One time charge and I'm in. Subscription based and I'm out. That simple. I hope I can stay with Cakewalk.
I'm with you on that point
@@curtismitchell538this
@@curtismitchell538 You and I are out
We're out. $14.95 a month or $126 a year. It is completely worth it to buy it. Not going to "lease" any software. I either own it, or I find other DAW's that I can own. I can own Studio One 6.5 pro edition for $149.99 complete. They also have a subscription offer, Studio One +. I'm afraid that Bandlab is going to learn the hard way that subscriptions drive away customers.
They can have both, but I 100% agree that there should be an option to purchase using the 'old' model - buy it and it's yours, including a reasonable bug fix etc period, and, a discount for any major release (e.g. how Propellerhead does it). I will definitely support it if they did this.
I don't care so much about new features or UX. Just let it be stable, flawless and without a subscription.
Yeah, I can spend some extra time on and less than optimal user interface as long as everything works and it doesn't crash with the client looking on.
Seconded!!!
Subscriptions suck... "renting" software sucks and is a hard No for me.
Me too!
i have already purchased studio one just in case!
I’m a 20+ year Sonar user. I won’t be doing a subscription based service. Ok with paying each time a major version comes out. Thanks Mike, very nice review!
I agree happy to pay a reasonable price for a professional level product, but subscribing is anathema.
It truly is madness...everyone from your office software, to web plugins, notation software, news sites, music tutorials, cloud storage, etc., etc., they all want subscription. How many times can you pay $10 to $20 per month without running out of money? And when you stop paying suddenly nothing works anymore! Madness.
I’ve been a Cakewalk user for 30 yrs and it only gets better
14.95 a month to use it
@@rocsaltjohn if so, that’s not expensive for what all it provides. Nothing good is free in my world.
@@barron267 willing to pay for it. Just not perpetually
@@barron267 Not looking for "free". I'm looking for non-subscription. I'll pay $149.99 for Studio One 6.5. That isn't "free". I don't "rent or lease" any software. If that's their only option, I'll buy somewhere else.
@@rocsaltjohnNo, the current price is for Bandlab 'Backstage Pass' membership. This only gives you a preview (none-saveable) of Cakewalk Sonar, it's not the price for the subscription. Listen to what Mike says right at the beginning of his video.
Great video Mike! - a couple of things for clarification:
1. The spectrum analyser is part of the Pro Channel EQ module, so not only does the spectrum analyser need to be enabled, both the Pro Channel and the Pro Channel EQ module also need to be enabled, otherwise no audio is running through it to analyse. Tweaking the EQ plot as you did in the video will automatically enable both the Pro Channel and Pro Channel EQ.
2. Dragging effects to make sends: Quick grouping is supported with this operation - i.e. If you a have a track selection, holding CTRL while dropping the effect on the send area will add a send on all selected tracks. Also, holding ALT while dropping the effect will put the effect in an Aux track instead of a Bus. Due to how the Plugin Browser works, you need to use CTRL and/or ALT *after* you start dragging - but as long as you're holding them down at the point of dropping, they should work.
I paid for sonar for life back in the day! I hope that they'll honor that.
sh'yeah.. right.
Why would BandLab honor a Gibson promise? The two have nothing to do with each other. BandLab purchased the company IP, not their obligation.
You paid for Sonar Platinum for life... you still have access to that installer.
Me too.
@@adambrannon not true. When you acquire a product from another company you are required to honor purchased licenses by law for the same product!
I've had a fairly extensive play with this - liking it a lot. Still a few tiny niggles but looking good. I'm also finding the new UI very light on system resources. Great to have the Concrete Limiter back, I'm a big fan of the low frequency saturation. Great review, as always. Thanks for continuing to keep us all up to speed.
How did you even download it? I got the backstage pass, but cannot find where to get the installer
I’m still on Sonar Platinum, and it still serves me well everyday as a sound engineer. The Sonar Platinum theme design still looks better since these new knobs, buttons, and FX rack don’t stick out like they do in Platinum, causing this new version to look like one homogenous blur. The color of the new EQ knobs are pathetic and require more time to stop and read since everything has the same color with no contour and shading like in Sonar Platinum.
The buttons no longer have buttons, they are just floating icons, and the separation between menus is awkward since everything has the same background. Sonar Platinum has several different shades in order to accentuate the differences between the background and foreground of the channel strip, naturally drawing the eyes to what’s important: The controls.
This new version honestly feels amateur, like a step backwards to what was once, the leading DAW in the industry.
Absolutely correct. These flat UI's arent for professionals. They are for people with leisure time to hunt around the screen for things. Yuck!
AMEN!
If they are going to charge for it I think they needed more than that. Easier and better quantizing for example.
I was wondering how the interface was going to look. I can see how much it is a continuation of the current Cakewalk by Bandlab rather than a dramatic change. Good to be able to see it. Hope that the company figures out their pricing scheme soon because the longer they delay, the more appealing going to other products will be.
Don't you think they already know the pricing? Of course they do. It's time they came out with it. I could be wrong but I think it won't be subscription based, certainly if they're reading the comments. Probably three different levels at increasingly higher prices.
I'm really stoked about your new Sonar channel! Most of what I know about the BandLab version I learned from you (there were only ~500 subscribers when I discovered you). While I expect a relatively modest acceleration in the new learning curve this new channel will present (don't want to get thrown into the deep end too quickly), there's one issue that I hope has a solution that you'll get around to. Namely, how to copy clips or entire tracks, hopefully including all plugins, settings, and automation lanes, from one project to another. I've needed and waited so long for such a feature. 😭
Excellent preview! Thanks, Mike!
Thanks for your work Mike!
Hi Mike, thanks for the update. Good luck with the new channel
Thank you Mike, very informative as usual.
Thanks as always Mike. Fabulous overview
Good stuff Mike! Thank you.
Thanks Mike for the preview.
Thanks for making the video! Great job!
Great to see you back Mike
Thanks for the show-and-tell, Mike!
Very good. Thanks for the update!
Thanks for the insights!
Like what I see, so far! Thanks Mike for the video!
Looking forward to part 2!
Thank you for your research and work, Mike. Super helpful and appreciated.
Routing and Track Manager is really nice new feature
I loved the new features. Keep it coming!
Great explanation as always Mike
Great vid Mike. Looks like there are lots of new goodies to get stuck into.
It's good to see Sonar again in development. I love feeling confidant about this DAW that has been a great "friend" to me. Welcome back!
Great Stuff, Mike. Thank you!
Hey Mike! Looks promising. I like the new features you called out. Looking forward to more info coming!
Thanks mate, your videos are very clear and useful.
Thanks Mike. Love your work.
Thank you, Mike. I like what I'm seeing. Looking forward to more.
Good to see the return of Cakewalk. Its a pleasure to use
Thanks for the early heads-up, Mike.
Love it and love your work, Mike
Wonderful as always, really good explained and so nice to see you happy again dear Mike!
Mike , Very Nice early video for the new channel. I've already learned some things not mentioned in the forum. Glad you're back ..
Mike , So glad your hanging in there, I can’t tell you how much you have helped me down thru the years. Thank you
Nice looking DAW and nice features.
Thank goodness!! An end marker!!!
Thank you, Mike.
Thanx for this one Mike and see You in the next one👊👍😁
Appreciate the overview Mike. I really like what they're doing to Cakewalk Sonar - those improvements are looking excellent.
Hi Mike thanks for these first impressions of the new Sonar ...
From Germany with best regards...
Very Informative. Keep up the good work.
I feel like I'm nudging notes to get them in time about 90% of the time whenever I'm composing. Having a negative offset per articulation is a GOD SEND. This makes Cakewalk the new king of midi editing, in my opinion. I'll finally be able to focus on just writing the damn music!
Last night I had a catastrophic timing glitch however it was a one off and could possibly have been op error as by last "night" I mean 4 AM Texas time😅
great synopsis, i'm now starting to get interested in the new version
Thanks, Mike!
Thank you Mike. As always, your abilities as teacher and instructor only keep getting better and better.
Thanks Mike! As always- so helpful and informative! I’ve used both Cakewalk and Studio One for years. Looking like Cakewalk Sonar might be back in the game!
Thanks for going over this Mike, very informative. I'll be honest, I run an ultrawide monitor at 2K, but "CbB looks fuzzy" has never been a complaint of mine, so while Sonar looks better, I don't really care. It's really going to depend on the price for me, but I'm seriously considering moving to Studio One (largely thanks to your S1 channel). The new features in the new Sonar simply doesn't hold a candle to the "already there" features in Studio One - chord track and harmonic editing, better time stretching/quantizing, a performance window that actually shows you which plugins are causing the most latency, simpler implementation of articulations and drum maps, probably more. The only thing I'd maybe miss is the ProChannel, which has been awesome. Concrete Limiter and Session Drummer - don't care, already have them from SPLAT days, that's not a new feature to me. I do like the offset timing for slow attack instruments, that's pretty clever.
Thank you so much Mike, for such detailed reviews as you usually make! So many things i still have to learn while being 12+ years Sonar user. Good luck with the new channel and let us be with you on this road!
Mike,
Great review. As always, your adept and thorough style of teaching shines through.
Thank you for continuing to provide this content. I am routing for Cakewalk. Currently, I am finishing some projecta in Cakewalk, and, due to the uncertainty of its future, have started all new prohects in Studio One. I appreciate your other page as well.
😊
Very nice. Start/End setting was overdue, so it's nice that this was addressed.
You always show me something new!!!!
I've been beta testing Cakewalk Sonar or the past few months and I love the new features and UI. It's made my workflow a little simpler & faster.
Waiting with great expectation. I have been a Cakewalk user for what seems like the beginning of time.
Thank you Mike 😊
I am glad the offset is back! Great video.
Looking forward to the new version of Cakewalk Sonar. Mike, you are the man! Thanks
Thanks I'm looking forward to the finished product. The only worry is cost.
Great video, Mike! I'm looking forward to having time to get my hands on this new version. It looks like there are quite a lot of quality of life enhancements, while keeping things similar enough to what we're used to without having to re-learn everything.
I'll admit, I miss the pointer finger in the air tapping along to the snare in the intro :) but I can appreciate that you're starting something new. I hope more of your Creative Sauce subsmake their way over here.
I really like the new latency offset feature. Very much appreciated!
Nice little intro to some new features.
Thanks Mike.
Thanks for your tutorials man I started with cakewalk to produce my first song and used your videos to get the best out of it and subsequently was invited to 2 different bands that I went on to record with and play multiple shows. Good stuff man it was that beginning that got me where I am and your helped me get my foot in the door. Thank you thank you
Well done. Great info!! TY!
Thank you Mike! Very informative.
Very welcome
Thanks Mike. Looking forward to the Next video
Looks great!
Love Cakewalk Sonar and have been a user before and during Bandlab's dev involvement and it has been great and the most logical and user-friendly DAW I know of. I also have a MacBook Pro and all the usual suspects, including Logix Pro X, but I am also testing the cross planform compatibility of Next and have had great results so far (although, wishing it had a mix console in it). Would love to also test the version you previewed here, as it keeps just getting better every time. Thanks for starting this channel!
Thanks Mike!!! I've missed the brick wall limiter -I have plenty others but that was my favorite!!
Thank you for this video Mike! So far I don't see anything that would motivate me to switch from the old Cakewalk to the new Sonor.
Nice video! I don't know how I ended up here because I'm more involved with some "other DAW's" but still got curious and watched the video, and I had a good time! It's obvious that you're passionate about Cakewalk and that made it really interesting and fun for me to follow. I really enjoyed the look into the workflow, especially because I'm used to something different.
Always great. Thx.
Thanks Mike for the insight into what is to come. I was quite surprised to see that it is a fairly small evolution from CbB but I suspect that is to make the transition more palatable!
The way your t-shirt matches the mick colours is very satisfying. Oh, and thanks for the video. These new features are an upgrade indeed :)
Like others here, Cakewalk has been the main DAW for many years for me and I hope it stays that way. Appreciate your all your vids on it very much and will continue to down the road, I'm sure. Thanks for sticking with it, too. Here's hoping the new version isn't too pricy. Cheers.
Geat review, thank you Mike.
Good vid. Some cool new features. The automation smoothing will be nice. I'm hoping there will be more keyboard shortcuts than the version it's replacing so that I can add them to my Stream Deck.
Thanks Mike. Watching carefully to the feedback before taking the leap.
Subscription is the better model in my opinion for an application that has regular incremental updates, features and fixes. I'd be happy to subscribe at the right price ofc.
i like the spectrum analyser on each track - nice video, shinnnnnyyyyyy
Cheers Mike!
Actually looks super smart... I would love to see how to use midi articulation maps more comprehensively than I have done! great video mike
Hi Mike, good to see you back!
Thanks for this insight. Looks nice with some interesting new features.
Of course I will hope for quite some more making it worth the switch from CbB, especially regarding my favorite part: the Arranger.
I think CbB lacked some smart "programming" of Sections: like playing multiple (sequences of) Sections back-to-back was selecting one after the other i.o. selecting one giving it a "play x times" option.
I hope that still will be on Sonar's drawing board. It helps my composing/structuring workflow as the overview will be more manageable. I'd elaborated on that on your FB CbB page.
Warm greetings from Amsterdam.
A great early insight to the new version of my favourite DAW. Thanks Mike. 👍
My pleasure Nick :)
Sonar/Cakewalk NEEDS your new channel. Thanks!
Another Great Video!
Great DAW. I have never found a reason to move away from running my pro studio on Cakewalk.
I'm actually a little excited now......some cool features that I didn't know I needed🙂
I like the new crisp look of the UI. 🙂
Really glad your following this for me (us). Can't wait to see more about SONAR, particularly the price! So far it looks like I'm going to dismiss it out of hand just because it has a price tag (everything does) but what it is and how often I have to pay it as you know will make all the difference.
Looks very promising!!
Awesome Vid!!! I have been part of the beta testing, and it’s been great! But I was not aware of the Zip save!!! My only complaint is I am not digging the 2D look. But on the beta message boards, we have been told that a classic theme will soon be available.
Thanks Mike
Thanks brother.
