Everything you need to know about Nike SB!
Nike tried to take over skateboarding and failed twice, before Sandy Bodecker arrived on the scene. With the help of the Nike Dunk, Nike SB was finally able to stick the landing, and ended up changing the world of shoes as a whole.

Skate Tool, not bottle opener.
@speeedCo big bro is back with up tp speeed with his own twist
the title is killing the video: “How a Nike Successfully Marketed to Counter Culture”
"Swingin' it's big 'ol corporate choad" I laughed, awesome. 😅
bro please do a video about BAPE and its founder Nigo.
James nerding out for 20 minutes is pure bliss in this crazy ass world.
Fr
'up to speed' vibes. Love it!
This is not nerding, it's just simping for a brand. People got brainwashed by consumerism. I could understand some fetish for some sexy shoes, but Nike? That's just cringe...
@@andan2293 Nike is one of the biggest athletic wear companies ever. Cry about it.
@@andan2293I cannot say anything
Im so happy with the success of this channel
Nah fr
I wish it were successful but it's going downhill if you check the views
@@FatTracksMusicare you actually dumb he got over half a million on his last video. If that’s falling off, then he’s doing pretty well
@@FatTracksMusicit's natural progression people originally tuned in because they wanted to see his side of the story after leaving donut and now that the donut situation has calmed down after a few months people only interested in the donut situation have stopped watching leaving only people who genuinely like the channel and it's content.
Eventually the views will settle and be steady but for now they will continue to fall but by no means is it a downfall
Me too. It isn't surprising at all tbh, James is a cool dude and the main reason I even followed donut.
The vibes on this channel are just IMMACULATE. Nice cars, fashion, streetwear, skateboarding. Hell Yeah!
Glad you enjoy it!
So real
@@SpeeedCoit’s such a departure from previous work but also so familiar.
@SpeeedCo definitely love it, your new channel is great. Can you do a video about BAPE?
Right? Every post is more stuff I can relate too 🔥🔥
I just watched a 25 minute video about skateboarding shoes. I don't skateboard. I don't watch skateboarding. I don't wear skateboarding shoes. Pumphrey, your storytelling is so fantastic that I'm excited to watch videos about topics I don't know, or care about! Can't wait to see something that's more up my alley.
The direction donut went was actually blessing. Forced you to choose yourself. Now you have something to call your own and have full control of and you’re killing it. This channel is so dope.
3 James Pumphrey's chanting Choad is exactly what I needed in my life. Had no idea till it happened.
Gave me the dumbest most hearty chuckle I've had in some time
Old up to speed James is back baby ❤
I swear James has introduced me to more things I didn’t know about but subsequently get interested in than anyone else.
Imagine wanting to get more knowledgeable about clothing from a car channel.
This is my small contribution to James’ well emotional state of being; your videos are sickk, I’m happy to see new drops
love the philosophical approach to subcultures. it brought unexpected but rewarding depth to an already enjoyable backstory.
Also, the BARS that james spit's from 21:53 to the end is crazy fire. This video is something else
Also comes from the heart because of what happened with Donut.
James giving out history lessons of things I actually love which is Cars and Fashion was such a freaking great move tbh, And I get to pick up some fashion tips as well. Much love James 🫶
So…up to Speed on James’ Dad?
Welcome back brother
The legend himself is among us again.
You
@@SpeeedColove your work guys, does this mean I have to start from Day 1?😅
@@PaganiGamingcan't wait for day two
Speeed is the most relatable channel for millennials. hands down. this content is so well written and executed. you all deserve an award. bravo. sending love from KY to the legend of Louisville
Exactly this. He knows you guys will watch videos about clothing.
James, I find your final thoughts in these videos to be very philosophical and gives me a lot to think about afterwards. Thank you for taking the time to articulate your thoughts in a easily digestible way for your audience. It doesn't go unnoticed
One thing to note is the money they paid skaters was huge. Skater-owned companies like Lakai couldn’t afford the contracts they already had agreed to and Nike stepped in and offered those guys like Koston even more than that. It was not viewed as selling out anymore and more like, “if skater owned companies can’t pay then it ok to take money getting the big corporation”
Ive never been the type of guy that would bash Nyjah, Koston, Prod etc. for taking the big check to do something they love but also the industry is in a weird spot because of that. we want to keep core/small business but only the big companies are getting enough revenue to survive. Now new balance launched the numeric line and is doing the exact same thing nike did with the SB line. Lakai just announced that they are struggling to survive because they've been at a massive financial loss for a while.
I feel like the company that did it the best was vans, they are core, they blew up, and they use their success to still pay skaters well but unfortunately not every business can get popular like vans did.
I think we are reaching a point at least for skate shoes that there is gonna be no more core companies, only the big corporations.
@ yeah it can be argued that it was good for the skaters who got the money and generally bad for core companies. éS out here charging $150 for remakes of old shoes to try and make money. I don’t know what it’s like for kids now but basically all my skate shoes were like $50 or less off whatever sales racks i could find and when i walk in skate shops now nothing is discounted
I came to Speeed from cars, but skating will always be my first love. There are honestly so many similarities between the cultures that they go together like e88's on an M3
It’s crazy how every time speeed puts up a video I feel like I gotta create something immediately after I watch it. It’s thanks to James talking about stüssy last video that I got inspired to learn how to screen print and make my own shirts with the thing I am passionate about! Thanks Speeed for making me feel like I can do anything when I watch one of your videos! ✌️
I know your intent wasn't to advertise your shirts, but if they're up for sale you should totally reply with a link or a social media page I can check it out at. I'd love to support a small business 🤙
James, I really appreciate the introspection and philosophical takes you provide at the end of these videos. Not just the history of a product/person/industry, but the insight to reflect on "what does this mean now, and for the future?"
Great video!
All of your stories are deeper because I feel your passion. Never stop.
Thanks!
I came here for car stuff but man do I love hearing about the clothes, shoes and just culture. It’s exciting to watch these videos, keep it up brother
This is exactly what I was hoping for when u started speed. I could see the inner skater in you and I needed to see the vids you would make ❤️
Yup. He knows his core demo well... Maybe not. If you are so deep you will watch him talk about clothing 2 weeks in a row, I am sorry for you.
James could make an up to speed about socks and id watch it all
... We should probably demand a socks episode, it would be outstanding
Keep up the good work, we got you.
I am here to add my vote to the pile for a episode on Socks!
Honestly I bet it would be fascinating and it's guaranteed to be entertaining.
Darn Tough ftw! Or Kirkland socks
Came to say darn tough
My old man was a skater, I still have his skateboard. I am not a skateboard person by any means, but I appreciate and respect the culture and even the beautiful artwork that goes into things like these shoes and even the boards themselves. Keep at it, this channel is destined for greatness and is just as authentic as original Nike SBs were.
Hey man as a subscriber that came from Donut, don't feel like you gotta talk about cars! Your vibe and format is what im here for! Talk about different light bulb brands if you want just bring the passion you have!
Work. Of. Art. Every single one of these videos is an absolute masterpiece. Thank you James and Jesse for sharing your passions and talents with us.
Why is you explaining something as simple as shoes so satisfying and bring such joy 😂 keep it up! Love the vid
Was torn between watching Hulu or watching James while I ate dinner. James was the right choice.
Shooooo, that's not a choice for me 🤣
I made the same decision today 😂
The intent and care with each script and each video is amazing. It somehow keeps getting better! Love you James keep doing what you love man!
Bro, I'm even entertained by your ads. Another great video! I remember seeing a pair of Nike SB's and thinking... what the hell is that? Softball? These don't look like softball cleats. Freedom looks good on you brother. Keep up the good work!
Bro. I’m so glad you left donut. You look healthier, and it’s clear that they were throttling your talent and typecasting you. I didn’t realize you had that much depth.
It actually seems like Donut limited everyone because I can’t get over how intelligent and poised you all seem on your own, speaking your truth.
This is inspiring
Grew up watching all these skaters. Love seeing this come back into the present. Thanks James!
I love this channel. James' analytical explanation of these brands and topics is what really sets him apart from most UA-camrs. Keep going at light Speeeed!
Man love the content n hope for the coming success you deserve it man love the vids n that your able to be you man.
I appreciate that!
This was so interesting. The videography was amazing. The music, perfect for the wild story. Loved everything about it.
James is the best story teller of this era!
Love this Video!!!!
short story:
Worked Nike retail 2003-2009. Wasn't a good skater but big snowboarder in norcal. Shop i rode for as teen had SB and Quickstrike account. Been rocking Nike SB since. I have a room for my shoes. 80% SB. I would write off my already discounted SBs from shop as my work wear. It was a great time.
As a lifelong skateboarder, I appreciate this episode. You guys are killing it and making great content. 😊
I didn't have James chanting "choad" on my 2024 bingo card
Should have. Lol
Classic pumphery styled videos are back, and I'm loving it!
This channel is probably the best move you've made, and it's worthy of all of the success so far, and yet to come. ❤️
Loving the content. Been on since the first video, no plans on leaving.
This new channel is awesome and I absolutely love everything you do
1:12 I see what you did there
Not to be that guy but the bottle opener on the shoe is actually a spanner for the wheels and chucks. Love you still James
This channel is so refreshing to me. Just a cool guy telling cool stories about cool stuff. I don't care what topic they have picked to talk about, ik it's gonna be a banger cuz I trust these dudes to make 'em. I really believe it's because is a true passion project!
And yah, James is looking clean and healthy.
One of my students was the son of Tim Payne, legendary skate, park, developer and former bones, brigade, member, jackass, contributor, etc. Just old school skater. We let him take a week off of school so he and his dad and their company could build a skate park on a barge and east river on York for the relaunch of Nike SB, he had so many sick stories about skating New York City when it came back to Florida.
Used to work for Nike and SB was a HUGE portion of my work. SB Sneakerheads are cats of a VERY different swoosh.
Before travis Scott anyway
@@jonathanwiswell3365 Yeah, but I left before he got his cringe stained hands on 'em.
This channel has quickly grown to be one of my favourites on the platform. Also have to give a shoutout to the Nike Blazers. Used to love skating in those back in the day
He hasn’t failed to make a video that appeals to me yet! I really appreciate the attention to detail in the scripts, humor, and creative editing James. Keep making great videos James!
So I'm just liking instantly from now on. James you keep talking and educating us. I would listen to you teach physics and calculus. Your voice is iconic.
I love when he puts these videos together. Can’t wait for the Supreme episode. 🤙
Massive sneaker guy here.
I was working in a skate store during the silver and pink box era. Crazy to see how much influence NSB had on streetwear and the sneaker game as a whole. I feel like this era paved the way for collabs in sneakers and streetwear.
Watched twice. Great job James & Jesse.
my most anticipated speed episode yet 😍
As a skateboarder, one of the biggest things was getting your own special line of kicks, much the same with getting your own signature board. If you could get yourself signature shoes and a signature board, you were considered a king amongst skateboarders because that proved you had the skill to turn heads and be noticed.
Loving the diversity in topics on this channel.. I love this guy I could watch him talk about anything
This is so well done and visually so appealing! I was glued to the screen ❤
10:27 I spat my drank💀💀💀💀
I speak on behalf of the skating community when I say, Hell yeah.
No you don't. Nike sucks.
Please make more videos like this . Clothes , game consoles , cars or whatever else is just cool and very entertaining to learn about brands
These videos need more views! These videos are gold, and we need James to keep making these.
I have the sb chron and it's a pretty honest product. But Surely skating and mainstream don't fit so well together...in Nike they know it well. Nice video bro
I don’t care about Nike or skateboarding. I’m just here for James.
You’ll pay for that
I have never had any luck with Nike shoes. And I've worn a ton of different brands. I can destroy a set in no time flat. So comfort is really the only measure I go by.
I never skated but I did like skate shoes for a few years. That's about as close as I get, but this is still fascinating.
Dude I've never been interested in streetware or skating or anything, but you have made me interested. Thanks for doing your thing and making yourself happy, and in doing so making us happy
22:47 The love for money kills the culture. Don't be a sellout is my opinion.
Man. I absolutely love the little just... talking on the wider stuff of things at the end of the videos.
I am just loving these videos. Absolutely killing it James.
Sooo people would say im lying but the SB in Nike SB actually means Sandy Bodecker not Skateboarding
Everyone thinks the sb stands for skateboarding but according to Paul Rodriguez a longtime Nike sb skateboarder the sb was the creators initials. Sandy Bodecker.
23:48 This why ur here
HAWK TUAH MENTIONED ‼️‼️‼️‼️
A thousand likes to you man! Amazing content. So glad with speeeeeeed
love how you started with nike sb, and how you ended it with the evolution of subcultures and mainstream adaptation.
Only guy ill watch his ad placements for. We're so back in the informative comedy world
The channel makes so much sense, congrats James, keep it up
Thanks James, loved this episode. As a long time SB collector I didn't learn anything new but was good to see your passion on the subject too. I have about 60 pairs of SB dunks. It was flipping some of these during the last hype period that bought me my car. Loving the new channel, keep it up.
That's awesome. How many did you sell how much was your car ? I'm thinking of doing something similar
@@dylanp9211 I don't remember too much, probably made it sound better than it was. I got insurance payout on old car and sold all my duplicates and stuff I didn't really want to keep to make a big upgrade. I'd guess around 20-25 pairs. Few hype pairs like dog walkers, what the P-Rods, civilists and a pair of Clivers
I literally could not care less about shoes, and yet I am glued to the screen. Very happy to see you cover whatever you feel like.
As a sneakerhead and bigggg SB collector, I loved this one. I could listen to you nerd out all day long man. Hope to see a Jordan video at some point with the different collabs and how currently the market is not doing so great making them more attainable than ever.
I can’t believe how well your channel is doing and i feel like with content like this its just going to get bigger and bigger and more popular and mainstream…. Kinda fitting for the topic at hand
This is rapidly turning into my favorite channel 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
This channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites
Yessssss
YYYESSSSSSSS
I loved this story. I've never liked Nike much, but this was really interesting. My industry should watch this. Nobody actually talks to the audience they hope to appeal to anymore. People just assume they know. This is the story of how to do it. How to crack a category. How to be relevant.
Great story ❤
Kudos for the sponsor segment. Man actually kept me entertained
I'm kinda low-key glad dude has his own channel. I was always interested in his personality more than anyone else's on well....any car show. He brings the funny when you know he ain't in funny mood. I respect that.
with every episode i´m happier that (up to) speeed is back. bring it on guys!
Dude you have such a great and genuine way of expressing concepts. From 21:40 to 23:08 was excellent.
James, your endings, how you go into more about the item your talking about and like how you talked about the culture here and shaping it... Seriously, you are one of the best story tellers and why Up to Speed was always my fav segment and what got me into Donut early on.... since you, Jobe, Jerry left, I havent been back... I am now following Speeed and Big Time!!! You guys are all amazing and the new owners of Donut have no idea how much they ruined it...
The level of attention, and entertainment that goes into these videos is amazing. Loving the variety of topics, and their impacts on the car and/or street cultures they appeal to. Way to make deep dive nerd outs so damn compelling, James!🤘🏼
It’s awesome to see James be able to expand to show he’s a journalist about so much more than cars. Dude is a whole cultural vibe.
It’s also awesome to see that in 3 days, Speeed, big time and donut all dropped fire videos, and I see a lot of the same names in the comments. Great to see all 3 thriving doing their thing.
James, I honestly never thought I’d watch a 25 minute video about shoes. You’re the only person on UA-cam that made cry when you talked about Dale Earnhardt. You have so much passion and heart and I’m very happy for your success. It would mean the world if you talk about Ken Block. You’re the only person that can tell his story the way you do. I really hope you consider this, love you chode. #KB43VER
That closing speech was AMAZING! Excelent writing as always!!
I’ve always been more into cars than fashion but the way you talk about everything has me hooked I love the extent of your research and the passion behind you presenting it to us
I love learning with James . It’s fun
I'd be honestly be interest in seeing how James and team does the research on all of this stuff. There has to be a lot of crap to go through to get all the correct information for this stuff.
I'm proudly a part of that neeeww audience of yours. Your storytelling and insights are on point, and I really like your sense of humor. Thanks for the content
one of the very very few channels where i will happily watch the advertisements he does.
I am so grateful for you, your humor, and your willingness to share your passions with the world. Thank you for keeping me up to speed over the last 7 years!
This channel is a work of art.
I freaking love where the channel is going
Love it when you do these funny bits, like the board meetings or spell words wrong. Your new format is sick, like when you talks about the bigger picture at the end. Greetings from a big fan in Germany
The love that goes in to these videos is just amazing and inspiring for Me and many , Gracias James !!!!!!
The James we love is fully back ❤
