The CPS Trilogy and The King of Dragons push my nostalgia buttons for innovative hack and slash gaming. The era of Street Fighter 2 was a true renaissance for fighting games. Reflecting on these titles isn't just a trip down memory lane for me, but an homage to a transformative period filled with camaraderie and joy in gaming. Great vid as usual!
A half of my childhood's true arcade classics were made on CPS, and my personal Top 5 features Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, King of Dragons, The Punisher, Three Wonders and Saturday Night Slam Masters.
Indeed I think Capcom Arcade Stadium covers most (if not all, certainly stuff based on external IPs didn't make the cut) of these titles, so definitely the best way -- at least legally -- to own all these games! Definitely several of these games would land in various spots on my all time favorite arcade games list!! SF2, Captain Commando, Knights of the Round just to name a few. (except quiz and dragons, who the heck would even know half of these questions? thank goodness for the Quiz and Capcom update in Capcom Classics Collection vol. 2!!)
Great reviews! As much as CPS2 was an improvement, I have so many fond memories of CPS1! Fun fact: Capcom released Megaman Power Battle on both CPS1 & 2! In the US, the CPS2 version never made it past location testing, but in Japan, SA, and I think Asia, it got a proper release. I managed to aquire one of the few US test boards years ago.

this are the kind of videos i watch on repeat while working, you make my day bearable Sega Lord X, you are leaving a great legacy behind with this videos.
Final Fight, Captain Commando and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs were HUGELY popular here in Brazil*, always on bootleg cabinets. You could easily find one of them on street corners in most cities. By the time Punisher came along, Capcom had an official distributor in Brazil (Rockstar) and the original Blue cabinets started to appear. They were more expensive, though, and not as easy to find. But even still, even a seedy bar near my home had two by the entrance, running CPS-2 games. (* Of course, Street Fighter II also was. But that's a whole other story by itself)
Awesome video! This was such an amazing time, Capcom just was killing it back then. I still remember walking around in a mall arcade in the early 90s as a young kid completely oblivious that just one company had made almost all of the games in there that everyone was playing.
I remember the arcade always having the best looking and animated games as a kid. Super Nintendo and Genesis were great but there was nothing like those big sprites at the arcade. I think I just about soiled myself when I saw Xmen vs Street Fighter at the local roller rink. Die Hard Arcade and House of the Dead were other standouts for me. Thanks for sharing!
Nick Fury also appeared in Marvel’s The Avengers alongside Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Black Widow. Kingpin made his debut in Spider-Man: The Animated Series as the 2nd archenemy of Spider-Man (who is also known for being the Sinister Six).
I remember seeing Final Fight in the arcade for the first time. I was in awe of the graphics and the OST. The only time it happen again to me with a 2D game was with Samurai Shodown.
Often said that Knights of the Round remains my favorite Capcom game, whether it was in the arcade or on the SNES I played it religiously. Still do to a degree, often playing as Lancelot.
Lancelot is easily the best character though Arthur isn't bad. I've always found the game to be more challenging with Perceval due to his short reach and poor jump.
A lot of gems in this video. Capcom had a reputation early on for fun games, great graphics, awesome soundtracks and providing a challenging experience. Would have definitely to see a bunch of these games receive home ports.
Awesome vid, love those final words too. I also have my old consoles on in demo mode playing in the background while doing other things. It really is a window to the past that can never be replaced. We really had the greatest era of gaming growing up.
A now-defunct pizza place in St. Louis had several random arcade cabinets; one of them was Three Wonders (the others were Asteroids and a Neo Geo). They were on free-play, too. :D

Awesome retrospective, as always, LordX! Your closing statement pretty much summed up my childhood too. We are so lucky we got to experience something as awesome and unique as this time was. 👍👍
The King of Dragons is one of my absolute favorites of all time! I dropped many coins into that machine as a teenager at the time. Me and a friend were the only two people in our city to beat the game on a single coin and we competed against each other to see who would set the record for the day. Sometimes I would set the record in the morning and it would stand for the entire day. Then my friend would play late in the afternoon and take my record down. I would do the same in return the next day. It was awesome fun. At some point we figured that if we didn't grab the weapons updates at the end of the stages and stuck with the crappiest possible weapons all the way to the end of the game, that means the enemies would need to be hit way more times and that translated into A LOT more points at the end! So we finished it on a single coin and with the crappiest weapons for maximum gains :) But of course, this game is not nearly as hard as Final Fight for example. It wasn't the hardest to beat. Nowadays when I play it in MAME, I need at least half a dozen coins to finish it, since my brain is not as fresh. Still a ton of fun though, all those years later!
I vividly remember being in a Put Put Golf arcade and seeing Final Fight for the first time. It absolutely blew everything away I knew about video games.
I had a bunch of FF's in my area in the early 90's which are now all gone, and one location was a movie theater that opened in 1989 near me an AMC but they have no arcade games now, and the other place a hot dog place in the shopping center by the movie theater near me which is now a Kumon learning center, the Final Fight was in the back right of the hod dog place in the 90's. I saw an article in a game magazine in 1990 about the upcoming Super Famicom in Japan which was released Nov 1990 and there was an article on the Super Famicom Final Fight which originally had the Industrial Area on the map, but appeared to to be a one player and only Cody and Haggar. When I saw the arcade for the first time I thought it was one of the best arcade games besides the original TMNT by Konami at the time. But, when the SNES FF came out, I got the SNES and FF as a gift from my late mom Dec 25, 1991 who passed last June 14, 2022 in the hospital because her lungs were weak, and I played FF I was disappointed. I took our new SNES down to my aunt and uncle's house (my mom's only sister) they lived 45 miles away from me and they have a son and daughter and my male cousin played Super Mario World, FF and Sim City on SNES and they had an NES with Mario Bros. 3 in another room. My uncle passed away March 31 to strokes.
If it wasn't for the CPS Changer, SFZ having unencrypted keys, we may have never decrypted the keys and the games lost to the cps suicide battery dying. It's great to see all of these games preserved 30 years later.
Capcom were definitely up there with Sega in the arcades and I have such great memories of Street Fighter 2 and played every version of that legendary game, I didn’t get to play most of these capcom games until the Capcom classics collection compilations on PS2 and PSP, great video and one of my favourites from you.
Was Sega really that big in American arcades at that time? I know they were in Japan but I seem to recall Capcom and Konami games being dominant in American arcades.
Played Final Fight in the arcades with my sister and brother as kids. Still fun to play to this day. Street Fighter 2 was just insane when we saw a group of people hanging around. We wanted to see what they were playing but couldn't because of the massive people around it but all we heard was, "hadoken" and people cheering or yelling.😂 I remember when they had it on a huge screen in a pizza parlor and I was pretty much in awe when I saw it.
The CPS1 board basically defined my childhood. I recall the first time I saw Final Fight and SF2… man… it was a major point in gaming history and I’m so glad I was there for it. I always found it funny they renamed Area 88 to UN Squadron. If you read the manga/saw the OVA you’d know area 88 was the furthest thing from being UN friendly 🤣
You know you have to make a CPS2 and CPS3 video now. I wish I could get Sega Model 2 and Model 3 games to work on Raspberry Pi I miss some of those titles.
I loved Forgotten Worlds. In my mind they made a couple more, but i guess they are just different versions! Still, if they ever brought it back, I wouldn't mind
I lived near a Nickel City arcade, owned by Capcom in the 90s, which meant the arcade was crammed with as many Capcom games as you could fit in that building. You paid like $1.50 for admission, and the old CPS1 games were free-to-play, I was able to play most of these games before the advent of PC emulation. Thanks for the nostalgia trip
Very beautiful video, discoverd 1-2 games that i didn´t know. I am always jealous of American and Japanese arcades. In Germany there was no, only a mixture of slot casino/arcade that could only be entered from the age of 18. Like video rental stores, too. There were a few exceptions, but they were really rare. Which is also clear, if you do 70-80% of sales with XXX or slots. The gambling addiction and youth protection law at the time were really bad, for me (Or not? money that I did not put in arcades, went directly to Mega Drive games ^^) I can count a hand how often I gambled arcade video machines in my youth. Only on vacation in Spain (where my brother almost killed me with an Outrun machine), France or Australia (Sega World was so awesome...) and on the annual fun fair. For which I had saved my pocket money to play Shinobi, Mercs and all the other cool games. 3-4 years after I was finally 18 and was able to get into a arcade, that was at the time when Daytona, Ridge Racer appeared, 95% of all arcades kicked out the video games and are on pure casino. Without emulation, I would never have seen a large part of the exclusive arcade games. Neo-Geo i only discoverd, because i buyed an used around 94/95
UN Squadron was called Area 88 in Japan and was based on a well known manga series about a mercenary air force. Many of the game mechanics such as players buying weapons from a dealer shop between levels make a lot more sense in the original game where the characters are soldiers of fortune than then do in the western localized version where they are supposed to be regular military. The name was changed in the west for licensing reasons. If you wondered why the title screen has that weird unicorn logo, it's the roundel Shin uses on his aircraft in the manga. In the western version it just seems kind of weird and out of place but it totally makes sense in the Japanese version.
I remember playing some of these games, on MAME. In fact, I played some of them when I was in college, back at fall of 2000-2002. They were pretty good, for the era they were released in. I would like to see more coverage of games running on specific arcade hardwares, like the SEGA arcade games that use specific hardware as well as CPS2 and CPS3.
Big fan of CPS games...there was just something about that art style that just clicked with me as someone who draws and paints a lot. Plus I alway's loved Sega's Megadrive take on their games even though they could never quite capture the meatiness of the originals.
Lovely retrospective on one of the great arcade platforms. I was just watching another video about Strider before this, and am now in the mood to play it. I want to cover several points, but I'll try to be brief on each. -I'd actually put Cadillacs & Dinosaurs as the best beat-em-up of this bunch over the Punisher. But they're both such high quality and very close overall that either one is a fine pick. Punisher looks a bit better, but C&D's music is really strong, and the gameplay feels just a bit better for my style, but the gameplay is top notch in both games. I didn't expect either one to be as good as they are. -I didn't expect to like Dynasty Wars all that much, but I had a really great time with it. I've played both the arcade and PC Engine versions, and both have their good points. I view it as more of a straight action game rather than a beat-em-up and like to make that distinction so that those who haven't played it don't expect a more traditional beat-em-up. But that's not a nitpick of anything in the video. I find the game a lot of fun and it was a wonderful surprise. -I have tried a bunch of times, but I just don't get on well with King of Dragons. I wanted to like it, but the lack of combos kills it for me, and viewing it as something else, like I do for Dynasty Wars, doesn't help. But it has a really strong soundtrack that is one of Capcom's best FM soundtracks. -I had an up-and-down relationship with Knights of the Round. I liked it at first, and then I just had trouble getting back into it. A lot of that was on my end, though(insomnia and all that). I revisited the game two years ago almost exactly. I finally learned how to block reliably. I also tweaked the difficulty down a bit to where it felt right. And I ended up having a wonderful time with it and couldn't stop playing. I played it over and over over the next couple of weeks. It's one of my favorites now. The FM soundtrack is also good, though the loops are a bit short so that might be an issue for some. -Speaking of FM sound, the cool thing about the first Mega Man arcade game is that it is really a CPS2 game backported to CPS1, probably to make it easier for some arcade operators during the transition. That means there's the CPS2's PCM soundtrack and the CPS1 with an FM rendition, and they both sound very good. The CPS2 version seemed to have a few more sound samples, but that didn't amount to much when I looked into it. I know a similar scenario happened with Street Fighter Alpha when they released it for the CPS Changer, likely done for cost reasons since the Changer was just a supergun. That situation also happened with the X68000 and Super Street Fighter 2.
Warriors of Fate is very underrated. Alien vs Predator is arguably Capcom's best beat em up (Final Fight is timeless imo), and AvP's gameplay is one half Punisher (guns) and one half WoF (input command-based specials and combos). Anyone who likes AvP shouldn't overlook WoF
Awesome find that Craig, massive bonus if they work but at least you have the skills to fix them My eyes lit up when you unwrapped a Raiden, love that game, the arcade vab would be amazing. Top stuff and hood luck testing them 👍✌️
Another fantastic video from you. I enjoyed watching it although the ads from UA-cam that pop up every 6 minutes into the video are very annoying. UA-cam's algorithm for ads is really bad now, used to be able to buffer the player forward in the certain spots where the ads would pop up to trigger them and then scroll back to the start of the video and watch it all the way through without any interruptions but can't do that now.
The games I've played the most were 1941: Counter Attack, Captain Commando and MERCS. But especially Captain Commando. It's one of my favourite games of all time and one of my favourite CAPCOM games EVER.
Street Fighter 2, Final Fight etc, that cps board is legend.👍😄 Being small at that time, and seeing those games in the arcade, especially the cps games, was a real blast.👍😄

Great video! I would have loved to see the CPS version of the first entry in the Street Fighter Zero series covered as well… however it is not exclusive to the platform, as it’s also been released on CPS2…
Gotta thank the hilarious Street Fighter 2: Rainbow Edition bootleg for giving Capcom the idea to make Hyper Fighting after seeing how increasing the speed made the game even more fun
Man lot of memories in the arcade with Capcom's CPS system hardware and the game that shocked me of all was the old mighty Final Fight I mean when I saw that game in the arcade I was in awe with the graphics and music specially The Bay area level. The other to games that makes it impact in my childhood were Strider, Captian Commando, Magic Sword, Knights of the round, UN Squadron which is known as Area 88 based on the Japanese manga and of course the mighty Street fighter 2 more specific the Champion Edition version. Capcom definitely was on fire and roar in 80's and 90's in the arcades.

Arcade nostalgia from SLX and Game Sack on the same day. I'm in heaven! Now to go play some of these on my Steam Deck.
You know you have to make a CPS2 and CPS3 video now. I wish I could get Sega Model 2 and Model 3 games to work on Raspberry Pi I miss some of those titles.
Your videos are always just the best. Your commentary, information, everything is always spot on.
I absolutely love my Darksoft CPS1, CPS2 and CPS3 multi kits. Expensive but worth every penny. Best way to play
Lots of great memories with CPS games. Thanks for putting this video together.
Takes me way back when i had the reflexes to play those games lol.
SLX, you’re awesome. Thanks for showing me the greatness of 16 and 32 bit systems!
I loved Forgotten Worlds. In my mind they made a couple more, but i guess they are just different versions!
Still, if they ever brought it back, I wouldn't mind
There was a lot of similar games. SCAT, Abadox and Burai Fighter on the NES alone. Inthink there's other similar games too.
@@Gatorade69 Sidearms for example. Burai Fighter is mad underrated imo
forgotten worlds was a great game
@@richardburton4625 yeah great game indeed
On twin sticks now it would be great
The Punisher, i had so much fun playing that game.
The gambling addiction and youth protection law at the time were really bad, for me (Or not? money that I did not put in arcades, went directly to Mega Drive games ^^)
I can count a hand how often I gambled arcade video machines in my youth.
I appreciate ways getting to see some games in your videos I have not seen in action before! Quality content to help setup emu consoles :)
I’m glad I now own a lot of these on various collections
Great video and I hope there will be a sequel for CPS2 and 3 games!
Superb video, sir!!
Many thanks.
Wow commando and ghosts and Goblins ! The memories are flooding back thanks 😁👌
Big fan of CPS games...there was just something about that art style that just clicked with me as someone who draws and paints a lot. Plus I alway's loved Sega's Megadrive take on their games even though they could never quite capture the meatiness of the originals.
As much as I love your sega content, your arcade videos are my favorites. Would love to see a follow up CPS2 and CPS3 video from this
Definitely as there are many games great games missing.
I'm happy to see this video after watching your Neo Geo video. :)
Thanks for something long-form yet engaging.
Another amazing video. You sure do love video games from the 80s-90s era!
CPS2 followup please! Great video, enjoyed hearing your thoughts on Capcom's arcade heyday.
Regarding Magic Sword….
“Evacuate me!”
“Get me escape!”
“Take me out!”
Awesome find that Craig, massive bonus if they work but at least you have the skills to fix them
My eyes lit up when you unwrapped a Raiden, love that game, the arcade vab would be amazing.
For me all these games are timeless master pieces. Compilations like Capcom classics collection 1 & 2 are awesome!
The games I've played the most were 1941: Counter Attack, Captain Commando and MERCS. But especially Captain Commando. It's one of my favourite games of all time and one of my favourite CAPCOM games EVER.
I gotta say it was great how close Genesis ports came to arcade originals on this hardware.
Great vid, the follow up will take awhile since there were so many titles on it.
This collection was my favorite of that era. Capcom at its peak definitely.
Love their CPS and their games, kudos for these guys making an absolute golden arcade games
Imagine if this had been consolized for the home market, like the Neo Geo
Didn’t they? I remember reading it was mail order only and had a Super Nintendo controller port
It was. ----> 35:33
I have seen a capcom fighting stick with games.
Street Fighter 2, Final Fight etc, that cps board is legend.👍😄
Being small at that time, and seeing those games in the arcade, especially the cps games, was a real blast.👍😄
great video brought back so much good memories but you forgot a hidden gem! the third installment of muscle bomber, know as muscle bomber - the body explosion. its a really good game too!
Excellent as ever! Can’t wait for the CPS2 video!
I'm working on it. It's massive.
Man the memories... I was OBSESSED with Final Fight
21:06 CAPtain COMmando I always assumed the name came from this game but apparently it is not (CAPsule Computer or something like that).
LOVE THIS VIDEO! One of your best 😀👌👍
