a stent. I have very small little girl arteries and they are treacherous so unable to do all the stents. Several tries with different cardiologist in the right femoral artery has caused major damage without artery causing a stent needing to be placed. Needed a specialist to try and navigate the treacherous arteries to unblock the other blockages and damaged the left femoral artery and now I have a stent and that artery. I can see and understand the health diet and message that is being given here. Like I said I wished I had known this 20 years ago. I have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease
Thank you for this great video. I am currently 100 percent plant based and feeling so good and the weight is coming off. God Bless you for getting this message out to the world.
Most people need a big reason to learn these kinds of fundamental truths about health and nutrition. The prevalence of misinformation, self-serving industry advertising, lack of government support, and widespread nutritional ignorance often seems overwhelming. I truly appreciate Dr. Esselstyn and the other health warriors who steadily deliver this type of accurate health information. I only wish the pace of change was not so excruciatingly slow.
i watched "forks over knives" and "the magic pill" the other night. diametrically opposed views and both seemed reasonable and sincere. that's the root of some confusion. i settled on the plant based side. seems simpler and i couldn't see myself literally eating a stick of butter.
Larry Hutcherson Sr lack of government support? The government support behind the food industry is what ruined it.... Government said lots of grain, government said lots of carbs, government said low saturated fat. Government is wrong, government screwed up our health.
Natural Man you're cute. You fall for any propaganda don't ya, so long as it fits in with your world view and what the govt tells you how to live your life. The almighty government paid for studies could never be wrong or misleading could it. Nope. Trust big brother. Big brother, who runs the fda, which PROFITS big brother. The governments want us sick. They want to force single payer health insurance on us.
Plants have feelings, senses, and a nervous system.. they dont want to die. Humans dont have fermentation guts. Plants are a famine option for us to survive, not thrive.
Esselstyn's book "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" changed my life. I wouldn't be on the journey I'm on now to spread the word if it weren't for him. The guy is a true pioneer and legend in the plant-based movement.
Thank you Dr. Esselstyn! Your book has saved my life. My best hope is that my loved ones will see my great success and do it too. You are a savior in the purest sense of the word.
Whole-food plant-based food tastes good and it is really easy to transition, especially if you already have a friend who eats plant-based. Ask if you can come over and help her cook dinner and see what you do differently and why. And enjoy the taste. My husband never thought he could eat this way but he now even tells our children how good it tastes and he is post prostate cancer surgery. I cook in batches and swap foods around so the cooking time per day is really no headache. One thing I did not think would happen is that you become happy, I feel joy. Who would have thought, but my gut now can produce its own serotonin and the extra gets shared with my brain and I am suddenly sleeping better.
Wow! I just started the Starch Solution diet this week and I feel great so far. I wish I had learned about this many years ago. I had been on keto previously and it was not sustainable. I gained back even more than I lost. I feel like I can do this for the long haul. I’ve got about 35ish lbs to lose.
I ate keto for 4 years. Had high BP and bleeding guns. Was nervous to try the Starch protocol given the ongoing bad wrap on carbs. Within 2 weeks my BP went from 180’s / 100 to 117/76. Gums stopped bleeding and returned to a healthy pink. My sleep and digestion improved 10 fold! I do miss cheese but never again. I now crave broccoli 🥦 and sweet potatoes. I wish I knew of this 20 years ago.
My mom had a minor stroke when I was a child, has suffered from colitis and hypothyroidism for many years, is overweight, and yet she has INCREASED her intake of animal products and minimized the veggies she eats, thanks to the keto diet. :-( I hate watching family members suffer needlessly. They are entirely unconvinced that a WFPB diet would reverse their ailments and won't even give it a try or a closer look. My husband turns to fast food and junk food to relieve stress, and I worry about his future, too. It's such a revolutionary thing to discover and embrace a vegan lifestyle, and I sincerely hope he comes around to it before very long.
Dean Foods filed for bankruptcy last year and Bordens just filed for bankruptcy two days ago. Wisconsin has the most dairy farmers in bankruptcy in the entire country.
@@naps3386 Soon they'll have to change, thanks to social media the word is spreading no one wants to die from the wrong food. A lot of people commiting food suicide
I haven't lost weight because I am already on the low side weight wise at 71 but I am feeling so well on the plant based way of eating. I feel so much more satisfied after each meal.
I appreciate this video and the info and warnings it contains. It's true that some of the longest living populations (Blue Zones) eat a plant based diet. Unfortunately, the good doctor omits that most of these populations also eat a little bit of lean animal protein. In Okinawa , the population consumes seafood. In Costa Rica, the native people eat chicken, beans and rice for breakfast. A little chicken and a lot of beans, rice, etc. So, in reality, these populations eat a predominantly plant based diet, not a strict vegan diet.
KJ's WHAT I EAT KJ's WHAT I EAT eating plant-based makes you bloated and fat. One, look up leaky gut syndrome, to look at how fiber rots in your gut and just stays there, 3, look how plant nutrients are in their raw form and don't break down. We need herbivores to break them down for us. our digestive systems are acidic, like every carnivore on this dang planet. herbivores have alkaline digestive systems, because they can't break down their own food, instead they cultivate bacteria to do it for them
Drink a bit of apple cider vinegar diluted with water b4 you eat certain foods that cause bloating. In my case it was lentils with black eyed peas and broccli. Steam broccli b4 eating also. some raw veggies to cause bloating. My bloating completely went away after doing these 2 things. (apple cider vinegar and steaming) It works and can still eat healthy without the bloating.
Tony C I started something pretty akin to the carnivore diet, I get no more bloating at all, everything is consistent and better than before. I passed gas maybe once a day, somewhat more if I eat a lot of eggs, they have nothing in them or whatever gas it is.
I think most people know that plant based diet is best for health but the number 1 problem is that most people are so addicted to their animal and processed food …. so its very hard to make the change .
I am 65. My age spots are lighter, and 1/2 have disappeared. My skin is less ruddy, my ankles are no longer swollen. I've been vegetarian for years, but have gone complete Vegan for the last 2 months. I had lost some weight going vegetarian and stopped drinking milk at the same time and my arthritis was cured. But an occasional dinner of meat, and soon I was hooked again. Which lead to my gallbladder surgery. Since then I've done better but was not losing weight, which I needed to lose. Since getting serious about being Vegan, now I have upped the anti and eat mostly raw and feel so good. It took me a while to be able to do this as at first, I was either not chewing long enough or lacked the enzymes at first as my bowels went so much I was sore. So I backed off and then was better and creeped into raw more slowly and am just fine. Feeling the best since being a teenager. Lots of energy. Have to get off coffee, it is the hardest to give up. I drink it about half the time though and usually don't finish it, so I am working on it. Quit beer and wine without an effort. I still have a problem getting a good night sleep except for sometimes. When I lose enough I think I'll take up running again as when I was younger, it made me sleep like a baby. That is how good I feel.
Shawn Darling You’re such a liar! Every thread I read your comments in are lies! My god get lost troll. Go get a life, you must be very lonely. Pathetic 🙄
im 30 and taking 4 pills because im suffering from hypertension, cholesterol and suffered chest pains already. i started the diet 2 days ago :) cant wait for the rest of my life !!!!! thank you for FORKS OVER KNIFE documentary
If you just stick with the wfpb vegan diet you really start adapting to your diet. I used to love eating cheeses and crackers etc. Within one month of sticking to my diet I began to not crave those foods. I started swapping out my snacks. If I want something sweet I'll have some frozen cherries or blueberries. If I want something that I feel is "guilty pleasure" I will find a way to have a healthy, but satisfying vegan version. I'm never going back! #PoweredByPlants 💚💚💚💚💚💚
If Dr. Esselstyn started lecturing at every Medical University in this country, they would start a war against him to discredit his name in every way possible. I had a mastectomy two years ago at a teaching "University Hospital." I did tons of research about Cancer and nutrition before and after my surgery. I was horrified by the menu they gave to the patients. Nothing but unhealthy foods, everything that I - as a recovering Cancer patient - wasn't supposed to eat. Healing starts in your gut. Thank you for this great video.
Nixon’s war on cancer, 1971... that’s all I’m saying. Treating an unhealthy diet with prescription drugs with all the side effects is a tired approach. There should be a prescription of a whole food plant based diet.
Never happen because there is no money in it. I'm 77 and don't use any meds. I have friends my age and older that are so into the traditional western medical system that they are scared to even entertain the idea of a change. They look at me like I am crazy. Haven't been to a doctor since 1986 and they still won't listen to me. I don't talk about it anymore. Sad.
Patrick van meter Yes, it’s very sad... but I wouldn’t say “never”. No disrespect. While you are right there’s no money in a cure or any real money in proposing a plant based diet what we do have is the internet. Info is being passed around like crazy and one just has to make sense of it all and follow ones own heart. I think too perhaps that a plant based diet is so straight forward, so simple that the average unhealthy person can’t comprehend. But I for one will press on, I’m a third your age and I’ll be saying the same thing about being on no western meds when I’m 77!

The Tater Cowgirls You are seriously mistaken if you think diabetes is reversible. Once you have it, you have it for life. If your A1C is low all that means is you are managing your diabetes well. It never goes away.
@@comfort_food_guy hmmm are you sure? There are plenty of testimonials saying otherwise.
I know how my body works though and it would not be receptive to this.

awesome to hear!

All the vegan doctors are lying to you for profit. If everyone went on a vegan diet, there would be malnutrition across the board, all sorts on non-reversible health issues caused by the vegan diet.

Smart Man!! 💗 eating plant based is awesome

I had to take a life long militant vegan to the hospital due to a gallbladder attack.

So lovely to hear you share your ideas. Thank you dear doctor!
A true humanitarian and caring doctor. TFS

Vegan Crue EXACTLY 💯
Keto seems better
Never happen because there is no money in it. I'm 77 and don't use any meds. I have friends my age and older that are so into the traditional western medical system that they are scared to even entertain the idea of a change. They look at me like I am crazy. Haven't been to a doctor since 1986 and they still won't listen to me. I don't talk about it anymore. Sad.
Research shows some foods are hybrid and high in lectin.
