I love the entire vintage Halloween athstetic! It began when I was a child and found Halloween cards my Dad had received as a child of the early 40s. On my bucket list is to host a Halloween party with all the vintage (real and re-pros) I can get my hands on or create.
This was so interesting because when I saw the picture, I had in my mind how I would have made it and it was nothing like how you made it. This would be cool to see how a few diffent DIYers solved the process problem.
I THINK I would probably make a back-closing orange vest, attach the triangles (double sided with interfacing, same for pumpkins) to orange bias tape and then sew the tape onto the bottom of the vest at the waistline. Wear it over a blouse, add a tie at the neck and tie the tape at the waist to close since the cape will cover the back.
You worked so hard this month Rachel, you deserve a lil break! Also, the amount of in-the-way Frodo in this was amazing haha. I think the outfit turned out great, especially considering the time crunch! You could potentials back the spikey pieces with wire like you did with your ship sails to give them some shape?
Love this concept! These costumes are so cute! No shade, just trying to be helpful. It might be easier for you to buy a block pattern, butterick or vogue has one, and that would give you a basic top and skirt to start with that you could alter and work off that.
I think it turned out great! I see myself in you when I was first learning how to sew, I was self taught as well. I don't know if there's any chance you'll see this in all the comments, but I wanted to thank you. I only discovered your channel fairly recently, but your videos have given me a lot of joy. I'm newly and unexpectedly self employed due to a combination of my business going viral and losing my job a week later, so I spend 99% of my time sitting at home sewing. It's been nice to have your videos on in the background and feel not so isolated, almost like having someone there crafting with me. I know how stupid that sounds, but it can get very lonely. I think you have an amazing personality and your style is stunning! So yeah... Thanks for all the effort you put into your content. ❤️
Gah, you actually look so adorable! Maybe it's not perfect, but I think anyone who's been watching your videos for a while, can see your sewing skills improving. I'm honestly more than a little bummed that this is the end of your Halloween series, because it was actually so fun.
Gurl, I can't tell you how many Halloween nights I've spent frantically trying to finish my costume! I've definitely sewed or glued myself into garments (sometimes while in the car on the way to a party). This turned out great for only 3 days, no pattern and thrifted material. KUDOS!
You've been such an inspiration for me to try my hand at bigger clothing crafting projects, I usually just stick to sewing on patches on my sweatshirts and creating looks with already made clothes, but lately I've been really interested in actually making costumes and garments thanks to you and Bernadette Banner! I have so far successfully made detachable sleeves for my renaissance fair outfit (imagine how the people at Joann's looked at me when I told them that... complete confusion), and my biggest project yet, a cloak to be one of the three fates for Halloween/Samhain! It was my first time ever using a sewing pattern and was complete madness, ultimately I just disregarded the directions and started putting it together like a fabric puzzle; but it all came together :) I appreciate that you show your struggles and are documenting your learning and progress, it's really helped me gain confidence to go forth and create as well!
You're the cutest thing ever! I love this festive outfit! I decided to keep celebrating Halloween over this weekend... I don't know how you get anything done with Frodo there, he's a complete crack up!
Your sweet Pup and you make me smile and chuckle and sometime get a real good laugh.... someone understands what my life is like with dog with cat. Thank you for sharing your talents.
Very creative! I wouldn't be surprised to learn that, in the 1920's, substantial portions of the costume were constructed using much cheaper materials, including crepe paper! That pleated cape is an effect that can be achieved with crepe paper. We were wearing crepe paper costumes in the fifties: fire, moisture, rips were our enemies and it was rare for costumes to survive the night. On reflection, it's amazing that so many kids survived Halloween. You improved upon the idea.
I'm laughing at you at every corner. 😅 You're so funny and witty. I also love how you make your pin curls look fashionable 😭 This was amazeballs, you're amazeballs, *chef's kiss* 🙌
I totally understand feeling burnt out. One year I did 31 days of Halloween makeup tutorials and it nearly killed me. But I didn’t miss a single day! I loved your posts on Instagram!
We made armor for a play with some felt we "shellacked" with watered down Elmer's glue and the felt was stretched over plastic body molds. Came out amazing, but yes, felt can go hard with water. Add a bit of glue that dries clear and it will become like armor. I know there is a whole bunch more technology-like stuff to make armor out of NOW, but - those choices weren't actually around (invented yet) when I went to college, so... glue. felt. armor. Go forth to battle!
@@a.k.v.3042 I may have to try that for a cosplay. I went to art college too, the cheap tricks and 'hacks' we did for stuff that you can now just buy were amazing. I miss those days... When life was simpler and pva glue could do everything.
Amy Vintage in a pinch you can set your makeup with talc or make hair look less greasy etc talc is amazing Apparently also carcinogenic but sacrifices had to be made sometime
It turned out fantastic!! And don't worry about how long it took, the first rule of sewing is that if you're making something for any event, you WILL finish it just moments/ minutes/seconds before said event. It's the law 🤷🧵
The shot of you at your sewing machine when you were talking about your cape with the leaves falling outside in the background was sweet as hell. The costume was neat!
Congrats on your first pair of sewing scissors! And you're sewing experience may be limited at the moment, but your instincts are good. Listen to them.
Oh my god, I am so happy that you know what Over The Garden Wall is! Maybe you could make a vintage version of their costumes. That would be absolutely amazing! Love your sense of humor ( makes me laugh every time)!💛🎃
This is amazing! I am very much a fan of 50s fashion and lately the lack of awesome dresses available for sale has motivated me to sew my own outfits. You sewing your own vintage outfits is so inspiring and it motivates me to be creative and sew my own dresses. Thank you for creating fashionable outfits that aren’t vanilla in the slightest!
I really love the colour contrast and the silhouette! If you ever ever did a do-over series with the additions you mention in your conclusion - this would be a fun one! ✨💛✨

We need a hair scarf tutorial 🤷🏻♀️
The finished dress is so pretty 🐶💖🌸🦇🎃
I also like how you talk about what you could possibly do better but all of your outfits are still amazing 🐶💖🌸🦇🎃
"My arm pits are too girthy" I feel that...
Thank you for showing this craft, even if it's not your favourite, it's super important to see creative processes!
Gah, you actually look so adorable! Maybe it's not perfect, but I think anyone who's been watching your videos for a while, can see your sewing skills improving. I'm honestly more than a little bummed that this is the end of your Halloween series, because it was actually so fun.
Wait real actual real fabric scissors??? Wow you like so professional. Give Frodo some scritches from me xx
I read "scritches" as sacrifices and I was very concerned
Sarah Ackerson yes no that would be bad hehe
Gurl, I can't tell you how many Halloween nights I've spent frantically trying to finish my costume! I've definitely sewed or glued myself into garments (sometimes while in the car on the way to a party). This turned out great for only 3 days, no pattern and thrifted material. KUDOS!
Thank goodness I’m not the only one in denial about Halloween ending😂🥰🎃
Halloween never ends
The blooper reel on this one makes me so genuinely happy
You're the cutest thing ever! I love this festive outfit! I decided to keep celebrating Halloween over this weekend... I don't know how you get anything done with Frodo there, he's a complete crack up!
Yes! My go to has always been Goodwill and when I was introduced to Savers I was disappointed at the high cost for the poor quality.
Your sweet Pup and you make me smile and chuckle and sometime get a real good laugh.... someone understands what my life is like with dog with cat.
Thank you for sharing your talents.
I love it!!! You look ready to be in a Tim Burton movie 🖤🖤🖤🎃🎃🎃
I also love how you make your pin curls look fashionable 😭
This was amazeballs, you're amazeballs, *chef's kiss* 🙌
I totally understand feeling burnt out. One year I did 31 days of Halloween makeup tutorials and it nearly killed me. But I didn’t miss a single day! I loved your posts on Instagram!
*Hot tip* if you wet felt... It goes hard.... Ooohhheeeeerrrr
I found this out accidentally by dropping my tiny felt owl I saw sewing into my tea....
Amy Vintage I am addicted to the thrill of finding a hack that works. So, I get a lot of “You know, you can go online and get . . .”
@@llamasugar5478 the only other useful hack Ive ever found is putting talc on my lashes to fill them out. I don't know why it works. But it does lol
Amy Vintage in a pinch you can set your makeup with talc or make hair look less greasy etc talc is amazing
Apparently also carcinogenic but sacrifices had to be made sometime
It turned out fantastic!! And don't worry about how long it took, the first rule of sewing is that if you're making something for any event, you WILL finish it just moments/ minutes/seconds before said event. It's the law 🤷🧵
Mr. Frodo was extra lovey in this video!
The shot of you at your sewing machine when you were talking about your cape with the leaves falling outside in the background was sweet as hell. The costume was neat!
Cute! You kinda look like an over the garden wall character
Edit: posted this just before you said it yourself! 😸
Unrelated, but your house looks so cute and cozy. And ik this is a year ago, so you may have moved, but it's a whole warm aesthetic!
Congrats on your first pair of sewing scissors! And you're sewing experience may be limited at the moment, but your instincts are good. Listen to them.
❤️❤️❤️
making costumes solely based off of illustrations is my favorite method cause it means I don't need patterns!
Its always spooky season hehe! Great vid I’m always admirative of your skills !
Perfectly adorable! I love our free style craftiness! You look great in it! It is cute!
I thought she was gonna say *“rise and shine”* when she put the spiky skirt thingy on her face
im so glad my dog isnt the only one who turns away from my kisses
the earl of gray I never heard of that, maybe your dog just thinks you’re ugly
Oh my god, I am so happy that you know what Over The Garden Wall is! Maybe you could make a vintage version of their costumes. That would be absolutely amazing! Love your sense of humor ( makes me laugh every time)!💛🎃
"When you're watching this it's the day after Halloween"
me remembering it's Feb 28th: Yup, just a *few* days after Halloween
Me remembering it's Jan 23: well time doesn't exist anymore anyways
This is amazing! I am very much a fan of 50s fashion and lately the lack of awesome dresses available for sale has motivated me to sew my own outfits. You sewing your own vintage outfits is so inspiring and it motivates me to be creative and sew my own dresses. Thank you for creating fashionable outfits that aren’t vanilla in the slightest!
Every season can be spooky season if you play your cards right😉😎😅
I think it looks super cute and your naturally vintage look compliments it! Happy Halloween!
Of course Frodo forgave you! A pet's love lasts forever ❤️
21:49 KILLED MEH! 🤣🤗 I cannot with this adorable floof loop 🧡
Hello! 👋🏻 I’m early! Yes extend that spooky season! 🥰🎃🖤✨🍁
I really love the colour contrast and the silhouette! If you ever ever did a do-over series with the additions you mention in your conclusion - this would be a fun one! ✨💛✨
HEY. DID YOU KNOW THAT SAVERS HAS 50% OFF EVERYTHING ON MONDAYS.
YOU PROBABLY KNEW. BUT YEAH.
I just saw the 20s costumes just the other day. Look, here you are showing how to accomplish the very one I liked. Too late for this year but 2020 here I come. Always enjoy your videos.
I've never been this early! 🎃🎃🎃
Heehee hi!!
@@rachelmaksy loved the whole look! I think this might be one of my favorites!
I'm watching this video in July of 2021 because why not? When I saw the shoes you eventually painted orange I laughed out loud. I had those exact same shoes! I donated them about 2 years ago. Wouldn't it be ah-mazing if they actually made to to your.Savers?! Love your videos, love your vibe, enjoy watching you so much! Thanks!
I had to put a lock on my fabric scissors so no one use them
Every time you craft I have the urge to go sew an outfit but I have no time or a sewing machine. you look fabulous I love it.
Savers is getting so expensive!!! Make me sad 😢😢😢 I used to get everything there
Its because thrift shopping is in vogue due to its popularity on the internet so even thrift shops are pricing high.
Thrift shopping being so mainstream now is causing so many places to hike up their prices. It's so sad.
I started shopping at Savers because I learned about it here on Rachel's channel. In that two years their prices have gone up so high. Goodwill isn't much better. At least savers has coupons
Value Village (our Savers) and Goodwill are insanely expensive! $8 for a F21 top that probably costed $5 new?! Heck naw. Stick with charity shops run by little old ladies. Best bet. 😆
