I have NI Komplete 14 Standard and love it. I will wait and see the benefits of the new products and if they look good, I will purchase them.
I'm still using Sonar Platinum in my 7th Gen i7 PC with 24GB ram and it runs like a champ. My most recent project finished with 82 tracks and numerous plugins. The "freeze track" option is a life saver. I've thought about changing but, if it ain't broke, don't fix it right?

Thank You Marcus!!!!! Wooow, you answerd lots of questions I had for years. I too been a Cakewalk, Sonar user for years. What will I do, I too spend lots of money on and with this software, so I am sticking with it. Curriose as you, to see what the New SONAR is offering. As to another DAW, I have Tracktion, which is now Waveform. Love to see videos on that, since I havent use it in years. Again, Thanks, very informative.
I will look into making some Waveform videos. Right now I got a few things ahead of Waveform. Maybe I could make a series of videos recording a project from start to finish using Waveform free. let me know what you think.
Very nice detailed video explains it all. It's a good thing you have the purchased X3 with all those extra plugins you paid for already that they are just going to bring back again. Seems like you're in a real good position to just keep and use what you have already and then just get third party plugins. You could just stick with your x3 seems like there is so much there already not much more to desire I think :)
I have Sonar Platinum which is the very next version above X3. They may not bring everything back. I don't think they are going to bring back session drummer but I could be wrong. A large part of my decision to upgrade will be based on new features and new plugins. If they drastically change the workflow I will probably say no thank you.-Then again I might just buy it and make UA-cam videos Showing people how to use it.
Old memories are coming back may need to break out my copy of the books by Scott Garigus. Wish he would do something with cakewalk again his books where greatness.
I still have producer 7 after years and it does everything I need especially with my hardware analog gear and third party plugins to compliment it. I think the best upgrades I could do now are hardware interface and maybe some of the excellent new behringer analog hardware I see that's come out or is releasing. When I started all this they didn't even have daws, I had a tascam 244 so for me using producer 7 today with third party plugins covers it all and I can get to the quality I need to publish something. --- is there anything that would hold you back besides native plugin availability that would be limiting for you if you stuck with just 7? Curious, thanks!
I had a Tascam 244 too. We are going way back in time now. I loved that thing and wrote a lot of music using that device. X3 does everything I need but X3 also had many bugs. These bugs were addressed in Cakewalk by Bandlab and it looks and operates like X3. The nice thing about Bandlab's version is that it imports everything from Sonar so all those plugins work in Bandlab's version. I am surprised that you have not tried Cakewalk by Bandlab. It is still free and it will remain free, but it won't be available once the new DAW's come out. The one thing I wonder about is the ability of these older Sonar platforms to work with newer versions of windows. That would force an upgrade of some sort. I am not so sure that I would upgrade. It really all depends on the new features. I thought about upgrading for sentimental reasons just as a way to show support. I am not even sure I am going to do that. Right now ever thing is on a wait and see plan.
Guys I have been using Sonar since version 6 LE ..... and like Marcus, I have numerous versions right down to Platinum ...... the fact of the matter is the world is ADDICTED to CHANGE ..... WHY ? I can understand internet security issues keep both Apple and Microsoft constantly patching and upgrading their OS ...... but do musicians need all that constant change ? A few years ago I unplugged a computer from the internet permanently...... it sits in my studio running all my favorite software and hardware on Windows 7 ...... a closed eco-system for creativity never to be "upgraded" ..... running old music hardware (that has long ceased to get "driver updates" for new OS versions) and music software no longer being updated (such as our beloved Cakewalk DAW). I can finally spend some time creating music ...... instead of constantly learning new software ...... I use different (and more modern) computers for accessing internet..... and interacting with the rest of the world ...... problem solved 😁
I have Sonar Pro version which is a step below the Platinium V, thank you for this video and I am waiting to see what the new sonar will be. Will old Sonar users will liable to a good discount ? I am tempted to migrate to Studio One but I will wait and see .
I am also waiting to see what my options are, and there are several things to consider. How buggy will the new Sonar be? Will it have any new useful features, or will it be a dressed up version of Sonar Platinum? How well does it work with Windows 10? What will the price structure be like? There are many things to consider. I have been looking at other DAWs but it may be that the New Sonar will be just fine. The one thing I will not do is work with rentware subscription stuff. That is a dealbreaker for me. If I need to pay a monthly fee then I am out.
I vote for you to be their ceo. Thank you, I’m a beginner to cake walk, still got my original software from 24 years ago, and use. But recently, my wife passed away and I needed to put down some tracks, some tracks of my tears, which has motivated me to upgrade from the ‘99 version. You should seriously consider being CEO over Cakewalk.
I am sorry to read about your wife's passing. tough times indeed. The good thing is Cakewalk is still free so you can upgrade. It's amazing how music can help you get through the toughest of times.
There are many things that Gibson has done in the past to harm the gear and music world. Many people don't even know that Gibson acquired Mesa Boogie. Now all Mesa Boogie amps are Gibson. Given their past, I am not so sure if that is a good thing.
Hi Marcus, great video! I did all that stuff, bought the V-Studio 700, still download stuff from my Cakewalk account, and I bought the Behringer X32 Producer to replace the V-Studio 700 as a control surface. Having used Cakewalk for so many years I would like to stick with it, and I suppose the thing is that if I changed to another software, it would have to work with the Behringer X32 as a control surface.....
Hi Louis, There are other DAW platforms that allow you to use the X32 producer as a control surface. Reaper, Cubase, and Studio One are all examples of this. Although I have not thoroughly tested them. Look for DAWs that use the MCU Program. Waveform Free is another free DAW that allows you to use the X32 as well. At this stage of the game I have used Cakewalk for decades. I have hundreds of older projects recorded using that software. The idea of importing them and moving them into a new DAW is a daunting task. I don't want to learn another DAW platform at this point. I guess it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I am sticking with Cakewalk for a number of reasons. I am just curious, Do you still have your V-studio 700? Did it find a good home? I gave my V-100 to my son and he still uses it today. What a solid piece of hardware that was. Roland did a good job with the V-100. I know there were more tech issues with the V-Studio 700.
@marcuscurtismusic hi Marcus, thanks for your prompt reply... To answer your question: I loved the V-Studio 700 to bits - it was the centrepiece of my music room . So arrogant of Roland to discontinue the Windows updates. I bought that system when I lived in Panama, so it was 110 volt (as well as 2 Wharfdale reference speakers and a Korg M3), so when I moved back to France I had to buy a transformer for all that gear. When I got tired of constantly looking for Windows update hacks, I threw it out - I didn't know anyone in France who even knew what it was.... I did some great work on it though....
@@LouisODwyer I think it's sad that you threw it out. As Indiana Jones would say, "It belongs in a museum" I had a 88 key Roland midi controller and around the same time they stopped with updates for the V-700 they ended updates for the midi controller too. By this time the new version of windows was out and this hardware did not work with it. Roland wanted you to purchase their new midi controller. I made sure my new midi controller did not say Roland. I understand that frustration.
I was one of the guys that bought the vs 700 and vs 100. I would want to know if the new sonar will support this hardware. Very interesting history it was very reflective for me.
I too have the VS-100. The new Sonar should work with anything that works with Windows 11 or maybe even Windows 10. If you have working drivers for these operating systems, then the New Sonar should work. As far as support goes for that hardware, I would not count on it.
hey what should I do? Im totally freaking out Im basing a whole new console design Ive been working all year with cakewalk. Im almost ready to approach bandlab behringer and sweetwater to manufacture and distribute.
Thanks for the info. IMO it's good you still have access to fx/instruments in whatever previous versions of cakewalk/sonar you may have purchased. Curious to see what is going to be offered in their new version because what is being shown on cakewalk website you already have if you have Sonar Platinum. Hopefully the waiting period doesn't hurt CB. I have seen respected CB users/teachers now using other DAWS. Just my opinion.
I have seen that too. In addition to bringing back some features from the old platinum days the new Sonar is going to have some new features. No one knows what they are. They give some hints on their website. I think they need to bring this DAW into the modern era. We have yet to see if they will achieve it.
@@marcuscurtismusic Agreed 👍. Imo Studio one which i have also is like a modernized cakewalk . If the new Calkwalk Sonar is not at least on that level I dont see people making the switch back especially after getting used to Studio one work flow. But I'm rooting for Calkwalk.
@@mikesmith3084 I love Studio One. I have it too. I think the new Sonar needs to be on the same level as well. Before I make the switch to the full flagship version of Studio one I want to wait and see what the new Sonar is like.
What would this possibly mean for those of us that have Sonar Producer 8.5.3 (also have Cakrwalk by Band Lab) but CW by BL did nothing for me as far as essen TY ial tools I used in Sonar 8.5 producer which I paid top dollar for...not to mention have yet to update ftom Windows 7 pro to W10
I Have no problem paying for it. I paid for it before when it was cakewalk pro audio, and sonar producer. and sonar professional. I am a hardcore cakewalk user and will continue to use it whether its free as bandlab or sonar once again and I have to pay for it. A DAW of that capability shouldn't have been free in the first place if you ask me but that's just my opinion. Cakewalk Has a ton of features that are just as good as all the competitors to include Pro tools if not better.
Man i was a Sonar Platinum head but when Gibson did that BS with the lifetime upgrades ,i saw the handwriting on the wall and brought a mac and start using Logic and didnt look back !
So what happens when you've paid not an inconsiderable amount for the original Sonar Producer, Bandlab offers for free and now wants to charge again for the Bandlab Producer. These companies are crooks. I bought Sonar and Pro Logic licences outright to stop these companies blocking my access to my material but still I end up paying for fuck all. Criminals.
Please read my comment above. I think that you can use all the plugins included in Producer inside Cakewalk By BandLab. Even if you do not upgrade, BandLab is fantastic.
Many features that were unique to Cakewalk /Sonar - years later - had been re-interpreted by other companies ... i.e. vintage channel strip emulations, console emulations, multiband comp, high bit rate and sampling, skylight UI , add ons, etc etc ... Noobs talk about their DAWs and market trends - as if - they chppse the pro's state-of-the-art tools ... and treat cakewalk - as if - it is not a 'pro' DAW ... they just show that they just have less than 15-10 years into music production ... Craig Anderton was/is/will be a visionary when it comes to digital audio production ... and there were a time that the Cakewalk/Sonar and Cubase were the platform of choice for digital audio production on PC ... FL Studio, Ableton and other plaraforms were the amateurs toys ... Studio One was trying to copy Sonar Skylight UI ... If Craig Anderton continues in the advisory board for Sonar by Band lab ... very likely, it will show some kind of improvements.
I had the model before the A-800 was released. When Roland released the A-800 pro they stopped support for the previous model. Windows 10 came out and Roland did not offer any drivers. The midi controller became useless. I only had the controller a for a few years. I started purchasing Yamaha midi controllers after that. I downloaded Cakewalk Next and experimented with it. I am excited to see what changes are made to the new version of Sonar when it is released. While you can't acquire Sonar you can still get Cakewalk by Bandlab for free. at least for now.
@marcuscurtismusic Appreciate the update. Saved me a paper weight. I'm sure it works fine as a straight midi cc controller. Of couse, maybe not if roland had implemented some sort of proprietary scheme specific to the software. Anyway, did read that there were issues with rubber coating on the buttons and sliders. Yuk. Thanks, agaun.
I just found an old Cakewalk Overture 2.1 in my attic and it does run on my Windows 10 PC. Is this ok or should I go for more recent software? I'm new to this and would appreciated any advice.
Score Writer and Overture have been acquired by GenieSoft, Inc. As of August 13, 2001. I would go for more recent software, but if Overture works and fills all your needs that is fine too. I don't know how outdated it is.
Had Cakewalk for years up to sonar x-3...when it went haywire....hurt me good. Was running 22 terratek cards for 16 tracks... .bundle files....all unusable for wave files...
As time goes by somethings you said are incorrect. Sonar will be the same windows onlyNext is multi platform. Cakewalk by bandlab will only keep working for as long as they decide to keep it activated. They can pull the plug at any time in the future. Sonar will return to having different levels at different price points. So it is speculation but there will be a version that is very affordable as Noel put it.
I thought I made it clear that the things I said regarding the future of Sonar and Cakewalk Next was speculation and that I don't know anything for sure. This is why I wanted feedback from other people. Sorry for any confusion. I did see that some of the things that were stripped away from sonar are used in the promotion of the version that is soon to be released. This is what I base some of my predictions on. The Cakewalk Next Website said that once the new versions are released they are no longer going to allow you to sign up for the free version of Bandlab by cakewalk, but if you are a registered user you will still be able to install it and use it. This is what the website says and I was merely repeating it. Now, weather or not they honor that remains to be seen. Everybody's opinion is speculation.
The goal is to reveal the history of this great platform. I have used Sonar and Cakewalk for decades. Still my favorite. I think it is tragic that people blame Cakewalk for what Gibson has done. All I want is for people to put aside any previous bias and give the new Sonar a fair shake. If I am impressed with it I plan on buying it.
hello i have sonar platinum but it seem that the server is no longer available if need it to reinstall it in my computer, do you know how can i recover it
I have a licence for Reaper but I am struggling to get into it, I miss my CALS. The routing is funky and frankly a PITA. Ardour had potential but struggled to even playback a midi file. I am trying to get away from Microsoft and use Linux. Maybe I am just too entrenched in Cakewak, previosly beta tester and local distributor. I am getting too old to learn new tricks and becoming a frumpy old Fart. Going to load Sonar 8.5 tomorow. The Last of that Generation. Then work my way back up to Platinum if I have to.
First, the TTS-1 should be installed. You should be able to call it up. It is even installed with the Bandlab version of Cakewalk. If you don't see it, then the first thing I would do is check plug in layouts. 1. To do this, open up an empty project 2. create an empty audio track in the clips pain 3. Right click Over the FX bin and go to insert software synth 4. go to plugin layouts and then manage layouts 5. When the window opens up, click on DirectX Instruments under plugin categories 6. You should see Cakewalk TTS-1 listed there 7. If it is not there, then go toward the bottom of the window and click on show excluded. Now only the excluded plugins will show up 8. once you click on excluded, go back to the DirectX instrument folder. 9. If you see it in the excluded folder, then highlight it and click on Enable plugin Now you should see it in your plugin lists. If the TTS-1 is not listed in excluded or enabled plugins, then it is not installed or Cakewalk does not see it. The TTS-1 is a directX plugin, so a VST scan will do no good. You will need to reinstall the plugin via Bandlab or reinstall Sonar Platinum It could also be that your plugin layout does not display the plugin. In that case, just change your plugin layout 1. To do this, right-click on the FX bin once again 2. Go to insert software synth 3. Go to Plugin Layouts 4. Choose a different layout. You should have 3 options. Sort by category, sort by manufacturer, and sort by type. Choose sort by type 5. Right click in the FX bin one more time and go to insert software synth. From there go to DirectX and the synth should be in there. You should now be able to insert the synth by using the browser tab. Press B on the keyboard to open up the browser. Click on the plugins tab inside the browser, then click on the plus sign under directX. The TTS-1 should be listed there. Click on it to use it in the project. If it is not listed, then it is not installed, and you will need to reinstall platinum. I believe you may be able to do a custom install and just reinstall the plugins you are missing. I hope you get it working. By the way, I would help you even if you did not subscribe.
Most of the plugins I showed in this video came free with the purchase of Sonar. A few of them I purchased. They were made by Cakewalk and came with it back when Cakewalk by Bandlab was called Sonar. When Bandlab acquired Sonar, they stripped away many of the plugins I have shown. Now that Bandlab is reintroducing Sonar I suspect some of these plugins will be added once again. I don't know which ones will be added. I think we will find out more as we get closer to the release date.
I have no problem paying for CW (new to come) Sonar, I've used CW since it was ProAudio 5 in the late-90s.. I paid for it then, and I will pay for it again.. besides, many music supply online sites, will finance anything for you, even over 48 months; can you afford 15 bux a month? really? get serious.
What I would truly like to see is more music influencers telling the youngsters to "learn your instrument, hone your craft and if you truly want to make money with it ..Be The bard. Sha-na-na-na-na. 🎶🎶😁🎶🎶
Anyone who has used CW during the 'free' period should be grateful.... And should not reward those who have been providing us with one of the best..... To say otherwise reveals you as a,.....
I hope I can buy it outright. I have no interest in a subscription because I also use Studio One and Mixcraft. I also hope that it's affordable and not more than Studio One.
I'll continue to use the same DAW that I've used for the past 12 or 13 years: Sonar Home Studio 7.
I'm just glad Cakewalk is staying alive.

R-Mix was great! They should bring it back, used it as an automated filter.
I vote for you to be their ceo. Thank you,
I’m a beginner to cake walk, still got my original software from 24 years ago, and use.
That was great, enjoyed the history lesson, especially Gibson, didn't know they wasted all that money on tascam, very cool
There are many things that Gibson has done in the past to harm the gear and music world. Many people don't even know that Gibson acquired Mesa Boogie. Now all Mesa Boogie amps are Gibson. Given their past, I am not so sure if that is a good thing.
@@marcuscurtismusic oh wow, yeah gibson didnt do much amp wise, like say fender, hopefully they keep the mesa boogie'n
To answer your question:
I loved the V-Studio 700 to bits - it was the centrepiece of my music room .
I'd like to see a resurrection of Project 5
Excellent and informative video
Does the Roland Sonar cakewalk V-Studio 100 work with the Cakewalk by Bandlab?
Yes it does and it works well
I Have no problem paying for it.
For the moment I am planning on making a purchase as soon as Sonar is released. Even if it is just a subtle improvement over what I have.
Man i was a Sonar Platinum head but when Gibson did that BS with the lifetime upgrades ,i saw the handwriting on the wall and brought a mac and start using Logic and didnt look back !
Many people did that. Logic is great software.
I remember a time when Cakewalk was considered one of the best DAWs you could get. It is still a pro DAW in my book and it is still my favorite.
Wonder if we can still 'acquire' cakewalk? Was about to pick up an old Roland A 800 pro. Oh well.
Me too. Platinum 545 a month for a year
I just found an old Cakewalk Overture 2.1 in my attic and it does run on my Windows 10 PC.
Thanks for sharing this video, it will encourage those who intended to run from Cakewalk to stay and pay for the new version.
@@marcuscurtismusic Yes that's a true talk and I continue with Cakewalk Sonar if it's cool when it finally come out. Thanks
I just bought a new laptop.
$500 for a lifetime ownership.
hello i have sonar platinum but it seem that the server is no longer available if need it to reinstall it in my computer, do you know how can i recover it

@@marcuscurtismusic thank you so much
I have a licence for Reaper but I am struggling to get into it, I miss my CALS.
Hope they have a mac version
Marcus, my Sonar Platinum TTS1 is missing from the registry from. How can I get it working again? Help me with this an ill be a loyal subscriber.
John
First, the TTS-1 should be installed. You should be able to call it up. It is even installed with the Bandlab version of Cakewalk. If you don't see it, then the first thing I would do is check plug in layouts.
1. To do this, open up an empty project
2. create an empty audio track in the clips pain
3. Right click Over the FX bin and go to insert software synth
4. go to plugin layouts and then manage layouts
5. When the window opens up, click on DirectX Instruments under plugin categories
6. You should see Cakewalk TTS-1 listed there
7. If it is not there, then go toward the bottom of the window and click on show excluded. Now only the excluded plugins will show up
8. once you click on excluded, go back to the DirectX instrument folder.
9. If you see it in the excluded folder, then highlight it and click on Enable plugin
Now you should see it in your plugin lists. If the TTS-1 is not listed in excluded or enabled plugins, then it is not installed or Cakewalk does not see it. The TTS-1 is a directX plugin, so a VST scan will do no good. You will need to reinstall the plugin via Bandlab or reinstall Sonar Platinum
It could also be that your plugin layout does not display the plugin. In that case, just change your plugin layout
1. To do this, right-click on the FX bin once again
2. Go to insert software synth
3. Go to Plugin Layouts
4. Choose a different layout. You should have 3 options. Sort by category, sort by manufacturer, and sort by type. Choose sort by type
What is the problem? before band lab took over cakewalk we had to buy it.
I only have 33 vst plugin. Were all those you have free or paid for?
Most of the plugins I showed in this video came free with the purchase of Sonar. A few of them I purchased. They were made by Cakewalk and came with it back when Cakewalk by Bandlab was called Sonar. When Bandlab acquired Sonar, they stripped away many of the plugins I have shown. Now that Bandlab is reintroducing Sonar I suspect some of these plugins will be added once again. I don't know which ones will be added. I think we will find out more as we get closer to the release date.
My Cakewalk is totally bugged, maybe the process started...
Doubt. Because they want me to pay for it now.
If I were I intending to try to make money with music, I would have no problem spending the cash. As it is, no point.😁
🎶🎶🎹🎹🎶🎶Play On
I agree. If I operated a recording studio for profit I would need other DAW apps just to make money.
To say otherwise reveals you as a,.....
they are like drug dealers; the first hits are free. lol
i'm glad i steered way away from that.
I hope I can buy it outright. I have no interest in a subscription because I also use Studio One and Mixcraft.
I also hope that it's affordable and not more than Studio One.
