About that, a good 1000 Watt online UPS costs about half of my build or 7 times my motherboard. And I don't think I'll lose more than 1 or 2 mobo's to power outages, so I'm good.
You can always buy a used one for a lot cheaper, then buy a replacement battery(s). All UPSs are designed to have easily replaceable batteries and that can cut the overall cost in half.

I was extremely appreciative then, and am extremely appreciative now; I've had power outages and blinks occasionally since moving back home, and it's given me a tremendous amount of peace of mind. A power outage bricked my previous motherboard before I got the UPS, and that's made me really wary of power stuff since then.

I have always had UPS since childhood because of my dad and he needed them so he doesn't lose data if electricity goes out. I have always appreciated them and they have saved my save files 100s of times.
I have 2. One protects my NASes and one protects my desktop, main router and Starlink equipment. These things may not look fancy but are absolutely worth it.

I have a motherboard with this feature, and it gave me peace of mind knowing that my mistakes could be corrected with a button.
Even with a big-assed whole-house standby generator, I have UPSes on my computer, TV, cable box & cable modem to keep everything lit up during the 20 seconds it takes the whole-house generator to come online. They came in handy when Helene's eye came within 50 miles of my house.

Speaking of UPSs, I had an old Dell Inspiron office desktop PC that set up to be a Linux server using Ubuntu. It had both a boot SSD and a separate storage SSD but when my neighborhood's power went out one afternoon, the Ubuntu install got corrupted but luckily the storage drive was perfectly fine so I didn't loose any of my files 😅.
UPS lasts for a few minutes, depending on what you have connected to it of course. I have the PC and a screen connected to an UPS at work, no fancy LEDs or cooling systems in my case, 15 to 20 minutes is the most I can hope for when the power's out. So no updates when the power is unstable, save your work, commit to your version control, close everything, and shut down your machine. That's what a UPS is for, buy yourself time to save everything, and shutdown safely.
My ups is the embodiment of “esté cansado jefe” meme. My aunt used it on her Pentium III pc back in the day, it served my dad for more than 10 years and now it’s serving me, a small beautiful yellowed white plastic box with rich history and just enough juice left to give me 15 or so seconds to turn off my pc in time of need.
My inverter at home runs my PC between 8 and a half hours to as long as a few days straight, it's a hybrid inverter so I can choose to priortize battery or the grid, and if the power does go out, it keeps my home running like if nothing happened. Provided I have enough sun light, I can recharge my batteries faster than what my PC can eat with my solar panels, too. I'm aware most homes don't do this but mine is a DIY config so it's not necessarily grid tied, I just happen to be able to plug it into the grid mains and let it pass through the inverter. I guess you can say it's an overengineered UPS lol
I never update my BIOS unless I have a good reason to. I hate automatic bios updates like some laptops have. It’s so stupid. Also, i’m not sure about the newest motherboards but I know a lot of them have some way to flash the bios even if it’s gotten corrupt somehow. So even if an update fails you can (maybe) still recover it.
Make sure you get Pure sine wave UPS, as some higher end PSU's can see the non-Pure sine wave power as dirty power and shut themselves off to protect it's self.
I got a used one with a dead battery on marketplace. Paired with a fresh battery from eBay, I got a like new UPS for $30. Worked like a champ when my power went out the other week.
I hooked my pc up to a surge protector right before Helene (which hit my location pretty hard we didn’t have power for 1.5 weeks) and im so glad I did.
2 things made me the most popular PC tech in my (rural) area. 1. the fact I knew if your equipment was damaged due to a power failure, the power company reimburses you and 2. selling customers a UPS to protect the computer when I had to come and fix issues caused by power surges and brown outs to prevent future damage. Fun fact: the batteries inside are end-user serviceable.

What you wrote sounds like the button (each only on some motherboards) that cuts power to all of the board's volatile memory, resetting its stored values. Also, depending on how that works, it may still fail as incomplete flashes are much worse than older versions simply incompatible with newer CPUs.
CyberPower UT series is great. Goes from 425W to 1.3kW and can be hooked up to a generator. I'm from Germany and run a UT2200EG (140 EUR). Difference to UT1500 (900W) less than 9 bucks.
Make sure you also have a Flashback button! That could potentially save your bricked bios by re-flashing it with the button directly through a USB stick.
Aren’t UPS’s for brief power outages, like if the power shuts off for a couple seconds or minutes. In a hurricane a power outage could be hours and hours of power outage, i don’t think a UPS will help much with that
Just as a heads up: temper your expectations. Unless you want to spend a small fortune (like legit more than the PC itself) you’re looking at a few seconds/minutes at most of runtime. They are intended to let you shut down, NOT to let you keep playing. Also the batteries need to be replaced every few years even if you don’t “use” them, and are generally expensive and model-specific. Another thing to keep in mind is the type of UPS - namely pure or modified/stepped/simulated sine wave. Tldr is think of the electricity like audio, pure is an analog match and modified is digital. For your average computer modified is probably fine but for servers I’d recommend pure, but also check your regular PSU’s documentation and if you’re using an automated (power) transfer switch you 100% need pure sine (example would be if you have a UPS and then a backup UPS, so likely for miners but still)
Having been in IT for five years, don't put all your trust in a UPS. I've seen plenty of surges kill them, and they might go 4 years before they're used, and by then, the battery is degraded to the point where it lasts 6 minutes on your 1200 watt power supply. It's just a failsafe
I know nobody that actually has a UPS, it's just not as common here in Germany. Our power grid is quite robust so far. The last power outage I had was about 8 years ago.
I live in Europe too, but if a natural disaster is bad enough, you'll have an issue. Last year, there was a power outage in the early morning, that I didn't notice until I realized wifi wasn't working. It was a normal day, too, without any storms or natural disasters.

Most brands only give you enough time to shut off your computer, including cyberpower, with APC you have time to use your computer for about an hour at low loads, the battery holds 220wh
It's incredibly hard to brick a motherboard like this. When you update, it flashes the software to flash the motherboard first. So you can only break it within those 10 seconds or so. If you lose power during any other part of the BIOS update, the motherboard will just be put into a recovery state where you can reflash it and it should not break.
A ups has saved me so many times from going insane because i did not save or because i was in the middle of a boss fight that i was winning etc. Get ur self a ups and a inverter and it will save you from multiple situations.
Dad had UPS for a gateway (and only) router and a camera system. One day mom managed to get some water into power outlet and entire house shut down. I only had a gaming laptop at the time and a monitor. I was quite confused when the monitor turned off when playing CS:GO with friends, but I could still talk to the friends despite not seeing anything (the laptop had working battery at the time and internet was on UPS). Unfortunately laptop didn't manage to switch to it's own monitor mid game for some reason.

I lived with a guy who had a few of these and they would beep so often it was annoying as heck. It also feels risky updating a BIOS on a pc that randomly shuts down any day of the week.
Quick tip about the UPS... CHANGE THE BATTERY AT LEAST EVERY 5 YEARS OR BUY A NEW ONE!!! Those batteries will eventually go out and turn into a glorified power strip.
This brick is easly reperable. 1. If you have button to flash Bios. 2. If you have dual-bios with switch. 3. If you chose a cheep motherboard without both you are gonna need another PC with Programator that cost ~5$ wirh clips. Most motherboards are gonna be fine without desoldering bios chip and you can find several good tutorials on UA-cam.

A lower capacity APC UPS is the best bang for your buck. Gives you plenty of time to finish your match or update and then safely power your PC off.

One of the biggest killers of electronic devices isn't over voltage, it's under voltage (AKA brown outs). A UPS virtually eliminates this issue.

A ups has saved me so many times from going insane because i did not save or because i was in the middle of a boss fight that i was winning etc.
Get ur self a ups and a inverter and it will save you from multiple situations.
Some boards, like those from Gigabyte do have a backup bios. Which saved me when an update failed (not due to a blackout tho')

Dad had UPS for a gateway (and only) router and a camera system.
One day mom managed to get some water into power outlet and entire house shut down.
I only had a gaming laptop at the time and a monitor. I was quite confused when the monitor turned off when playing CS:GO with friends, but I could still talk to the friends despite not seeing anything (the laptop had working battery at the time and internet was on UPS). Unfortunately laptop didn't manage to switch to it's own monitor mid game for some reason.
fun fact: i updated my bios and ive never had a ups.
just a little praying (not really) that everything was gonna be fine.

I lived with a guy who had a few of these and they would beep so often it was annoying as heck.
It also feels risky updating a BIOS on a pc that randomly shuts down any day of the week.
Only keeps like 1-2 hours of battery. You gonna game for a short time lol

Quick tip about the UPS... CHANGE THE BATTERY AT LEAST EVERY 5 YEARS OR BUY A NEW ONE!!! Those batteries will eventually go out and turn into a glorified power strip.
This brick is easly reperable.
1. If you have button to flash Bios.
2. If you have dual-bios with switch.
3. If you chose a cheep motherboard without both you are gonna need another PC with Programator that cost ~5$ wirh clips. Most motherboards are gonna be fine without desoldering bios chip and you can find several good tutorials on UA-cam.

I have almost 2k in battery backups and the one running my gaming setup will run for about 8 hours
Fríendly PSA: UPS are not meant to be used to keep your computer working for long periods of time after a blackout; they provide both surge protection and a 10-15 minute window for you to save your work and properly shut off your computer.

I found an ups at goodwill for 20 dollars.
It makes a little bit of a whining noise that’s why I think it was in goodwill but it still works.

also don’t get a cheap battery but if you accidentally do and no longer can return it, it would work great for your wifi
