    The last fight of Act 1 in Tyranny, even with all my meta knowledge, is STILL one I have to do multiple tries on the POTD difficulty. I dont think they tested it on that difficulty, you have to cheese it, or luck out. They nerfed all the defensive abilities to the point they require massive amounts of lore and accents that are not available until AFTER the fight, just to be at the point it was appropriate for that fight.

    I almost completed underrail with a spear wielding tanky build, except the last boss killed me so many times that I gave up. I started playing lies of p after hearing all about it by UA-camrs and other people, and before getting into it I had a lot of trouble with parrying as well. Somehow I was able to scrape through sekiro years ago, but none of that experience really helped me with this game. How I ended up beating it is somewhat intriguing, I basically turned the game into a rhythm game. I would walk into a boss arena, basically take all of their attacks to get a feel for the timings and then I would try to match them up with beats. Somehow this actually worked, it trivialized some of the boss encounters which was interesting to me.
    The Witcher 2 Iron Man was also really difficult for me when I did it years ago. I love that game by the way, but what made it more difficult was when I applied the mod which fixed combat and rebalanced everything. What I didn't know at the time, was while it removed a lot of the jank from the game, it made it significantly harder on Ironman.
    Probably the hardest game I ever played was a game on the Vita called natural doctrine, it was this turn-based strategy game and it was full of jank. Some of the enemies were essentially one hit kills, and the way the strategy components were conveyed, made the game extremely difficult. A lot of it had to do with positioning and pairing up characters in a very specific way, it was convoluted as hell. I remember struggling with that game for almost a year. It actually was somewhat satisfying to eventually beat it but the struggle was real.

    A lot of people say some sentiment of "the hardest Dark Souls game is the first one you play", so I recall playing Dark Souls for the first time, and I think it was the hardest game I have played - at the time. Entirety of Starcraft 2 on Brutal was also pretty, well, Brutal. And currently, Unfair for WOTR, but its not so much hard as it is (or was, before Act 3), time consuming.
    How did you feel about the difficulty on an Unfair run in WOTR? I think the idea of "not if I can do, but how long will it take me to" applies very nicely to it.

      @thepancakemann 8 місяців тому

      Agreeing with the sentiment entirely that the hardest DS is the first one you play and I also found DS1 to be the hardest of the bunch at release.
      God looking back I've played some hard games though. Generally the hardest were always the ones with selectable difficulty that intentionally made things unfair when you selected them. Of course, something in my brain does not allow me from choosing easier difficulties, try though I might. It has actually made me appreciate games all the more with a singular vision of difficulty because I don't feel any amount of playtesting will be enough to satisfy everyone, but satisfying your own vision? That you can do as a game developer. I actually think it's a huge reason why the Souls titles are as successful as they are. I recently beat DOS2's honour mode and stomped the game so hard I questioned how anyone thinks it's difficult, but what it really made me wonder is if the game might have had more focus if they just cut the idea completely of having 5 levels of difficulty. The debate continues - I'm all for accessibility in games, but I think it comes at a massive cost to quality.

      @@thepancakemann Havent played D:OS2 yet, so take my comments with a grain of salt. I did play D:OS though. I can tell you that while i enjoyed the game, i didnt enjoyed it as much as other RPGs or JRPGs. I understand that the game values experimentation tremendously and thus balance does tend towaver. However, i felt that the game tried unfair rules (physical immunity, magical immunity, 1 hit kills etc) so i also had to use unfair rules (summoning=better action economy) & that is always a problematic approach. Do note that i only mentioned simple concepts (physical immunity), because D:OS has even more outlandish tools to break the internal rules (and i am sure D;OS2 does that to an even greater extent.)

I probably died to him like 30 times, but literally each time I retried I got just ever so slightly better and could see why I had failed each time before. Despite being absurdly tough, he’s definitely a completely fair boss that doesn’t pull BS tactics or have some glitchy weirdness that gets unearned kills on you. Of the games I have 100%'d I'd probably go with Dark Souls 1, mostly because getting into Dark Souls at release without playing Demons Souls beforehand felt like a real paradigm shift in gaming - one that caught me off guard by how it felt like a return to form to the difficulty you would expect of games in the 80's/90's. I have played Witcher 2 on the hardest difficulty. I also battled with horrible FPS frames, the worst was 10-15 frames whenever i loaded on the Undead field (when collecting the ingredients for the ritual, the Dun Banner etc). I remember i did a lot of rolling and that i was lucky on Witcher 2's superboss, the Imperator (superboss mage with 2 gargoyles underneath Loc Muinne). Somehow i could momentarily heal after i killed a Gargoyle. I remember i was feeling inspired from the training arena & Witcher's intro mission, so i decided i would play hard difficulty, preparing with potions for the encounter. I wouldnt do it in Witcher 3, because its a much bigger game. IMO hard W3 would be easier to beat than hard W2, because the open world can make you tackle the problems at your pace. In a sense, that also is true with W2 but there are just not that many leveling options or options for armor as opposed to W3.

Not sure if anyone else had this experience?

      I really like the game overall, but I bailed on the second black rabbit brotherhood fight. Why they thought it was a good idea to not only put that fight in the game in the first place, but make you slog through it TWICE is easily the worst design choice that otherwise very well made game has.

    Hi Mortim, I'm a recent sub of yours (started watching when Baldur's Gate came out), and I like that you 100% your games before reviewing them. It has somewhat inspired me to start 100 percenting them myself, but I was wondering if you had any advice for when you're grinding through tedium and want to move on? For instance, I beat every boss in Dark Souls 3 recently which I'm proud of myself for, but I'm somewhat dreading have to go back through the game and pick up items that I might have missed or grinding for the covenant rewards.
    I want to 100% it like I did for Lies of P and Lords of the Fallen, but there are also so many other games that I want to play (Diablo 4, Lunacid, Last Faith, etc.) I'm afraid that if I move-on, I won't have the motivation to come back.

      Thanks for the response! Yeah, that makes LOL. It does feel somewhat like a job for me to 100% - perhaps I should treat it like that too, so if I'm feeling burned out, I shouldn't pressure myself too much and come back to it when I have the gumption. I have the luxury of games being just my hobby after all :)@@MortismalGaming

    If your having a hard time getting the perfect parry timing down in LoP... play Lords of the Fallen... The pasty windows are very generous and also when you do a quick step dodge and you're rolling ever has a generous amount of I-Frames for youth room abuse.
    I put 2,800hrs in Bloodborne on the PS4 back in 2018-2019...I was a regular in the robust PvP fight club scene... Bloodborne for me is the greatest game ever made for me.... Lies of P launched a masterpiece imo, played like a spiritual successor three quarter parts Bloodborne (with the game mechanics that influenced Lies of P from both Bloodborne health regen promotes aggressive play, combat mechanics, level design, etc...and one quarter part Sekiro, with the mechanical arm attachments )

    Deflecting in Lies of P is very satisfying, but the window is very unforgiving. I genuinely find Sekiro much easier simply to the fact that the deflecting window is much larger. For Lies of P, I don't find it to be necessarily a huge problem against bosses since you can just retry them over and over until you get the timings down, but it's pretty lame against strong mobs, who are so annoying to fight sometimes that it's often just better to ignore them. This with the fact that you take a ton of damage through regular blocks...

    I didnt think Witcher 2 was all that bad, it had a few frustrating parts. Miasma Chronicles though, I loved that game until coming across my first BIG fight, something like 10 against 3, they could all one-shot any member of my team, meanwhile, IF I hit them, it still took 3-4 turns to take out a single guy. This wasn't even the hardest difficulty. Fights up until that point were a nice challenge. Haven't played it since.

    Yeah UnderRail can be really brutal unless your build (gear and perks) is almost perfect and you know how to deal with the situations - I still don't know how to deal properly with crawlers even after beating the game twice and with expansion. It also helps that Styg (dev) gave up and put the automap in the game. Imagine playing old version and getting lost in the dark tunnels with no map...
    Apparently Age of Decadence is not that difficulty? Succesful speech checks ain't win buttons there...
    Wonder how you can handle older Wizardry games - not just those on sales (Steam/GOG) but also Wizardry 4 , which is one of the hardest RPGs in the history.

    • @pengindoramu
      @pengindoramu 8 місяців тому

      I was one of those degens that styg made fun of with al-fabet where I spent HOURS hauling stuff to sell. I learned the pre-map map and now I get lost in the tunnels after the map changes LOL (the old map made no sense geometrically apparently and had to be changed).
      Re crawlers: spam molotov (fire breaks stealth), u can even back up to a wall/corner and molotov in front of u. Also spam flares.

      So i'm guessing for Wizardry games, Mortym would use the knowledge of those others before him, the ones that found what is the optimal party composition.
      Other than that, if Wizardry 4 would be released today, it would be down to the achievements available. Probably Wizardry wouldnt have many hard achievements, due to the nature of the game (its already hard or rather your party can get wiped, thus the possibility of failure). So not many hard achievemenets, unless they wanted a timesink, like many roguelikes do.

    Assassin's Creed games (Brotherhood through Syndicate with the exception of Unity). Those were the most difficult games for me to at least attempt 100% (for me, 100% is collectibles, side quests, things like that). Now, I have 90-100% completion on most of them. The only ones I don't I either couldn't get into (Unity), could get into but didn't like (Rogue) or recognized I probably wasn't good enough to get everything (Black Flag). I don't attempt 100% with every game I play. I'm not the type of gamer who likes playing games on hard.

    Also cheaty, are challenge runs. But I want to shout out Dark Souls 2, for rewarding players with unique rings after completing the game under certain conditions. It’s just nice to know that a permadeath run has a tangible reward, and you can even show it off to your friends as proof.

    Yeah, about Lies of P, it's a rough one for me. It's a game I absolutely LOVE with all my heart for its setting, and visuals, and unique weapons and combat mechanics... yet I am so bad at parrying it's heartbraking. The very same issue blocked me completely in Sekiro (and it was such a hard time to let go that game as well... similar to Lies of P, I adore the world, the combat, the very soul of the game's brilliant art style, the story & narrative... but I can't get into the combat, even with cheats enabled. It's just not my thing), and when I played the demo a few months ago I was torn apart.
    The game that I was so excited about turned out to be yet another Sekiro in disguise... that over-reliance and focus on parrying is most certainly not for me since I could never improve my reaction time neither in Sekiro nor in Lies of P demo, and I think it's just not possible to improve at (I do believe this isn't something as easily trained as, say, dodging - so 'gitting gud' is not an option really).
    (And after that I started to wait for LOTF (2023) even more... just to be disappointed once again with its floaty weightless combat/character movement which I find so lacking in weight and impact, that LOTF (2023) feels (and plays) worse than LOTF (2014) where (despite all the flaws of the original) I really enjoyed the slow bulky feel of Harkin's impactful blows, and clunky rolls really helped to make the game feel extremely satisfying when I finally learned how to play it properly using the STR build)

    I've given this video another watch and that bit about Lies of P and enemies/bosses with staggered attack animations or weird delays meant to bait parries or dodges is way too true. It's one of the cheaper forms of difficulty to exist in that genre of games. I know FromSoft has been doing it in their games lately, but I really wish other game companies who decide to take notes from them wouldn't copy the delayed/staggered attack animations.

Also because of how underexplained some quests are and how there are multiple times you can miss many of them, I had to do many playthroughs.
