Honestly, if there was a video WITHOUT chaos I'd suspect some sort of body-double shenanigans. RIP flowers, Pippin is lucky he's so pretty. It must help him get away with a lot.
This was fun, I liked your statistical-analysis way of evaluating these. Microserfs intrigued me so I read the sample on Amazon, but I agree w/ your take. It feels like it would be a lot funnier if you had a background in that kind of work and/or company culture, but doesn't universally translate.

Thanks! Oh no, is chaos my brand 😫
And yes, Pippin can do anything. Even if I'm mad at him one second, he looks at me I just pick him up and give him kisses. I very much reward the bad behavior.

I did a first chapter try-out of my shelves last year and unhauled 20... something... books. I really like this rating system though!! I need to do this again because I have a Zero-TBR goal for this year and I have 70 books to get through.

I've seen a lot of people just rank books after doing the try a chapter tag, but I needed more direction! It was honestly really helpful.

the beginning, where you were finding the books on the shelves, was so chaotic and fun, I couldn't stop smiling!
I read And Then We Came to the End and I remember loving it, though I'm pretty sure I read it after the recession and the big financial crisis, but I wasn't super political at the time so it didn't register for me. I quite loved it and remember quite a bit of it, especially the narrative voice, the first person plural narration - that is so rare (and I think I only ever found it in We Ride Upon Sticks and the first story from Mariana Enriquez's The Dangers of Smoking In Bed. really appreciate that!
I've had The Luminaries on my TBR for so long and you've given me a nudge to read it soon, especially since I was in a bookshop w a friend yesterday and we talked about it + this week it was on the nightstand of another friend! Signs everywhere :P
And you even made me curious about Pillars of the Earth, might add that as well, soon-ish.

Ooh, if you read The Luminaries, I will be watching very closely to see if it really is worth it.
I'm so torn on Then We Came to the End because you're right that the writing style just jumped off the page and it was entertaining, but I also know that I probably won't give it more than a three so that seems just a tiny bit like a waste of time. Also now that I've read the first chapter I sort of feel like I know all I need to know. I've read one other book that did the first person plural and unfortunately it was a real dud. The Good Neighborhood I think it was called? Anyway it wasn't great, but the neighborhood was the narrator.
Oh wait I just googled this and it seems The Virgin Suicides is also told that way, in the form of the brothers as a collective, so I guess that's one more. I didn't realize that We Ride Upon Sticks was first person plural. I own that one!

This was really entertaining! And fun fact - my dad just retired - so he finally has time to read. His whole life he has only read nonfiction or Vonnegut (I mean, respectable taste…), but he just devoured Pillars of the Earth! He loved it. It was wild. He called after he finished to tell me all about it! It was a whole is this man moment?!?

rip vernor vinge; in the book the laws of physics vary over space such that at the edge of the universe superintelligence and faster than light travel are possible while in the galactic core thinking is impossible.
so some people exploring artifacts from the beyond zone awaken a higher power and they flee towards the core. or at least that's kind of where you are at.
personally I think at this point vernor vinge is more relevant than, say, frank herbert. maybe the broader culture will figure this out in the next 5 to 10 years.

I had to read that like five times before I came close to understanding it, but thank you, that helps a little! I'm sure when I get further in to the book it will click into place.

@@theanswerisbooks maybe it was partly cuz I made a typo and said "edge of the universe" when I meant "edge of the galaxy" my bad XD
but yes that is one of the conceits of the zones of thought series of books which includes a fire upon the deep (my favorite of the series is a deepness in the sky by a small margin but I would still say a fire upon the deep is one of my favorite books)

Yay! Another book sniffer. :) I am so glad that you liked Pillars of the Earth because it is amazing. And the fact that you mentioned Edward Rutherfurd is neat too, because I have read most of his books. I have a thing for biiiiiig books, I guess.

I'm really excited to read that book now! It's so long, I don't know when I will fit it in, but it really captured me in just 31 pages. I haven't read an Edward Rutherford book in over two decades, but I remember my time with him fondly lol.

    • @theanswerisbooks
      @theanswerisbooks  5 місяців тому

The actual events of Columbine don't take up that much of the story. I think it's more about the aftermath for these two characters. Wally Lamb loves his trauma recovery.

This was a really fun video and I will probably have to do something similar with some of my books once I unpack them at the new house. It seems like a great way to decide on what to keep and what to unhaul. From what I've heard from good friends who tried to read The Dragonbone Chair and the whole trilogy, you dodged a bullet. Apparently the trilogy is very boring. His later books are supposed to be much better. I have heard a lot of good things about The Pillars of the Earth, and after that curse, I'm moving it up my TBR list. ♍

Yes, I feel like it will be super helpful to you. I was surprised by how helpful I found it.
Also, phew, thanks for the info on Dragonbone Chair. I do have another of his series on my TBR, the Otherlands I think? So maybe I will read that first instead.
The curse was epic, I'm so into it.

If I had known 2 years ago that you like old-school sci-fi paperbacks, you would have an even bigger book problem. I did a massive purge before and after moving, including sci-fi and fantasy books I had bought or been given in the 70's and 80's. Lots of Heinlein, Huxley, and Asimov, plus Anne McCaffrey and CS Lewis and so many more.

And Then We came to the End math seemed wrong - you said Yes it caught your interest it should have been a 2 (yes=2, maybe=1, No=0). However, I think you gave it long enough to get a yes, so fair enough. The scoring should be for the edge cases, and the overall reaction should tell you if you want to read it. Hence the pass on the Vinge SF classic.
I feel you on the dog years for lit fic and historical fic.

    • @theanswerisbooks

Microserfs is funny to anyone who has worked in high tech, but I chose to share my copy with a fellow survivor rather than keep it. If I ever want to re-read, I'll look for an ebook. Another Coupland book, Generation X, should be read physically due to formatting, Also of interest and clever, but not a keeper.
