Rachel, you are a breath of fresh air in the sewing community. Not afraid to be seen to not know things and to try something new. It has helped me to be less afraid of just giving more complicated sewing a whirl.
The final look is so perfect from the back, it honestly looks like a scene from the movie. Then she turned around and it felt like one of those gifs where they photoshop someone else's head into a movie scene. I love it!
This awesome dress aside - kneepads while scrabbling on the floor cutting out patterns are a freaking revelation! (But also the dress is pretty and I'm feeling all inspired and now I wanna sew stuff again - first time in literally 2 years).
I’m always amazed how you end up looking like the characters in the end! 😱 About gaping necklines: mock ups are the worst but super helpful in this situation! If you notice the gap early enough you can add and close the dart on the pattern, this way you’ll “reduce” the length of your neckline and prevent it from gaping in your final garment! And since you’re taking the excess away before cutting your fabric is going to be invisible on the final garment 💖 About joining bodice and skirt: Don’t think there’s really a good or bad way of doing it... what you did with this project is just fine. Sometimes we forget that we have to join our pieces together and we just make the bodice close on the front and the skirt on the back (opsss not that I’m talking from experience, I won’t admit that I did this SEVERAL times 👀) So we have to keep that in mind when we’re planning our final garment and change the placements of things beforehand if the style of the dress allows for it of course! For this dress I can’t really think of a better way to join them, I think this style (with the buttoned front bodice) works better with really petite figures that can get away just with slipping it on from the front opening 🤔 Otherwise you would need to change the design a little bit and add an overlapping seam on the front, to mimic what you did on the bodice, and let a couple of inches near the waist unstitched, add hook and eyes to close it (so it won’t flap around) to create a slit in the front that will help you get in the garment I hope I explained myself well,m enough, English it’s not my first language sorry 😅
Troubleshooting tip: regarding the bust issue where the darts went in. I’ve noticed sometimes with clothes the “problem area” isn’t really where the problem is. Looking at some movie stills, since Keira is uh less busty (what’s the nice way to say flat chested?) I think the way to get your dress bodice to match hers would be to add fullness at the princess seam below the bust, rather than above at the edge. Idk, I’m NO expert, but I have seen that help in my own makes. Love the video, and I’m quite tempted to make me one too, one of these days 😁 that skirt is amazingly awesome and swooshy
"And so none of the Hertfordshire ladies could please you, Mr. Darcy? Not even the famous Miss Bennets?" I prefer the BBC series to the film. Great work on the dress though. :)
Haven't even watched it yet, but had to upvote for old fashioned cat talk and the content checking out :D *must mention how my cats are actually lovely not to feel guilty*
Just like my sister's new kitten. I had to house sit last week and that was her behavior if she wasn't napping or eating. Absolute sweetheart and cute as a button otherwise.
Her cat may want to play, more specifically than violence (sort of the same difference, really). It's hard to tell what exactly they want--especially when you don't have them on an eat, sleep, play, repeat schedule, lol 😅.
Corpus Hermeticum let me guess you’re probably of the opinion that Selena Gomez from wizards of waverly place is superior to Hannah Montana, and other such politically profound insights
Cat’s Costumery here on UA-cam also recreated this dress and she solved the closure with a sort of asymmetrical dogleg thing. The skirt and bodice are attached across the back and half of the front, and the other half of the skirt buttons at the side. I’m doing a pretty poor job of explaining this so just check out her video
Just saw this for the first time and after several weeks of binge-watching past Rachels, I am more impressed than ever that this fresh-faced and adorable woman can change herself into any number of our favorite heroes, including this very convincing and exotic Keira lookalike. Rachel, I truly admire you and your ability to futz around until a costume makes sense.
Your outfit turned out great and it looks amazing! I think the separates are a wonderful idea! There is a way to do that closure for a dress. I have seen in a video called "Making Elizabeth Bennet's dress from Pride & Prejudice, part II" by Cat's Costumery. The closure is at the 16:30 mark (if you're interested). Great work, Rachel!
I just want you to know I'm quite obsessed with you. I feel at home here in a way I have never found on UA-cam. Thank you for sparking my confidence to actually start dressing vintage after so many years of thinking about it but being too nervous and concerned. Feel inspired 😍
I told my mom this week how this was my favorite dress in the whole movie. I've been researching and mentally making a pattern for this all week. This is Amazing, Thank You!
Cat's Costumery did a 2 part video on this dress about a month ago too, she had a neat solution for the waist fit. I'm not very good at articulating sewing, but basically part of her skirt was loose while the rest was connected to the bodice, and that way she could have a front and side close.
110% here for this. The 2005 can be an absolute masterpiece AND the 1995 can also be incredibly good. You don't have to choose, you can have it all! You did an amazing job and I would LOVE to see more Austen outfits/styles in the future.
Thank you for making my day. I gave up sewing 15 years ago, but your videos have brought me to life again. So real and refreshing you are my new favorite.
I recently determined that I wanted to make the dress from that movie when Lizzie visits the Pemberley. I want it to be my prom dress; however, that may not happen based on the current circumstances. I still want to make the dress though :)
Don't let current circumstances get you down. Maybe you can't afford it??? But you can always plan to make it - find a pattern at a thrift shop or draft up a pattern and make a mock up out an old sheet. You will find an occasion to wear it even if it's not your prom.
When the thunderstorm hit I really hoped you'd say "Now she'll have to stay the night exactly as I predicted..." But you're Lizzie, of course, so I said it for you 😂😂😂
@serendipidus1 Sure the dresses all din't look the same, and fashion was not always followed by the poor- they'd reuse and refashion the dresses from previous fashions, but making a new dress so far from any fashion of the time probably wouldn't happen. And in addition to that the Bennets were not poor- despite what the 2005 will have you believe. They were part of the landed gentry, and though they might have been poor in the eyes of people like the Darcys and Bingleys they were by no means poor as to the standard meaning of the word. So odds are, they'd have fairly fashionable clothes.
@serendipidus1 Yeah, the 2005 movie overall isn't great for historical accuracy or literary accuracy, but people who don't care about that really like it! Empire waists was all the rage, so it doesn't sit quite right in time even though admittedly it is a pretty dress
I've loved seeing more of your cat lately. Also, Cat's Costumery recently did a more historical version of this dress and showed an interesting method of joining the bodice and the skirt.
One tip for the bust dart fix (if you use the same pattern again). It's a little hard to describe in words, but here we go. -On the pattern, draw a straight line from the area on the neckline that's popping out to the edge of the princess seam (doesn't matter too much where it lands). -Next, cut on that line from the neckline until the seam line, leaving just a tiny bit attached like a hinge. -Overlap the edges at the top by however much you need. For instance, if you pinch the excess together so it fits well and there's 1 inch of extra fabric, overlap the pattern by an inch. This technique usually works best in smaller amounts, like less than 1.5 inches, but there's no harm in trying to do more! And if you have the time and patience, whipping up a quick mockup to test out if it fits is super helpful. Hope this made sense!
I think I about cried when the music started playing and the screen went into “cinema mode”. I’ve seen this movie so many times I could quote the entire thing in my sleep 😍 you looks so beautiful as Lizzy. That wig was SPOT ON. I MUST know where you got it. Something something my poor nerves!
Sorry if someone has said this already! There is a side opening on the skirt of the original dress, like a placket at the back, but instead to the left front at the beginning of the pleating (where it would be hidden and not easily spotted.) So essentially the front wasn't attached to the skirt so she can unbutton bodice, and skirt front to get in and out easy. There is an image I saw where she's talking Mr. Wickham where I spotted it. Love this film too and really enjoyed your video!
Re: the wonderfully weird closure on this dress, Cat's Costumery made this dress a while back (ua-cam.com/video/6cmB3z-JlGE/v-deo.html) and had to do all kinds of unusual complicatedness to make it work! She found what appeared to be a historically accurate way such a thing would have been achieved, but to be honest I think separates is the way to go here! Excellent work :)
"I must tell you that I love, I love (pauses as if to sneeze) I love you." Homie same, when I first watched this on DVD when I was younger I was so instantly obsessed that I immediately re-started it as soon as the credits rolled. This was just the video I needed today, thank u
AMAZING! I too love the 2005 version. The music is so wonderful. I used to watch it multiple times a week when I was in college to fall asleep to. While I love your gorgeous red hair, I do have to say that that shade of brown really suits you as well!
This particular version of Pride and Prejudice opened a new world to me: the world of period dramas and of the books they are based on. So, even if it isn't the most accurate version I love it and will always enjoy it. There, I said it.
I don't have any seasons here but summer sucks. It's even hotter than it usually is here, and it's gross, humid, sticky, and overall a bad season. Love the ice cream and the swimming though.
I hate summer sooo much. Just the thought of sitting perfectly still, not moving a muscle.... and still sweating profusely and looking like you just stepped out of the shower. Cringe!!!
Rewatching a bunchhhh of your videos in 2022 and always love how you create and execute your ideas, provide the best jokes, and cute Frodo content-I just all around love your videos. NOW, I must say in the wrap up section especially you look like Millie Bobbie Brown!!! I think it's the upper lip situation =D. Your dress turned out beautifully and it really is SUCH a good movie. Great work!!!
Beat the heat hack: I was volunteering at Veterans Picnic a few years ago and I was literally melting in the heat. A sweet little old lady came up to me and told me to shove a baggie of ice down the front of my shirt. She said she had been doing this for years. Being desperate, I tried it. HOLY MOLY!! It instantly cooled me off and I have used this hack since when it is super hot.
💙 Fully embrace your cooling method.❄Ice in a baggie is fine, but it can also💧melt💧all over you (which can also help you cool off). Like to use the smaller blue ice bar. (The one that is about the size of soap.) You just have to get 3-4 from dollar store, so you can rotate them as they thaw out. When lounging inside, I bring out the big guns🔫. Powerade bottle frozen w/ice. Nothing more refreshing 🌬 than cuddling w/one on a ☀️scorching🔥 hot🌡day.👍😎🤙
🐝 In lieu of ice, a very quick fix is to hold your wrists under a running faucet. Cooling down the pulse points works. I’m grateful to the person who taught me this.
Yyyyeeessssss. Another person on the 2005 P&P train. I love the movie.. It may be my favorite movie even if it's not as acuarate as other versions. This dress always stands out as being such a perfect fit for Keira Knightley. You look gorgeous in it. I can live vicariously through you and your videos so I thank you.
Me: Personally, I thought the 1995 mini-series version of Pride and Prejudice was bett- * gets kicked in face by Rachel * Also me: Ok, you win. I think the fix to your gape-y neckline problem would be to re-draft the front bodice pattern piece so that the shoulder seam is shifted slightly inward (toward the neck) and making the V-neck edge just slightly more curved inward (toward the side of the neck). The pattern would look like the neckline had a slightly more scooped shape, but once you tried it on, it would have the V-shape you're going for. I don't know if my description made any sense (it would be MUCH easier to show you by drawing it) but I hope it helps! Keep up the sewing! ~Darla
Watching you crawl about on the floor, makes my lower back hurt! Love the knee pads!! Good idea. It never fails, whenever you place cloth and pattern on the floor, Frodo stomps across it or lies down on it. I have a similar problem, as my cat likes to do the same thing. Fur babies love to see what we are doing, and get involved! I was delighted to see that your dress came out well! The frolicking in the field was lovely! I always enjoy the out takes, too! Thank you for sharing your projects with us!! Stay safe! ~Janet in Canada
I was literally yelling at the screen that you should keep the two pieces separate, so I’m glad you heard me through the gulf of space and time that separates us and took my advice. Combining separate pieces to look like a single dress is a very period strategy and one I wish modern clothing used more often. Makes pieces more versatile and easy to alter.
About the gaping at the neckline; I believe I had this same issue with a tunic I made for a client years ago. The problem was only apparent when she tried on the finished piece, so it was too late to change the pattern at that point. I believe what I did was pinch the excess away at the shoulder seam - might be worth a try! It would give a weird shoulder line on the flat pattern, but should look okay with everything sewn together.
Yes yes yes! You did such a great job! I was also excited to see your process because I was watching this while making a shirt for a busty friend, and we had the same gapping problem with it and couldn't get any dart shapes to work! We realized after many frustrating attempts to shape it, that if you take the shirt up at the shoulder seam in a sort of dart shaped angle, it totally fixes it!
Rachel! I'm constantly blown away by your ability to transform your facial features with what certainly seems like a minimal amount of makeup (plus maybe a wig when necessary) and never failing to achieve an incredible resemblance to the person whose features you've set out to recreate! Long story short (too late!) You totally nailed your transformation into Keira Knightly as Lizzie Bennet! Now, THAT, my friends, is true artistry!
holy crap can we just appreciate how good her make up skills are? Her face looked so much more like Keira Knightley's. When she put on the wig my jaw just dropped :o
Oh my goodness you absolutely nailed the makeup look! It was so freaky once you'd finished the eyes to have sudden flashes of Keira Knightley and the little lip tricks really sealed the deal! I actually also really enjoy that you kept them as separates because now they're just wardrobe staples and you can keep a little bit of Lizzie with you in everyday life.

I love fridays because Fridays are when we all get to hang with friend Rachel for 15ish minutes and in these times, pretending to have friends is almost like having real friends.
I love it!
* sees sweaty armpit * "DoEs ThAt TeMpT yOu Mr. DaRcY?!" Followed by the beautiful montage... just perfection!
You did such an amazing job!
I love the 2005 Pride and Prejudice!!! I used to watch it so many times I could talk along with all the dialogue haha The final outcome is beautiful!
Heehee yes!!! That's me and Moulin Rouge as well 😂😂
does anyone else think she totally looked liked natalie portman after doing that eye makeup trick? thats not make up but wizardry.
But it's supposed to be Keira Knightly 👀
@@darlene3d lmaooooo
I saw it immediately !
But Kiera Knightly was Princess Amadala's (aka Natalie Portman) decoy in Star Wars Phantom Menace so she's no too far off.
@@sunnydoom2726 came here to say that lol
I don't often laugh out loud at things but the armpit "mistah DAHcy" bit has KILLED ME
This awesome dress aside - kneepads while scrabbling on the floor cutting out patterns are a freaking revelation! (But also the dress is pretty and I'm feeling all inspired and now I wanna sew stuff again - first time in literally 2 years).
I’m always amazed how you end up looking like the characters in the end! 😱
About gaping necklines: mock ups are the worst but super helpful in this situation! If you notice the gap early enough you can add and close the dart on the pattern, this way you’ll “reduce” the length of your neckline and prevent it from gaping in your final garment! And since you’re taking the excess away before cutting your fabric is going to be invisible on the final garment 💖
About joining bodice and skirt: Don’t think there’s really a good or bad way of doing it... what you did with this project is just fine. Sometimes we forget that we have to join our pieces together and we just make the bodice close on the front and the skirt on the back (opsss not that I’m talking from experience, I won’t admit that I did this SEVERAL times 👀)
So we have to keep that in mind when we’re planning our final garment and change the placements of things beforehand if the style of the dress allows for it of course!
For this dress I can’t really think of a better way to join them, I think this style (with the buttoned front bodice) works better with really petite figures that can get away just with slipping it on from the front opening 🤔
Otherwise you would need to change the design a little bit and add an overlapping seam on the front, to mimic what you did on the bodice, and let a couple of inches near the waist unstitched, add hook and eyes to close it (so it won’t flap around) to create a slit in the front that will help you get in the garment
I hope I explained myself well,m enough, English it’s not my first language sorry 😅
Well... English is my not my first language either and i would LOVE to speak it as good as you do !! ^ ^
@@elisedasvin170 thank you so much! 😭
Your English is fine, perhaps better than some people who speak English as their first language. No need to apologize😊
That stripe dress she wears when she visits Darcy’s home is my absolute dream 😭😭😭
Same!! That and the one she wears to the ball at Netherfield are my absolute favorites.
I wish I could own her entire wardrobe to wear on the regular. 😍

Haha I just finished watching the movie!
Has anyone read the book if so how many chapters and pages is it? Also is there an audiobook?
The makeup on this one really did do an eerie transformation. Strong resemblance to the actress.
"And so none of the Hertfordshire ladies could please you, Mr. Darcy? Not even the famous Miss Bennets?" I prefer the BBC series to the film. Great work on the dress though. :)
Thank you love!!! It's definitely better in terms of staying truer to the book but 2005 is EYE CANDY ✨✨✨✨

The cat is just like “mother... mother, I crave violence”
Haven't even watched it yet, but had to upvote for old fashioned cat talk and the content checking out :D
*must mention how my cats are actually lovely not to feel guilty*
I want the life she's having, she feels so cozy and she looks like she's genuinely having fun with the things she's doing.
That pattern was the one my mother used to make my prom dress my junior year of high school! 1980
I love it so much!

"Hit me right in the aesthetic" is now my favorite thing you've ever said and it would be so great on your merch.
Absolutely would buy merch that says get cozy and read a book like it's 1802.
I love this version of Pride & Prejudice. I think it's the best one and I watch it all the time too.
Oh my gosh you are so sweet 😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your sewing is really improving! You can definitely see how much you've learned- keep it up!
Thank you so much 😭😭❤️❤️❤️ still a lot to learn but it's funny how you learn how to problem solve the more stuff you make 😂
Omg you got it exactly. Like when you're frolicking at the end, you look SO much like her, just wow
As someone who sews, her rolling about the floor in agony during the cutting process was the single most relatable thing I've seen all week
When I saw that teaser in your stories, I got SO EXCITED when I realized it would be Lizzie Bennet's brown dress! A true dream dress 👗💕
Heehhehee🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️
I initially misread the title as “Lizzie Borden” and I was both delighted and bewildered. This is absolutely delightful c:
But where's the hatchet?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who did this, haha

Pride and Prejudice and Manslaughter
I love that dress too! Up top ✋
Make the dress!
Don't let current circumstances get you down. Maybe you can't afford it??? But you can always plan to make it - find a pattern at a thrift shop or draft up a pattern and make a mock up out an old sheet. You will find an occasion to wear it even if it's not your prom.
Make the dress make the dress it's glorious
@@helenebennie3961 it's because prom isn't happening due to covid
When the thunderstorm hit I really hoped you'd say "Now she'll have to stay the night exactly as I predicted..." But you're Lizzie, of course, so I said it for you 😂😂😂
HAHA ohh man missed opportunity 😂😂😂😂
Ikr! I was like you're not going to use the rain opportunity to quote a line from the book? Come on!
"don't know how historically accurate that is" pretty much sums up that whole movie tbh😂
You did a good job, dress looks great!!
You said the darts were bothering you, might I suggest embroidery pattern of that time period? Some great patterns could work well :)
ya'll know the drill: rachel uploaded so drop whatever you're doing and watch!!

I think I about cried when the music started playing and the screen went into “cinema mode”. I’ve seen this movie so many times I could quote the entire thing in my sleep 😍
you looks so beautiful as Lizzy. That wig was SPOT ON. I MUST know where you got it. Something something my poor nerves!
ok but the second you put the wig on i could see an extreme resemblance between kiera knightly and you??? you are SO good at makeup holy shit
Wow, I love the dress. You really hit it out of the park! You look nice with darker hair.
Good eye!

Nothing more refreshing 🌬 than cuddling w/one on a ☀️scorching🔥 hot🌡day.👍😎🤙
I've never been so thankful for checking the comments just because. That sweet old lady and you are my heroes!
I’ve definitely done this. Right in between the boobies
🐝 In lieu of ice, a very quick fix is to hold your wrists under a running faucet. Cooling down the pulse points works. I’m grateful to the person who taught me this.
I actually put a few ice packs on myself (chest, abdomen) when I go to bed and it's too hot... and with a fan. Helps a whole lot with falling asleep!

Also me: Ok, you win.

"Bob's your uncle. ... Mr. Gardiner's your uncle." 😂
😇😇😇
Now I really want to know where that phrase Bob's your uncle came from
Yes yes yes!
