27 years later and it still looks good
I" m still moves me this scene
The Enterprise E looks GREAT!!!
That's why miniatures will always be better than CGI.
@@lileinstein104 Still a good few CGI models in here though too. But there's something to be said for having miniatures in the same movie that the CGI then has to match. And at the time it didn't hurt that it was ILM doing the VFX for this one.
@@meiray Agreed 👌
i love how they for the first time really relay just how huge the enterprise really is when it passes in front of the defiant.
I believe the size of the Enterprise is exaggerated in this shot for dramatic purposes but it is a cool shot nonetheless.
Yes, the Sovereign class was built for war... it is slightly smaller than the Galaxy class, so it can be more maneuverable. There are also no civilians on board. 😀 I mean, really, putting children in danger on a heavily armed cruise ship? 😆 You don't always have time to do the emergency saucer sep.
@@retluoc The Galaxy class was designed when Star Trek was filmed for TV when we still had 4:3 screen ratio, it was designed to look good on a 4:3 display. The Sovereign class was designed to look good on a 16:9 display or theater wide screen.
Massively oversized. The Enterprise (24 decks) is stated to be about 5x the height of the defiant (4/5 decks). That's not what we see there.
@TheRocco96 Yes, interesting point... the Sovereign is longer so that it looks better on modern TVs.
When TNG first came out, I doubt that any producers were thinking about movies... yet.😀
You never clip this scene without including Worf calling for ramming speed!
thought the same lol
He did it. He actually clipped it. No place for you in Sto-Vo-Kore
While it isn't clear on screen the novelization makes it clear why Picard had the fleet all fire on that one area. He had heard the Borg say that the shield emitters in that section were critically damaged and needed immediate regeneration. With the shields there barely functioning the fleets firepower could punch through the shields and hull to destroy the Borg ship especially as there are large open areas inside a cube where explosions from things like torpedoes and exploding generators could rapidly propogate.
That sounds about right. Find a week point, dig a deep enough hole where the Quantum Torpedoes are actually detonating inside the ship as opposed to on the surface. Far more damage. My guess would be then that this is the idea behind the Transphasic Torpedo from Voyager Endgame. Shifting the torpedo out of sync with space-time to bypass the need to make a big hole. The torpedo penetrates, slips back into phase and then detonates.
After all these years, that scene still gets me.
0:06 Worf: “Dang it, I really wanted to ram the cube!”
In his defense, it was a good day to die
Wasn't this when Kirayoshi was born? :D
Plot twist: Every time they encounter even the slightest problem, Worf gives the command to prepare for ramming speed.
-"The fleet have responded sir, they're standing by"
I'm sure the crew of the USS ForFucksSake is glad Picard took a moment to emote all over the bridge before giving the order to fire.
I typed _the Enterprise arrives_ . It doesn't get any more iconic than this.
I first saw this movie at the
The Royal Premier in Leicester Square London☺
I was dressed as Will Riker at the time,
Jonathan Frakes was there and he gave a talk just B4 the movie started!
So many Happy Memories of those days!😊
Love This Movie!
The 2nd Best Star Trek Film!🤔
IMO😁👍
I thought it was the best. I've seen some others, but not all.
Nice, I remember watching this with my parents in the Empire Leicester Square back in the day.
B4? He was there too?😂
I'm assuming number one = Wrath of Khan? :D
‘Sir, there’s another starship coming in. It’s the Enterprise!’
And humanity survives.
Again.
Imagine if the Enterprise and the Millenium Falcon teamed up against the Borg.
@@rockhaze The Falcon is an actual easter egg in this scene!
@@rockhazewith no shields or torpedoes, and with armament barely sufficient to ward off one-man fighters? The Falcon would be a useless encumbance.
@@paulprovenzano3755 the falcon has shields but i severely doubt the effectiveness of it's armament aside from the kinetic force of ftl'ing into the cube
let's make sure history never forgets the name Enterprise
1:17 Top right corner. A bet the Borg we're quaking in their boots seeing that Oberth come charging in 😁
I've never noticed that Oberth class lmao. Supposedly there were multiple Miranda class ships there too. Borg absolutely quaking from that I'm sure.
That sound design. So awesome!
0:08 I will never get tired of this shot! The way the Enterprise fills the whole frame as it comes between the Borg Cube and the Defiant!
As a big fan of DS9, watching the Defiant make a cameo in the movie was badass.
Darn rights, and Season 3 of Picard!
1:14 Really bad day for that Steamrunner.
not the first time a Federation ship disintegrated horribly in front of the enterprise 😭
Not as bad as the ship at 1:34 in the upper left corner. Talk about bad driving leading to bad luck.
@@DrewSavo Yeah that's even worse they destroy the cube and it gets destroyed after....while two Akira classes woop it out of there. Steamrunner being setup to be the new Miranda.....
The opening scene where they zoom into Picard on the Borg cube still looks amazing. Such a great Star Trek movie.
I love how First Contact shows it's possible to do moody lighting on the bridge of the Enterprise while still being able to see the people on the bridge.
That dramatic pause Picard makes before firing......another 1000 Star Fleet personnel dead.....
He was hoping Rho was onboard that vessel.
At the same time, every moment allows more concentration faster to that specific target before the Borg knows what is going on and can adapt. Its a double edge sword technically.
I always thought that myself. 😂
waiting for the best firing range for his own ship's weapons and a better position, need to target the correct side of the cube !
He's waiting for the fleet to get in position
RIP to that ship destroyed in the blast.
This has ALWAYS been my FAV scene in the my FAV Star Trek movie of all time!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
Looks like Starfleet learned their lesson about sending ships in one at a time like they did at Wolf 359.
Still waiting on JTVFX to finish that. Their work so far has been fantastic!
Most famous sci-fi ship in history.
I remember when we saw this in the theater the first time opening weekend, when the enterprise roars in past the defiant, the crowd went nuts.. i was like hell yeah. The borg want some come get some.
I feel sorry for that Federation starship that buys the farm at 1:36. It almost made it!!
I grew up watching TNG with my dad. Finally got my mom to agree to let him take me to see this around my 10th birthday. N to this day I can remember how the whole theater went bonkers with the _”Its the Enterprise!”_ *gorgeous flyby past Defiant*
Movie scared the crap outta me but I loved it. All these years later n it’s still a gorgeous shot.
Super movie 🖤💯🖤
Bit of a plot point that seems to be glossed over here in regards to Starfleet engaging Borg ships is that this would appear to be a winning strategy. Instead of spraying and praying, an entire fleet of federation ships focussing phasers, photon and quantum torpedo fire on one specific point would overwhelm the shield emitters in that spot and allow weapons to punch through the shields and start mullering the hull and inner structures.
That’s a Young Adam Scott at the helm of The Defiant.
I hear he prefers cones over cubes.
Only 'cause Paramount didn't want to risk getting Colm Meaney killed by the Borg.
Chief O’Brien must’ve had quite the reaction when the E towed Defiant home. “WORF?! What did you do?!!!”
Working actor Adam Scott
I thought it was Joel McHale..haha
I was 13 when this came out and I still love it today as I did then!
I must have rewatched this for like twenty minutes straight, the last being in slow motion; seeing and capturing every nuance of the Epic attack on the Borg ship.
I"m still moves me this scene of the movie
What’s Ben Wyatt doing piloting the Defiant?
The best he can
I’ve wondered this for almost 30 years, but why was the view screen off, during a battle no less?
R.I.P. to that galaxy class ship in the top left of the screen that bit the dust in that explosion
That's a steamrunner
There were no Galaxy classes at this battle.
My favourite bit is when Darth Vadar escapes in his shuttle there!
When the borg were still the borg. When star trek was still star trek. Rip star trek 1966-2008
I remember this scene when the Enterprise fired those quantum torpedoes, the whole theater lit up😵💫
This scene shows just how far starship advancement had come in the last six years since a similar fleet engagement at Wolf 359. Back then, the fleet could barely put a dent in the cube. Now, albeit with Picard's help, destroyed one completely.
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!
"First Borg Cube destroyed by fleet action!"
Excellent HD footage!
Yep, crisp, clear, the perfect level of brightness, and great sound effects & music. As awesome as Season 3 Picard was, it just didn't have this. Way too dark (ambient light), full of lens flares and impractical decorative distraction, and everytime they played a familiar soundtrack they cut it off without leaving it to completion, even the credits theme is abruptly shortened.
I remember this in the theater.
ENTERPRISE enters the chat.
Me: That ship is... large...
What a movie. So well written. This all happens within the first ten minutes
0:59 - “Trust me, Data.”
Data: ‘No further questions, Captain.’
Data raises his eyebrows - "Whatever."
Best Next Generation movie, by far. Also the best uniforms, which spilled over to DS9. God dayum I miss Jerry Goldsmith.
Bring back this style of star trek please!!
This was glorious on the bigscreen.
Nice, how the Enterprise E shields the Defiant when it sweeps in front of it.
Where are Captain Sisco and Chief O'Brian 😂
Absolutely captivating movie to 9 year old me. I had already seen every TNG ep multiple times as well as what had aired of DS9.
Was immediately hooked by the opening score and credits
I could a sworn grandpa likes Star Trek I’ll have to ask if he did or maybe was mistaken
good to see my man Ben Wyatt doing his part for Starfleet!
Taking a break from his claymaish 😂
The bog's mistake was building cubes and spheres, when it's all about the cones.
Wow a star ship😮
Holy crap, that was 1996?!
Great job making the TV show feel epic!
1701-D was made for 4:3 television screens.
For movies and widescreen TVs, it was necessary to change to 1701-E.
My favourite scene. ( the sequence)
I really liked this movie but ... in my opinion the introduction of a Borg Queen ruined what made the Borg so scary. When they were introduced in TNG they were described as a collective mind. Where one mind may make a mistake, a million minds working together are less likely to make that mistake. With the Borg Queen it went back to just one person making the decisions and making all kinds of huge mistakes caused by her individuality.
I expect that this will be a controversial opinion but look at "Q Who" s2e16 of TNG, and see how they are described. The queen negated all of that.
You are completely correct. This movie is just, not good. None of the TNG movies are. I think STTNG is the best sc-fi television ever produced but the movies failed to capture what made it so good.
or it paid homage to Borg-Hugh; and their flaws/individuality
I think you overrate the hive mind.
Having Picard under technobabble overwatch of all Collective instructions would
put the Borg at a huge disadvantage
Every starship would be similarly equipped with a recovered borg unit feeding long range data
at least the Queen would be capable of misinformation and improvisation
less QQ from U U
Mr Hawk pursuit course, engage, aye sir.
Starfleet definitely improved from Wolf 359, squadron based from multiple random attack vectors, hit and runs with much more capable vessels (still catastrophic losses, but they had more to throw at the cube this time) the new weapons also helped. Those class 12 phasers on the E are devastating.
No matter how many times I watch this scene I still get goose pimples.
Picard passing down those Borg dna components to his son.
Beautiful
Best of the TNG movies! Too bad they didn't do a couple more.
1:25
Goosebumps guys, every time
Current leading contender for this Saturday nights home cinema movie. Dune 1 & 2 can wait.
Great addition to the series. What I don't get is at 34 seconds. Were they just staring at a grey bulkhead? Why wouldn't the screen view always be on in general or better yet in battle?
In a boss fight, it's important to know the mechanics and have a team that can follow institutions.
This is _real_ Star Trek!
Those torpedos that the Enterprise E shoots out looks like the Torpedo’s were thrown in hard to the Borg Cube.
I have loved “First Contact “ ever since my Girlfriend & I went to see Star Trek First Contact at the Mid Night Show when this was released November 22 1996.
Damn I can’t believe how long it’s been!!!!!!!
It's also the new proton torpedo that starfleet designed to exactly fighting the borgs. That's why it's blue while the other ships still use the red photon torpedoes.
According to the shot at 0:12, the defiant is basically the size of a shuttle craft.
I love how they learned their lesson from the Wolf 359 massacre. Conventional wave tactics let the cube just rip the fleet apart. In first Contact they said hold my synthahol and swarmed the thing
All them ships saw the Enterprise and said "Oh the Borg are so screwed now!"
"OK, Everybody! Everybody all fire in the SAME SPOT! Thats the trick! Dont shoot it all over the place, but fire in the same spot!"
It’s a good scale shot
Coincidentally, during the time shown in movies, Starfleet was on energy conservation policy and that's why the lights are so dim.
Great scene!!
"Perhaps today IS a good day to die! PREPARE FOR RAMMING SPEED!!"
Worf: Ramming speed!
Ensign: There's another ship..... *it's the Enterprise!*
Worf: ....Belay my last.
The Sovereign Class 'E' was the most magnificent looking Starship IN Trek Culture. Even Worf preferred it's weapon systems, in spite of all Geordi's efforts 😁
Nah Enterprise D and The original Enterprise after refit in the first movie ..they were the beauty queens ... got nothing against E ..just looks more generic to me
the weapons guy prefers the ship with better weapons? Shocking! The D had more elegance and class not to mention we had 7 years with it so may also be nostalgia. Although the future D with the giant canon and 3 nacels probably is still the most badass enterprise for me.
Why would you remove the Defiants attack run!?
Two things that jump out at me in this clip, first the sheer size of Big E flying between the Defiant and the cube is just so damn cool and awe inspiring. It’s something DS9 failed in my mind to show. Seriously they made the Defiant look like the size of a shuttle craft in this (which tells you awesome size of the Big E). And the second would be why the hell did Troi give that shocked look at Picard when he said he was taking command of the fleet?
You should rewatch some of the dominion war engagements. There is one particular scene where a Federation fleet tries to break through the enemy fleet. You see these smaller ships bunched up around 3-4 Galaxy classes that look like proper battleships. One cardassian cruiser starts firing at smaller vessels as a Galaxy maneuvers itself between it and the fleet and fires. That moment, the Galaxy really looks big as hell. While it passes, the other Galaxy in the center of the fleet has crossed the distance in its shadow and takes the cardassian up where fhe first left it.
It's just some 5-8 seconds sequence, but it lives rent free in my head for that reason. The impression of the Galaxies size and the maneuvering of the Galaxies to use their own bulk and firepower to protect the smaller Mirandas and Excelsiors of the fleet.
it's the first rematch since Best of Both Worlds
I think whatever she felt, it be would be alarming
Captain Ahab alarming
I actually wonder if the Defiant was rendered for this shot, hence why the E looks so massively oversized.
Watch it again imagining it without the Defiant and the cube just looming in. Still a terrifying shot.
mr hawk pirsuit course engage!
Shout out to that ship that died in the explosion. Nice flying.
Why transporter room 3? I hope the guy hasnt left for some reason while those in transporter rooms 1 and 2 are just chilling
Finally, the Federation destroys a Borg cube and gets a little revenge.
1:09
I love this music video. It's from Pew Pew's Greatest hits album.
I just reslized this - they can't beam survivors while the shields are up.
Oh
Riker: The fleets responded sir they're standing by.
Picard: *Let me just wait a few seconds so they can blow up a couple more of our ships*
Picard: Fire.
Sits with Wrath of Khan as the two preeminent movies in the series. IMHO.
Fire.
"Fire all of your weapons onto the following coordinates!"
"Sir, what is the source of your information?"
"Trust me, bro!"
If Picard is using that logic…. I’m gonna trust him.
It would have looked better when it passed in front of defiant the phasers were firing a broadside and as it turned to leave aft torpedoes were firing. Then Data could say borg cube was fluctuating
One thing that bothers me is the scaling. The Enterprise looks too big compared to the Borg Cube when it explodes.
And for 10 seconds, we had the TNG/DS9 movie crossover we always wanted….too bad they couldn’t get their act together for Star Trek 9: Dominion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
were they just looking at a blank wall the whole time until he says on screen?
I'm still curious to this day what was at the location on the cube that Picard knew was a weak spot that caused the cubes destruction
I always figured since they had sustained heavy damage, that part of the cube was a choke point where all of their plasma power was being routed to keep things running while they regenerated other systems. Hitting it caused a massive amount of energy to be released, which snowballed, and that was it.
@@krisdphillips Wow thats a really good answer, it makes alot of sense
It was waste extraction
Picard still had some of the abilities of Locustus, meaning he could actually hear what the Borg collective was saying. He just waited for them to call for priority regeneration of a certain area, which would mean said area was critically damaged and needed repairs fast - so he ordered the fleet send more pain to that location.
I would have given anything for that fight scene to last 5 minutes or so
Heh I didn’t need A Fleet to Destroy a Borg Cube ship
