I drove down that road some years ago, I was surprised there was public access. Just don't trespass on the property. Those old loco's up close was very impressive.
Probably put some waterproof sheeting on the old roof, then needed to weigh it down for high winds. Now who decided to use tires (I see sandbags too) and how they got them up there would've been interesting to see.
@@hipcat13 That was quite a surprise as well! I saw some footage recently of a similar companies yard that has a few E units still in their BN paint, these are some of the units that used to work in the Chicago area up until the early 90's. The drone footage was from a couple of months ago, so they are still around also!
I used to go there and press forklift tires on their trucks. It was great to spend the day there but it gets crowded in there so one needs to pay more attention to what he is doing than spying. 😁 I'm seeing a lot more this way. Thank you for the veiw!!!!
I went here last Sunday and most of these units in this video are still sitting there! Like the old southern Pacific's,union Pacific, CSX and the Burlington northern, Santa fe and a few bnsfs and found some ltex's and old Canadian nationals and Illinois centrals and more! I even caught Iowa pacific 516 there doing some yard switching before he departed out of the yard!
I find it really neat to see all the -B units. I don't think I've ever seen that many of those in one place, and I'm not even sure I've seen anything other than streamliner -B units outside of a model railroading catalog. I wonder if anyone still uses -B units, anymore, or if it's more cost-effective to have a cab on everything?
From my understanding a lot of later cabless units were former cab units that had been in wrecks and rebuilt without cabs. So while they are still in use, they aren't really actively produced.
Do these guys sell to the public? I have a few odds and ends I've been wanting to collect from locomotives, mainly a Leslie RS3L or the headlight housing from an SW1200. I'd like to make an offer on one of those C39's, too. Would they take monthly payments for the next few decades?
I didn`t see the remaining HR616s. Were they finally cut up? I also saw the Crocodile GE from the Commercial, that was a surprise! There are quite a few locomotives that I thought were cut up a long time ago, good to see them, even if they are rusting hulks. Nice coverage, well done!
They probably got cut up. No surprise there, they ran like garbage and were a maintenance nightmare! Even though they were so unreliable, it's too bad one wasn't preserved for static display.
Is thisxyard near chicago because I think I been next to it years ago in my semi truck at a mini steel mill across, the street.and I took some photos of it.
I was wondering the same thing, NRE had the only three left in existence, it would be a shame if they were all scrapped. They should have donated one to Delson, even if it was just a shell for static display.
These locomotives and thousands upon thousands of others help build, feed, heat and move us from place to place for well over a hundred years. This is a sad ending for what I consider to be a very vital part of what made this country what it is today. A very sad ending indeed!
I've seen farmers do this to the tarps covering their silage piles. They're there to keep whatever is covering the roof from flying off during high winds.
if i lived near here. i would walk by each of thses locomotives.resting on the way.i love locomotives. most railfans do.along with dpus & excursion train cabooses
I live in Illinois. I haven't seen this graveyard before, I know they're graveyards of old retired locomotives in the U.S. but never been to one before
I'm wanting to take my drone and get some shots there. Out of curiosity, where did you park to take off, and did anyone give you trouble? Thanks! Very nice video.
peterandben I’ve done it a few times and never have seen anyone. There’s a few dead ends off the road there on the right from the very beginning of the video (off screen though) and just go from there so I’m not on the property.
Trainfan504 no because it’s more then 5 miles outside of the airport. Closer to 10. I was also only flying at about 75 feet. Pretty sure nothing would buzz that low to the ground without major violations.
Looking at DJI’s no fly map, it said there was a 110ft restriction in the area. I’m not planning on going higher, and I’m sure you didn’t, so no harm done. I’m hoping to get some close up shots of a few favorites in the line there!
Think the Illinois Railroad Museum could come here and save like a Burlington Northern unit the soo line switcher unit as Southern Pacific unit and a Santa Fe unit and a Rio Grande unit and also save that f40ph input in Amtrak scheme
just ask for permission like me abd my friend did to look around. we got to climb up some of the engines! me and my friend wish someone would save that ICG engine
I wish if the the railroad would keep the locomotive and operate them again i hope if they would rebuild them again i would like to see that I just saw some UP “ex SP SD45 and a NS Genset Switcher and UP SD60 and a UP SD40-2 if they would rebuild a SD40N that would be great to rebuild all of these locomotives

If God had a model Rail Road this would be it, complete with all the spare parts to kit bash what ever he wants!
Definitely true
And having a variety of locos in the collection that would never see each other in actual service.

I deliver fuel to the IHBRR yard in Hammond, IN. Saw 2 of their engines down here. Must have been bought at auction in Chicago.
Do you know if they’ve cleared it out completely yet? If not then i might go over there in a week or 2 before everything is gone.

Sad to see all the Southern Pacific locomotives with the "bloody nose" and gray color scheme. I miss that railroad!
