So...we wore these when we were kids. BUT in the late 1960s Sear sold what appeared to be a Chucks knockoff. The Sears shoes were less than half the price of Chucks at the spots store. However, we discovered that if you peeled the little rubber "sears" lable off the bottom of the shoe you actually owned real Chucks! I suppose that Sears worked some sort of deal with Converse to sell overstock maybe?
You get the same thing with food. The big companies make their own cookies and then make off-brands. Kirkland coffee at COSTCO is actually made by Starbucks!
No. Sears had a manufacturing agreement with Converse to make Jeepers. You are forgetting the big white circle that said jeepers on them. That ended by the early 70s due to Cheaper Jeepers comments/attitude. They moved to Winners. Made my adidas and converse.
I actually still have a pair of white high-top Chucks that have Made in the USA on the inside,..and on the label on the rubber on the back/bottom. I got them at an Outlet Mall about 25 years ago. I wear them occasionally just as a conversation piece. Hard to believe that NBA players used to play with them on. It literally feels like you are wearing socks only,......there is so little padding on the bottom.
you can still get pre-nike buyout chucks from converse japan. the government there didn't let nike buy out converse or the trademark in japan so they continued operating independently and never cheapened their shoes.
You will probably most in the early NBA used the leather version more, before the dumb rule in NBA on needing all 90% of shoe white in 1969 when other shoes Adidas Superstar (original high top model came out) and Puma had a model as well that had come in similar colors.
Chucks had a decrease in quality around 1989, the chucks before looked like the 70s model and had a lot of foam and arch support, in the 90s converse moved away from sportswear and removed all thqt extra foam and cushioning so the pre 90s chucks were the best quality. The 90s made in usa are still far better than the modern ones but they dont compare to converse in their prime
I wore these as a child in the late seventies early eighties. I bought a pair off a clearance rack a few years ago and they have become once again my favorite casual footwear. Sort of the original barefoot sneaker but with some squish. I do not run or workout in them however. It's almost hard to believe today that's what they were made for.
I found a pair of 1963 Converse "Football shoes" in a vintage clothing shop, 30 years ago. My father said "I had the same shoes in 1958." The soles are cracked now but I I'm still holding on to them in hope that they can be somehow repaired. Such a cool piece of history.
I have a USA made pair of 1982 chucks in unbleached white canvas original in the box with the receipt still. I wear them every now and then and they haven't self destructed yet which is nice.
If you’re not aware, both Converse and Vans make shoes specifically for skateboarding. So they have their basic shoes you can get from the mall. But then they have lines of shoes you can get from skate shops. I would love to see a video of you comparing them.
@@tjeym8897 what? Both of them are "technically" basketball shoes, however what OP said was true, Converse make shoes specifically for skateboarding, so does Vans and so does Nike. No one has really skated Air Jordans since the 80s mate.
Loved the video. I wear the 70's daily for 8 hours a day and love them. The classic style can take you almost anywhere, and access to a variety of colors is pretty great. Would be interested in a comparison to the All-Star inspired shoes (Nothing New, U.S Rubber, P.F. Flyers), and how they compare to their "upgraded" counterparts (Goral, Thursday). Looking forward to the next one
I have made sooooo many footwear decisions based on your videos... thanks so much! Palladium, Thursday, Converse... all are in my shoe rotations and all because of these videos!
I have been wearing Chucks for years. Since the demise of the Chuck Taylor II, I have the 70s as my favourites. I can walk all day in them and they are great for long driving sessions too. I've had Olive Green and Sangria... It might be time for a classic black and egret pair. Great video!
Hmm, I've been wearing a lot of Chucks in the past years, but I quit buying them as the last pairs I bought, the glue holding them together started disintegrating after only a few months of wear. It was very disappointing, do you think the 70's would last longer? I even had a winterized pair and they too fell apart, a real shame because I love the look of those things, and having all black pairs made them not stand out a lot so I even wore them to the office.
I just got a new pair of Chuck 70’s. They are even cutting corners on these now. They no longer have the extra canvas heel cover. Instead, it’s just a plastic heel counter between the two layers of canvas. The extra canvas reinforcement on the inside where the toe stitch is has also been removed. The outsole is now the same felt lined one that is on the all stars. Finally, the insoles are not the same. They are much lighter/cheaper feeling. In fact, the shoe itself is several ounces lighter than the previous chuck 70 (the ones in this video). So basically, the 70 is now built like the all star, with a little thicker canvas and a canvas lining. All of the other upgrades have been removed.
@@vasu1197 Yes. He is reviewing the older version in this video. I have about 10 pairs of those so I am very familiar with how they are built. The current 70s are lower quality. I’ve purchased three pairs from 2024 and they are all lower quality now. No extra heel counter, no toe area reinforcement, different insoles, etc. Overall lower quality for the same price.
I love my Converse and recently bought Chuck 70s after watching this video. I see that the Chuck 70s are made better than the standard ones, but the regular Chucks feel so much softer and lighter on my feet. You can't beat that classic Converse comfort. While they get worn and torn quickly, I’d rather buy the regular ones and replace them as needed than stick with the heavier Chuck 70s that last forever.
I tune in here the odd time (Subscribed) .. But this is the first I heard of the new modern built Jungle Boot!!!. I'm a Canadian Armed Forces veteran (served in the reserves, many years ago) . I was twice issued a (pre-worn) pair of the original Jungle Boot, with an ounce of that, off white, anti-fungal powder dumped inside!! :) ... Much more comfortable than our standard cobalt boot! Or those awful hard leather parade boots! This is very interesting!! ... Definitely adding my name to the email list here!
Good review! Recently I bought Converse Chuck 70 Bosey (A04531C) which is even more upgraded version over regular Chuck 70: rip-stop canvas and thicker and reinforced sole.
Loooooove Converse! Pretty much the only shoe I wear over a decade now. 70’s are now my preferred style now. Loved the All Star II’s when they were making them, I think those had to be my favourite update they attempted; had a couple pairs of the Flyknit ones *chef’s kiss*
I wore Converse exclusively in the 60s, and 70s because that was all there was. Never understood why I couldn't pass the running test at school until I got a pair of New Balance and blazed through the time tests. 70s Converse sucked. I didn't know shoes could be comfortable until I got a pair of Redwing boots in my Jr. year of high school .
When we wore these back in the 70s-80s they were only 12 bucks when they went up to 15 I was in shock 😅 but 60 bucks for them uncomfortable shoes is frickin crazy.
That's right! I bought my 1st pair for $10.80 with my first paycheck, age 12-13! My mother promptly drove me back to the store to returned them. She then drove me to our bank and made me open an account with the $10.80. She surprise me some time later with a pair. Good lesson.
One thing you may want to compare to the Converse, is the Sperry canvas deck shoe. As a kid, I wore the Chuck's, but as I got older, they really started to hurt my feet. My father bought me a pair of Sperry Canvas deck shoes and I wore a pair of them most of the way through high school. I still wear them, and wear them out. I just bought a pair of Converse high tops though, so I'll give them a try. If they aren't comfortable, I will switch back to the Sperrys'.
Awesome video. As someone who grew up with Chuck Taylor's from the 80s onward, I've got to say, the Chuck 70s offer everything I've always wanted in my traditional canvas sneakers. They are definitely worth all the extra money and more.
Wow! it really is constructed better, and not just a sales gimmick. Love what you do, it's really a public service. Informing people on where to spend their hard earned money.
12:35: there is very clearly a layer of something hard looking between the outsole and insole of the Chucks that isn't on the 70's which I assume accounts for the puncture test difference. Weird you didnt notice that.
I've been wearing vans most of my lifetime and never wear any of converse. After watching this video, you kinda convinced my to get at least one in my lifetime.
This made me go and compare mine. I’ve got a canvas pair of All Stars and a suede pair of 70s both from 2018. My All Stars are noticeably less supportive for the arches and heels than the 70s, and they don’t have the extra stitches on the front, but they DO have the heel piece. So they’ve been cheapened EVEN MORE since. I almost always wear my suede ones since they’re both warmer AND breathe better, so I don’t mind paying less for my brighter-colour occasional-wear canvas ones.
I was concerned about the reputation that Chucks have for being too narrow for all day comfort, so I sized up. I also custom ordered a pair through Converse's fun design your own program, which at the time let me do black on black with yellow stitching, reinforced pull tab heel, gold eyelets, yellow laces, yellow lining, and embroidered message on the tongue. They've since changed what you can customize on the Chuck 70s, but I'm really happy with the extra durable features of the better model.
happy to see this channel almost 1m! I'm happy with my chuck II with Nike Lunarlon insole from 2016(came from jack purcell made in the USA since highshool). was planning to buy chuck70, but i am a bit disappointed with the insole coz i got used to that lunarlon that came with chuck II. original jack purcell to chuck 2 made huge upgrade to comfort for me. and now going chuck 2 to chuck70 is a bit downgrade in my exp that why I personally didn't buy it.
I work at vans and recently noticed that they started including the felt/fuzz on the bottom of toddlers and kids shoes, most likely for the same reason converse does it on their shoes.
Would you say Vans have gone down hill as well? I feel like the old school Pros are no longer built the way they used to be. Like the rubber wears faster and shoe just doesn’t last the way they used to maybe 6-7 yrs ago?
What they have done is taken the old converse all star and rebranded it and upped the price. The "all star" now is a "cheap" shoe for the price that the old ones were with less quality in every single department. You love to see it.
When I was a high school kid in the early 70s, nobody in my area called them "Chucks" back then, we called them "Cadillacs". Sadly for me, my mom worked at Sears, so I wore Jeepers, which were not nearly as comfortable. I wear Chucks 70s today, they're comfy for casual walking.
Great overview. Now I really want to see a comparison between the Chuck 70s and PF Flyers. Next time I need a new pair of Chucks, those are what I'll be choosing between and I'd love to see a redo of this comparison.
I’ve owned a pair of chucks since I can remember. Never once have they fell apart. Since like 2000. I’ve been putting mandatory dr sholls gels inside them. The most shoe I ever owned multiple times easy to clean an care for. Best shoe an go to shoe. In my closet.
I remember when I was a kid, I wasn’t as old as I am now. Actually back in the 60s, I wasn’t even born yet. But that didn’t stop me from doing things I could start cuz I wasn’t alive yet. Still tho, I’m young enough to know I don’t know everything and old enough to have the memory of my first pair of shoes being chucks. Come to think of it. I had a grandpa named chuck. He was a professional boxer who wore converse. A conversation with myself. I also wear boxer briefs. A brief history of Me. And my Great Grandfather Chuck.
I have been wearing chuck 70’s every day for the last few years. They last around 11 months before needing replacement. They fail by detaching of the outer rim from the sole or even from the canvas near the toes. Also the canvas near the toes develops tears and holes. They’re really the perfect shoes for me, comfortable, warm in the winter and cool in the summer
I have the same issue, but in my case it seems to happen after about 2-3 months. Decided to try the 70's after 2 pairs of the regular ones failed, but the 70's also had the sole to outer rim separation problem. The shoes are great, but they fail due to quality control. Looking deeper in the spot they separate it seems that there is nothing there to keep them together, not glue or anything. Once the first few millimeters are worn through the whole thing goes...
mine have lasted nearly 2 years now with daily wear, they have detached a bit but nothing to actually compromise the shoe, just looks beaten up. I clean them fairly regularly so idk if that helps or not. also replaced the laces because I washed the old ones with bleach and that destroys them
Real. I have 3 Converse All Star High models because I love the silhouette and I also go to the gym. The fact that the sole is very close to the ground and does not have as much platform in the heel allows me to have greater balance when handling a bar with plates, but everything you mention in the video is true. I have walked a lot with the 3 pairs and they really are not the most comfortable. I once tried on some Chuck 70s and it really was like night and day, the step feels much more comfortable. Where I may disagree a little, is that although it has a cheap construction, the pair does not break as easily as people think. In my case, without exaggeration, every pair I have of All Star will be more than 4 years old and still Being totally usable, as I say, I have walked a lot with them.
I wear them for weightlifting too. It's night and day compared to using something that's not flat. And honestly, I don't find them uncomfortable anymore. They're not barefoot shoe levels, but I have the wide version, and the collapsed arch on one of my feet is starting to come back as well as the separation in my toes. I've come to realize cushioned insoles are a detriment more than they're a benefit in the long run.
I guarantee you the felt embedded in the sole of the All Stars improved the puncture test results. It's no different than adding rebar to reinforce concrete, mixing horsehair into plaster to reinforce it, or adding steel belts to reinforce tires. The felt fibers act as a reinforcement to the soft rubber sole by binding the rubber together.
I have 6 or 7 pairs of Converse, including the classic chuck high tops and the chuck 70 high tops. I bought both pairs of Chucks 4 or 5 years ago thinking when the classics wear out I'll move on to the 70s, but that classics haven't worn out yet and my 70's are still brand new in the box. I find the classics extremely comfortable too
i have to pairs of 70's, never had regular chuck taylor's and I'm glad i didn't bought them. I love the 70's and thanks for the video, love the content
@RoseAnvil I‘m always wondering why you guys don’t have a single video about any boot by „Haix“. Are they just not as known in the US as in the EU? They are even more well known in police and military circles, as they officially provide boots for at least the German and British military.
When I was a teen the inside of the regular all stars was just canvas. They added that padding type material at some point. I'm 31 so I was a teen like 2006 to 2012
I grew up with the invitation from Kmart in the 70s. I just bought my first pair of 70s today. I like them they have a purpose. I think they’re gonna be great traveling shoes ordered in the car all day driving I have bad feet. I think if I have to do running in tons of walking, there’s other shoes I would rather have on my feet but I do enjoy these. I would like to get a pair of low tops maybe next these are green tie-dyed. I’m thinking either navy blue or white and maybe I can just get by with the regular chuck all stars
Why? They're trash now. They don't even have the PF insoles that are in the name anymore, just some cheap, flat crap from the dollar store! That's what new ownership does!
just got my brand new black (or navy) and midnight purple Chuck 70s, for £21... an absolute steal. I'll be going back for the Black & Boston Celtic 70s, as well as the khaki pair... and yes, they're also £21.
Huge Chuck fan here, the biggest pet peeve i have on the new "cheaper" chucks is they went from that classic super comfortable when broken in canvas inner liner, to a cheap jersey material to cut down on the squeaking they do when they're getting broken in... i have a pair of OG canvas inner high tops that I've been wearing on and off for the past 4 years with no issues at all and they are beat all to hell, but i got a new pair of different color high tops and noticed the different material and construction on them... They didn't even last me 2 months and they already failed so i just went back to my old ones... from now on i buy all my converse second hand at either thrift stores or online that are pre "updated". I definitely have to give the win to the 70s Imo JUST because they kept that canvas inner on them.
In the late ''60s, Kmart had "Trax " versions, $3.99 for the low tops, and $4.99 for the high tops. Don't know who made them, but I played basketball in 5th grade in a pair of high tops. The good old days!
I think my last pair of converse lasted me for more than 7 years, and the wear and tear is mainly shown on the side of rubber felling out, other than that there's literally nothing to complain about!
Grabbed a pair ofimited 70s during the pandemic Worn them specifically for the gymnand physical exercise Hundreds of miles of cardio. Thousands of pounds lifted. And countless festivals. They are still as durable as day one.
~~Class of '88 here&starting at 6yrs old I came to prefer Puma or Adidas for Soccer&Football until Sr year. For every day Sneaker/Shoes I've always preferred mid-tops&to put it bluntly. Growing up, be it previous 2 mentioned or Nike? Not one of them lasted long enough for me to outgrow. Reebok's were the new hottest thing early to mid '80's, I don't think mine made it 8mos? Other 3 at least came damn close to year. In HS, upon wearing out another pair Nike I came across what I'd yet to try, black on white leather All Stars&weren't Chuck Taylor's either. They're like the mid-top version of their Leather Pros launched in late 70's which Dr. J which as did Jordan in college. Perfect timing too no more growth spurts, aside from the pool , fishing or weddings/funerals I wore them every day. Two years before started to see some wear lasting 5 or 6 yrs. Bit of extra life due to not wearing at work hence the following pair being good 8yrs? Good timing again w/BOGO 50% deal getting usual black on white&pure black pair. White almost lasted 10yrs&black look damn near same as day I got them? Had I known Converse was going down like it was I would've got at least 2 more pair. Bit bummed until learning Nike had actually acquired them made my day which only lasted but a day too. ~~ ALL OF THE STYLES WERE AVAILABLE FOR THE NEW YEAR. ALL EXCEPT ONE THAT IS?!!?!
Hey Weston, love the vid as always. I'd love to see you do more comparisons between high quality sneakers and the cheap counterparts. For example, Thursday just came out with the Court Sneaker...I think it's supposed to be Thursday's version of either the AF1 or a Jordan 1 Low. They're basically the same price as a Jordan 1 Low and a tiny bit pricier than standard AF1s, so it would be great to see how much Thursday improved the design. You could even compare to the Govans that you reviewed awhile back...or some other higher quality sneaks like Taft or Beckett Simonon ;)
If you have wide feet, Converse WILL cause you insane amounts of pain because they are far too narrow for modern shoes. of the like 6-8 pairs of converse I've owned that have ALL cost over $80, only 2 were actually wide enough to not cause me pain because they're just too narrow and caused so much pain crushing the front of my feet. I am obsessed with the color combination of black and green, and Converse rarely has EVER released purely black and green shoes, thankfully the 2 pair of purely black and green shoes I found by them were also wide enough to wear comfortably, but outside of that EVERY SINGLE pair of Converse is painful to wear for me because they just aren't wide enough
No offense, but the 70's were a long time ago. I don't doubt they aren't the same, but it could also be age. I'm considering getting a pair of new balance .. ugh, I'm old.
I got a pair of All Stars off the custom page about 6 year ago.I went whole hog and did contracting canvas, antiqued eyelets, a custom heel stripe monogram, and more. They still have the inside heel counter. My newer pair of black All Stars doesn't have the heel counter, but has an outside heel support in a contrasting camo finish. Both are Vietnamese. They feel about the same, but I'd consider a pair of 70s once one of these breaks down. I saw that Converse has finally added a wide option, after, what, 100-some years?
If I remember correctly Converse came out with the Chuck Taylor All Star 2 back in 2015 they had a very similar looking lining to what the normal all stars have now and they also had nikes lunarlon in the insoles. They were discontinued after a year or so and then the Chuck 70s came out which personally I still prefer the All Star 2s on foot feel. Converse also released the CX line which was going for the comfort aspect the All Star 2s had. Would be interesting to see the All Star 2s and a CX pair cut in half and compared to these two.
I just bought a pair of lugz leather hightops and they are everything converse used to be and half the price. one of the best pair of shoes I have ever had it is built great and the all rubber sole is thick
All stars were the shoes of my childhood and I wore through at least 3 pairs. But they weren’t comfortable, wearing them for a whole day of wandering around Rome wasn’t a good idea. Then I switched to vans in about 2015. But last year I bought a pair of chuck 70s with a platform sole. And they are actually my work shoes now, comfortable and more durable any other canvas shoe I have worn so far.
Great video. I was curious about 70s and probably will get them as my experiences are a super mixed bag. Us purchased lasted long time (10 years used 2-3 months a year) and had the felt on the bottom but most european bought fell apart after one season. Cracked rubber on outside where it folded. If 70s will last longer than my US bought pair I’m all for it especially that you can customize them a lot on website.
been wearing chucks my whole life just recently received a new pair but when walking on the concrete they sound like hard plastic not the smooth soft comfortable rubber sole? and were purchased at a undisclosed (reputable} retailer who of which i will not share their name so they can't sue me for defamation, but just know what to look for folks be weary and do your research! and thanks for posting video Sir! great info👍
I’d love to see you do a video on the Chuck Taylor All Star Pro’s, the ones meant for skating. My favorite thing about them is they have elastic straps to keep the tongue centered.
You should do this with the Chuck Pros, which are the skateboarding ones. It would be cool to find out if those are better than this, since they supposedly have better quality materials for their use.
I've collected about 12 different pairs of chucks in the last two years. I have the old knee highs, I have black and an olive green like platform, the lugged high tops, multiple other high tops and two pairs of low tops. The comfort level oddly varies a lot (and none of them are Chuck 70's either). Like the green platform lacks cushion that the black ones have. The lugged high tops seem to be the most comfortable to wear and feels similar to the black platforms. I've had regular high tops that were comfortable and some not. I was genuinely surprised how comfortable the knee highs were. Not really sure why there's so much variance. I would think it would be better to have the same level of cushion/comfort for each. I will add though I almost never have any issues with size. They all seem to fit just about the same.
Just ordered myself my very 1st pair of Chuck All Stars low top. I wasn't aware of the difference in quality compared to Chuck 70 until I watched this video. Anyway, I got a great deal. Paid $30 for them.
I occasionally call them chucks.. but generally, I still call them Chuck Taylor's. My best friend wore them a lot and thats what he always called them. All of his shoes were either chuck Taylor's or old Docs from before they were shit. (we've been in the punk scene for years) He passed away a couple of years ago, and I just realized that now all of my shoes are Chuck Taylor's, Doc's, or most recently Solovair's thanks to one of ur videos.
In my teens I had a pair that I wore for like 4-5 years, only reason I replaced them is cause the black color turned a really bad green. No tears or peeling of the rubber. Side effect of them, I have a problem with my foot. Doctors told me its cause those shoes were completely flat and narrow in the toe area. Being older now, I can't find comfort in any of the models they offer. I've become a Skechers wearer. Lol I do miss that pair of Converse though. Black/red All-Stars that have been discontinued I think.
I'd like to see a comparison of Van and the Vans premium because I've been seeing ads for it everywhere and I'm wondering if it's actually any better. I usually just run with Vans skate line since it's more durable and comfortable than their regular line, but if the premium is even better then I might just try those.
Great vid, would love to see an original. Also, Converse has a line unique to Japan called "Addict" which is supposedly superior to Chuck 70s (same design). Those would also be really cool to see compared to a pair of All Stars or CT70s.
I love chucks! Have you compared the 70s with the CTAS Pro skate shoes? The skate ones appear to be quite a bit more durable and comfortable in my opinion
In my country around the 1990s, the Chuck 70s design was what we had, particularly the loop stitching, which was different from the International/US counterparts. At first I thought it was like a "local" meaning made in my country and not the "official" one which was the square stitch. Our "Chuck 70s" was then replaced with the square stitch. The 70s design really looks better BUT sadly still not made or designed to be for wide feet. 😅
I really appreciate this video. I was wondering about these two shoes. sadly local stores don't seem to offer the 70s they will just offer the cheaper chucks in every color.
They're both awesome. The 70s feel like bricks after decades in the std chucks, but hours later you'll thank yourself for the added cushion. Two completely different feeling shoes, which happen to have the same name, for the most part. Love love love Chucks!!

Hopefully this comment gets some leverage as a huge Chuck wearer, so.. I think the 70s are a great sneaker on their own and worth the purchase for extra comfort and most importantly decent quality, I still find classic Chucks to look more appealing and find them somewhat comfortable if you don't mind a rather flat insole. I just ordered a pair of the Chuck Taylor All-Star US Originator from Japan (Converse aren''t owned by Nike in Japan and make their sneakers with rather high quality and comfort opposed to the cheap Chucks made now) I will be happy to report with my initial impressions of them as they hold up to 70s if not better quality while keeping the classic look and design of OG Converse. (Note: They aren't offered in wide sizes in Japan so sizing up is the only option for a more comfortable fit)
I got a pair of chuck 70's for $50 CAD and couldn't be happier, cheap as chips and definitely more comfortable then I remember my All Stars being. I also picked up a pair of leather high top platform All Stars which seem to also be more comfortable. I think the platform sole gives it more squish overall.

I clean my leather Chucks with a general purpose degreaser and a brush.
Then finish with a matt finish tire shine…. Works like magic! 👍🏼
If you’re not aware, both Converse and Vans make shoes specifically for skateboarding. So they have their basic shoes you can get from the mall. But then they have lines of shoes you can get from skate shops. I would love to see a video of you comparing them.
Umm no converse are basketball ball shoes air Jordan's are the perfect skate shoe
@ what?
R they comfortable?
I have made sooooo many footwear decisions based on your videos... thanks so much! Palladium, Thursday, Converse... all are in my shoe rotations and all because of these videos!
Chuck 70s always shred my pinky toes whereas all stars don't, thanks to this video I now see why 👏
I have been wearing Chucks for years. Since the demise of the Chuck Taylor II, I have the 70s as my favourites. I can walk all day in them and they are great for long driving sessions too. I've had Olive Green and Sangria... It might be time for a classic black and egret pair.
Great video!
Still annoyed they quit making the II so quickly. They never made it to stores in any places they were gone so fast
Noticed this on mine too
So the Chuck 70s in the video and your Chuck 70s are different?
@@vasu1197 Yes. He is reviewing the older version in this video. I have about 10 pairs of those so I am very familiar with how they are built. The current 70s are lower quality. I’ve purchased three pairs from 2024 and they are all lower quality now. No extra heel counter, no toe area reinforcement, different insoles, etc. Overall lower quality for the same price.
@@whereRbearsTeethgreat 😟 just ordered mine now I’m disappointed why do we let companies get away with this crap
Are you sure about this? because even on the Converse website the commerce photos there have no felt on the sole
How funny that you just posted this as I was looking to answer this exact question
Very cool video edit, specially 3D shoe. Great content as always.
I'm old enough to remember when Chucks were $8-10.
My first pair were purple... loved them.
It is a shame they look so good.
Chuck Taylor All Stars and anything Vans produces are torture devices.
@@roberth4395I find them very comfortable. If they were really that torturous, they wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are
@@roberth4395 I love how they look though. I'll keep wearing them. 🔥xd
There were adidas, keds, pf flyers, nike, puma during the 70s.
If i remember correctly. For a time they were 'buddies'. In the realm of husky denim anything from kmart and nerdy.
They are definitely worth all the extra money and more.
fun fact the Indonesian version of the regular All Star is all rubber outsole because its made in Indonesia and no need for reducing import tax
I could agree since I am also Indonesian
Wow! it really is constructed better, and not just a sales gimmick. Love what you do, it's really a public service. Informing people on where to spend their hard earned money.
Looking at this dissection, shoes are one of the most profitable businesses.
12:35: there is very clearly a layer of something hard looking between the outsole and insole of the Chucks that isn't on the 70's which I assume accounts for the puncture test difference. Weird you didnt notice that.
Oh yeah, the white layer on top of the light gray? Good catch! It looks like an extension of the liner material to me, or maybe canvas.
Did you find that sizing up makes you resemble Ronald McDonald?😂

I'm happy with my chuck II with Nike Lunarlon insole from 2016(came from jack purcell made in the USA since highshool).
was planning to buy chuck70, but i am a bit disappointed with the insole coz i got used to that lunarlon that came with chuck II. original jack purcell to chuck 2 made huge upgrade to comfort for me. and now going chuck 2 to chuck70 is a bit downgrade in my exp that why I personally didn't buy it.
As someone in the international trade industry, I love that you showed the HTS in this video
The editing of these videos is getting pretty damn good
What they have done is taken the old converse all star and rebranded it and upped the price. The "all star" now is a "cheap" shoe for the price that the old ones were with less quality in every single department. You love to see it.
13:40 the “chew” of choice lol 😂
When I was a high school kid in the early 70s, nobody in my area called them "Chucks" back then, we called them "Cadillacs". Sadly for me, my mom worked at Sears, so I wore Jeepers, which were not nearly as comfortable. I wear Chucks 70s today, they're comfy for casual walking.
Great overview. Now I really want to see a comparison between the Chuck 70s and PF Flyers. Next time I need a new pair of Chucks, those are what I'll be choosing between and I'd love to see a redo of this comparison.
Hey bro, I just got my first pair of Nick's work boots today. Between those and the Smugs I am leathered up! Thanks for the recommendations.
My Chuck 70s squeak soooooo bad though. 😢
They have been making these for decades and still can't make them right. I've had chinese knockoffs that don't suffer from this detachment problem.
@@Keith_TM Mine squeaked a lot from the moisture of my foot. Started wearing wool socks and it stopped squeaking for me
mine have lasted nearly 2 years now with daily wear, they have detached a bit but nothing to actually compromise the shoe, just looks beaten up. I clean them fairly regularly so idk if that helps or not. also replaced the laces because I washed the old ones with bleach and that destroys them
Consider reviewing the new clark wallabee as the design was revamped
Yes, the flatness makes them very useful as weightlifting shoes. Many excellent lifters use them for that purpose.
I find the classics extremely comfortable too
That was actually really informative and helpful..boots caught me off-guard though
i have to pairs of 70's, never had regular chuck taylor's and I'm glad i didn't bought them.
Love to see you compare a pair of made in japans as well!
When I was a teen the inside of the regular all stars was just canvas. They added that padding type material at some point. I'm 31 so I was a teen like 2006 to 2012
i had an all star when i was in high school it made me through my senior year those thing are a tank it takes me through my skating and for everyday
Wish more people cared about the PF Flyers.

In 2001 these shoes were like $19 at Kmart. If they didn't have the color you wanted, you'd get white ones and some dye.
In the late ''60s, Kmart had "Trax " versions, $3.99 for the low tops, and $4.99 for the high tops. Don't know who made them, but I played basketball in 5th grade in a pair of high tops. The good old days!

Yeah I think quality went down once Nike got a hold of em.
Their Tremont Street range is deliberately wider for that reason.

I wear both and honestly they are interchangable in everyday life. I cannot tell a difference.
Can't go wrong with a good old fashion pair of Chuck's... will always have a home in my rotation...
As somebody who wore them to play basketball in the 70s, they are not the same. I buy the medium high and they are so comfortable.
Can you explain how they used to be? And is the medium high comparable to the shoe when you played or just something you prefer right now?
No offense, but the 70's were a long time ago. I don't doubt they aren't the same, but it could also be age.
I'm considering getting a pair of new balance .. ugh, I'm old.
@@rodiona8781 yeah they only come up to the bottom of your ankle and they’re padded around the neck
Can you scratch or peel the felt off the All Star outsole to restore the traction?

Lol
I do miss that pair of Converse though.
Dude those clear red ones ❤
I would love to see a video on the CONS ERX line from the late 80's.
Those are some of Converse's wildest shoes in terms of design and tech.
You should get a set of Altama Maritime Assault Boots/Shoes. They're basically combat Converses.

You think that's cheap? 😂 They cost way less than a tenth of that to produce. Westerners get ripped off big time and still think they made a deal 😂
