One of the two "outside the box" ways Thrawn used cloaking devices. The other way was in the infiltration of the Sluis Van shipyards. The Ukio attack was also innovative but closer to classic use of a cloaking device. Thrawn used cloaking devices more for deception than stealth.
The interdictors were already deployed by then. Thrawn has always removed the one thing the New Republic relied on far too much that it should be a meme.

Sci Fience I would honestly go 40/60 on that one. The Viper MK II has maneuvering thrusters, which make some crazy turns and evasions possible. That said, the A-Wing has probably a good bit more speed than even a Viper MK VII and light shields which could take a few hits. Equal piloting skill, the Viper MK II probably pulls it out of the fire and wins 3/5 times.

I would send an unmanned space vehicles, so they would be destroyed by "an invisible asteroid", and either make it visible, or at least give me a targeting solution. There were only 22 cloaked Asteroids on Orbit. It's almost impossible to hit them! Especially if You try to cover orbits of different azimuth. You'd run a cargo convoy with 500 ships, and oops 1 destroyed. Mechanical failure is more probable than hitting those asteroids.
Basically ANY ship large enough with a tractor beam strong enough would have been able to pull the asteroids away, the problem was LOCATING those damn things. Hence the battle for the crystal grav-field trap, it´s a device to LOCATE the asteroids via their gravitational field.
That actually WAS exactly what they did. After spreading aluminum foil pieces on which they could see the path of an asteroid when it plows through the foil cloud.
The asteroids were big, larger than an AT-AT or the Millenium Falcon and solid rock, an ImpStar could only carry 6 of them in it´s hangar. But the New Republic didn´t know how many were actually launched in the orbit, Thrawn used a feedback loop to fake tractor beam launches, they assumed over a hundred to be there instead of the real, lower number (not spoiling in case you want to read the novels for yourself). One of the remote controlled freighters releasing the foil clouds got struck by one and was instantly taken out, tumbling down at the planetary shields were it was desintegrated. Any ship below cruiser class (like an ImpStar) would have suffered potentially crippling damage, depending on how and where it got hit.
A good question to ask is; would Thrawn have been such a bad leader if the New Republic fell? He was fair to his men by and large, didn't display the racism inherent to the Empire, and could well have turned back the Vong and other threats with considerably less loss of life
Hey, how about a comparison video? Over all who's the better solider a 'Spartan II with an Smart AI' from Halo or a 'pilot and their TITAN' from TITANFALL. Not who would win in a fight, but was just better.
Masso 2010 I'd argue the Pilot and Titan because they can deal with armour much more effectively. Chief needs a tank, Warthog or specialised weaponry to defeat even a few tanks. A Vanguard Titan can deal with pretty much anything the Titanfall universe can throw at it.
Assuming an interdictor cruiser could be used it would be impractical due to the size of the space around Coruscant (absolutely huge). Of course I’m suggesting that the crystal gravfield trap was capable of far more efficient and widespread scanning, but it’s conjecture without more details on both it and an interdictor’s gravity well.
The New Republic countered the asteroids pretty well, they dropped sensor dust into the solar wind paths and waited for an asteroid to dispel the dust, then fired along the vector of the dust. They destroyed all the asteroids, but didn't realize until the smuggler Talon Kardde told them there were only 22.
Best bet for countering the cloaked asteroids cheaply would be to use relatively expendable spacecraft carrying payloads of some kind of marker material (preferably one that can be spread out over a massive area like a gas) that you vent into the path you want your larger, more important ships to pass through. If your sensors find a hole in the gas, chances are it's a cloaked asteroid.
Remote explosives spread out in a grid, they might not to take out the asteroids down but at the very least you can establish a supply point you could protect
How to counter, well assuming I didn't miss anything it's pretty simple. After the initial thrawn pincer they should know to keep an eye on those interdicers. More importantly that it's a double edged sword as the new republic can use thrawns own interdicers to pull off the same maneuver. So I would find a way to send a message to the fleets and counter pincer with the recall before they move in to siege positions.

One way to clear Coruscant's orbit of asteroids would be to deliberately induce what is known as Kessler Syndrome which actually something that's a very real possibility in Earth orbit just because of all the junk in orbit we have (and I mean literal junk). Kessler Syndrome is when orbital objects (one could be a space station the other could be a lost screwdriver) on different orbital paths start smashing into each other (and even though something small like a screwdriver might not seem dangerous it's speed relative to something on a different orbital path might be similar to what you'd see from a rail gun projectile so there's a lot of kinetic energy in the collision) creating a great deal of debris that goes off in all directions at great speed likely crashing into something else repeating the process again and again filling orbit with tens of million (or more) of small high velocity object that'll smash into anything in orbit altitudes from the planet. Now you might be thinking how does that solve the problem for getting rid of the asteroids in orbit of Coruscant, that just seems like it will make the problem so much worse (as I said it's a real danger for Earth). Well the debris will smash into the orbiting asteroids jut as much as they'll smash into any other satellites so just by observing where those collisions happen it's possible to determine the location of an asteroid at the point of collision and by analysing the data from multiple collisions it should be possible to determine the approximate size and mass of the asteroid as well (by seeing it's change in velocity and direction after any given impact). This way the Golan Defence Platforms or warships can target the asteroids with their weapons and blow them apart with no need for the special sensors. But that leaves the problem of all the debris in orbit, so far all this has done is replace all the big asteroids with millions of small objects crashing into ships going to and from Coruscant and yes that's a problem, but it's a lot smaller one for them than cloaked asteroids because 1) even we in the real world can build lasers suitable to cleaning up orbit so there's no doubt they can do it even better than we can, 2) they've got shield technology in star wars, any ships going through the Kessler Syndrome debris with shields should be fine and should have some sort of laser aboard for any larger chunks they don't want to take on the shields and the New Republic government can organise a series coordinated sweeps of Coruscant's orbital volume with armed and shielded ships to clear it of debris using both shields and laser cannons to do the cleaning (actually it would be a great test of point defence weapons capabilities). The real downside to this method would be that it would entirely destroy any unshielded satellites in orbit that the New Republic would want to keep but that's a relatively easy thing to fix given their capabilities.
It's a pity we don't see any of Thrawn's true strategic potential and genius from the EU in Rebels. What a waste! That show did him no justice at all, because as we can see in Legends he is twice as savage and downright absolute badass!
Honestly, if I was in charge of the New Republic forces, I would have ordered an attack towards the interdictor cruisers at the beginning of the battle. Those cruisers are vulnerable and were pretty much esential to Thrawn's strategy here, so attacking them from their flank would either destroy them or force Thrawn to change his overall display and strategy. It would be risky, but worthy: a few Y-wings would take down one or more of those cruisers, preventing the pincer on that flank.
I would find some way to use Thrawn's Interdictor cruisers against him. I'm sure the New Republic was well aware of these ships and their capabilities, as well as the characteristics of the gravity wells they produce. I would imagine those wells are impartial, and affect anything in hyperspace, regardless if they're Imperial or NR. I would launch a small fleet of ships out of system in an angle that, once they jump back, would come out of hyperspace behind his fleet, in a direct line to the interdictor cruisers. The ICs would either have to leave system or move forward and mix in with the main fleet. In any sense, the frontline assault would have to divert resources and assets from the initial direction of assault to counter the flank. It would take some time, but the shield on Coruscant would no doubt last a very long time under any type of bombardment. It would also lead the commanders of the Imperial side thinking that the NR is trying to flee, and would bolster a heightened sense of confidence, in turn emboldening their efforts and increasing the ensuing chaos upon the activation of the flanking maneuver. However, that's just my opinion. Tell me what you think down in the comments!
distelmarc that’s actually a very good idea the thing is in this scenario the communications relay was the first thing destroyed so theirs no way to contact any other fleet. But thrawn never uses his ships carelessly so he probably has ships one system away most likely.
The other issue you don't really adress is the fact that Thrawn knows where he will put his interdictor cruisers and knows the angles that his other fleets need to come from to appear just where he wants it. But for the republic, seeing as space battle is 3 dimensional, The empire fleet can come from any direction, which means you cen't prepare your fleets before the fight begins. Also, as soon as the interdictor cruisers are out of hyperspace, you can't launch a small fleet out of the system because your fleets are interdicted.
To counter the asteroids, use a helluvalotof seismic charges in orbit. Those have a large enough blast radius to cover the portion of orbit. Also, they could have placed a mine field around the planet...
I've been trying for a while to figure out how the asteroids besieged the planet and I think I understand now, but I might be wrong so help me out if I am. The point isn't that Thrawn released enough asteroids to form a minefield around the planet, it's that he threatened that. The Republic couldn't know how many asteroids there are, and couldn't see them. They got lucky by shooting blindly and getting all of them, but the Republic had to check if the threat was clear before the shield could be lowered. And the only way to be certain if you got them all was that crystal thing.
That's pretty much it. The Republic was afraid they'd miss an Asteroid and de-activating the shield might cause great catasthrope even if one Asteroid was still left there. Talon Karrde however was in the system Thrawn got the asteroids and managed to tell the Republic about the real number of asteroids. By then, if I recall, the asteroids had been destroyed but the Republic was worried there might be more.
The better strategy would have been to keep the defense Fleet around Coruscant. Considering there extensive experience with hit-and-run tactics, there would be more New Republic commanders who could recognize a feigned retreat when they saw one. The New Republic frequently allowed the enemy to control the terms of the engagement.
They should have been able to recognize the pincer after its many uses there for they could have come with a counter by then also was there a reason for the lack of engagement of the original engagement with the interdiers
The actual brilliance in Thrawn's "siege" is that it was never designed or intended to be permanent… at least not in the conventional sense. That's why there was all the deception tactics and the use of the cloaked asteroids. In fact the New Republic would actually discover some means of detecting the cloaked asteroids and destroying them well before the Battle of Bilbringi. However, the process was slow and at the same time, the deception tactics employed made it difficult for the New Republic to accurately tell how many cloaked asteroids had actually been dropped into orbit, which forced the New Republic to keep the Coruscant shields up and go about the process of finding and destroying the asteroids that were dropped into orbit... And with no knowledge of how many asteroids were dropped, the shields had to be kept up simply out of fear that there was one that was missed. In this, while the New Republic might destroy all the asteroids, but they will still keep the shields up and won't allow anyone to come in or go out in order to prevent one that "hadn't" been found to be deployed. As such, much of the "siege" of Coruscant would be carried out by the New Republic in fear of something that Thrawn had done, as they'd keep their shields up and their commerce and contacts closed... And in actuality that is precisely what happened. It's something that I think either Garm or one of Karrde's tech guys figured out shortly before the departure for Bilbringi in that all of the cloaked asteroids had been destroyed. The reasoning was ultimately in relation to the cargo capacity of the ships Thrawn had used and how many asteroids that they could carry and deploy... which given their size amounted to between 20 and 30, which the New Republic had managed to find and destroy. Yet, the New Republic had still kept the shields up.
I love your videos watched everyone of them. But one point I find incorrect about your vids are the Interdictor cruisers, they project cone shapes, not spheres. Hence the sharp lines to bring the ships out of hyperspace in the right place. This is true in Legends anyways, but they may have changed it for the re-booted stuff. Either way, great vids, great detailed breakdowns and tactics, cant wait for more.
(36th request) 1 CAS Class Assault Carrier with 4 CSS Class Battlecruisers and 4 SDV-class heavy corvettes VS 1 Bellator Class Super Star Destroyer (yes i look it up and the Bellator Class has Fighters about 100 of them) 4 Imperial 2 class Star Destroyers and 4 Dreadnought Class Heavy cruisers (theses ships use to be Victory 2 class Star Destroyers but that would give the Empire too much an edge in the battle so i made them Dreadnought class Heavy cruisers instated too make it equal in a way)
I feel like the asteroids could have been dispatched through the useof interdictors in some way instead of this massive attack on bilbringi. Use the gravity wells of a couple interdictors to draw the asteroids out of orbit around coruscant. I mean, that would still mean that thrawn would win eventually, but it could have averted the near disaster that was bilbringi

But the New Republic didn´t know how many were actually launched in the orbit, Thrawn used a feedback loop to fake tractor beam launches, they assumed over a hundred to be there instead of the real, lower number (not spoiling in case you want to read the novels for yourself).
One of the remote controlled freighters releasing the foil clouds got struck by one and was instantly taken out, tumbling down at the planetary shields were it was desintegrated. Any ship below cruiser class (like an ImpStar) would have suffered potentially crippling damage, depending on how and where it got hit.

A good question to ask is; would Thrawn have been such a bad leader if the New Republic fell? He was fair to his men by and large, didn't display the racism inherent to the Empire, and could well have turned back the Vong and other threats with considerably less loss of life

Masso 2010 I'd argue the Pilot and Titan because they can deal with armour much more effectively. Chief needs a tank, Warthog or specialised weaponry to defeat even a few tanks. A Vanguard Titan can deal with pretty much anything the Titanfall universe can throw at it.

Assuming an interdictor cruiser could be used it would be impractical due to the size of the space around Coruscant (absolutely huge). Of course I’m suggesting that the crystal gravfield trap was capable of far more efficient and widespread scanning, but it’s conjecture without more details on both it and an interdictor’s gravity well.
The New Republic countered the asteroids pretty well, they dropped sensor dust into the solar wind paths and waited for an asteroid to dispel the dust, then fired along the vector of the dust. They destroyed all the asteroids, but didn't realize until the smuggler Talon Kardde told them there were only 22.
Best bet for countering the cloaked asteroids cheaply would be to use relatively expendable spacecraft carrying payloads of some kind of marker material (preferably one that can be spread out over a massive area like a gas) that you vent into the path you want your larger, more important ships to pass through. If your sensors find a hole in the gas, chances are it's a cloaked asteroid.
Remote explosives spread out in a grid, they might not to take out the asteroids down but at the very least you can establish a supply point you could protect

How to counter, well assuming I didn't miss anything it's pretty simple. After the initial thrawn pincer they should know to keep an eye on those interdicers. More importantly that it's a double edged sword as the new republic can use thrawns own interdicers to pull off the same maneuver. So I would find a way to send a message to the fleets and counter pincer with the recall before they move in to siege positions.

One way to clear Coruscant's orbit of asteroids would be to deliberately induce what is known as Kessler Syndrome which actually something that's a very real possibility in Earth orbit just because of all the junk in orbit we have (and I mean literal junk). Kessler Syndrome is when orbital objects (one could be a space station the other could be a lost screwdriver) on different orbital paths start smashing into each other (and even though something small like a screwdriver might not seem dangerous it's speed relative to something on a different orbital path might be similar to what you'd see from a rail gun projectile so there's a lot of kinetic energy in the collision) creating a great deal of debris that goes off in all directions at great speed likely crashing into something else repeating the process again and again filling orbit with tens of million (or more) of small high velocity object that'll smash into anything in orbit altitudes from the planet.
Now you might be thinking how does that solve the problem for getting rid of the asteroids in orbit of Coruscant, that just seems like it will make the problem so much worse (as I said it's a real danger for Earth). Well the debris will smash into the orbiting asteroids jut as much as they'll smash into any other satellites so just by observing where those collisions happen it's possible to determine the location of an asteroid at the point of collision and by analysing the data from multiple collisions it should be possible to determine the approximate size and mass of the asteroid as well (by seeing it's change in velocity and direction after any given impact). This way the Golan Defence Platforms or warships can target the asteroids with their weapons and blow them apart with no need for the special sensors.
But that leaves the problem of all the debris in orbit, so far all this has done is replace all the big asteroids with millions of small objects crashing into ships going to and from Coruscant and yes that's a problem, but it's a lot smaller one for them than cloaked asteroids because 1) even we in the real world can build lasers suitable to cleaning up orbit so there's no doubt they can do it even better than we can, 2) they've got shield technology in star wars, any ships going through the Kessler Syndrome debris with shields should be fine and should have some sort of laser aboard for any larger chunks they don't want to take on the shields and the New Republic government can organise a series coordinated sweeps of Coruscant's orbital volume with armed and shielded ships to clear it of debris using both shields and laser cannons to do the cleaning (actually it would be a great test of point defence weapons capabilities). The real downside to this method would be that it would entirely destroy any unshielded satellites in orbit that the New Republic would want to keep but that's a relatively easy thing to fix given their capabilities.
It's a pity we don't see any of Thrawn's true strategic potential and genius from the EU in Rebels. What a waste! That show did him no justice at all, because as we can see in Legends he is twice as savage and downright absolute badass!
Honestly, if I was in charge of the New Republic forces, I would have ordered an attack towards the interdictor cruisers at the beginning of the battle. Those cruisers are vulnerable and were pretty much esential to Thrawn's strategy here, so attacking them from their flank would either destroy them or force Thrawn to change his overall display and strategy. It would be risky, but worthy: a few Y-wings would take down one or more of those cruisers, preventing the pincer on that flank.

I would find some way to use Thrawn's Interdictor cruisers against him. I'm sure the New Republic was well aware of these ships and their capabilities, as well as the characteristics of the gravity wells they produce. I would imagine those wells are impartial, and affect anything in hyperspace, regardless if they're Imperial or NR. I would launch a small fleet of ships out of system in an angle that, once they jump back, would come out of hyperspace behind his fleet, in a direct line to the interdictor cruisers. The ICs would either have to leave system or move forward and mix in with the main fleet. In any sense, the frontline assault would have to divert resources and assets from the initial direction of assault to counter the flank. It would take some time, but the shield on Coruscant would no doubt last a very long time under any type of bombardment. It would also lead the commanders of the Imperial side thinking that the NR is trying to flee, and would bolster a heightened sense of confidence, in turn emboldening their efforts and increasing the ensuing chaos upon the activation of the flanking maneuver. However, that's just my opinion. Tell me what you think down in the comments!
distelmarc that’s actually a very good idea the thing is in this scenario the communications relay was the first thing destroyed so theirs no way to contact any other fleet. But thrawn never uses his ships carelessly so he probably has ships one system away most likely.
The other issue you don't really adress is the fact that Thrawn knows where he will put his interdictor cruisers and knows the angles that his other fleets need to come from to appear just where he wants it. But for the republic, seeing as space battle is 3 dimensional, The empire fleet can come from any direction, which means you cen't prepare your fleets before the fight begins. Also, as soon as the interdictor cruisers are out of hyperspace, you can't launch a small fleet out of the system because your fleets are interdicted.

To counter the asteroids, use a helluvalotof seismic charges in orbit. Those have a large enough blast radius to cover the portion of orbit. Also, they could have placed a mine field around the planet...

I've been trying for a while to figure out how the asteroids besieged the planet and I think I understand now, but I might be wrong so help me out if I am.
The point isn't that Thrawn released enough asteroids to form a minefield around the planet, it's that he threatened that. The Republic couldn't know how many asteroids there are, and couldn't see them. They got lucky by shooting blindly and getting all of them, but the Republic had to check if the threat was clear before the shield could be lowered. And the only way to be certain if you got them all was that crystal thing.
That's pretty much it. The Republic was afraid they'd miss an Asteroid and de-activating the shield might cause great catasthrope even if one Asteroid was still left there. Talon Karrde however was in the system Thrawn got the asteroids and managed to tell the Republic about the real number of asteroids. By then, if I recall, the asteroids had been destroyed but the Republic was worried there might be more.
Thrawn is an absolute genius and I’m hoping they show this in Ahsoka. I want to see Thrawn bring the new republic to its knees.

The better strategy would have been to keep the defense Fleet around Coruscant. Considering there extensive experience with hit-and-run tactics, there would be more New Republic commanders who could recognize a feigned retreat when they saw one. The New Republic frequently allowed the enemy to control the terms of the engagement.

They should have been able to recognize the pincer after its many uses there for they could have come with a counter by then also was there a reason for the lack of engagement of the original engagement with the interdiers

The actual brilliance in Thrawn's "siege" is that it was never designed or intended to be permanent… at least not in the conventional sense. That's why there was all the deception tactics and the use of the cloaked asteroids. In fact the New Republic would actually discover some means of detecting the cloaked asteroids and destroying them well before the Battle of Bilbringi. However, the process was slow and at the same time, the deception tactics employed made it difficult for the New Republic to accurately tell how many cloaked asteroids had actually been dropped into orbit, which forced the New Republic to keep the Coruscant shields up and go about the process of finding and destroying the asteroids that were dropped into orbit...
And with no knowledge of how many asteroids were dropped, the shields had to be kept up simply out of fear that there was one that was missed. In this, while the New Republic might destroy all the asteroids, but they will still keep the shields up and won't allow anyone to come in or go out in order to prevent one that "hadn't" been found to be deployed. As such, much of the "siege" of Coruscant would be carried out by the New Republic in fear of something that Thrawn had done, as they'd keep their shields up and their commerce and contacts closed...
And in actuality that is precisely what happened. It's something that I think either Garm or one of Karrde's tech guys figured out shortly before the departure for Bilbringi in that all of the cloaked asteroids had been destroyed. The reasoning was ultimately in relation to the cargo capacity of the ships Thrawn had used and how many asteroids that they could carry and deploy... which given their size amounted to between 20 and 30, which the New Republic had managed to find and destroy. Yet, the New Republic had still kept the shields up.
I love your videos watched everyone of them. But one point I find incorrect about your vids are the Interdictor cruisers, they project cone shapes, not spheres. Hence the sharp lines to bring the ships out of hyperspace in the right place. This is true in Legends anyways, but they may have changed it for the re-booted stuff. Either way, great vids, great detailed breakdowns and tactics, cant wait for more.

I feel like the asteroids could have been dispatched through the useof interdictors in some way instead of this massive attack on bilbringi. Use the gravity wells of a couple interdictors to draw the asteroids out of orbit around coruscant. I mean, that would still mean that thrawn would win eventually, but it could have averted the near disaster that was bilbringi
