Growing up in Antelope, some of us teens trying to get to Roseville area by Cirby Way late at night would cut through this railroad yard on foot as a shortcut from PFE. It was always a mistake because you don't realize how big this rail yard is until you are out there trying to get through, and how tedious it is to scramble all the way between endless boxcars. Not to mention watching out for moving trains, security and others who might be around. Fun times though. The video is a great perspective, nicely done.
Just came across your video. What a great video! I actually worked for UPRR and was part of the crew that rebuilt that yard back in the late '90's. I operated one the track tampers and tamped almost every inch of that yard. After the yard was finished I was the foreman of the maintenance track gang for the yard. Spent many of nights repairing track switches that train crews ran through. Great memories. Awesome video!
Were u there when they found the bombs that were still buried in the ground from when all the bombs exploded back in 1973 that were headed to Vietnam? I remember when I was a kid and we lived in west roseville they found bombs that had been buried in the ground and they had to detonate them. It was big news in little Roseville back then haha My family lived so close in 73 when the bombs went off my papa was blown through the garage.
Thanks for creating this video. What many watching don’t realize is that the vast majority of this yard is not visible to the average citizen as their are very few locations to get any view from. Thanks for showing a perspective few get to see.
I remember when a military set of boxcars blue up near Antelope, about 1972 or 3. Long before all the houses were built around there. Antelope was just a country store and post office. The boxcars blew over a few hours. I was 50 miles away and it was loud. Sounded like rolling thunder, B-52s in Vietnam. Yard looked like a WWII target afterwards.
Yeah I remember that too. It was an ammunition train full of bombs, rockets etc. ect. all kinds of military ordnance going to Port Chicago for loading out to Nam. the train caught fire for some reason and the whole thing went up!
My family lived off roseville rd and when the bombs went off it blew my papa from the driveway through the garage and blew all the windows out of the house.
@Marrowbones I wish I could but I was born in 1987 so I did not experience it myself. My mom and her family lived in the neighborhood as well as her aunt and cousins lived across the street. Over near butternut and lichen off roseville rd. Nobody was seriously hurt from what I was told just that my papa was blown through the garage door because he was outside at the time of the blasts, they were evacuated from the area but I don't know much more. The house received minor damage but was repairable. I can remember them finding bombs in the 90s when the re-built the yards but that's about it. My grandparents are in their 80s now and still live in the neighborhood (different house around the block haha).
Loved the video since I lived about a mile and a half from the east end of the yard for 36 years. Watched it go from Southern Pacific ownership to Union Pacific and the complete rebuilding of the yard and hump under new ownership, as SP had really let things deteriorate over time. There is a lot of history in the yard toward the east end where the locomotive maintenance and repair facilities are located. There is still a turntable that is used occasionally where there used to be two. I lived about five miles away when the train carrying bombs had a boxcar fire causing a number of explosions in 1973 at the western (Antelope) end of the yard. We could feel the explosions even at that distance and see the smoke.
Awesome photography! I live about 20 minutes away from this rail yard. Every time I drive over that bridge I try to look at everything as much as I can! Didn't realize it would be a video anything like this! Can't thank you enough for your incredible photography, and certainly glad that you did not get in any trouble!
@@CaliforniaPhantom Well hit me up if you ever decide to do that!!! I have no idea how come I love that rail yard so much, but it's so awesome. I even have a Train Simulator game where you can drive a train clear from this very railyard all the way to Reno!!! Amazing that you just wrote back to me because I just happen to be hanging out in the area of the rail yard while visiting a friend that lives only like 2 miles away or so! So I've already driven over that bridge 2 times today so far! Thank you so very much for your kind response!!

At first it may look like a weird lay. Two years ago China closed it industry for about 2 months and today we're not have recovered from the supply chain issues. Imagine the severe issues if a marshaling yard would be attacked. After 911 DHS/NSA has identified what is considered vital infrastructure. That vital infrastructure now falls under the protection of DHS. In this case flying the drone over the yard is innocent (that is why he was given a warning and told to leave), but a bad-actor could use a drone a find wagons with dangerous cargo as part of an inventory later to be used in an attack. Weaponized drones are now used in the Ukraine. Nobody cares about drones flying over a rail yards until something happens and the whole country is asking why DHS didn't do anything to prevent that because even a blind person could see that is was dangerous (hindsight is 20/20)...
Great video. And I’m really glad that you were very respectful when the DHS folks asked to to stop shooting. Unlike many other UA-cam’ers out there. DHS protects our country from the crazies out there and it’s our duty to let them perform their job. Great video once again and thank you for sharing.
I work in the Roseville yard. It is really interesting seeing it from a birds eye perspective. It’s funny people talk about the drones flying over. Your most likely not the only person who has done this. Great video.
I live only about 5 minutes away. I have flown my spark around there a few times but there wasn't really any indication that it wasn't allowed. You would think that if DHS really didn't want people flying there they would just ask the FAA to classify the airspace as a no fly zone under 400ft. That seems like its well within their abilities. That would make it show up on the maps that drone pilots use to determine if there are any airspace restrictions. Dams, power stations and military installations already have this. In any case it is really cool watching the rail yard work from the air.
My friend's Dad worked there then. Drove around the yard putting trains together. We walked through there after visiting the nearby swap meet. Found his dad and rode in the Engine for a while. Foolish, but we were teenagers, and the memory is one I love.
fantastic video, in fact it is the ONLY video that actually pertained to my search of "drone flying over freight train yard" but as you explained, it is illegal so i understand why thered be a lack of videos. but thank you for uploading this, i found it fascinating!
Excellent!!! Excellent video. I've lived a block and a half from the engine house since 1992. Best view I've ever seen of the yard! Great editing too! Keep it up!
For the record, people who are saying that the DHS is BS, the reason it's illegal to film railyards without permission is because after 9/11, the government realized that terrorists can target anything they want and it can easily go under the radar. Railyards are extremely vital parts of the US' infrastructure, which would be a tempting target for terrorism. That's the same reason there aren't any freight trackers anymore for railfans. If they can't film (or track trains), they can't gather intelligence for a potential strike. Also, the difference between Google Maps and a drone video is a video is a record of the trains in real-time operation, while Maps and Earth are just stillshots, there's no operation shown. It's all about the security of the country. Also, cool video. I lived in Roseville as a kid, and never even knew there was a rail yard there :P
We reside 5 miles from here and both my wife and I work in Roseville :-) This is most excellent :-) Right into my LOCOMOTIVES playlist :-) ROCK ON!!!!!!!
Who remembers when they dug up the bombs left over from that Vietnam Era accident? Anyone? The original blast blew out the windows at my mother's house in Citrus Heights, Greenback and Dewey area.
Its located here in Portland, Oregon at the Oregon Rail Hertiage Center www.orhf.org. They run it out about once a year for local excursions and once in a great while for cross country trips. You will never see it run on Union Pacific tracks, though like it did back before they bought the SP. It only runs on BNSF trackage now. UP is weird.
It's not so much the military equipment that is the concern, it's the really nasty stuff in some of the tank cars coming thru that DHS monitors movement and doesn't want the general public to know about. Cool vid btw!
Where the guy was standing bats fly out of an alcove just about 500 feet behind him everday around dusk. They migrate west foraging for insects. Quite a site to see..tje railroad yard is so big it borders two counties (Sacramento and Placer)

The footage was pretty dang awesome. Whatever camera is on that drone, is pretty dang great too. One question for anyone though. @1:25, what is that method called when a rail yard separates their cars like that? I tried “Building a train in rail yard.” , “Gravity separates train cars.” And etc but nothing comes up. Lol
@@CaliforniaPhantom Yes, I believe it's called 'humping the cars', since most yards will use gravity and a gradual slope, with the hump at the top, to funnel cars down. (Or at least that's how I read it in another article on railway yards.)
Very nice! I would be interested to hear more about your conversation with DHS about flying over the rail yard! The FAA controls the airspace not DHS. It is not illegal to fly a Cessna 172 over the rail yard so why would a UAV be any different 🤔
First, you made an excellent video with good planning and it really works well. If you went to UP and DHS and asked nicely, do you think they might say 'yes' - you might have to tolerate a chaperone and them having a veto option but if I was UP I'd certainly be interested in the output. If I was DHS I might want to let you capture the perimeter if I then had the only copy - but as long as they're on your side after that, could be an interesting relationship? Or is that too much Hollywood? (Sorry, I'm in the UK) I had to smile at the guy/gal in a fork-truck driving alongside a 10-mile long freight yard - hope he/she had plenty of gas... I appreciate the sensitivity about railyards but then I see the impressive drone footage of awesome bridges and scenic routes where there (in my view) is even more risk as severing the rail link would cause massive issues. Keep trying!
And did these Homeland Sewcurity Agents identify either the section(s) of the US Code or Code of Federal Regulations that declare drone filming of rail yards to be illegal?
Paul Robinson no they didn’t. They just explained to me that they have sensitive hardware that moves through the yard; that’s why they are there to begin with. That I should take off, and do not to right fight with them - I just took off. First time I have ever been stopped by anyone above a police officer.
I lived there for many years. Shame you couldn't get the East end where the terminal is and the engine shop. It's a lot different since the UP completely rebuilt it after they bought the SP. I think The Rockpile yard is the only thing left.
We don't always get to see the 'top side' of the trains. A lot of interesring detail to be seen and no grafitti up there either. Thanks for shraring this.
I dont think its that much bigger than west colton near san bernadino. both yards fulfill the same basic function. Take in blocks of cars from faraway cities in the US (or Mexico, canada) and break them into local hauler trains for the region. And vice versa. Roseville (Jenks yard) serves most of Northern Cal and WestColton serves the southern cal region.
Roseville Yard is the Current biggest yard in the west coast the west colton yard isnt even half the size of this yard in capacity and actually the roseville yard takes care of the whole west coast and mid west states all the way to the bottom of Texas. All the west colton yard takes care of is the local freight in the central valley of California with a few trains that go north or to the bay area.
when I read about halfway thru your first sentence I thought maybe this guy knows what hes talking about. By the end of the post I could only wonder why someone would take the time to post such complete rubbish.
They aren't. There are smaller engines that move the cars around sorting them, he just didn't get them on camera. Some are also on departing/arriving trains which again he doesn't catch the engines.
just saw another drone RR video. That guy claimed that the FAA controls the air. The RR only controls the ground. Unless the airspace is restricted by the government; you can fly anywhere! Was he correct?
Well yes and no. DHS is present at the location I was at due to particular government pieces moving through this particular rail yard. Just because there isn’t a flight restriction, does not mean I cannot be forcibly removed / restricted from flying there. It comes with the might of government vs local. Cops generally speaking won’t give you a hard time if your legal. That being said early on in my channel I had a police department illegally confiscate my drone and actually sued them and won. So what I’m saying is fly it if it’s legal, but if your stopped by DHS or FBI then comply and leave and you should be good. DHS was understanding to me, but still told me to get lost.
At 1:07, two tracks at far right are Mains; L goes north to Redding, R goes south from Redding and Chicago, both through tracks for quick crew changes only. At 1:26, that is the local 'Car Shop'. At 1:31 you are looking at the 'Hump' to the upper right of the building. At 1:44 , that oil train is an empty. It is on the last East Main and will be going to Reno over the summit. (for Ref. Cirby/Foothills/Roseville rd intersection at middle of oil train) I have a video of Wesstbound Oil Train at "Wayne Everett/UA-cam" with the correct music on it that I took in Antelope, CA. Google Maps. At 3:40, the train on the left will be going UP the valley to Redding, Portland, Seattle. Pretty cool footage !! I live two blocks from the east end and we NEVER get this view ! Thanks !! P.S. Most of this vedeo is taken above the yard where the Munitions Train blew up in the early 70s leveling the town of Antelope, CA. Wikipedia that.
Wayne Everett I recently did just that. Thank you for all this information. My uncle worked for SP before he was laid off. I do not remember when that was, but a lot of men lost their jobs.
I lived a little over 5 miles from the switch yard. At night you can hear the cars getting switched. This awesome footage. It is too bad about the drone prohibition, but I understand why it in place. If we were to go war, God forbid, The enmities would have access to a nice map and could plan where exactly to attack. Losing this switchyard would crumble the United States economy, and cause shortages of everything.
DHS doesn't control the yard, UP has their own police for that. There was most likely a hazmat train in the yard which DHS monitors while on the move. If one car ruptured from the act of a terrorist it could take out a good part of the city so no, I see nothing wrong with that.
Wow! You just don't get a good feel for the size of that yard when you drive by it. Cool to see from above. What exactly happened with HMS. Did they catch you, or did UP?
They basically notified me that where I was standing was private property and that I couldn't fly. Technically speaking if I flew it from across the street it would be legal, but I had no idea thar DHS had anything to do with the rail yard. Having said that, I probably won't try that again... If I feel the bug to record anothet train I'll catch one crossing a bridge or something where it won't be an issue. Thanks for the comment
You were lied to by poorly informed and educated police on the matter. Check UA-cam for 1st amendment audits being done all over America. It is sad to realise that the police are not accountable for their lies or mistakes.
To fran koch.... The police had nothing to do with it. You look like an idiot and i'll give you some time to figure it out before i explain it to you. geez Oh. Awesome video by the way! Thanks for sharing, California Phantom.
I totally agree. I don’t believe rail yards are “illegal” to fly. I think Roseville CA is in particular due to the fact that they continue to send military components through it and DHS being present on site. I am sure there are other sensitive rail yards; I just sort of put that PDA out there so people fully understood that there is a potential risk flying one.

cool footage. glad I came across this video. not so crazy about the music though. glad to know that we are not suppose to do this, before I tryed it.
(Sorry, I'm in the UK)
I had to smile at the guy/gal in a fork-truck driving alongside a 10-mile long freight yard - hope he/she had plenty of gas...
I appreciate the sensitivity about railyards but then I see the impressive drone footage of awesome bridges and scenic routes where there (in my view) is even more risk as severing the rail link would cause massive issues.
Keep trying!
great footage
I live in Antelope. cool video. Did you know a huge explosion occurred on these train tracks in 1973.
Do you remember when they dug up the bombs in the late 90s?
Definitely...
Great video. I go to the NRE here locally where there they have rows of hundred of engines that get scraped and rebuilt on my page.
Just awesome!
Well done, Interesting video from another angle. Decent background music.
First time I have ever been stopped by anyone above a police officer.
best way to ship anything😎Remember folks " trucks stop for trains"👍
awesome
Thank you!
I lived there for many years. Shame you couldn't get the East end where the terminal is and the engine shop. It's a lot different since the UP completely rebuilt it after they bought the SP. I think The Rockpile yard is the only thing left.
pretty busy railyard that's good to see wondering if you have much interference with all that metal around?
Surprisingly no... I had a decent vantage point which I think helped.
We don't always get to see the 'top side' of the trains. A lot of interesring detail to be seen and no grafitti up there either. Thanks for shraring this.
excellent footage, i think i would not have set up so close to the main road, i would have been abit more secluded.
awesome video....I go by there all the time but never get to see overhead view. thanks
Nice job Bro!
it would be great if someone made roseville rail yard in ho scale.what do you think?.
christian zepeda it would be nice if it was done with some kind of scale; hard to really appreciate how truly big it really is.
christian zepeda ,great movie love it l have this yard in train dispatcher simulation
Gives me a good perspective on the yard in real life
Leon.
I remember this, was living in Sacramento at the time.
It’s an amazing sight to behold
I wish sp still was operating. Theyre much cooler
they would be if they were not missmanaged
why were the tank cars moving by them selves at 1:36 ?
that is the yards hump hill so they were being sorted on a down hill grade.
good video
Neat video
I have 2 questions..
1} Is it me or the boxcars and tank cars moving on their own?
2} Why are they moving on their own?
They aren't. There are smaller engines that move the cars around sorting them, he just didn't get them on camera.
Some are also on departing/arriving trains which again he doesn't catch the engines.
GarrusN7 Ah okay, thx. :D
GarrusN7 i think he means the hump
Trainfan 3219 Just searched hump yard, seems like you're right about that :o
no problem
I used to paint that yard back in the day.
just saw another drone RR video.
Is this a top 5 railyard in the United States, as far as size is considered?
I would say easily top 5. Might actually be top 3. Not sure, but safe to say top 5.
@@CaliforniaPhantom Seems about as large as Argentine and Queensgate, and those two are HUGE!
I like how it's private property but the DHS controls it. See anything wrong with this?
You look like an idiot and i'll give you some time to figure it out before i explain it to you. geez
Oh. Awesome video by the way! Thanks for sharing, California Phantom.
Unless it is a restricted airspace zone you can fly. period .
fran koch You poor guy.
Damn amazing image👌👍🤙
Nice camera work and nice background music.
Hang Massive is the music.
This is a really cool video.
QC Drone appreciate the nice comment.
Ok I’ve got to ask, Why is It illegal to fly a drone over a rail yard?!!
What damage can a plastic drone do to the onslaught of a 220 ton locomotive?
I totally agree. I don’t believe rail yards are “illegal” to fly. I think Roseville CA is in particular due to the fact that they continue to send military components through it and DHS being present on site. I am sure there are other sensitive rail yards; I just sort of put that PDA out there so people fully understood that there is a potential risk flying one.
Nice video and it sucks that you were approached like that.
Cool music . Flying a drone over a rail yard is super illegal , don't get caught .
Awesome video. Too bad there isn't more coverage of the hump action.
Классная съемка
very nice footage , cool video , Peace
how many miles is it
how many tracks
I was told, back it was S.P. that it was 7 miles long. It's in 2 counties.
Nice Job! I too have been chased from rail yards but never by DHS, usually by rent-a-cops (security guards). I just say sorry, pack up and leave. I have a few of those videos on my channel.
nice vid
