The Sega Genesis port of The Adventures of Batman & Robin remains my favorite Batman game. Love everything about it from which it’s based on to the action & gameplay, presentation, to the industrial type soundtrack.

Batman Forever was far from perfect, there were ideas that went into it that I still question to this very day...some of the moves were impossible to perform w/o a ton of practice...I still recall reading that one review on Amazon years ago where the guy summed it up perfectly... *It would be like having to press 6 buttons just to toss a single grenade in Ghost Recon or Call Of Duty*...But this game hits very differently for me, while it was hard, it was pretty fun to play...The training mode was also pretty cool... me & my sister would play it so we could learn these near-impossible moves for weapons so fourth ...But hey, thanks for the upload ...This vid brings back a ton of great memories for me brother! :)

I so well remember "Batman Dark Tomorrow" (2003) as that was a game with tons of potentials and had a great art-work and comic book feeling.
The game could have been a classic, but the gameplay and controls where awfull. So much that I remember playing it on-and-off because you could early on not advance.
But I remember after about my 5th attemp on taking on the game back in the day made it and went on to beat the game.
I managed to figure out a perfect way to defeat all enemies and bosses with well-timed kicks with-out taking serious damage as this method was THE ONLY way to win.
I could then look-aside this major flaw of poor controls and poor fighting mechanic to appreciate the dark athmosphere and story development and enjoy the great looking cut-scenes. I also got both endings in the game. This game was meant to be a love letter to the 90's Batman comics!

For those you said you didn't mention since you have never played them and wanted to hear abou them:
As a child I was absolutely in love with "Batman The Movie" on our Amiga 500, it was, at least in my opinion, one of the very first really good Batman games, it may only have had 4 or 5 levels, but it was pretty diverse in terms of gameplay, it started as a classic plattformer but also had vehicle sections with the Batwing and the Batmobile.

    - You could slide under fire to escape or attack.
    - If you hold the fire button you can charge the shot for the loaded weapon, with different effects.
    - And if you shoot the power ups when they fall you can cycle through the different weapons to pick the most convenient.

I remember playing the original Batman game on the GameBoy and absolutely loving it! It was such an underrated action title for the system! It is a shame Return of the Joker on the Genesis didn't get the same development treatment as the NES version!
I also wish Konami had developed a '90s arcade Batman beat-em-up for the arcades. They were well-known for their quality beat-em-ups and I could see it being like an even better version of Batman Returns on the SNES with added co-op and other enhancements.

    • @WeskerSega

Konami got ahold of the Batman Returns license on the Nintendo console systems (even though they never released a Game Boy game, who knows what happened there) and a couple of computer platforms, more especifically the PC (with a graphic adventure) and the Amiga (with a sidescroller), so it seems logical they may have pursued an arcade game but maybe some license issues prevented this to happen (maybe the fact that Atari Games had the license for the previous movie arcade and may have had some kind of preference of doing the sequel; coincidentially, the non-related Atari Corporation made a Batman Returns game for their Lynx). They probably would have get rights for at least a Mega Drive game, since they were starting to get interest on the system, but maybe that conflicted with Sega getting the license for all their systems, including the Master System and Game Gear, which were not under the interest of Konami. This was probably some kind of licensing wars going on.

Maybe it's happy coincidence that I just finished uploading my playthrough of Batman: The Video Game before stumbling onto this but Batman focused video by SLX is just what I needed as a nice nightcap.
I must say that it's also happy coincidence or maybe it's fate that the best Batman games are the ones with Michael Keaton and Kevin Conroy (R.I.P.) which many would argue are the best to portray Batman in their respective media. I wonder if SLX has played Gotham Knights. I don't think it got good reviews but from what little I've seen of it the game looks similar to the excellent Arkham games.

For everything said against Batman Forever: The Arcade Game, when my best friend visits, we often play it, soak in the cheese and have a great time. We don't know what the hell's going on, bosses strip our life bars away in a single combo and we rarely get to the end before running out of continues, yet we still have a smile on our faces the entire time. That alone makes it one of my favourite Batman games, even if it's lacking in a lot of areas.

What a great video and a great idea! A bit late but i'll add my two cents in:
I'm surprised one of the greatest Batman games was not mentioned here ''Batman Returns'' for the Sega Master System. That was the only Batman game I had growing up as I only had a Master System in those early years. That game was developed by Aspect and had music by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima from SOR fame. It was better than the Game Gear port on account of the levels being much larger to explore and the route select branching system gave the game more replay value for it's time.
I would have to agree with you SLX when talking about the Mega Drive/Genesis Batman games. Batman 1991 by Sunsoft really is the best one! The Adventures Of Batman & Robin is a beautiful looking game but I refuse to play it without game genie invincible cheats, i'm too old now to learn the game's mechanics and strengths and weaknesses by replaying it over and over getting endless game overs, I work hard, come home and want a quick 1 hour invincible thrill ride through this game before I go to bed. The problem with Batman Forever is that it starts getting a little repetitive and boring after a while as all you do is beat up bad guys and walk around. I can't really comment on the Arkham Batman games as they came out later in time on consoles I do not own or care for.

I do love a good Batman game. Ocean Software (UK Publisher/developer) did three different Batman games for the UK market - the first (simply known as Batman) was a bizzare isometric platform puzzler released in 1986 for the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC computeters. It was later ported to the Japanese MSX. Very odd- but historically important as it was the very first Batman game for any platform. It was later remade for Windows, which you can find free on the web.
Ocean's 2nd effort was Batman: The Caped Crusader which came out on various computer platforms. This time, it was much more faithful to the comic books, and had two distinct adventures - one against the Joker and one against the Penguin.
Ocean finally knocked it out of the park with their3rd Batman title - Batman the Movie. This followed a similar structure to their previous RoboCop game from the year before, with different scenes making up different levels. Level One is a Side-scrolling platforming level, with Batman making his way through Axis Chemicals to stop Jack Napier, who becomes the Joker. Level Two is the escape from the Muesum via the Batmobile. On 8-bit machines, this was done via a side-scrolling slightly isometric view, but on the more powerful 16-bit machines, it was presented as a fast Outrun-style race. Level three was a puzzle, as Batman works out what products make up Smilex Gas, and then your're behind the controls of the Batwing for Level Four, in the same way as the Batmobile level. And finally for Level Five, Batman has to make his way up Gotham Cathederal to stop the Joker, in another side scolling platformer.
It's incredibly primitive gameplay compared to the Sunsoft adaption, but it sold massively, not least because it was included as a pack-in with the mighty Commodore Amiga 500, which had the best version of the game. I still enjoy it.

Batman Dark Tomorrow was actually developed by Hot Gen Studios (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles). They, in a way, redeemed themselves a bit as they also developed the 2D action platformer Plug N Play based on the 2004 The Batman cartoon, and that was actually pretty decent overall.
As for Batman & Robin on PS1? I really have to give developer Probe Entertainment (X-Men Children Of The Atom, Die Hard Trilogy) props for this game. Yes it's based on the AWFUL Batman and Robin movie and yes it came out about a year after the film hit theaters BUT, in all seriousness, they legitimately put 100% REAL EFFORT into this game to not only try to make it a good movie based game but just a good Batman game in general. They went VERY ambitious with it and it definitely shows, even though the end product couldn't fully match their ambition. Think about it. It was the year 1998 and this is a 3rd person open world (yes OPEN WORLD) Batman game where you have a fully explorable Batcave, you had numerous vehicles to drive in the Batmobile, Batsled, Robincycle, etc (equipped with their own weapons) around Gotham City and get in and out of them and stop crimes being committed at anytime, you had to find and pick up clues and actually decipher them to find out where Freeze and Ivy would turn up and strike next, you can play with Batman, Robin and Batgirl each with their own specific attributes, moves and animations, you had a good amount of bat gadgets to use, it had a day and night system/cycle where things would happen at random times, etc.
When you take a step back you realize that they really went all in on this title, and again, I absolutely have to commend Probe for it. To go this all out on a movie based game, and a movie that is/was WIDELY despised, is truly praiseworthy. The thing is though is unfortunately the final product is very rough around the edges, the camera can be a real pain, the game is VERY DARK (crank up the brightness when playing this one), and the hand to hand combat isn't great. If Probe would have taken some more time with it and iron everything out it would have been one of the very best Batman games to have ever come out. The Arkham Asylum of its day. Yes, I'm not even joking. Or if it had come out on more powerful hardware that could have handled all the mechanics and aspects of it like say the Dreamcast...ugh, what a missed opportunity.

I _think_ it was a C64 game first, though I played it on the Atari ST. It's an interesting take as it's not a tie in, and has an interesting art style where each room of the game is viewed like a comic panel, with captions providing hints, otherwise it's a puzzle game, all about finding inventory items and using them to progress.

The C-64 "Batman - The Movie" game was quite good within the limitations of the system. The grappling-hook-and-batarang platforming gave players a fair amount of movement freedom, and there was variety between platformer, vehicle, and puzzle levels. The music was also excellent.
