My father used to watch me playing Splatterhouse 3, he also used to say that he loved the ambience of the game and the thrill he felt while watching the gameplay, he either loved that the character of the game looked like Jason! Those were great days, these are great memries!
Modders have recently made a version of this game that adds the blood splatters back in during attacks and kills, as well as an overall improved color palette.
If you're talking about the "Bloody Edition", that was me! It was the first and only "hack" I ever made, just a simple color swap to reinstate the red blood color, as originally intended by the developers (who said so in interviews). If I ever have time and the ability, I will do the same for Splatterhouse 2.
I loved this game as a teenager. My mom didn’t want me playing violent games like this or Mortal Kombat, so playing this over a friends house gave it that added “forbidden fruit” appeal. It was one of the bloodiest games I’d ever seen at the time. As far as negatives, the special moves were too difficult to be worth it and the timer was laughably too fast each level. I’m sure if I had time to beat it more than once, I’d have gotten better than the worst possible ending, but a win’s a win. Still a great game.
The opening of Splatterhouse 3 is absolute phenomenal, and it’s one a 16-bit console of all things. Even Rick’s terror mask is awesome. Not to mention, that the body horror in this game is downright ridiculous here.
It was definitely a good game. I didn't regret getting it, for sure. I was about 12 when I had it and even at that age some of the music and levels creeped me out, haha
Another one of the great games that helped make the Genesis what it was. Its powerful 68000 CPU, sound, and 512 colors made it possible to bring awesome gore fest games home to play with others and gross out your sister... or your friend's sister.
@@jasonlee781661 colors per line out of a palette of 512, or 108 out of 1536 in Shadow/ Highlight Mode. Travler's Tales managed 145 out of 3,375 and later managed 512 onscreen at one time.
Completely underrated series, I love all Splatterhouse games. They are gruesome, relentless and don't shy away from heartbreaking endings that punch you right in the nuts. Even the Remake on PS3/360 (play the 360 one!) is awesome with a killer Soundtrack from Terrorizer and other Grindcore / Death Metal Bands. Such a shame it never gained enough popularity....
I probably should have learned that before I completely gave up on this game,as I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I couldn't stand being unable to make any better times then I seemed able to.
I love the fact that the protagonist looks like a horror villain himself, and yet, he's a family man. A father protecting his wife and kid; how wholesome. 😊
Otherwise known as "that nonlinear Splatterhouse game with demanding time pressure that constantly interrupted gameplay with disturbing imagery to remind the player to hurry up."
This game was a pleasantly scary surprise that I discovered while ROM-surfing during my broke college student days. I think the gross monsters and beat-em-up mechanics are pretty awesome, though some of the settings in the house are also neat too...though I do have to admit, some of them are pretty boring (my favorites are Mike's room, the eldritch temple at the last level, and the balcony where you start the second level) Some work on these areas would've improved things. You get a pretty awesome move set, a gross ambient horror, and awesome creature designs. I'm also biased for this game as well because I was born in and spent most of my life in Connecticut. The state is actually high on the paranormal scale in terms of events; you'd also be surprised how many indie horror games take place in Connecticut too! The FAITH series, Mortuary Assistant and a third one I can't remember had settings there (the latter most was a surreal game that was in Ashford, CT) And of course Rick and family moved there, that's where all the rich jerks go 😂
As a european I'm kinda curious now, does Connecticut have a reputation for ghosts / hauntings / supernatural events in the US? Is it frequently used in famous horror stories, or is there some other reason it's so frequently featured?
I liked the second better, because you put in the work beat the game, you get the ending. Simple. None this "Do everything in this order, in this amount of time to get the *real* ending!" business.
Julie Bell, a protege of Boris Vallejo, did the artwork for the box art. If either names sound familiar, they both did art for the magazine Heavy Metal. I felt that should be mentioned
This has become my fave game in the Splatterhouse series. I like the proto-Resident Evil design. It's like the missing link between beat'em ups and survival horror games.
This is my fav splatter house of the 3 for the added gameplay, music & sounds. The cartridge board looks like a bootleg with the epoxy blobs over the chips but its actually authentic
Splatterhouse 3 otherwise known as the Sega Genesis game whose visual effects scared 😱 or grossed out your sister, female cousins, mother and grandmother.
I knew about Splatterhouse series thanks to this game, it was the first one I played. The violence it produces really impressed me at the time, so that gory vibe it was enough for me to never care about the poor backgrounds. I can't imagine how much gory it will turn today if Namco will ever release it as an updated version with some really spooky and bloody backgrounds.
There was actually was a modern Splatterhouse reboot, it came out for PS3/360 back in 2010 and defintly worth checking out if your a fan of the series. It was actually pretty good and instead of a side-scrolling beat'em up it played more like a God of War/Darksiders. definitely kept up the scary ambiance and levels of violence (also had a great soundtrack featuring a ton of death metal songs). But it didn't really sell that well, so it unfortunetly never got a sequel and was quickly forgotten about.
This was a game I was SO looking forward to as a kid, as I loved the orignal two but always felt them just a bit lacking compared gameplay wise to other similar games...So when I heard there was a third game coming out and it was changing things up and supposedly a bit more complex gameplay, I was over the moon. Alas, the game implemented one of my personal biggest gaming pet peeves, a time limit and a extremely strict time limit at that! I get that time limit is supposed to make things more intense and convey a sense of urgency, but in my case it came across as more of a detriment and a con instead of a pro. As trying to keep up with the crazy time limit made it much harder to enjoy all the cool artwork, enemies, and music that were always a big part of what made Splatterhouse series so fun and unique. Plus, it made most of the house kind of pointless, as if your really wanted the best ending there was really only one "right" path to take. I would've much rather have been able to go around the house and explore it. I mean, I know you don't necessarily "have" to try and get the best ending, and part of the fun is trying to get all the endings, but it's never fun to play and finish a game knowing you really didn't actually "beat" it. While overall I think the game is good, at the same time I think it had the potential to be even better and feels like they shot themselves in the foot by trying to deliver a more engaging and immersive experience. Things don't always work out like we plan, and I applaud them for attempting something different, as it's obvious that a ton of effort and passion went into the creation of this game. I think that's what makes this game so frustrating and disappointing despite it being an actual good game. You just know that there's so much effort put into it, but because of a design choice some people love and some people hate, it's made the game so decisive and taken away the attention off of, and made it hard to enjoy, all the good aspects of the game.
I remember how sad it was when I learned that the game was not going to see a release in Europe. Had to wait until I had a PC that could run emulators.
Man i had nightmares of this game especially when Jennifer got infected by that boreworm. The scary face, the creepy music, the monster filled mansion had 6 year old me staying up terrified!!!
Splatterhouse 3 still holds up perfectly today, i still go back to it quite often, i never noticed any lack of detail with the backgrounds but maybe that's because i'm having so much fun with the combat that i've never payed it any mind, also fun fact- you can cheese your way through the entire game with that spin kick move, the AI can't avoid it so you can spam that move to win against anything on the game.
This is perfect and just in time for Halloween! Awesome video as always Sega Lord X. I was thinking about getting into the Spatterhouse series, looks like spooky beat em up fun!
This game uses a map and there's much more to explore than the other 2. Each level is kind of a maze so it's normal that some backgrounds may look repetitive.
The original was one of my favourites in the arcade, loved them all even the new game that came out on the Xbox 360, wouldn't mind going back to play it.
It's interesting that they decided to change the inputs to be more like a 2D-fighting game, because the original Japanese version used button combinations instead, which I find much easier to pull off. They also buffed the spin kick in the western version, making it so overpowered that the best way to take down enemies is to spam it. In the Japanese version, it's good for crowd control but it doesn't do anywhere near as much damage. I didn't know about the rumors of the game being toned down for the MA-13 rating, but if that's true, I hope a prototype with gorier backgrounds gets discovered some day.
this game was so heavily advertised in gaming magazines back in the day and as a non sega kid back then, it made me jealous, it looked so edgy and gory and gross and looked so so so much better than the first two, like it was the edgy younger brother of them...this and Chakan are now a couple of my fave genesis games.
Sega Lord X is the oracle of all things Sega and Splatterhouse 3 is probably the best game in the series for the most part but they could have done better with the graphics with the 16 megs they had to work with but I feel that the music while good, isn’t as memorable as part 1 and 2 in my opinion, anyway great review as always with your amazing attention to detail.
I remember renting this from Blockbuster only because my grandma did not know any better lol, it genuinely freaked me out being a 12 year old and playing it in the dark.
It's funny how much you hate the backgrounds. My longest lasting memory of this game was walking into a room with no enemies and a skinned corpse hanging from the ceiling that drops for a jump scare when you approach. I think you find the meat cleaver in that room. Pretty epic set dressing if you ask me!
Splatterhouse has been a favorite of mine ever since I was 6 or so years old. I make it a tradition of mine to beat all 4 classic games every Halloween. There is something special about these games. Perhaps it is that it brings things down to a relatable scale. If your wife and son were being attacked by demons, would you not put do anything you possibly could to save them?
This game scared the begeezus out of me as a kid. I had nightmares of the first boss with the hand coming out its neck grabbing me and swallowing me whole. Good times
Good review! May have to check this one out! I liked the first two games, so this looks like an interesting twist on those especially with a timer to add a bit more pressure. It is a shame this one doesn't have as much level variety as before. Though, those monster grunts and screams sound pretty ear-grating. They sound like digitized burps! 😆
Even with all its flaws, I still love this game. I don't go into it to get the best ending or even beat it. Just to kick some gory monster butt. Rick and the monster's design is great. The atmosphere the game has was quite spooky when I was young when the game 1st came out. The music fits great with the game too.
One of the first games I can remember that actually did scare me, I’d play this and Chakan on sega and listen to Ringmaster from ICP and that was my 8 year old life.
Looking back, I do wish more of the levels were spent in other locations especially given the multiple paths system they had. Five/Six levels were fine but the first two should've taken place in their home, third could be a forest themed level, fourth should be more sewer-like and fifth had that dark temple/cave look going.
I... Just don't understand why people are so positive about this game. I absolutely love the first game. The second one and the 2010 reimagining are pretty good as well. And while Wanpaku Graffiti is just a parody, and doesn't have the deepest gameplay, it's fun for what it is. Splatterhouse 3 is... Just a bad game. And I don't understand why people don't think this. The hitboxes are really wonky, the later bosses do almost nothing but just evade. Not to mention the gore is turned waaaay down, and all the stages are just incredibly generic rooms with the same enemies all over without any rhyme or reason. The old games had hand-crafted stages with creepy designs and enemy patterns that were specifically thought out both in terms of visuals and challenge. Also most enemies have an unnecessary amount of health, and one attack button is just not enough for a beat 'em up like this.
@SLX I was wondering if you could maybe make a video regarding the issue of sound on the Sega Genesis throughput it’s lifecycle. I noticed that early on games had such beautiful music and sounds but it seems (at least imo) that sound seemed to get worse over time on the Genesis. Why is that? Did that somehow stem from the follow up iterations of the console or was it the programmers or?
Not a bad idea. To answer your question quickly, it was the influx of western developers who had no experience with FM synth. Early Genesis software all came from Japan. Those were mostly arcade developers who knew FM synth well. Then a deluge of US/European devs came in and used tools like GEMS to very poor results.
Very true. To add insult to injury, Matt Furniss (who was one of the very few western sound artists that DID sound good on the hardware) left Krisalis in early 1995 to go and work for Psygnosis, so from that point on many UK devs like Probe who always hired him to do the audio had to start using GEMS or an identical version of GEMS and it got to the point where GEMS just took over everything. Had Matt stayed on board for another year I dare say games like ''Mortal Kombat 3, Batman Forever and Bugs Bunny Double Trouble'' would have had music by Krisalis - Matt Furniss instead of the dead-boring GEMS. The over saturation of GEMS really started sometime around 1993/1994.
Yeah I loved this one. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU RUN DOWN THE CLOCK ON THE FINAL BOSS? The timer is crazy long. I couldn't stay alive long enough to find out.
I rented this game from Blockbuster, once. Didn't impress me enough to buy it. SOR2 is my favourite Sega MegaDrive (Genesis) game so O like beat 'en ups.
We never got this in the UK (you could play it officially on the New Splatterhouse as an extra however). Recently i imported a copy from the US and I love it... Not as good as the previous games but still great.
My father used to watch me playing Splatterhouse 3, he also used to say that he loved the ambience of the game and the thrill he felt while watching the gameplay, he either loved that the character of the game looked like Jason!

Also most enemies have an unnecessary amount of health, and one attack button is just not enough for a beat 'em up like this.
Greetings from Poland!
Happy Halloween!
Not gonna lie, growing up, I definitely thought we were playing as Jason Vorhees 😂
splatter 3 is best of the orginal trilogy. I much more love the beat em up play as opposed to the simple unsatisfying one tap kills of 1 and 2.
Seizure warning at 1:30
anyone who had epilepsy or anything plz be careful.
Yeah I loved this one. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU RUN DOWN THE CLOCK ON THE FINAL BOSS? The timer is crazy long. I couldn't stay alive long enough to find out.
Long live Rick ! Also FM synth
Playing this classic along with other classics today. Emulator is fantastic. Save states make it all better
Rick from Splatterhouse always reminded me of Jason Voorhees.
This seems like a fun beat ‘em up.
This looks so freakin' awesome.
Splatterhouse 3 was my first horror game ever and it scared the bajesus out of me to play. I was a kid back then.
Same. It did pretty good job to make you feel nervous all the time
happy halloween Sega Lord X!!
I rented this game from Blockbuster, once.
Didn't impress me enough to buy it.
SOR2 is my favourite Sega MegaDrive (Genesis) game so O like beat 'en ups.
Japan version is the way to go. The US version has questanable combat balance, where you basicaly forced to spam roundhouse kick attack over and over.
We never got this in the UK (you could play it officially on the New Splatterhouse as an extra however).
Recently i imported a copy from the US and I love it... Not as good as the previous games but still great.
