    A series I never knew in the 90s. Didn't find it till maybe 10 years ago. Almost instantly became my favorite fighting series. Awesome characters and not jerk off hard to pull off moves. Gorgeous graphics. Capcom, make a new Darkstalkers already!

    I was obsessed with this game back in the day. I still wish I had my copy of Diehard Gamefan's strategy guide. It had lots of great artwork and full color pages featuring all the attacks and even some of the animation frames captured.

      @HereticHydra Рік тому +5

      I still have mine but the cover fell off. It was overpriced. It had all of the frame data & hit priority though, which I don't recall any western publication at the time doing anything like that at all, No other western gaming publication took fighting games as seriously as gamefan did.

    Capcom really loved them some Sega Saturn after basically totally ignoring the Sega Genesis, their Saturn output in Japan was insane, and also having the matching cd case spines that really look great, all lined up on the shelf👍

      It's because the Saturn was actually popular in Japan. Genesis was huge in the US but pretty niche in Japan. At least compared to the Super Famicom.

      Tragic, since most of these games could've been amazing on the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. By 1997-98, 40-60 megabit games were commonplace, and 120 megabits was the hard limit of the system. With its chunky pixel 2-pixels-per-byte arrangement, the Genesis could've managed very decent versions of these 2D arcade hits looking and sounding almost as good as the Saturn.
      Worse, the SEGA CD had been out since 1992 and was perfectly capable of 500MB of assets, as well as the arcade scaling, rotation, and warping (and multiple PCM sound channels) to get that outstanding arcade effect three full years before Saturn would hit the market. Making use of the 320x448i mode and changing background and foreground pallets while moving down the screen, roughly 200 colors could be displayed at one time instead of the old 61 out of 512.
      And more Sega CD addons were sold outside of Japan than Saturns even by 1998 when they were all being sold at a loss or put on clearance!

    • @ChaoticHoly
      @ChaoticHoly Рік тому +7

      @@MaxAbramson3 That would be prohibitively expensive on the Genesis, and the SEGA-CD had neither the RAM nor the CD-ROM speed to play this without massive compromises to animation/color/loading/sound. Not to mention that SEGA Japan had washed their hands of the Mega Drive _well_ before 1998.

    When I bought my used Sega Saturn back in 2008, this was one of the games that I decided to purchase with the console along with "Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo". Now that both games are playable on modern cosoles such as the Nintendo Switch, it really saves me the trouble of having to set up my Sega Saturn just to play them, especially since "Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge" has always been my most favorite game in the Darkstalkers series despite most people prefering the third game to come out afterwards.

    Nobody has ever made a more fluid 2D fighting game till this day. And the music is hypnotizing. You can't found these cool sounds anywhere else 😢
    Okamoto talked about this series on his UA-cam channel as well. He didn't said that clearly, but you can assume by what he said they came to Saturn because Sony didn't cared about Capcom too much 😂

Interesting that Sony didn't care much for Capcom considering how big Resident Evil would become, but I also guess this game came before RE, which I recall was Capcoms first really big 3D title, and Sony back then was REALLY all-in on 3D, I recall.

    Hey, SLX!
    I remember playing the first Darkstalkers version back then in the arcades, and when I played this one I was blown away... I loved everything about it, and when it came to the Saturn, I was able to enjoy it at home... And what a GREAT SURPRISE it was, when I found out that we could have both Stage and Character colors and also de music from the first version as well! Man, it's even possible to have everything randomized, it's simply AMAZING!
    One of my favorite fighting games of all time! Darkstalkers 3 might have more characters to choose from, but the Gameplay and the style on this one is much more to my liking...
    AWESOME port, hands down.

    As somebody who would like to start playing Sega Saturn games, this video emphasizes something that’s personally bugging me about the console: so many of its arcade ports (which are supposedly among its best games) were amazing for their time but are basically obsolete now. In the case of the Darkstalkers games: near-perfect emulations of the arcade versions are available for just $1 or $2 through Capcom Arcade Stadium. So, unless you’re a collector, is there any reason to play the Saturn versions here in 2024?

    You are confusing RAM with ROM when you talk about the size of Nightwarriors. The CD-ROM format had adequate space for the entire game and the RAM size of the SATURN and the CPS2 arcade was similar. The problem was moving all of the animation frames through the system cache of a CD-ROM system compared to an arcade machine, which is why animation had to be cut.

      No, I meant it exactly how I said it. Night Warriors is 550 megabits, with half of that being animation alone. The tiny RAM in the Saturn could not hold the animation of 2 characters, so it had to be cut. I know the arcade game itself comes on ROM boards but I was not comparing it in terms of actual storage of the ROM, but how much of the game could be held in the Saturn's memory at one time.

    I bought this game when it came out for my Saturn plus the game fan guide. Still got guide.
