- First off, BIG NEWS! The Carmudgeon Show is getting its own channel thanks to the Hagerty Podcast Network. Visit / @thecarmudgeonshow to subscribe to the new channel. Now back to the last episode from ISSIMI.
Who are Porsche’s customers? Old white guys who drive 911s? Yes. Soccer moms who drive Macans and Cayennes? Absolutely. Airbus? Also yes. Harley-Davidson? You bet. Volvo? Definitely. Lada? You guessed it. From almost the beginning, Porsche has been a company that does engineering work for hire. It keep excess engineering capacity busy which helps keep the lights on too. It also has made for some interesting collaborations, some of which are well-known, others are thoroughly obscure. In this episode, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott discuss a number of these, ranging from the well-known like the Mercedes-Benz 500E and Audi RS2, to “under what rock did you look to find this?” like Linde forklifts, Airbus airliner cockpits, or the Lada Samara, the replacement of the 1200 which has been immortalized in Russian dashcam videos. So next time you accuse Porsche of selling out, check and make sure that they haven’t already designed a similar apparatus for someone else before, because chances are they probably have.

Huge news! This podcast is one of the few that when they drop I stop everything, going to be quite unproductive if they start dropping weekly 😂
Yes! So happy to see this. Y’all are the best for continuing this series.
I was like "`Why Is UA-cam showing old videos in my subscriptions? "
Always enjoy you two.
I came to type this comment word for word! even the Ya'll but I spell it different.
I can't believe the news! This is amazing but totally expected because the amount Hagerty has been acquiring has been crazy. When I got the internal announcements for the marketplace I wasn't even surprised.
Loving the E30 so thanks for turning me onto them years ago.
Two episodes at the same time. You made a shitty day alot better!
Comment #45. been binging on listening to these revealing conversations, with a spash of frank intimacy and I gotta say i'm hooked. Please keep the content coming, even if they are brash, unapologetic comments on the manufactures, the owners and everything that comes with car ownership. love it.
So happy the show will continue!
Bro, Alllllll the way in India we have Kamiija which is pronounced very close to Camissa and it ALSO means shirt in Punjabi!
So excited to see the series continue! This is my favorite thing to watch on UA-cam, and one of the main shows I point people towards when they ask about the obscure information I know.
"Camisa", means shirt (with buttons all length) in Español, a T-shirt or a wifebeater is caled a "Polera".
Correct, and “Cammisa” (with two Ms) has the same meaning in Sicilian dialect (Camicia in Italian). It’s spelled Cammisa also in some other dialects, though.
It’s Chemise in french so not that far either. Weird to think of him as Mr. Shirt now
Oh my god! I’m so excited that the team is back together!
Rs2 ADU has same internal as the 3B, ABY and AAN engines. The rs2 got a much bigger turbo a set of cams that are similar to NM (2.0 5 cylinder only sold in Italy and Spain), redesigned exhaust manifold, bigger injectors and a 5.7 ohm resistor on the ecu boards that rescaled the boost and fuel maps meaning they wouldn’t run into the max boost limiter which is a common thing for a tuned s2 to do
love to see you guys back together!
So excited these are going to continue! The episodes have so much great info that every time I rewatch an old episode I find myself learning something new. Keep up the great work!
Jason’s face at 52:52 😂
But whilst he’s thinking that he is actually talking to a confused old man, the hyphen backpaddles on his gaslighting attempt, wich would have purely been for his own entertainment, as he realized, someone’s got to watch this back for these inserts, and it’s Damn well not going to be him. Fearing the repercussions of the „wifebeater“, who will surely notice, he hastily drops the lie, shrouding his gaslighting attempt in a cloud of „old man brain fart“.
Ferdinand Porsche, the guy you mentioned that died in the 50's and made the beetle, while he was working for Austro Daimler won a race (being part of a driving team). The Alpenfahrt. (roughly 3000km in 8 days at the beginning of the 20th century) This race is the origin of real factory racing in my opinion. 1912 was the first time someone used a Rolls Royce to compete in it. They couldn't make it up a certain road in austria. (The old Katschberg Bundesstrasse, later a long time testing ground later for Porsche, Audi, Semperit, PEWAG ect.) Rolls Royce was so embaressed, that they built different gearboxes, upped the horsepower and cooling, and sent cars, drivers and mechanics tolocation and did a lot of testing. So in the next itteration of the race, they sent factory teams, and won. For the 100 year anniversary the official Rolls Royce homepage talked about the win in 1913. (But not that they were the only ones to have 4 factory teams with specially develloped cars and had tested on site, or that their cars couldn't make it up the steeper roads in the year previous)
Back to Mr. Porsche, he constructed the undercarriage to a huge siege mortar for teh austro hungarian army. (The thing fired 700kg shells) and it moved electrically (in todays speaking it was a hybrid) The military museum in vienna still has one. The video is in german, but at least it's visible what a huge thing that was: ua-cam.com/video/x0Jjtjwzph4/v-deo.html
Nice one, Hagerty. I have my ‘64 vette and ‘89 5.0 mustang insured through them. Happy to keep them given this!
Love the show. Its great to hear it's getting the recognition it deserves and moving to a more regular thing.
Glad to have y’all back! This is one of my favorite series.
Great to see you both!
Thank you for your passionate, uplifting tone from this convo. Felt a bit down from the cynical convo from savagegeese channel. Both of you guys have great point, now just need more money to buy more cars 🥲
Excited to be seeing more of the amazing show.
Lovely show and episode as always! It’s interesting to see the collabs in terms of consulting the Porsche has done. If memory also served me right, Porsche also helped manufacturer engines for Volvo. That and the Volvo 850 BTCC racer had a collab with Porsche. Very cool stuff! Love the work!
And, for the record, I believe the first Dr. Porsche also designed the ultimate driver-killer Grand Prix car - the Auto Union. Lovely combination of tiny tires, fragile flexing wheels, swing axles, rear mount engine and 620 supercharged HP.
Looking forward to more fequent podcasts with you guys! Btw. thanks Jason for returning back to explaining terms in more detail because not everyone is versed in every part of car history. I knew todays ones 4Ses = Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (I run them on my M3) and Lada = Soviet national car company, that bought license for Fiat and manufactured them for 50 years without any real development (I grew up in Czechslovakia and sometimes travel to Ukraine, where you see bunch of them still running today).
I kept this to be watched later , because I had no hope on Jason bringing another one soon. Gave in and watched it now. Now I'm debating getting enough sleep and watching this plus the one in the new channel.
Awesome!!! Move to Hagerty!!! Hell yeah
Camisa = "Shirt" in Mexican spanish. In other spanish speeking countries it means "tank top"; hence "wife beater". Addituonaly I belive that camiseta = shirt in countries where camisa = wife beater. In Mexico camiseta = t-shirt.
Thank you guys so much for this, I miss them!!!
LET'S GO! I cheered hearing the transition to Hagerty! I love ISSIMI and am not going anywhere, but if it means more content from you two, then I'm stoked!
More Carmudgeon content on Hagerty? Yes, please!
Carmudgeon is wonderful, it deserves its own platform. Was that Demuro’s Audi?
Oh my God!!! You are back!!!!!! Such a relief
Yesssss! Thanks for keeping this going
sweet! LOVE Hagerty and LOVE you guys! Jason, I need more car videos from you! Your too talented not to!
8:48 to skip to the meat
Awesome upgrade can't wait for more
The long overdue Carmudgeon!
Hooray! More Jason and Hyphen!
You could have a Porsche sign on a terrifying Seat Ibiza 1.2 or 1.5 Porsche system! I believe they just worked on the EFI. Quite hilarious was also the “Tiptronic by Porsche” on the Antiquated 4 speed Automatic Peugeot and Citroen had in the early 2000’s
Hyphen and Jason moving to Hagerty.....amazing
YES!YES!YES! my favorite podcast is getting more episodes
congrats guy!
Always great to see Jason and Hyphen.
So glad you're back! Camisa means "shirt with buttons" btw 😂
Ah nice timing, eating dinner while listening to two (!) carmudgeon episodes is 👌
That must have been a LONG dinner!
IT'S BAAAAAACCCCKKKK!!!!
Ermahlerd! More Carmudgeon! Woo!
It’s back!
Regarding alternative engines for the 924/944 there are conversions for the audi 5 cylinder engine. Another popular conversion is the Audi 1.8 TT engine.
Y'all are back!
That's why the company is called Dr of engineering!
'bout bloody time!
240, 740 and 940 are all big cars, as were 140 before it. 805 took them front wheel drive but there was same time still 960 and S90 which was last rwd. From that the full sized have continued in S80 and S70/V70 and again V90/S90 currently. With big I mean their standard sized full price cars. First compact car was DAF bubblegum drive 340, and then S40/V40 and now also C30. S60 was between these two classes.
Very entertaining.
Audi A6 Quattro, 2.7 bi turbo.
Can relate to your descriptions.
Been enjoying my '01 factory sport seat and suspension, six speed, fully loaded A6 2.7T since '01 and don't want to give it up. Will be dropping in a Magnaflow exhaust soon as the stock exhaust has finally reached it's life end. Next are fresh Bilsteins. Can't let it go as it's a perfect winter beater and in excellent shape. How many sedans still available in 6 speed?
It’s more efficient to stay in your car to kill someone.
Btw I really like the setting where you are in a garage and there are random people using the kitchenette and using their phones. I hope your new set preserves some aspects of that set.
yesssssss holyshit i love hagerty I just subscribed
Airplane! Reference. That’s what I subscribed for.
Great show as always. BTW the link in the description doesn't work.
I love this German-Impersonations so much and i love your Show. Funny - iam from germany, around 12miles from „Porsche Stammwerk Zuffenhausen„ away :P
I liked before even watching it
Those old quattros are not fwd based. They are primarily 50:50 that can shift its bias. You will typically slip up both inside wheels, not the front inside. A good rear lsd transforms those cars! Slow in fast out, you drive them different
Ragazzi..... Camicia is a button up shirt. Canottiera is a tank top. Ciao!
it's about time!
nice plants
Just subscribed to your new page gents!
We know you mean Michelin pilot sport 4s when you say 4s. We are all nerds
Also Great show
The Porsche consulting firm story is very similar to Yamaha "jack of all trades" company. I hope you guys look into it...
The alternatives for the Tiguan were appearently: Nanuk, Namib, Rockton, Samun. Lets see which animals you think those are supposed to be
DTS's info about Porsche consulting for outside businesses was covered well by, I think Ludvigson, in an older issue of Excellence. It included the Cessna story.
Porsche also did consulting work for seat before VW bought seat. - there they mentioned it in the show.

Long live the Hagerty!
Aircraft engines spin at low RPM because you can't have the blade tips going supersonic, and a very small diameter propeller is very inefficient. The large displacement is necessary to make decent power at relatively low RPM. Low RPM also contributes to reliability. The weirdest engine I know of was the Continental Tiara, which put the propeller on the camshaft to emulate a 2:1 reduction gearbox. The Porsche aircraft engine was a dismal failure, by the way. I recall many lawyers were involved. The Mooney was ridiculously expensive, as well.
Tiguan, Nanuk, Namib, Rockton, Samun
SEAT made the Fiat 600 under license not the 500. The Ibiza had 'System Porsche' branding on the engine and the early cars had decals on the side too.
Porsche design....Fuji FX4 camera.....hmmm. BTW love the show.
The happiest day of 2022 😁
I remember my grade 4 teacher drove a Lada Niva (probably in the mid 90s) , didn't exactly know what it was back then, but I thought it was the coolest car in the parking lot.
Always a bridesmaid never a bride lol....no more! Good work guys!
Porsche also did design work on the Leopard main battle tank.
And the Ferdinand tank destroyer.
omg they really are on Spotify
What's with the plants in the background? i'm guessing those were recommended by someone else? Keep up the great work!
You're all clear Jason!

I want a VW Liger.
Samun, Namib, Rockton, Tiguan and Nanuk were the options for the auto bild readers to name the then new SUV from Volkswagen
holy moly
Even though it's kind of off topic I really like hyphens aerospace facts.
YESSSS YESSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
I commented before I heard the intros
And then I heard the intro and was like Noooooo
And then announced there’s still gonna be the podcast but just somewhere else
Y’all made me go thru my ups and down in the first 25 seconds
Gotta say, prefer the audio like this than the new ‘radio’ setup. You both just speak more naturally 🤷♂️
Jason .. a 2000 porsche 996 went from 16 k to 36. Thats not just inflation.. 125 percent up in 15 months is insane
Hyphen is right on Airbus. It is in fact, the European aeronautic consortium.
FINALLYYYYYYYY
FUCKIN' FINALLY! A NEW EPISODE! Also I'm very happy for the show continue
fyi, PFM doesn't stand for "porsche for mooney" it stands for "porsche fleigmotoren"
A flat cylinder head and a hemispherical bowl in the piston is common in diesel engines.
The Ford Kent engine had this concept.
Didn't Porsche have involvement in the design of the V6 Duratech engine for Ford?
No new KDF-Wagen. But VW _did_ register the e-Kübel trademark (as in Wehrmacht Kübelwagen, but also what some people called the Thing in Germany - the Bundeswehr version was called Kurierwagen, precisely to NOT be the Kübelwagen again) in 2020.
And apart from the missing swastika wings and "Deutsche Arbeitsfront" cogs their redesigned logo is pretty close to the original again now..
You are totally right I remember going to VW meets and there was a second logo bumper pin that had a golden eagle on it that everyone geeked out over
You should own what you labor 👍
Duh guys, vintage B-chassis Audis are indeed fun! Not the same experience as a sports car, but an engaging experience regardless. I like to think of them as a "reverse-911" engine layout :D.
Y34 Nissan Gloria is supposedly a Porsche design too.
Porsche did the engine for the Harley Davidson v rod
And of course planes come up, hi Jason, glad Sr. didn't decapitate ya bud :)
yeeeee boiiiiii
