Russell, that was such a powerful lesson! There was so much said that deserves more detailed attention. This video could spawn 6 more. Let me count the ways. 1.) Controlling where you strike the ground, 2.) The role of the left arm in keeping width, 3.) The role of the right arm in keeping width, 4.) Proper position at impact to "cover" the ball, 5.) Retracting the left shoulder blade at the finish, 6.) Controlling the face throughout the swing. These are all important, but I like your emphasis on swing width throughout with the rest of these things playing a supporting role. The one I've never heard about is the retraction of the lead shoulder. I look forward to more videos.

Focusing on width changes my game completely. My backswing became smoother, my tempo was much more consistent but perhaps most the most important improvement with regard to width was my ability to release the club properly and get my lead shoulder retracted. Focusing on width slowed down my tempo to a manageable and therefore consistent moment of impact with a square club face. Thank you again! Your videos seem to be impeccably times to my most current issue. Uncanny

True so very true. This is where that effortless feeling and look comes from. It prevents a snatching the club back motion but be careful not to slide. It truly is amazing how much further you can hit the ball with this simple advice because of square contact and maintaining resonance.

Yes, when I focus on width it certainly helps me to obtain a good shoulder turn, a firm left arm, and proper follow through.

Take it from a mental midget high handicapper this video alone has taken 15 strokes off my normal scoring. I do this 3-4 times throughout the round and it brings me back to width focus. Thank you Russell.

Hi Russell, this is probably the best golf tip ever! I’ve tried it and it worked a treat, so simple it’s priceless. Thank you for helping to transform my game. Graham

Have tried many drills with limited success. This drill got me moving over and around the ball like no other. Will keep working with it.

Perfect swing thought RH!!! Width feel helps in extending through the ball AND releasing the club with minimal effort With maximum distance. Somewhere in my treasure trove of swing thoughts, i always knew this but you’ve help validate and prioritize this basic concept. Just what i needed at this point in time. Most of the value of lessons or swing thoughts comes from one’s readiness to absorb, understand and implement them. I’ll always have to work on the “reflection” part, but this hits the spot for me. Thanks RH!

Russell, this is one of the best drills. It helps make the swing so easy and fluid. I was getting stuck at the top of my backswing (feeling all jammed up) and could not hit the ball properly. Using this drill made it so easy to hit the ball consistently straight. Fun to watch my ball fly down the centre of the fairway, while my buddies are going left and right.

My mediocre game has tanked, will try this Friday. Clubs almost went on eBay today. You understand and teach all aspects of the game. This lesson hit home, thanks.

Hey Russell, really feel I'm gaining some great advice from your videos. But I'm a bit confused here, because in this video you're recommending keeping the swing wide, but in another of your videos I just finished watching, called, "HOW TO REALLY WHIP THE CLUB THROUGH THE BALL, at 2:18 you say, "So basically, the more that you direct your hands to the ball, shall we say, or ahead of the ball, the faster that you're going to potentially be. THE WIDER YOU GO WITH YOUR HANDS, THE SLOWER YOU'RE GOING TO BE." What am I missing here? Cheers!

Nothing really the two videos align. The shoulder will move the lead arm which will given the hand path. Let me know if you need anymore help and can create a video on subject

I don't understand why these people who put golf advice on the internet seem to think they should talk on for several minutes without actually saying anything useful until the end.

When I add width to my backswing, I tend to block my shots, especially driver. Because I hook the driver a lot, my thought is a flat wrist on the backswing. This works ok when I swing shorter on backswing, however if I add width, the block comes into play. Should I have more wrist cock with width on backswing. Thanks, you’re videos are very informative. Also I have to agree that with all these you tube golf videos, it is easy to chop and change swing thoughts round to round . What I crave most is confidence as I think this is the key to enjoying golf

At the completion of this swing drill can you attach your right hand anywhere on this club? The left arm/elbow in a "real" swing is at 90 degrees as the right elbow is in the backswing. I think this drill is practicing something which never happens in a proper/normal golf swing. So sorry, Russ, not doing this drill :-(

I love overarching concepts like this that everything else stems from. I have a question Russell. At my level of skill I can only make a good score in single figures when I can play one shot, draw or fade. I notice that over time whatever shot I’m playing gets straighter and straighter until my start line becomes straight but the ball can now fall/ miss both ways and it becomes impossible to plan for my miss. Any drills/ways to ensure you miss one way? Or way of feeling face to path?
