Yes and no. I had a Spanish teacher in Santiago who made fun of my accent - I speak Spanish as a second language and learnt it mainly in Spain (but with time in Peru and Argentina). That said the majority of Chilenos I met were super nice .

It wasn't stupidly optimistic, the newly formed tiny and weak countries were too arrogant (being from one of them myself) to work together in a continent that was soon to be like shark infested water. Intermarium was the last chance of Eastern Europe to avoid the horrible 50 years it had to endure and to learn the fact that from a global perspective we are all in the same shoes therefore our outside threats are the same as well.

Sth I missed with Bengal was mentioning that there had been a Bengal sultanate for 200 years before at one point in the past, just like there had been a Trebizont kingdom with pontic greeks for example.
During the early years of the Soviet regime the Greeks had enjoyed a considerable degree of cultural autonomy and had been able to publish freely in their Pontic Greek dialect, which was barely intelli- gible to those in Greece. But they had the misfortune to be deemed by Stalin to be one of the ‘disloyal’ national minorities.
8:53 Guatemalans and the rest of Central Americans use the pronoun "vos" like the Argentinians, the RFC countries/Guatemalan flag is inspired by the Argentinian one, we still have things in common.
06:38 "It will be rich in agriculture, rich in industry and commerce" and they literally came out of one of the worst famine in human history before this statement.
I have always loved to see this videos with proposal or former countries, I like knowing about current countries, but there are plenty of countries in the past that are also pretty interesting in their own way.
I have to add that you didn't mention a crucial point about Patria Grande. It's conceptualization stems from the original plan of the main liberators of South America, Bolivar and San Martín, to make all the spanish colonies in South America 1 country. This idea predates the creation of the countries themselves, which is amazing in and of itself. Of course, creating a country spaning 10,000 kilometers, wildly different cultures and in a postcolonial warring state is complicated so it didn´t pan out; but still, an important point.
A unified Latin America would've been an enormous superstate and potentially a very powerful country with a huge economy. The problem though is this vast area holds a multitude of peoples with very different customs, values and interests. Even if they all speak some dialect of Spanish, they still have plenty of differences they would need to overcome. Still if it had actually formed and worked out, I can't help but wonder how history would have changed. Such a country would have alot of internal problems but so much potential.
@@sirreepicheeprules7443 Well, obviously each region has its own culture but we all share 3 very important things: History, language, and religion. But unfortunately it never happened
SImilar to Patria Grande the original plan for Colombia proposed by Francisco Miranda was unite all the spanish viceroyalities in one empire that would be ruled by two monarchs descendends of the Inca rulers. After all the independences there was actually a try to unite all the new countries in 1826 in the congreso of Panama but it fail.
You forgot Maphilindo. The unification of the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia which I agree with but never happened. If Maphilindo happened, then there's no border dividing me and my waifu Moona Hoshinova.
On the topic of Geography you could make videos how rivers or mountain chains divide or unite regions. For example the Alps have an "Alpine" culture, but people North and South of the Alps will have a hard time to consider each other similar.
I am Greek and this Pontus thing and these areas...yeah it hurts. Around a century ago we tried to take them back by force but we failed and yeah the population either got killed or fled. It is a really tragic story for us and we all know about it.
I thought about starting my own country a while back. I used to go window shopping on the web for islands. You'd be surprised how many are on the market. Anyway, this one in the Finger Lakes caught my eye. Cool facilities already up like a helicopter port, large dock, row of cottages, a cafeteria, riding trail, and tennis courts, as well as a sauna. Some Swedish company was selling it. There was plenty of room for things like shore batteries, anti-aircraft guns, and a shallow harbor that could be easily mined. I mean, what's a country without coastal defenses? I was going to plagerize my national anthem from Mel Brooks 2000 Year old Man bit: "Let em all go to hell, except for cave 76." It would have something along those lines. Alas, the asking price was 13 million and my petty cash was a bit light at the time. But it would have been beautiful. Of course, with the world being in the state it is these days perhaps me and Wilson would be better off finding something a bit further from the mainland. So long as I can still get Amazon Prime and Netflix of course. This is the 21st Century after all. I'm not breaking sod and fighting cowboys and Indians in rural Kansas. Anyway, cool video. If I do start my own country, I'll let ya know. Maybe you can feature it.
Barbie, you should talk about Couto Misto! A country between Galiza and Portugal that existed from the 10th century until 1864. It was technically independent because of weird feudal laws. Should be something you'd be interested in.
Not sure if you have a video about it yet, but I would like to see a video on economic unions/any other kind of unions countries have. For example the E.U., Mercosur, Nato, etc.
If it would interest you, there was this plan called KRIS - Kesatuan Rakyat Indonesia-Semenanjung. A plan to establish Malay national state consisting of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia post WWII.
Another great concentration of Greeks had settled in Pontos, between the Pontic Alps and the southern shores of the Black Sea. Cut off from the mainstream of Greek life, the Pontic Greeks, large numbers of whom in the nineteenth century migrated to the more welcoming Russian shores of the Black Sea, spoke a form of Greek that was scarcely intelligible in other parts of the Greek world.
Some good candidates for this: South Korea: Almost lost the Korean war to the North initially until US intervention. Taiwan: Could have fully ceased to exist if Communist China attacked the Taiwan island immediately as the Nationalists fled and not wait. Vatican City (Papal States): If Mussolini did not give them independence but instead forced the Pope to surrender. United Kingdom: If Scotland won the independence vote (which it lost narrowly).
@@nuzayerov The UK would've still existed if the vote went the other way though, they just would have to change the end of their name from "...of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" to "...of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland". Still the same country ultimately.
In the 1500s, there was almost a union between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Muscovy (Russia), this would've made the country by far the largest in Europe, and possibly the world at the time.
5:48 "Most of the Muslims migrated to Bengladish and Pakistan" yeah totally migrated and the Indians weren't harrying them across the border and murdering more than 2 million of them at all, it was a totally euphoric migration.

Another interesting states... Sudetenland and Deutschbohemia. Two states who separated themselves from Czechoslovakia in 1918. These regions were mostly German. Majority of Czechoslovakia was made of Czechs and Slovaks. Sudetenland and Detschbohemia wanted to join Germany or Austria. It did not last. They were quickly connected back and stayed in Czechoslowakia till Munich treaty in 1938.
I tried seeing if I could recognize the areas by the thumbnail alone I got three of them right, but I mistook the Intermarium for Greater Somalia and I had no idea what Pontus was supposed to be lol
Part 2 to this video, (includes East African Federation) Administrative divisions of Mexico History of you, Paul (why you got into Geography) Regions and provinces of Italy
Fun fact: once it was clear that the Republic of Pontus wasn't happening, it was suggested that part of it would be included in the Wilsonian Armenia (a first "Armenian Republic" idea that was floating around at the same time), which didn't happen either.
Maybe a parallel universe where like English Speaking North America is a country, except for independent French Quebec; Balanced by a Spanish speaking South American country, except for a Portuguese speaking Brazil. Modern day statistics could be used as a tool as to how that might look.
As a Venezuelan I completely reject the idea of merging all Latin American countries into one, just watching how most of the countries hate Venezuelans, the horrible xenophobia against us and how they simply laugh about our disgrace and hungry, If we get Liberty anytime soon and our country recovers from this nightmare I would prefer to close the border and cut any kind of relationships with the rest of the region, all of them have been really hateful against us, so no… no and 1000 times no.
As a Peruvian born in Argentina, I understand you. We had our own hell between 1980-2000 and many Peruvians suffered the same xenophobia that you guys are suffering today. Sadly, in Peruvian case, despite of knowing what is to suffer xenophobia of our "brothers" countries during those times Peruvians didn't learn to be in solidarity with people that need help, which is shame.
Im from Martinique, We are very touched about what's hapenned to Venezuela. There is some Venezuela migrant thats totally intregated to our society which has never been discrminated by local people. We like you .
As an Iraqi Kurdish person who lives in the West I love you Venezuelans. I even talked to Venezuelans online and they were the coolest people ever. I was even recommended to visit their country. Gus1thego considered Venezuelans to be in the top list of most friendly people. I love your country and my dream is that you make good relationship with us in the Middle East/West Asia because we don't like American colonialism and sanctions which we both have suffered from. When we Muslim countries unite and reach our glory and establish good relations with Venezuela then perhaps the rest of Latin America would also want to join us.
Boy, they only occupied the western part of the modern Turkey map and the land that Greece has now(I'm not speaking as a population, I'm speaking as an established country.). They came to Anatolia part because there were different and barbaric tribes coming.
I did some research about the capadocian greeks and it seems they migrated during the Persian empire and then didn't leave. I don't really know about the pontic greeks, though, as they seem to be related to greeks but also share similar genetics with Georgians and Armenians. About the Pontus region: During the fourth crusade Istanbul was attacked by the army and the city was invaded. (There was even a Latin country for 50 years) .The Rome royal family who ran away to the Pontus region established a new country there.
After WW1 western Hungary was given to Austria (Burgenland or Gradišče in Slavic). Because it was strip of land between Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, and it already had significant Croatian minority, there was idea to make it Czech corridor, so Czechoslovakia could have access to the sea over Yugoslavia and probably unite these 2 countries.
The Bengal one is probably the one of these 5 that would have been the most likely to succeed. Mainly because it's just one ethnic group. I guess Pontus would have been too... oh well. They didn't really want to separate from Turkey anyways.
During that region the Laz, Azeri, Armenian, Georgian, and Azeri people also have claims to that areas as well. It wasn't like it was just one ethnicity in one city, everything was a mix.
Hiya Barbs, really interesting video. Thank you! Would be quite interested in seeing a video about peoples/places that are currently seeking autonomy... Bougainville for example. Cheers!
Glad u included United Bengal, Not many ppl outside know or mention this thing and it was really sad that that didn't happen and many ppl died British bro British
The thing is the Indian Subcontinent was only attacked by outside forces mostly Islamic Invaders but the people being of different religions always remained at peace with each other for centuries until Britishers arrived. They wanted to take control of the whole Subcontinent, so they started dividing people on religion basis. This made people within here so divided based on religion that finally when British left the only solution to this mess was just creating borders based on religion. Just thinking how beautiful it may have been seeing the whole Subcontinent as one. But sadly it will be only a dream of many !
@@zhongguo108 He's not entirely wrong. Some Islamic rulers were exceptionally cruel, but it's unlikely that tensions would've gotten that bad if not for the British system of governance.

Intermarium was the last chance of Eastern Europe to avoid the horrible 50 years it had to endure and to learn the fact that from a global perspective we are all in the same shoes therefore our outside threats are the same as well.
Video proposition if you haven't done it already, talk about the Canadian provinces or Just about Quebec, I'm not Canadian nor Quebecquois but I've always found that very interesting
Love the vids btw ♡
Sth I missed with Bengal was mentioning that there had been a Bengal sultanate for 200 years before at one point in the past, just like there had been a Trebizont kingdom with pontic greeks for example.
During the early years of the Soviet regime the Greeks had enjoyed a considerable degree of cultural autonomy and had been able to publish freely in their Pontic Greek dialect, which was barely intelli- gible to those in Greece. But they had the misfortune to be deemed by Stalin to be one of the ‘disloyal’ national minorities.

Please make a video about the provinces of Vietnam. They’re all so unique and diverse. Also good for VN’s episode
Isn't there like 100 of them though?
Very interesting, keep it up
06:38 "It will be rich in agriculture, rich in industry and commerce" and they literally came out of one of the worst famine in human history before this statement.
Bengal region produced 1/3rd of British Raj's agricultural output.
But unfortunately it never happened
it would be interesting to hear about Rhodesia from you as well
SImilar to Patria Grande the original plan for Colombia proposed by Francisco Miranda was unite all the spanish viceroyalities in one empire that would be ruled by two monarchs descendends of the Inca rulers. After all the independences there was actually a try to unite all the new countries in 1826 in the congreso of Panama but it fail.
Keep up the good work
You forgot Maphilindo. The unification of the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia which I agree with but never happened. If Maphilindo happened, then there's no border dividing me and my waifu Moona Hoshinova.
I loved this video! You have to do more like this!
On the topic of Geography you could make videos how rivers or mountain chains divide or unite regions. For example the Alps have an "Alpine" culture, but people North and South of the Alps will have a hard time to consider each other similar.
BIG Thank You for still making videos on you tube !!
I am Greek and this Pontus thing and these areas...yeah it hurts. Around a century ago we tried to take them back by force but we failed and yeah the population either got killed or fled. It is a really tragic story for us and we all know about it.
I've just come across your channel and have binged on the older ones... Your weight lifting is paying off 💪💪👌
I was sure you would talk about Plan Uganda. Anyway' loved this video!
I can't wait for the UK and USA episodes ❤️
6:10 just wondering why there is a inset map of Australia and New Zealand when showing a map of proposed Bengali?
Barbie, you should talk about Couto Misto! A country between Galiza and Portugal that existed from the 10th century until 1864. It was technically independent because of weird feudal laws. Should be something you'd be interested in.
I only learned about Couto Misto because of those “Countries of Europe in 1850” quizzes on sporcle
it's sounds a bit like how Neutral Moresnet used to exist. however that was a even more odd situation.
A video about italian regions would be awesome
I would totally love to see that

Manuel Ugarte: Patria Grande will be the Greatest Union Proposition of Hispanic America
Francisco de Miranda: Am I a Joke to you?
Awesome!
Keep videos like these coming! 🤜🏻🤛🏻🍻👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻
What about a list of countries that almost ceased to exist, but are still on the map.
You mean like the next episode - Ukraine?
Poland's a good one for this.
Some good candidates for this:
South Korea: Almost lost the Korean war to the North initially until US intervention.
Please discuss the Provinces of China or the recognized ethnic groups!
5:48 "Most of the Muslims migrated to Bengladish and Pakistan"
yeah totally migrated and the Indians weren't harrying them across the border and murdering more than 2 million of them at all, it was a totally euphoric migration.

Honestly that Piłsudski pronunciation was great
Not even watched the video yet and I already love the Bengal rep
Top notch pronunciation of Piłsudski surname, Barbs :3 Also great video, I didn't know about a lot about any of presented almost-countries, except Intermarium, so yeah - great job c:
Another interesting states... Sudetenland and Deutschbohemia. Two states who separated themselves from Czechoslovakia in 1918. These regions were mostly German. Majority of Czechoslovakia was made of Czechs and Slovaks. Sudetenland and Detschbohemia wanted to join Germany or Austria. It did not last. They were quickly connected back and stayed in Czechoslowakia till Munich treaty in 1938.
This is a very interesting topic I was hooked all the way through and it's a fun way to learn parts of history that is not usually discussed.
I love this videos! I hope that we will get impressions on Georgia soon🇬🇪🇬🇪
I tried seeing if I could recognize the areas by the thumbnail alone
I got three of them right, but I mistook the Intermarium for Greater Somalia and I had no idea what Pontus was supposed to be lol
No idea why but there's something quite haunting about that flag at 1:12... It just looks evil

Regions and provinces of Italy
Fun fact: once it was clear that the Republic of Pontus wasn't happening, it was suggested that part of it would be included in the Wilsonian Armenia (a first "Armenian Republic" idea that was floating around at the same time), which didn't happen either.
Normal, because there werent much armenians in north-east anatolia. There were much more Georgians, Lazs,Turks and Azeris
I suggest video about very similiar countries like USA - Canada, Czechia - Slovakia, Germany - Austria and that kind of stuff
A country that almost existed would make a great April 1st video to mix it up a bit. A deep dive on an alternate reality country would be great!
Maybe a parallel universe where like English Speaking North America is a country, except for independent French Quebec; Balanced by a Spanish speaking South American country, except for a Portuguese speaking Brazil. Modern day statistics could be used as a tool as to how that might look.
How about Guyana, Suriname and French Guinea they are not Spanish Speaking they could be separate country of United with Brazil
I never knew any of this! Very helpful
Im from Martinique,
We are very touched about what's hapenned to Venezuela.
Great video, well done. You really shine when you're on your own :)
"Pátria Grande" sounds like "Grande Inflation" to me.
2:25 Greeks inhabited much of the anatolian peninsula * puts an old Persian empire map*

Oh just shut up unlike the others who make countries and kill people in name of religion India give shelter to everyone
During that region the Laz, Azeri, Armenian, Georgian, and Azeri people also have claims to that areas as well. It wasn't like it was just one ethnicity in one city, everything was a mix.
Lol Bangladesh still has one ethnic group still not successful.

States of Mexico explained please! 🇲🇽
