Awesome video Jeff ! It is interesting to see all these old veteran's of the rails as they sit silent. So many locomotives with many different roadnames. I could spend an entire day visiting this place. I ought to march right in there with my camera and take thousands of pictures. Although it's sad to see these units sitting here being unwanted with the vegetation starting to take over it also has a different effect , a certain charm all it's own. Excellent video Jeff Thanks ! 😁👍
That’s a lot of old power there! An old yellowbonnet, and some SPs.(one was a tunnel motor) I don’t want to see many of those unit get cut up, they deserve another shot at service if they can be rebuilt/refurbished. Happy Birthday by the way!
Not sure what the fate of those units are, there were a lot more units, but they have been either moved been cut up or sold. My son and I both have videos of NRE at different times, I shot one about a year ago. My son did several under QC Drone. Thanks for the Birthday wish and thanks for watching!
Wow Jeff great video it may be the last time I see the old CNW green and yellow 😥 Looked like an old SD50 …….7009? everything changes…. I was working in Council Bluffs when they were new to the fleet…half a lifetime ago now 😮
sad to see this. i remember this as a hustling n bustling yard when i was a kid in the eary 80s...whoever got that much grass to grow in the old yard needs to do consulting for lawn care companies in the southeast and southwest
Yes, it is sad to see. About this time last year there were more than double the units now. NRE is still there in a smaller capacity, Friends of 261 own the rest and are eventually bringing the UP Challenger there to be restored. Possible museum down the road.
No, they are still using a small part of the building. The Friends of 261 who are getting UP 3985 Challenger and a DD40X are getting the majority of the building to work on steam engines sometime down the road. Thanks for watching Bob!
@Jeff Toft Good to know. But one small correction; Centennial 6936’ designation is “DDA40X”. I’m not sure why some people tend to call it “DD40X”, but I guess it’s because of the refurbishment features it received a while ago from UP. But I still consider it incorrect. Apparently during the centennial’s production, EMD originally called it the “DD40AX” but it was later changed during development.

Of the Railroad Graveyards I’ve seen here on UA-cam, this is the Most Depressing since it’s here in the Midwest. 🤔🙏 Thanks Jeff. 👍

A lot of those units (most?) are SD45s with 20-cylinder engines; not much call for those beasts.

Yes, they will get back where it belongs. Looks and running wise I hope.
Are those over grown tracks all original from rock island?
I’d say from the looks of things and never seeing any work done there, it would be original track from then. Thanks for watching Cayden.
Hello I might go past here soon how did you get your drone in there do you need permission or did you just do it?
Just flew over it, about four times in the last 5 years. Not much in there now.
